Passive spiral galaxies, despite their spiral morphological appearance, do not have any emission lines indicative of ongoing star formation in their optical spectra. Previous studies have suggested that passive spiral galaxies preferentially exist in infall regions of galaxy clusters, suggesting that the cluster environment is likely to be responsible for creating these galaxies. By carrying out spatially resolved long-slit spectroscopy on four nearby passive spiral galaxies with the Apache Point Observatory 3.5-m telescope, we investigated the stellar populations of passive spiral galaxies separately for their inner and outer regions. In the two unambiguously passive spiral galaxies among the four observed galaxies, H$δ$ absorption lines are more prominent in the outer regions of the galaxies, whereas the 4000-Å breaks (D$_{4000}$) are strongest in the inner regions of the galaxies. A comparison with a simple stellar population model for the two passive spiral galaxies indicates that the outer regions of the galaxies tend to harbour younger populations of stars. The strong H$δ$ absorption observed in the outer regions of the sample galaxies is consistent with that of galaxies whose star formation ceased a few Gyrs ago. Because of the large uncertainty in the absorption indices in our samples, further observations are needed in order to place constraints on the mechanisms that quench star formation in passive spiral galaxies.
Passive spiral galaxies - unusual galaxies with spiral morphologies but without any sign of on-going star formation - have recently been shown to exist preferentially in cluster infalling regions. This discovery directly connects passive spiral galaxies to cluster galaxy evolution studies, such as the Butcher-Oemler effect or the morphology-density relation. Thus, detailed study of passive spiral galaxies could potentially yield new insight on the underlying physical mechanisms governing cluster galaxy evolution. However, in previous work, passive spiral galaxies were selected from low-resolut…
Passive spiral galaxies -- unusual galaxies with spiral morphology without any sign of on-going star formation -- have recently been discovered to exist preferentially in cluster infalling regions (at about the virial radius, or at a local galaxy density of $\sim 1$ Mpc$^{-2}$). The discovery directly connects the passive spiral galaxies to the cluster galaxy evolution studies such as the Butcher-Oemler effect or the morphology-density relation, i.e., passive spiral galaxies are likely to be transition objects between high-z blue, spiral galaxies and low-z red, cluster early-type galaxies. Thu…
We present new results from deep GALEX UV imaging of the cluster Cl 0024+17 at z~0.4. Rest-frame far UV emission is detected from a large fraction of so-called ``passive spiral galaxies'' -a significant population which exhibits spiral morphology with little or no spectroscopic evidence for ongoing star formation. This population is thought to represent infalling galaxies whose star formation has been somehow truncated by environmental processes, possibly in morphological transition to S0 galaxies. Compared to normal cluster spirals, we find that passive spirals are redder in FUV-optical color…
In previous work on galaxy clusters, several authors reported a discovery of an unusual population of galaxies, which have spiral morphologies, but do not show any star formation activity. These galaxies are called ``passive spirals'', and have been interesting since it has been difficult to understand the existence of such galaxies. Using a volume limited sample (0.05<z<0.1 and Mr<-20.5; 25813 galaxies) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, we have found 73 (0.28$\pm$0.03%) passive spiral galaxies and studied their environments. It is found that passive spiral galaxies live in local galaxy de…
Recent spectroscopic and high resolution $HST$-imaging observations have revealed significant numbers of ``passive'' spiral galaxies in distant clusters, with all the morphological hallmarks of a spiral galaxy (in particular, spiral arm structure), but with weak or absent star formation. Exactly how such spiral galaxies formed and whether they are the progenitors of present-day S0 galaxies is unclear. Based on analytic arguments and numerical simulations of the hydrodynamical evolution of a spiral galaxy's halo gas (which is a likely candidate for the source of gas replenishment for star forma…
(Abridged) We present an analysis of the stellar populations of the gas-stripped outer disks of ten Virgo Cluster spiral galaxies, utilizing SparsePak integral field spectroscopy on the WIYN 3.5m telescope and GALEX UV photometry. The galaxies in our sample show evidence for being gas-stripped spiral galaxies, with star formation within a truncation radius, and a passive population beyond the truncation radius. We find that all of the galaxies with spatially truncated star formation have outer disk stellar populations consistent with star formation ending within the last 500 Myr. The synthesis…
It is a remarkable feature that various properties of galaxies vary according to their environments. However, only little has been known on the origin of this variety in galaxies. Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, we investigate the morphology-density relation to find two characteristic environment where the morphology-density relation abruptly changes (0.3 and 2 Rvir). The result has significant implication for the underlying physical mechanism since it suggests that two different mechanisms might be responsible for the morphology-density relation. In addition, we study the envir…
We have constructed a large, uniform galaxy cluster catalog from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. By studying the morphology--cluster-centric-radius relation, we have found two characteristic environments where galaxy morphologies change dramatically, indicating there exist two different physical mechanisms responsible for the cluster galaxy evolution. We also found an unusual population of galaxies, which have spiral morphology but do not have any emission lines, indicating these spiral galaxies do not have any on-going star formation activity. More interestingly, these passive spiral galax…
We combine the photometric redshift data of Fernandez-Soto et al. (1997) with the morphological data of Odewahn et al. (1996) for all galaxies with I < 26.0 detected in the Hubble Deep Field. From this combined catalog we generate the morphological galaxy number-counts and corresponding redshift distributions and compare these to the predictions of high normalization zero- and passive- evolution models. From this comparison we conclude the following: (1) E/S0s are seen in numbers and over a redshift range consistent with zero- or minimal passive- evolution to I = 24. Beyond this limit fewer E/…
We investigate the properties of optically passive spirals and dusty red galaxies in the A901/2 cluster complex at redshift ~0.17 using restframe near-UV-optical SEDs, 24 micron IR data and HST morphologies from the STAGES dataset. The cluster sample is based on COMBO-17 redshifts with an rms precision of sigma_cz~2000 km/sec. We find that 'dusty red galaxies' and 'optically passive spirals' in A901/2 are largely the same phenomenon, and that they form stars at a substantial rate, which is only 4x lower than that in blue spirals at fixed mass. This star formation is more obscured than in blue …
The Sc galaxy M33 has been mapped with ISOPHOT in the far-infrared, at 60, 100, and 170mue. The spatial resolution of these FIR maps allows the separation of spiral arms and interarm regions and the isolation of a large number of star-forming regions. The spectral energy distribution in the FIR indicates a superposition of two components, a warm one originating from dust at ~45K, and a cold one, at ~16K. The warm component is concentrated towards the spiral arms and the star-forming regions, and is likely heated by the UV radiation from OB stars. The cold component is more smoothly distributed…
We test the hypothesis that S0 galaxies are the descendants of fading spirals whose star formation has been shut down, by using the properties of their globular cluster (GC) systems. We estimate the amount by which the GC specific frequency (number of GCs per unit V-band luminosity) is enhanced in S0s relative to spirals. If the transformation hypothesis is correct, and no GCs are created or destroyed in the process, then this difference provides a measure of the degree to which the S0's V-band luminosity has faded relative to that of its spiral progenitor. We also explore whether the degree t…
We present near-infrared (H- and K-band) SINFONI integral-field observations of the circumnuclear star formation rings in five nearby spiral galaxies. We made use of the relative intensities of different emission lines (i.e. [FeII], HeI, Brg) to age date the stellar clusters present along the rings. This qualitative, yet robust, method allows us to discriminate between two distinct scenarios that describe how star formation progresses along the rings. Our findings favour a model where star formation is triggered predominantly at the intersection between the bar major axis and the inner Lindbla…
We have performed a deep spectroscopic survey of extremely red galaxies on the GOODS-South field, using GMOS on Gemini South. We present here spectra and redshifts for 16 ERGs at 0.87<z<2.02, to a limit K=20.2. The ERHs are a mixture of spheroidals, mergers and spirals, with one AGN. For at least 10 of these galaxies we observe [OII] emission lines. We perform an age-dating analysis by fitting the spectra and 9-band photometry of the ERGs with models of passively evolving stellar populations combined with a younger star-forming component. The best-fitting ages for the old stellar components ra…
Utilizing spatially resolved VLT/FORS spectroscopy and HST/ACS imaging, we constructed a sample of over 200 field spiral galaxies at redshifts 0.1<z<1.0. We find that the ratio between stellar and total mass remains roughly constant over the observed epochs, in compliance with the framework of hierarchical structure growth. However, the stellar mass-to-light ratios evolve more strongly in low-mass spirals than in high--mass spirals, indicating an anti-hierarchical evolution of their stellar populations (aka "down-sizing").
(Abriged) This is a short review on the evolution of elliptical and lenticular/S0 galaxies in the dense environment of rich clusters for look-back times of more than half the age of the Universe. In addition, new data are presented for the cluster Abell 2218. Scaling relations like the Fundamental Plane provide strong evidence that luminous ellipticals evolve purely passively up to redshifts of z=0.8 implying that no significant new stellar population was created during that time. This picture is supported by tight Mg-sigma and colour-magnitude relations at various redshifts and age/metallicit…
A Tully-Fisher (TF) relation from H-alpha rotation curves of 19 luminous, star-forming galaxies reveals there is little evidence for evolution in the mass-to-light ratio (M/L) of these galaxies to z~0.3. The near-infrared Tolman surface-brightness test for other luminous galaxies indicates their luminosity also is little changed to z~0.3. In this redshift regime, internal velocity -- luminosity relations like Tully-Fisher may provide a way to measure q0. Discrepant results from several intermediate redshift Tully-Fisher surveys, however, must be understood first. One possibility is that differ…
The Halpha gas kinematics of twenty-one representative barred spiral galaxies belonging to the BHaBAR sample is presented. The galaxies were observed with FaNTOmM, a Fabry-Perot integral-field spectrometer, on three different telescopes. The 3D data cubes were processed through a robust pipeline with the aim of providing the most homogeneous and accurate dataset possible useful for further analysis. The data cubes were spatially binned to a constant signal-to-noise ratio, typically around 7. Maps of the monochromatic Halpha emission line and of the velocity field were generated and the kinemat…
We present a study of the host galaxy of the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) of May 5 2006 (GRB 060505). The host is spatially resolved in both imaging data and in a long slit spectrum including the GRB site. We find the galaxy to be a Sbc spiral, which is unusual for a long GRB host galaxy. The site of the GRB is considerably different from the rest of the galaxy with intense star formation, low metallicity and a young age. This suggest a massive stellar progenitor rather than a merger of compact objects which has been suggested based on the the relatively short duration of T_90=4s for the prompt emiss…
We describe the various Halpha morphologies of Virgo Cluster and isolated spiral galaxies, and associate the Halpha morphologies with the types of environmental interactions which have altered the cluster galaxies. The spatial distributions of Halpha and R-band emission are used to divide the star formation morphologies of the 52 Virgo Cluster spirals into several categories: normal (37%), anemic (6%), enhanced (6%), and (spatially) truncated (52%). Truncated galaxies are further subdivided based on their inner star formation rates into truncated/normal (37%), truncated/compact (6%), truncated…
NGC 253 is a nearby spiral galaxy that is currently undergoing a nuclear burst of star formation in a 100 pc diameter region. We present spatially resolved 8--13 micron low-resolution spectra at four positions along the ridge of 8--13 micron emission. We find that the relative strengths of the ionic, dust emission features, and dust continuum emission vary with position in the galaxy but can be accounted for everywhere without recourse to extinction by silicates. The brightest mid-infrared peak (which is displaced from the nucleus) has elevated levels of both continuum and 11.1--12.9 micron `p…
We present results from ACS and WFPC observations in the low luminosity galaxy NGC 45. We identified 28 young star cluster candidates. While the exact values of age, mass, and extinction depend somewhat on the choice of SSP models, we find no young clusters with masses higher than a few 1000 Msun for any model choice. We derive the luminosity function of young star clusters and find a slope of alpha=-1.94+-0.28. We also identified 19 old globular clusters and we estimate a specific frequency of globular clusters of S_N=1.4-1.9 which is significantly higher than observed for other late-type gal…
In the last few years, galaxies at redshifts up to z~1 have become accessible for medium-resolved spectroscopy thanks to the new generation of 10m-class telescopes. With kinematic and photometric information on spiral galaxies in this regime, well-known scaling relations like the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) can be studied over half a Hubble time. By comparison to local samples, these studies facilitate simultaneous tests of the hierarchical merging scenario and stellar population models. Using the Very Large Telescope, we obtained spatially resolved rotation curves of 78 spiral galaxies in the…
This paper presents data from the BIMA interferometer showing spatially resolved absorption spectra of the gravitationally lensed quasar PKS 1830-211. High-resolution (1.2 km/s) spectra were taken in two spectral windows centered on the redshifted frequencies of the HCO+(2-1) and HCN(2-1) molecular transitions. There is no molecular absorption in the northeast image but the southwest image reveals optically thick absorbing gas at these transition frequencies. Further analyses conclude that the spectra are consistent with completely saturated absorption in the southwest image and the line profi…
We present a comprehensive photometric dataset taken over the entire outburst of the eclipsing dwarf nova IP Peg in September/October 1997. Analysis of the lightcurves taken over the long rise to the peak-of-outburst shows conclusively that the outburst started near the centre of the disc and moved outwards. This is the first dataset that spatially resolves such an outburst. The dataset is consistent with the idea that long rise times are indicative of such `inside-out' outbursts. We show how the thickness and the radius of the disc, along with the mass transfer rate change over the whole outb…
