In this paper we present three different results dealing with the number of $(\leq k)$-facets of a set of points:
1. We give structural properties of sets in the plane that achieve the optimal lower bound $3\binom{k+2}{2}$ of $(\leq k)$-edges for a fixed $0\leq k\leq \lfloor n/3 \rfloor -1$;
2. We give a simple construction showing that the lower bound $3\binom{k+2}{2}+3\binom{k-\lfloor \frac{n}{3} \rfloor+2}{2}$ for the number of $(\leq k)$-edges of a planar point set appeared in [Aichholzer et al. New lower bounds for the number of ($\leq k$)-edges and the rectilinear crossing number of $K_n$. {\em Disc. Comput. Geom.} 38:1 (2007), 1--14] is optimal in the range $\lfloor n/3 \rfloor \leq k \leq \lfloor 5n/12 \rfloor -1$;
3. We show that for $k < \lfloor n/(d+1) \rfloor$ the number of $(\leq k)$-facets of a set of $n$ points in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is at least $(d+1)\binom{k+d}{d}$, and that this bound is tight in the given range of $k$.
We have found the minimal difference $Δ(k) = \min\limits_P (f_{d-1}(P) - f_{0}(P))$ between the number of facets and the number of vertices of a $k$-neighborly $d$-polytope $P$ for the case $f_{0}(P) = d+3$: $Δ(2) = 4$, $Δ(3) = 15$, and $Δ(k) = 2 (k^2 - 1)$ for $k \ge 4$.
We give a complete enumeration of all 2-neighborly $d$-polytopes with $d+9$ and less facets. All of them are realized as 0/1-polytopes, except a 6-polytope $P_{6,10,15}$ with 10 vertices and 15 facets, and pyramids over $P_{6,10,15}$. In particular, we update the lower bounds for the number of facets of a 2-neighborly $d$-polytope $P$ and showed that the number of facets of $P$ is not less than the number of its vertices $f_0(P)$ for $f_0(P) \le d + 10$.
We show that the edge graph of a 6-dimensional polytope with 12 facets has diameter at most 6, thus verifying the d-step conjecture of Klee and Walkup in the case of d=6. This implies that for all pairs (d,n) with n-d \leq 6 the diameter of the edge graph of a d-polytope with n facets is bounded by 6, which proves the Hirsch conjecture for all n-d \leq 6. We show this result by showing this bound for a more general structure -- so-called matroid polytopes -- by reduction to a small number of satisfiability problems.
In this note we prove that the number of combinatorial types of $d$-polytopes with $d+1+α$ vertices and $d+1+β$ facets is bounded by a constant independent of $d$.
In this paper we present a bijection $ω_n$ between two well known families of Catalan objects: the set of facets of the $m$-generalized cluster complex $Δ^m(A_n)$ and the set of dominant regions in the $m$-Catalan arrangement ${\rm Cat}^m(A_n)$, where $m\in\mathbb{N}_{>0}$. In particular, $ω_n$ bijects the facets containing the negative simple root $-α$ to dominant regions having the hyperplane $\{v\in V\mid<v,α>=m\}$ as separating wall. As a result, $ω_n$ restricts to a bijection between the set of facets of the positive part of $Δ^m(A_n)$ and the set of bounded dominant regions in ${\rm Cat}…
Let S be a set of n >= d points in general position in R^d. An oriented (d-1)-simplex spanned by d points from S is called a k-facet iff the positive side of its affine hull contains exactly k points from S. A (<=k)-facet is simply an i-facet for some i <= k. Let E_k(S) denote the number of (<=k)-facets. Of particular interest is the problem of bounding E_k(S) in terms of n, d, and k. We present and analyze a method of generating all oriented d-tuples of points from S (and therefore all k-facets for 0 <= k <= n-d) that is inductive with regard to the dimension d. The motivation behind this is …
We complete the classification of compact hyperbolic Coxeter $d$-polytopes with $d+4$ facets for $d=4$ and $5$. By previous work of Felikson and Tumarkin, the only remaining dimension where new polytopes may arise is $d=6$. We derive a new method for generating the combinatorial type of these polytopes via the classification of point set order types. In dimensions $4$ and $5$, there are $348$ and $51$ polytopes, respectively, yielding many new examples for further study. We furthermore provide new upper bounds on the dimension $d$ of compact hyperbolic Coxeter polytopes with $d+k$ facets for $…
We prove that Dirichlet stereohedra for non-cubic crystallographic groups in dimension 3 cannot have more than 80 facets. The bound depends on the particular crystallographic group considered and is above 50 only on 9 of the 97 affine conjugacy classes of them. We also construct Dirichlet stereohedra with 32 and 29 facets for a hexagonal and a tetragonal group, respectively.
We improve Larman's bound on the diameter of a polytope by showing that if $Δ$ is a normal simplicial complex, all of whose missing faces have size at most $r$, then the diameter of the facet-ridge graph of $Δ$ is not larger than $2^{r-2}n$, where $n$ is the number of vertices of $Δ$. We then use this result to provide new upper bounds on the diameters of the facet-ridge graphs of $k$-neighborly spheres, $r$-stacked spheres, and polytopes with small $g_r$. Specifically, our bounds imply that $r$-stacked spheres with $r=O(\log n)$ satisfy the polynomial Hirsch conjecture.
Let $P$ be a simple polytope with $n-d = 2$, where $d$ is the dimension and $n$ is the number of facets. The graph of such a polytope is also called a grid. It is known that the directed random walk along the edges of $P$ terminates after $O(\log^2 n)$ steps, if the edges are oriented in a (pseudo-)linear fashion. We prove that the same bound holds for the more general unique sink orientations.
We study $n$-vertex $d$-dimensional polytopes with at most one nonsimplex facet with, say, $d+s$ vertices, called {\it almost simplicial polytopes}. We provide tight lower and upper bound theorems for these polytopes as functions of $d,n$ and $s$, thus generalizing the classical Lower Bound Theorem by Barnette and Upper Bound Theorem by McMullen, which treat the case of $s=0$. We characterize the minimizers and provide examples of maximizers, for any $d$. Our construction of maximizers is a generalization of cyclic polytopes, based on a suitable variation of the moment curve, and is of indepen…
The Monotone Upper Bound Problem (Klee, 1965) asks if the number M(d,n) of vertices in a monotone path along edges of a d-dimensional polytope with n facets can be as large as conceivably possible: Is M(d,n) = M_{ubt}(d,n), the maximal number of vertices that a d-polytope with n facets can have according to the Upper Bound Theorem? We show that in dimension d=4, the answer is ``yes'', despite the fact that it is ``no'' if we restrict ourselves to the dual-to-cyclic polytopes. For each n>=5, we exhibit a realization of a polar-to-neighborly 4-dimensional polytope with n facets and a Hamilton pa…
The Monotone Upper Bound Problem asks for the maximal number M(d,n) of vertices on a strictly-increasing edge-path on a simple d-polytope with n facets. More specifically, it asks whether the upper bound M(d,n)<=M_{ubt}(d,n) provided by McMullen's (1970) Upper Bound Theorem is tight, where M_{ubt}(d,n) is the number of vertices of a dual-to-cyclic d-polytope with n facets. It was recently shown that the upper bound M(d,n)<=M_{ubt}(d,n) holds with equality for small dimensions (d<=4: Pfeifle, 2003) and for small corank (n<=d+2: Gärtner et al., 2001). Here we prove that it is not tight in genera…
It is well known that the permutahedron Pi_n has 2^n-2 facets. The Birkhoff polytope provides a symmetric extended formulation of Pi_n of size Theta(n^2). Recently, Goemans described a non-symmetric extended formulation of Pi_n of size Theta(n log(n)). In this paper, we prove that Omega(n^2) is a lower bound for the size of symmetric extended formulations of Pi_n.
We propose a variant of the Chvatal-Gomory procedure that will produce a sufficient set of facet normals for the integer hulls of all polyhedra {xx : Ax <= b} as b varies. The number of steps needed is called the small Chvatal rank (SCR) of A. We characterize matrices for which SCR is zero via the notion of supernormality which generalizes unimodularity. SCR is studied in the context of the stable set problem in a graph, and we show that many of the well-known facet normals of the stable set polytope appear in at most two rounds of our procedure. Our results reveal a uniform hypercyclic struct…

Let X be the set of integer points in some polyhedron. We investigate the smallest number of facets of any polyhedron whose set of integer points is X. This quantity, which we call the relaxation complexity of X, corresponds to the smallest number of linear inequalities of any integer program having X as the set of feasible solutions that does not use auxiliary variables. We show that the use of auxiliary variables is essential for constructing polynomial size integer programming formulations in many relevant cases. In particular, we provide asymptotically tight exponential lower bounds on the…
The question whether the Simplex Algorithm admits an efficient pivot rule remains one of the most important open questions in discrete optimization. While many natural, deterministic pivot rules are known to yield exponential running times, the random-facet rule was shown to have a subexponential running time. For a long time, Zadeh's rule remained the most prominent candidate for the first deterministic pivot rule with subexponential running time. We present a lower bound construction that shows that Zadeh's rule is in fact exponential in the worst case. Our construction is based on a close r…
