An excess over the extrapolation to the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray ranges of the thermal emission from the hot intracluster medium has been detected in a number of clusters of galaxies. We briefly present each of the satellites (EUVE, ROSAT PSPC and BeppoSAX, and presently XMM-Newton, Chandra and Suzaku) and their corresponding instrumental issues, which are responsible for the fact that this soft excess remains controversial in a number of cases. We then review the evidence for this soft X-ray excess and discuss the possible mechanisms (thermal and non-thermal) which could be responsible for this emission.

Evidence for excess extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission over a tail of X-ray gas bremsstrahlung emission has been building up recently, but in some cases remains controversial, mostly due to the moderate quality of the EUV data. AGB Connection and Ultraviolet Luminosity Excess in Elliptical Galaxies

Relying on infrared surface brightness fluctuactions to trace AGB properties in a sample of elliptical galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax clusters, we assess the puzzling origin of the "UV-upturn" phenomenon, recently traced down to the presence of a hot horizontal branch stellar component. We find that the UV-upturn actually signals a profound change in the c-m diagram of stellar populations in elliptical galaxies, involving both the hot stellar component and red-giant evolution.

Discovery of Radio-loud Broad Absorption Line Quasars Using Ultraviolet Excess and Deep Radio Selection

We report the discovery of five broad-absorption-line (BAL) QSOs in a complete sample of 111 ultraviolet excess (UVX) QSO candidates also detected in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey. All five BAL QSOs, which include two high-ionization BAL QSOs and three low-ionization BAL QSOs, are formally radio-loud. Of QSOs with z > 0.4, 3+/-2% show low-ionization BALs, and of QSOs with z > 1.5, all radio-loud, 9+/-5% show BALs; these frequencies are consistent with those of optical surveys. The X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet flux evolution of SS Cygni throughout outburst

We present the most complete multiwavelength coverage of any dwarf nova outburst: simultaneous optical, Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer, and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of SS Cygni throughout a narrow asymmetric outburst. Our data show that the high-energy outburst begins in the X-ray waveband 0.9--1.4d after the beginning of the optical rise and 0.6d before the extreme-ultraviolet rise. A Composite Extreme Ultraviolet QSO Spectrum from FUSE

The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) has surveyed a large sample (> 100) of active galactic nuclei in the low redshift universe (z < 1). Its response at short wavelengths makes it possible to measure directly the EUV spectral shape of QSOs and Seyfert 1 galaxies at z < 0.3. Using archival FUSE spectra, we form a composite extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrum of QSOs at z < 1 and compare it to UV/optical composite spectra of QSOs at higher redshift, particularly the composite spectrum from archival Hubble Space Telescope spectra.

Final Calibration of the Berkeley Extreme and Far-Ultraviolet Spectrometer on the ORFEUS-SPAS I and II Missions

The Berkeley Extreme and Far-Ultraviolet Spectrometer (BEFS) flew as part of the ORFEUS telescope on the ORFEUS-SPAS I and II space-shuttle missions in 1993 and 1996, respectively. The data obtained by this instrument have now entered the public domain. To facilitate their use by the astronomical community, we have re-extracted and re-calibrated both data sets, converted them into a standard (FITS) format, and placed them in the Multimission Archive at Space Telescope (MAST). Our final calibration yields improved wavelength scales and effective-area curves for both data sets.

An Ultraviolet-Excess Optical Candidate for the Luminous Globular Cluster X-ray Source in NGC1851

The intense, bursting X-ray source in the globular cluster NGC 1851 was one of the first cluster sources discovered, but has remained optically unidentified for 25 years. We report here on results from Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 multicolor images in NGC 1851. Our high spatial resolution images resolve ~200 objects in the 3'' radius Einstein X-ray error circle, 40 times as many as in previous ground-based work. Four Years of Extreme Ultraviolet Observations of Markarian 421: II. Temporal Analysis

The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite accumulated ~one million seconds of public data between 1994 and 1997 for the BL Lacertae object Markarian 421. This is the second of two papers in which we present the results of spectral and temporal analysis of this EUVE data set. Photometric Properties of Kiso Ultraviolet-Excess Galaxies in the Lynx-Ursa Major Region

We have performed a systematic study of several regions in the sky where the number of galaxies exhibiting star formation (SF) activity is greater than average. We used Kiso ultraviolet-excess galaxies (KUGs) as our SF-enhanced sample. By statistically comparing the KUG and non-KUG distributions, we discovered four KUG-rich regions with a size of $\sim 10^\circ \times 10^\circ$. One of these regions corresponds spatially to a filament of length $\sim 60 h^{-1}$ Mpc in the Lynx-Ursa Major region ($α\sim 9^{\rm h} - 10^{\rm h}, δ\sim 42^\circ - 48^\circ$). Quasi-Coherent Oscillations in the Extreme Ultraviolet Flux of the Dwarf Nova SS Cygni

Quasi-coherent oscillations have been detected in the extreme ultraviolet flux of the dwarf nova SS Cygni during observations with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer satellite of the rise and plateau phases of an anomalous outburst in 1993 August and a normal outburst in 1994 June/July. On both occasions, the oscillation turned on during the rise to outburst and persisted throughout the observation. Extreme Ultraviolet Emission from Abell 4059

We present the results of a search for Extreme Ultraviolet emission in A4059, a cluster with an X-ray emitting cluster gas. Our analysis of Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) Deep Survey observations of this cluster shows that it is associated with diffuse EUV emission. Outside the central 2 arcmin radius the entire EUV emission detected is explained by the low energy tail of the X-ray emitting gas. Four Years of Extreme Ultraviolet Observations of Markarian 421. I: Spectral Analysis

We analyzed the ~950 ks of spectroscopic data accumulated by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite between 1994 and 1997 for the BL Lacertae object Markarian 421. The EUV spectrum is well detected in the 70-110 A (112-177 eV) range and can be fitted by a power law model plus an absorption feature in the ~71-75 A range. Extreme Ultraviolet Emission from Clusters of Galaxies: Inverse Compton Radiation from a Relic Population of Cosmic Ray Electrons?

We suggest that the luminous extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission which has been detected recently from clusters of galaxies is Inverse Compton (IC) scattering of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation by low energy cosmic ray electrons in the intracluster medium. The cosmic ray electrons would have Lorentz factors of gamma ~ 300, and would lose energy primarily by emitting EUV radiation. Extreme Ultraviolet Emission in the Fornax Cluster of Galaxies

We present studies of the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) emission in the Fornax cluster of galaxies; a relatively nearby well-studied cluster with X-ray emitting cluster gas and a very large radio source. We examine both the large-scale (~size of the X-ray emitting cluster gas), and the small-scale (<arcmin) emission. We find that this cluster has large-scale diffuse EUV emission. However, at the sensitivity level of the existing EUVE data, this emission is due entirely to the low energy tail of the X-ray emitting gas. High-Resolution Spectroscopy of G191-B2B in the Extreme Ultraviolet

We report a high-resolution (R=3000-4000) spectroscopic observation of the DA white dwarf G191-B2B in the extreme ultraviolet band 220-245 A. A low- density ionised He component is clearly present along the line-of-sight, which if completely interstellar implies a He ionisation fraction considerably higher than is typical of the local interstellar medium. However, some of this material may be associated with circumstellar gas, which has been detected by analysis of the C IV absorption line doublet in an HST STIS spectrum. Optical Identification of Quasar 0917+7122 in the Direction of an Extreme-Ultraviolet Source

We report the optical identification of an $R=18.3$ mag, $z=2.432$ quasar at the position of a 6 cm radio source and a faint \rosat PSPC X-ray source. The quasar lies within the error circles of unidentified extreme-UV (EUV) detections by the \euve and \rosat WFC all-sky surveys at $\sim 400$ Å and $\sim 150$ Å, respectively. A 21 cm H I emission measurement in the direction of the quasar with a $21'$-diameter beam yields a total H I column density of $N_{H}=3.3\times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$, two orders of magnitude higher than the maximum allowed for transparency through the Galaxy in the EUV. On the Extreme Ultraviolet Emission from Galaxy Clusters

An extremely soft X-ray excess throughout galaxy clusters has been claimed as a new feature of these sytems, with important physical implications. We have reexamined this feature in the five clusters for which it has been discussed, using the most recent X-ray absorption cross sections, X-ray data processing techniques, and a consistent set of HI data. Ultraviolet Imagery of NGC 6752: A Test of Extreme Horizontal Branch Models

We present a 1620 A image of the nearby globular cluster NGC 6752 obtained with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) during the Astro-2 mission of the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1995 March. An ultraviolet-visible color-magnitude diagram (CMD) is derived for 216 stars matched with the visible photometry of Buonanno et al. (1986). This CMD provides a nearly complete census of the hot horizontal branch (HB) population with good temperature and luminosity discrimination for comparison with theoretical tracks. The Rest-Frame Extreme Ultraviolet Spectral Properties of QSOs

We use a sample of 332 Hubble Space Telescope spectra of 184 QSOs with z > 0.33 to study the typical ultraviolet spectral properties of QSOs, with emphasis on the ionizing continuum. Our sample is nearly twice as large as that of Zheng et al. (1997) and provides much better spectral coverage in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV). The overall composite continuum can be described by a power law with index alpha_EUV = -1.76 +/- 0.12 (f_nu ~ nu^alpha) between 500 and 1200 Angstroms.
