We develop an unconditionally stable numerical method for solving the coupling between two fluids (frictional forces/heatings, ionization, and recombination), and investigate the dynamical condensation process of thermally unstable gas that is provided by the shock waves in a weakly ionized and magnetized interstellar medium by using two-dimensional two-fluid magnetohydrodynamical simulations. If we neglect the effect of magnetic field, it is known that condensation driven by thermal instability can generate high density clouds whose physical condition corresponds to molecular clouds (precursor of molecular clouds). In this paper, we study the effect of magnetic field on the evolution of supersonic converging HI flows and focus on the case in which the orientation of magnetic field to converging flows is orthogonal. We show that the magnetic pressure gradient parallel to the flows prevents the formation of high density and high column density clouds, but instead generates fragmented, filamentary HI clouds. With this restricted geometry, magnetic field drastically diminishes the opportunity of fast molecular cloud formation directly from the warm neutral medium, in contrast to the case without magnetic field.
MHD turbulence plays a central role in the physics of star-forming molecular clouds and the interstellar medium. I here show that MHD turbulence in molecular clouds must be driven to account for the observed supersonic motions in the clouds, as even strongly magnetized turbulence decays quickly. I then show that driven MHD turbulence can globally support gravitationally unstable regions, but local collapse inevitably occurs. Differences in the strength of driving and the gas density may explain the very different rates of star formation observed in different galaxies. The driving mechanism for…
We examine the magnetic reconnection triggered by a supernova (or a point explosion) in interstellar medium, by performing two-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical simulations with high spatial resolution. We found that the magnetic reconnection starts long after a supernova shock (fast-mode MHD shock) passes a current sheet. The current sheet evolves as follows: (i) Tearing-mode instability is excited by the supernova shock, and the current sheet becomes thin in its nonlinear stage. (ii) The current-sheet thinning is saturated when the current-sheet thickness becomes comp…
Recent advances in understanding of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence call for substantial revisions in our understanding of cosmic ray transport. In this paper we use gyroresonance recently obtained scaling laws for MHD modes to calculate the scattering frequency for cosmic rays in the ISM. We consider gyroresonance with MHD modes (Alfvenic, slow and fast) and transit-time damping (TTD) by fast modes. We conclude that the gyroresonance with fast modes is the dominant contribution to cosmic ray scattering for the typical interstellar conditions. In contrast to earlier studies, we find that …
Two dimensional compressible magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) simulations run for 20 crossing times on a 800x640 grid with two stable thermal states show persistent hierarchical density structures and Kolmogorov turbulent motions in the interaction zone between incoming non-linear Alfven waves. These structures and motions are similar to what are commonly observed in weakly self-gravitating interstellar clouds, suggesting that these clouds get their fractal structures from non-linear magnetic waves generated in the intercloud medium; no internal source of turbulent energy is necessary. The clumps …
We calculate the relative grain-grain motions arising from interstellar magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. The MHD turbulence includes both fluid motions and magnetic fluctuations. While the fluid motions accelerate grains through hydro-drag, the electromagnetic fluctuations accelerate grains through resonant interactions. We consider both incompressive (Alfvén) and compressive (fast and slow) MHD modes and use descriptions of MHD turbulence obtained in Cho & Lazarian (2002). Calculations of grain relative motion are made for realistic grain charging and interstellar turbulence that is cons…
Interstellar medium is turbulent and this induces relative motions of dust grains. We calculate relative velocities of charged grains in a partially ionized magnetized gas. We account for anisotropy of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, grain coupling with magnetic field, and the turbulence cutoff arising from the ambipolar drag. We obtain grain velocities for turbulence with parameters consistent with those in HI and dark clouds. Those velocities are smaller than those in earlier papers, where MHD effects were disregarded. Finally, we compare grain velocities arising from photoelectric emi…
Radio-wave scintillation observations reveal a nearly Kolmogorov spectrum of density fluctuations in the ionized interstellar medium. Although this density spectrum is suggestive of turbulence, no theory relevant to its interpretation exists. We calculate the density spectrum in turbulent magnetized plasmas by extending the theory of incompressible MHD turbulence given by Goldreich & Sridhar to include the effects of compressibility and particle transport. Our most important results are as follows. (1) Density fluctuations are due to the slow mode and the entropy mode. Both modes are passively…
We present two-dimensional MHD simulations of the evolution of a young Type Ia supernova remnant during its interaction with an interstellar cloud of comparable size at impact. We include for the first time in such simulations explicit relativistic electron transport, including spectral information using a simple but effective scheme that follows their acceleration at shocks and subsequent transport. From this information we also model radio synchrotron emission, including spectra. The principal conclusions from these experiments are: 1) Independent of the cloud interaction, the SNR reverse sh…
We present a number of statistical tools for obtaining studying turbulence in molecular clouds and diffuse interstellar medium. For our tests we used of three-dimensional 512 cube compressible MHD isothermal simulations performed for different sonic and Alfvenic Mach numbers. We introduce the bispectrum, a new tool for statistical studies of the interstellar medium which, unlike an ordinary power spectrum of turbulence, preserves the phase information of the stochastic field. We show that the bispectra of the 3D stochastic density field and of column densities, available from observations, are…
The effect of viscosity and of converging flows on the formation of blobs in the slow solar wind is analysed by means of resistive MHD simulations. The regions above coronal streamers where blobs are formed (Sheeley et al., 1997) are simulated using a model previously proposed by Einaudi et al. (1999). The result of our investigation is twofold. First, we demonstrate a new mechanism for enhanced momentum transfer between a forming blob and the fast solar wind surrounding it. The effect is caused by the longer range of the electric field caused by the tearing instability forming the blob. The e…
This two-part review summarizes interstellar turbulence and its implications. The first part begins with diagnostics and energy sources. Turbulence theory is considered in detail, including the basic fluid equations, solenoidal and compressible modes, global inviscid quadratic invariants, scaling arguments, energy transfer and cascade, velocity probability distributions, and turbulent pressure. Theories of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, including collisionless MHD turbulence, are discussed, emphasizing various proposals for energy spectra. A large variety of numerical simulations of interstel…
Theoretical approaches to low-frequency magnetized turbulence in collisionless and weakly collisional astrophysical plasmas are reviewed. The proper starting point for an analytical description of these plasmas is kinetic theory, not fluid equations. The anisotropy of the turbulence is used to systematically derive a series of reduced analytical models. Above the ion gyroscale, it is shown rigourously that the Alfven waves decouple from the electron-density and magnetic-field-strength fluctuations and satisfy the Reduced MHD equations. The density and field-strength fluctuations (slow waves an…
In order to determine the circumstances under which isolated SNRs are capable of rising into and enriching the thick disk and galactic halo, simulations of supernova remnants are performed with the FLASH magnetohydrodynamic code. We performed simulations in which the interstellar magnetic field is parallel to or perpendicular to the galactic plane as well as a simulation without a magnetic field. The ambient gas density distribution and gravitational potential are based on observations of our galaxy. We evolve the remnants to ages of roughly 10,000,000 years. For our simulation without a magne…
Recent studies suggest that when magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is excited by stirring a plasma at large scales, the cascade of energy from large to small scales is anisotropic, in the sense that small-scale fluctuations satisfy the inequality k_parallel << k_perp, where k_parallel and k_perp are, respectively, the components of a fluctuation's wave vector parallel and perpendicular to the background magnetic field. Such anisotropic fluctuations are very inefficient at scattering cosmic rays. Results based on the quasilinear approximation for scattering of cosmic rays by anisotropic MHD …
The orientation of the local interstellar magnetic field introduces asymmetries in the heliosphere that affect the location of heliospheric radio emissions and the streaming direction of ions from the termination shock of the solar wind. We combine observations of radio emissions and energetic particle streaming with extensive 3D MHD computer simulations of magnetic field draping over the heliopause to show that the plane of the local interstellar field is ~ 60-90 degrees from the galactic plane. This suggests that the field orientation in the Local Interstellar Cloud differs from that of a la…
Multi-wavelength observations from radio to soft X-ray bands of large-scale galactic spiral structures offer synthesized and comprehensive views of nearby disk galaxies. In the presence of a massive dark-matter halo, the density-wave dynamics on galactic scales involves the stellar disk, the gas disk of interstellar medium (ISM), the magnetic field, and the cosmic-ray gas (CRG). In this paper, we explore the dynamic and electromagnetic interplay between the magnetized ISM disk and CRG disk so that structural and diagnostic features of optical, infrared, and synchrotron radio-continuum emission…
Using linear kinetic plasma theory the relation between electron density and magnetic field fluctuations for low-frequency plasma waves for Maxwellian background distribution functions of arbitrary temperatures in an uniform magnetic field is derived. By taking the non-relativistic temperature limit this relation is calculated for the diffuse intercloud medium in our Galaxy. The diffuse intercloud medium is the dominant phase of the interstellar medium with respect to radio wave propagation, dispersion and rotation measure studies. The differences between the relation of electron density and m…
The study of incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence gives useful insights on many astrophysical problems. We describe a pseudo-spectral MHD code suitable for the study of incompressible turbulence. We review our recent works on direct three-dimensional numerical simulations for MHD turbulence in a periodic box. In those works, we use a pseudo-spectral code to solve the incompressible MHD equations. We first discuss the structure and properties of turbulence as functions of scale. The results are consistent with the scaling law recently proposed by Goldreich & Sridhar. The scaling …
We show the initial results of our 3D MHD simulations of the flow of the Galactic atmosphere as it responds to a spiral perturbation in the potential. In our standard case, as the gas approaches the arm, there is a downward converging flow that terminates in a complex of shocks just ahead of the midplane density peak. The density maximum slants forward at high z, preceeded by a similarly leaning shock. The latter diverts the flow upward and over the arm, as in a hydraulic jump. Behind the gaseous arm, the flow falls again, generating further secondary shocks as it approaches the lower z materi…
In astrophysical situations, e.g. in the interstellar medium (ISM), neutrals can provide viscous damping on scales much larger than the magnetic diffusion scale. Through numerical simulations, we have found that the magnetic field can have a rich structure below the dissipation cutoff scale. This implies that magnetic fields in the ISM can have structures on scales much smaller than parsec scales. Our results show that the magnetic energy contained in a wavenumber band is independent of the wavenumber and magnetic structures are intermittent and extremely anisotropic. We discuss the relation b…
The importance of the interstellar magnetic field is studied in relation to the evolutions of superbubbles with a three-dimensional (3D) numerical magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulation. A superbubble is a large supernova remnant driven by sequential supernova explosions in an OB association. Its evolution is affected by the density stratification in the galactic disk. After the size reaches 2--3 times the density scale-height, the superbubble expands preferentially in the $z$-direction. Finally it can punch out the gas disk (blow-out). On the other hand, the magnetic field running parallel to…
We analyze 3D numerical simulations of driven incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in a periodic box threaded by a moderately strong external magnetic field. We sum over nonlinear interactions within Fourier wavebands and find that the time scale for the energy cascade is consistent with the Goldreich-Sridhar model of strong MHD turbulence. Using higher order longitudinal structure functions we show that the turbulent motions in the plane perpendicular to the local mean magnetic field are similar to ordinary hydrodynamic turbulence while motions parallel to the field are consist…
Pulsar bow-shock nebulae are a class of pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) that form when the pulsar wind is confined by the ram pressure of the ambient medium, and are usually associated with old pulsars, that have already emerged from the progenitor Supernova Remnant (SNR). Until a few years ago these nebulae were mainly observed as \halpha sources; recently, also non-thermal emission has been detected. This is the signature of accelerated particles gyrating in a magnetic field. In the same way as \halpha radiation is a tool for studying the layer of shocked Interstellar Medium (ISM), the non-therma…
It is generally recognized that the interstellar medium has a vast range of densities and temperatures. While these two properties are usually anticorrelated with each other, there are nevertheless variations in their product, i.e., the thermal gas pressure divided by the Boltzmann constant k. In neutral gas, the relative populations of neutral carbon atoms in the excited fine-structure states can give a direct measure of a local thermal pressure. A picture of the distribution function for thermal pressures in H I regions is now arising from a survey of interstellar C I absorption features in …
We review recent results from numerical simulations and related models of MHD turbulence in the interstellar medium (ISM) and in molecular clouds. We discuss the implications of turbulence for the processes of cloud formation and evolution, and the determination of clouds' physical properties. Numerical simulations of the turbulent ISM to date have included magnetic fields, self-gravity, parameterized heating and cooling, modeled star formation and other turbulent inputs. The structures which form reproduce well observed velocity-size scaling properties, while predicting the non-existence of a…
We explore the importance of magnetic-field-oriented thermal conduction in the interaction of supernova remnant (SNR) shocks with radiative gas clouds and in determining the mass and energy exchange between the clouds and the hot surrounding medium. We perform 2.5D MHD simulations of a shock impacting on an isolated gas cloud, including anisotropic thermal conduction and radiative cooling; we consider the representative case of a Mach 50 shock impacting on a cloud ten-fold denser than the ambient medium. We consider different configurations of the ambient magnetic field and compare MHD models …
We present results from three-dimensional (3-D) numerical simulations investigating the magnetohydrodynamics of cloud-wind interactions. The initial cloud is spherical while the magnetic field is uniform and transverse to the cloud motion. A simplified analytical model that describes the magnetic energy evolution in front of the cloud is developed and compared with simulation results. In addition, it is found the interaction of the cloud with a magnetized interstellar medium (ISM) results in the formation of a highly structured magnetotail. The magnetic flux in the wake of the cloud organizes …
High--resolution 2D--MHD numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the effects of continuing infall of clumpy gas in extended HI galactic disks. Given a certain accretion rate, the response of the disk depends on its surface gas density and temperature. For Galactic conditions at a galactocentric distance of ~20 kpc, and for mass accretion rates consistent with current empirical and theoretical determinations in the Milky Way, the rain of compact high velocity clouds onto the disk can maintain transonic turbulent motions in the warm phase (~2500 K) of HI. Hence, the HI line wi…
Modeling the structure of molecular clouds depends on good methods to statistically compare simulations with observations in order to constrain the models. Here we characterize a suite of hydrodynamical and magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of supersonic turbulence using an averaged wavelet transform, the Delta-variance, that has been successfully used to characterize observations. We find that, independent of numerical resolution and dissipation, the only models that produce scale-free, power-law Delta-variance spectra are those with hypersonic Mach numbers above M ~ 4, while slower sup…
We have computed line emission cooling rates for the main cooling species in models of interstellar molecular clouds. The models are based on numerical simulations of super-sonic magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. Non-LTE radiative transfer calculations have been performed to properly account for the complex density and velocity structures in the MHD simulations. Three models are used. Two of the models are based on MHD simulations with different magnetic field strength and the third includes the computation of self-gravity (in the super-Alfvenic regime of turbulence). The density and velo…
How does turbulence contribute to the formation and structure of the dense interstellar medium (ISM)? Molecular clouds are dense, high-pressure objects. It is usually argued that gravitational confinement causes the high pressures, and that the clouds are (magneto)hydrostaticobjects supported by a balance between magnetic and turbulent pressures and gravity. However, magnetic pressures appear too weak, and MHD turbulent support not only requires driving, but also results in continuing gravitational collapse, as has now been demonstrated in simulations reaching 512^3 zones. Models of supernova-…
Magnetohydrodynamical simulations are presented of a magnetized pulsar wind interacting directly with the interstellar medium, or, in the case of a surrounding supernova remnant, with the associated freely expanding ejecta of the progenitor star. In both cases the simulations show that the pulsar wind nebula will be elongated due to the dynamical influence of the toroidal magnetic fields, which confirm predictions from a semi-analytical model presented by Begelman & Li. The simulations follow the expansion of the pulsar wind nebula when the latter is bounded by a strong shock and show that the…
In this paper we test the results of a recent analytical study by Lazarian and Pogosyan, on the statistics of emissivity in velocity channel maps, in the case of realistic density and velocity fields obtained from numerical simulations of MHD turbulence in the interstellar medium (ISM). To compensate for the lack of well-developed inertial ranges in the simulations due to the limited resolution, we apply a procedure for modifying the spectral slopes of the fields while preserving the spatial structures. We find that the density and velocity are moderately correlated in space and prove that the…
We discuss HD and MHD compressible turbulence as a cloud-forming and cloud-structuring mechanism in the ISM. Results from a numerical model of the turbulent ISM at large scales suggest that the phase-like appearance of the medium, the typical values of the densities and magnetic field strengths in the intercloud medium, as well as Larson's velocity dispersion-size scaling relation in clouds may be understood as consequences of the interstellar turbulence. However, the density-size relation appears to only hold for the densest simulated clouds, there existing a large population of small, low-de…
Velocity anisotropy induced by MHD turbulence is investigated using computational simulations and molecular line observations of the Taurus molecular cloud. A new analysis method is presented to evaluate the degree and angle of velocity anisotropy using spectroscopic imaging data of interstellar clouds. The efficacy of this method is demonstrated on model observations derived from three dimensional velocity and density fields from the set of numerical MHD simulations that span a range of magnetic field strengths. The analysis is applied to 12CO J=1-0 imaging of a sub-field within the Taurus mo…
We study scaling relations of compressible strongly magnetized turbulence. We find a good correspondence of our results with the Fleck (1996) model of compressible hydrodynamic turbulence. In particular, we find that the density-weighted velocity, i.e. $u \equiv ρ^{1/3} v$, proposed in Kritsuk et al. (2007) obeys the Kolmogorov scaling, i.e. $E_{u}(k)\sim k^{-5/3}$ for the high Mach number turbulence. Similarly, we find that the exponents of the third order structure functions for $u$ stay equal to unity for the all the Mach numbers studied. The scaling of higher order correlations obeys the S…
Supersonic turbulent flows of magnetized gas are believed to play an important role in the dynamics of star-forming clouds in galaxies. Understanding statistical properties of such flows is crucial for developing a theory of star formation. In this letter we propose a unified approach for obtaining the velocity scaling in compressible and super--Alfvénic turbulence, valid for arbitrary sonic Mach number, \ms. We demonstrate with numerical simulations that the scaling can be described with the She--Lévêque formalism, where only one parameter, interpreted as the Hausdorff dimension of the most i…
Turbulence is the most common state of astrophysical flows. In typical astrophysical fluids, turbulence is accompanied by strong magnetic fields, which has a large impact on the dynamics of the turbulent cascade. Recently, there has been a significant breakthrough on the theory of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. For the first time we have a scaling model that is supported by both observations and numerical simulations. We review recent progress in studies of both incompressible and compressible turbulence. We compare Iroshnikov-Kraichnan and Goldreich-Sridhar models, and discuss scalings…
We present numerical simulations and explore scalings and anisotropy of compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. Our study covers both gas pressure dominated (high beta) and magnetically dominated (low beta) plasmas at different Mach numbers. In addition, we present results for superAlfvenic turbulence and discuss in what way it is similar to the subAlfvenic turbulence. We describe a technique of separating different magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes (slow, fast and Alfven) and apply it to our simulations. We show that, for both high and low beta cases, Alfven and slow modes reveal the…
