A general method to derive the diagonal representation for a generic matrix valued quantum Hamiltonian is proposed. In this approach new mathematical objects like non-commuting operators evolving with the Planck constant promoted as a running variable are introduced. This method leads to a formal compact expression for the diagonal Hamiltonian which can be expanded in a power series of the Planck constant. In particular, we provide an explicit expression for the diagonal representation of a generic Hamiltonian to the second order in the Planck constant. This last result is applied, as a physical illustration, to Dirac electrons and neutrinos in external fields.
A new method of diagonalisation of the XY-Hamiltonian of inhomogeneous open linear chains with periodic (in space) changing Larmor frequencies and coupling constants is developed. As an example of application, multiple quantum dynamics of an inhomogeneous chain consisting of 1001 spins is investigated. Intensities of multiple quantum coherences are calculated for arbitrary inhomogeneous chains in the approximation of the next nearest interactions. {\it Key words:} linear spin chain, nearest--neighbour approximation, three--diagonal matrices, diagonalisation, fermions, multiple--quantum NMR, mu…
We show that a large class of dissipative systems can be brought to a canonical form by introducing complex co-ordinates in phase space and a complex-valued hamiltonian. A naive canonical quantization of these systems lead to non-hermitean hamiltonian operators. The excited states are unstable and decay to the ground state . We also compute the tunneling amplitude across a potential barrier.
A theory of transformation is presented for the diagonalization of a Hamiltonian that is quadratic in creation and annihilation operators or in coordinates and momenta. It is the systemization and theorization of Dirac and Bogoliubov-Valatin transformations, and thus provides us an operational procedure to answer, in a direct manner, the questions as to whether a quadratic Hamiltonian is diagonalizable, whether the diagonalization is unique, and how the transformation can be constructed if the diagonalization exists. The underlying idea is to consider the dynamic matrix. Each quadratic Hamilto…
An extension of the super Korteweg-de Vries integrable system in terms of operator valued functions is obtained. In particular the extension contains the $N=1$ Super KdV and coupled systems with functions valued on a symplectic space. We introduce a Miura transformation for the extended system and obtain its hamiltonian structure. We also obtain an extended Gardner transformation which allows to find an infinite number of conserved quantities of the extended system.
We consider QM with non-Hermitian quasi-diagonalizable Hamiltonians, i.e. the Hamiltonians having a number of Jordan cells in particular biorthogonal bases. The "self-orthogonality" phenomenon is clarified in terms of a correct spectral decomposition and it is shown that "self-orthogonal" states never jeopardize resolution of identity and thereby quantum averages of observables. The example of a complex potential leading to one Jordan cell in the Hamiltonian is constructed and its origin from level coalescence is elucidated. Some puzzles with zero-binorm bound states in continuous spectrum are…
Most classical mechanical systems are based on dynamical variables whose values are real numbers. Energy conservation is then guaranteed if the dynamical equations are phrased in terms of a Hamiltonian function, which then leads to differential equations in the time variable. If these real dynamical variables are instead replaced by integers, and also the time variable is restricted to integers, it appears to be hard to enforce energy conservation unless one can also derive a Hamiltonian formalism for that case. We here show how the Hamiltonian formalism works here, and how it may yield the us…
We prove local and global versions of Borg-Marchenko-type uniqueness theorems for half-lattice and full-lattice CMV operators (CMV for Cantero, Moral, and Velazquez) with matrix-valued Verblunsky coefficients. While our half-lattice results are formulated in terms of matrix-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh functions, our full-lattice results involve the diagonal and main off-diagonal Green's matrices. We also develop the basics of Weyl-Titchmarsh theory for CMV operators with matrix-valued Verblunsky coefficients as this is of independent interest and an essential ingredient in proving the corresponding…
We consider a family of discrete Jacobi operators on the one-dimensional integer lattice, with the diagonal and the off-diagonal entries given by two sequences generated by the Fibonacci substitution on two letters. We show that the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure, and discuss its fractal structure and Hausdorff dimension. We also extend some known results on the diagonal and the off-diagonal Fibonacci Hamiltonians.
We introduce a Frobenius algebra-valued KP hierarchy and show the existence of Frobenius algebra-valued $τ$-function for this hierarchy. In addition we construct its Hamiltonian structures by using the Adler-Dickey-Gelfand method. As a byproduct of these constructions, we show that the coupled KP hierarchy defined by P.Casati and G.Ortenzi in \cite{CO2006} has at least $n$-``basic" different local bi-Hamiltonian structures. Finally, via the construction of the second Hamiltonian structures, we obtain some local matrix, or Frobenius algebra-valued, generalizations of classical $W$-algebras.
We introduce a bi-Hamiltonian hierarchy on the cotangent bundle of the real Lie group ${\mathrm{GL}}(n,{\mathbb{C}})$, and study its Poisson reduction with respect to the action of the product group ${{\mathrm U}(n)} \times {{\mathrm U}(n)}$ arising from left- and right-multiplications. One of the pertinent Poisson structures is the canonical one, while the other is suitably transferred from the real Heisenberg double of ${\mathrm{GL}}(n,{\mathbb{C}})$. When taking the quotient of $T^*{\mathrm{GL}}(n,{\mathbb{C}})$ we focus on the dense open subset of ${\mathrm{GL}}(n,{\mathbb{C}})$ whose elem…
The resolution of the Schrödinger equation for the translation-invariant $N$-body harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian in $D$ dimensions with one-body and two-body interactions is performed by diagonalizing a matrix $\mathbb{J}$ of order $N-1$. It has been previously established that the diagonalization can be analytically performed in specific situations, such as for $N \le 5$ or for $N$ identical particles. We show that the matrix $\mathbb{J}$ is diagonal, and thus the problem can be analytically solved, for any number of arbitrary masses provided some specific relations exist between the couplin…
We study quantum chains whose Hamiltonians are perturbations by bounded interactions of short range of a Hamiltonian that does not couple the degrees of freedom located at different sites of the chain and has a strictly positive energy gap above its ground-state energy. We prove that, for small values of a coupling constant, the spectral gap of the perturbed Hamiltonian above its ground-state energy is bounded from below by a positive constant uniformly in the length of the chain. In our proof we use a novel method based on local Lie-Schwinger conjugations of the Hamiltonians associated with c…
For the periodic matrix-valued Jacobi operator $J$ we obtain the estimate of the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum $|\s(J)|\le4 \min_n\Tr(a_na_n^*)^\frac12$, where $a_n$ are off-diagonal elements of $J$. Moreover estimates of width of spectral bands are obtained.
We define and examine certain matrix-valued multiplicative functionals with local Kato potential terms and use probabilistic techniques to prove that the semigroups of the corresponding partial differential operators with matrix-valued coefficients are spatially continuous and have a jointly continuous integral kernel. These partial differential operators include Yang-Mills type Hamiltonians and Pauli type Hamiltonians, with "electrical" potentials that are elements of the matrix-valued local Kato class.
We study quantum chains whose Hamiltonians are perturbations by interactions of short range of a Hamiltonian that does not couple the degrees of freedom located at different sites of the chain and has a strictly positive energy gap above its ground-state energy. For interactions that are form-bounded w.r.t. the on-site Hamiltonian terms, we prove that the spectral gap of the perturbed Hamiltonian above its ground-state energy is bounded from below by a positive constant uniformly in the length of the chain, for small values of a coupling constant. In our proof we use a novel method introduced …
We present a new type of matrix regularization, which is based on matrix-valued functions defined on a cylinder. If non-commutative coordinates of a fuzzy space are defined by a regularization of such functions, we show that a classical limit for the fuzzy spaces exists, when the matrix-valued functions nearly commute. In this case, the classical limit of the fuzzy space is a manifold, which is composed of coordinate patches that are defined by the diagonal entries of the diagonalized matrix-valued functions. As applications, an interpolation for direct sums of fuzzy spaces is described and a …
In this paper we discuss $R$-matrix-valued Lax pairs for ${\rm sl}_N$ Calogero-Moser model and their relation to integrable quantum long-range spin chains of the Haldane-Shastry-Inozemtsev type. First, we construct the $R$-matrix-valued Lax pairs for the third flow of the classical Calogero-Moser model. Then we notice that the scalar parts (in the auxiliary space) of the $M$-matrices corresponding to the second and third flows have form of special spin exchange operators. The freezing trick restricts them to quantum Hamiltonians of long-range spin chains. We show that for a special choice of t…
Scattering is a ubiquitous phenomenon which is observed in a variety of physical systems which span a wide range of length scales. The scattering matrix is the key quantity which provides a complete description of the scattering process. The universal features of scattering in chaotic systems is most generally modeled by the Heidelberg approach which introduces stochasticity to the scattering matrix at the level of the Hamiltonian describing the scattering center. The statistics of the scattering matrix is obtained by averaging over the ensemble of random Hamiltonians of appropriate symmetry. …
We take the Bose-Hubbard model to illustrate exact diagonalization techniques in a pedagogical way. We follow the road of first generating all the basis vectors, then setting up the Hamiltonian matrix with respect to this basis, and finally using the Lanczos algorithm to solve low lying eigenstates and eigenvalues. Emphasis is placed on how to enumerate all the basis vectors and how to use the hashing trick to set up the Hamiltonian matrix or matrices corresponding to other quantities. Although our route is not necessarily the most efficient one in practice, the techniques and ideas introduced…
Consider the Jacobi operators $\cJ$ given by $(\cJ y)_n=a_ny_{n+1}+b_ny_n+a_{n-1}^*y_{n-1}$, $y_n\in \C^m$ (here $y_0=y_{p+1}=0$), where $b_n=b_n^*$ and $a_n:\det a_n\ne 0$ are the sequences of $m\ts m$ matrices, $n=1,..,p$. We study two cases: (i) $a_n=a_n^*>0$; (ii) $a_n$ is a lower triangular matrix with real positive entries on the diagonal (the matrix $\cJ$ is $(2m+1)$-band $mp\ts mp$ matrix with positive entries on the first and the last diagonals). The spectrum of $\cJ$ is a finite sequence of real eigenvalues $ł_1<...<ł_N$, where each eigenvalue $ł_j$ has multiplicity $k_j\le m$. We sh…
We study two seminal approaches, developed by B. Simon and J. Kisyński, to the well-posedness of the Schrödinger equation with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. In both cases the Hamiltonian is assumed to be semibounded from below and to have constant form domain but a possibly non-constant operator domain. The problem is addressed in the abstract setting, without assuming any specific functional expression for the Hamiltonian. The connection between the two approaches is the relation between sesquilinear forms and the bounded linear operators representing them. We provide a characterization of co…
For a gaussian interaction V(x,y)=λe^{-(x^2+y^2)/r^2} with long range r>>l_B, l_B the magnetic length, we rigorously prove that the eigenvalues of the finite volume Hamiltonian H_{N,LL}=P_{LL} H_N P_{LL}, H_N=\sum_{i=1}^N [-i\hbar \nabla_{x_i}-eA(x_i)]^2+\sum_{i,j; i\ne j} V(x_i-x_j), \rotA=(0,0,B), and P_{LL} the projection onto the lowest Landau level, are given by the following set: Let M be the number of flux quanta flowing through the sample such that ν=N/M is the filling factor. Then each eigenvalue is given by E=E(n_1,...,n_N)=\sum_{i,j=1;i\ne j}^N W(n_i-n_j). Here n_i\in {1,2,...,M}, n…
We consider a natural variant of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of compact Kähler manifolds, in the presence of a Hamiltonian circle action lifting to the quantizing line bundle. Assuming that the moment map is positive, we study the diagonal asymptotics of the associated Szegö and Toeplitz operators, and specifically their relation to the moment map and to the geometry of a certain symplectic quotient. When the underlying action is trivial and the moment map is taken to be identically equal to one, this scheme coincides with the usual Berezin-Toeplitz quantization. This continues previous work…
