Double-peaked oxygen lines in the nebular spectra of two peculiar Type Ib/c Supernovae (SN Ib/c) have been interpreted as off-axis views of a GRB-jet or unipolar blob ejections. Here we present late-time spectra of 8 SN IIb, Ib and Ic and show that this phenomenon is common and should not be so firmly linked to extraordinary explosion physics. The line profiles are most likely caused by ejecta expanding with a torus- or disk-like geometry. Double-peaked oxygen profiles are not necessarily the indicator of a mis-directed GRB jet.
We investigate relationships between observed auroral and nebular oxygen line fluxes in spectra of HII regions. We find a relation that is metallicity-dependent at low metallicities, but becomes independent of metallicity (within the uncertainties of the available data) above 12+logO/H ~ 8.25, i.e. there is one-to-one correspondance (the ff - relation) between auroral and nebular oxygen line fluxes in spectra of high-metallicity HII regions. The ff - relation allows one to estimate the flux in the auroral line from strong oxygen line measurements. This solves the problem of the electron temper…
We obtained new optical spectra of 13 H II regions in WLM with EFOSC2; oxygen abundances are derived for nine H II regions. The temperature-sensitive [O III] 4363 emission line was measured in two bright H II regions HM7 and HM9. The direct oxygen abundances for HM7 and HM9 are 12+log(O/H) = 7.72 +/- 0.04 and 7.91 +/- 0.04, respectively. We adopt a mean oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H) = 7.83 +/- 0.06. This corresponds to [O/H] = -0.83 dex, or 15% of the solar value. In H II regions where [O III] 4363 was not measured, oxygen abundances derived with bright-line methods are in general agreement …
To test the existence of a possible radial gradient in oxygen abundances within the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822, we have obtained optical spectra of 19 nebulae with the EFOSC2 spectrograph on the 3.6-m telescope at ESO La Silla. The extent of the measured nebulae spans galactocentric radii in the range between 0.05 kpc and 2 kpc (over four exponential scale lengths). In five H II regions (Hubble I, Hubble V, Kalpha, Kbeta, KD28e), the temperature-sensitive [O III] 4363 emission line was detected, and direct oxygen abundances were derived. Oxygen abundances for the remaining H I…
The results of optical spectroscopy of H II regions in a sample of southern dwarf irregulars consisting of five dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus A group, four dwarfs in the Sculptor group, and eight additional dwarf galaxies are presented. Oxygen abundances are derived using the direct method where [O III]4363 is detected; otherwise, abundances are derived with the bright-line method using the McGaugh and the Pilyugin calibrations. ESO358-G060 has the lowest oxygen abundance (12+log(O/H) = 7.32), which is comparable to the value for the second most metal-poor galaxy known (SBS0335-052). In all,…
We present an empirical calibration of nebular abundances based on the strong emission lines of [SII] and [SIII] in the red part of the spectrum through the definition of a sulphur abundance parameter S23. This calibration presents two important advantages against the commonly used one based on the optical oxygen lines: it remains single-valued up to abundances close to solar and is rather independent of the degree of ionization of the nebula.
We present a new analysis of the main empirical calibrators of oxygen abundance for ionised gas nebulae. With that aim we have compiled an extensive sample of objects with emission line data including the near IR [SIII] lines and the weak auroral lines which allow for the determination of the gas electron temperature. For all the objects the oxygen abundances have been derived in a homogeneus way, using the most recent sets of atomic coefficients and taking into the account the effect of particle density on the temperature of O$^+$. The residuals between directly and empirically-derived abunda…
The problem of determination of the electron temperature t_2 in the OII zone of high-metallicity HII region was examined. It was shown that the ratio of nebular to auroral nitrogen line intensities, which is an indicator of the electron temperature t_2, can be expressed in terms of the nebular line intensities of oxygen. This solves the problem of the determination of the electron temperature t_2, since the oxygen nebular lines are strong and, consequently, are readily observable. A relation between electron temperatures in the OII and OIII zones in high-metallicity HII regions was studied. It…
The nebular spectra of the energetic Type Ic supernova SN1998bw (hypernova) are studied. The transition to the nebular phase occurred at an epoch of about 100 days after outburst, which is assumed to coincide with GRB980425. Early in the nebular epoch the spectra show the characteristics of a typical SN Ic spectrum, with strong lines of [OI], CaII and MgI], and lines of [FeII]. However, the [FeII] lines are unusually strong for a SN Ic. Also, lines of different elements have different widths, indicating different expansion velocities. In particular, iron appears to expand more rapidly than oxy…
The nebular spectra of the broad-lined, SN 1998bw-like Type Ic SN 2002ap are studied by means of synthetic spectra. Two different modelling techniques are employed. In one technique, the SN ejecta are treated as a single zone, while in the other a density and abundance distribution in velocity is used from an explosion model. In both cases, heating caused by gamma-ray and positron deposition is computed (in the latter case using a Monte Carlo technique to describe the propagation of gamma-rays and positrons), as is cooling via forbidden-line emission. The results are compared, and although gen…
We report on a 39 ks observation of the 7.7-s low-mass X-ray binary pulsar 4U1626-67 with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. This ultracompact system consists of a disk-accreting magnetic neutron star and a very low mass, hydrogen-depleted companion in a 42-min binary. We have resolved the previously reported Ne/O emission line complex near 1 keV into Doppler pairs of broadened (2500 km/s FWHM) lines from highly ionized Ne and O. In most cases, the blue and red line components are of comparable strength, with blueshifts of 1550-2610 km/s…
We report the results of our observations of the nebular complex MH9/10/11, associated with the ULX HoIX X-1, with scanning Fabry-Perot Interferometer. Two regions differing by their kinematics and line ratios may be distinguished, roughly corresponding to the bubble nebula MH9/10 and fainter HII-region MH11. For MH9/10 we find the expansion rate of 20-70km/s that is different for the approaching and receding parts. MH11 is characterised by very low velocity dispersion (less than or about 15km/s) and nearly constant line-of-sight velocities. Properties of MH11 may be explained by photoionizati…
Absolute and differential chemical abundances are presented for the largest group of massive stars in M31 studied to date. These results were derived from intermediate resolution spectra of seven B-type supergiants, lying within four OB associations covering a galactocentric distance of 5 - 12 kpc. The results are mainly based on an LTE analysis, and we additionally present a full non-LTE, unified model atmosphere analysis of one star (OB78-277) to demonstrate the reliability of the differential LTE technique. A comparison of the stellar oxygen abundance with that of previous nebular results s…
(Abridged) We use high S/N spectra of 20 HII regions in the giant spiral galaxy M101 to derive electron temperatures for the HII regions and robust metal abundances over radii R = 0.19-1.25 Ro (6-41 kpc). We compare the consistency of electron temperatures measured from the [O III]4363, [N II]5755, [S III]6312, and [O II]7325 auroral lines. Temperatures from [O III], [S III], and [N II] are correlated with relative offsets that are consistent with expectations from nebular photoionization models. However, the temperatures derived from the [O II]7325 line show a large scatter and are nearly unc…
The first stellar abundances in M31 are presented, based on Keck I HIRES spectroscopy and model atmospheres analyses of three A-F supergiants, 41-2368, 41-3712, and A-207. We also present the preliminary analysis of a fourth star, 41-3654. We find that the stellar oxygen abundances are in good agreement with those determined from nebular studies, even though the stars do {\it not} show a clear radial gradient in oxygen. The uncertainties in the stellar abundances are smaller than the range in the nebular results, making these stars ideal objects for further studies of the distribution of oxyge…
The errors inherent to the use of the standard "ionization correction factor" ("i_CF") method of calculating nebular conditions and relative abundances of H, He, N, O, Ne, S, and Ar in emission line nebulae have been investigated under conditions typical for planetary nebulae. The photoionization code CLOUDY was used to construct a series of model nebulae with properties spanning the range typical of PNe. Its radial "profiles" of bright, frequently observed optical emission lines were then summed over a variety of "apertures" to generate sets of emission line measurements. These resulting line…
We study whether integrated optical spectroscopy of a disk galaxy can be used to infer the mean, or characteristic gas-phase oxygen abundance in the presence of systematic effects such as spatial abundance variations, contributions to the integrated emission-line spectrum from diffuse-ionized gas, and dust attenuation. Our sample consists of 14 nearby disk galaxies with integrated spectrophotometry, and observations of more than 250 individual HII regions culled from the literature. We consider both theoretical and empirical strong-line abundance calibrations based on the R23=([OII]+[OIII])/H-…
We present follow-up spectra of 39 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) from the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS). Many targets were selected as potentially low metallicity systems based on their absolute B magnitudes and the metallicity-luminosity relation. The spectra, obtained with the Lick 3-m telescope, cover the full optical region from [O II]3726,29 to beyond [S IIl6717,31 and include measurement of [O IIIl4363 in twelve objects. The spectra are presented and tables of the strong line ratios are given. For twelve high signal-to-noise ratio spectra, we determine abundance ratios o…
Refined one- and two-dimensional models for the nebular spectra of the hyper-energetic Type Ic supernova (SN) 1998bw, associated with the gamma-ray burst GRB980425, from 125 to 376 days after B-band maximum are presented. One dimensional, spherically symmetric spectrum synthesis calculations show that reproducing features in the observed spectra, i.e., the sharply peaked [OI] 6300Ådoublet and MgI] 4570Åemission, and the broad [FeII] blend around 5200Å, requires the existence of a high-density O-rich core expanding at low velocities ($\lsim 8,000$ km s$^{-1}$) and of Fe-rich material moving fas…
Despite intense scrutiny, the progenitor system(s) that gives rise to Type Ia supernovae remains unknown. The favored theory invokes a carbon-oxygen white dwarf accreting hydrogen-rich material from a close companion until a thermonuclear runaway ensues that incinerates the white dwarf. However, simulations resulting from this single-degenerate, binary channel demand the presence of low-velocity H-alpha emission in spectra taken during the late nebular phase, since a portion of the companion's envelope becomes entrained in the ejecta. This hydrogen has never been detected, but has only rarely …
The early-time optical spectrum of the Type Ic supernova (SN) 2002ap was characterized by unusually broad features, leading some authors to designate it a "hypernova." We present optical spectropolarimetry of this object 16 and 37 days after the estimated date of explosion. After correcting for interstellar polarization, we find evidence for a high level of intrinsic continuum polarization at both epochs: p >~ 1.3% on day 16 and p >~ 1.0% on day 37. Prominent line polarization is also seen, especially in the trough of the Ca II near-infrared triplet during the second epoch. When interpreted in…
We present 5 - 40 micron spectroscopy of 41 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds, observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra show the presence of a combination of nebular emission lines and solid-state features from dust, superimposed on the thermal IR continuum. By analyzing the 25 LMC and 16 SMC PNe in our sample we found that the IR spectra of 14 LMC and 4 SMC PNe are dominated by nebular emission lines, while the other spectra show solid-state features. We observed that the solid-state features are compatible with carbon-rich dust …
We have derived the oxygen abundance for a sample of nearby galaxies in the Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) which possess at least two independent spectra of one or several HII regions with a detected [OIII]4363 auroral line. Since, for nearby galaxies, the [OII]3727 nebular line is out of the observed wavelength range, we propose a method to derive (O/H)_ff abundances using the classic Te method coupled with the ff relation. (O/H)_7325 abundances have also been determined, based on the [OII]7320,7330 line intensities, and using a small modification of the standard Te met…
We present a new model for computing consistently the line and continuum emission from galaxies, based on a combination of recent population synthesis and photoionization codes. We use effective parameters to describe the HII regions and the diffuse gas ionized by single stellar generations in a galaxy [...]. We calibrate the nebular properties of our model using the observed [OIII]/Hbeta, [OII]/[OIII], [SII]/Halpha, and [NII]/[SII] ratios of a representative sample of nearby spiral and irregular, starburst, and HII galaxies. To compute whole (line plus continuum) spectral energy distributions…
We report results from the third in a series of nebular abundance studies of emission-line galaxies from the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS). Galaxies with coarse metallicity estimates of 12 + log(O/H) less than 8.2 dex were selected for observation. Spectra of 14 galaxies, which cover the full optical region from [OII]3727,3729 to beyond [SII]6717,6731, are presented, and abundance ratios of N, O, Ne, S, and Ar are computed. The auroral [OIII]4363 line is detected in all 14 galaxies. Oxygen abundances determined through the direct electron temperature T_e method confirm that th…
Nebular-phase spectra of SN 2006aj, which was discovered in coincidence with X-ray flash 060218, were obtained with Keck in 2006 July and the Very Large Telescope in 2006 September. At the latter epoch spectropolarimetry was also attempted, yielding an upper limit of ~ 2% for the polarization. The spectra show strong emission lines of [OI] and MgI], as expected from a Type Ic supernova, but weak CaII lines. The [FeII] lines that were strong in the spectra of SN 1998bw are much weaker in SN 2006aj, consistent with the lower luminosity of this SN. The outer velocity of the line-emitting ejecta i…
We measure nebular oxygen abundances for 204 emission-line galaxies with redshifts 0.3<z<1.0 in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N) field using spectra from the Team Keck Redshift Survey (TKRS). We also provide an updated analytic prescription for estimating oxygen abundances using the traditional strong emission line ratio, R_{23}, based on the photoionization models of Kewley & Dopita (2003). We include an analytic formula for very crude metallicity estimates using the [NII]6584/Halpha ratio. Oxygen abundances for GOODS-N galaxies range from 8.2< 12+log(O/H)< 9.1 corr…
Photometric and spectral evolution of the Type Ic supernova SN 2007ru until around 210 days after maximum are presented. The spectra show broad spectral features due to very high expansion velocity, normally seen in hypernovae. The photospheric velocity is higher than other normal Type Ic supernovae. It is lower than SN 1998bw at $\sim$ 8 days after the explosion, but is comparable at later epochs. The light curve evolution of SN 2007ru indicates a fast rise time of 8$\pm$3 days to $B$ band maximum and post-maximum decline more rapid than other broad-line Type Ic supernovae. With an absolute $…
The variation of properties of Type Ia supernovae, the thermonuclear explosions of Chandrasekhar-mass carbon-oxygen white dwarfs, is caused by different nucleosynthetic outcomes of these explosions, which can be traced from the distribution of abundances in the ejecta. The composition stratification of the spectroscopically normal but rapidly declining SN2004eo is studied performing spectrum synthesis of a time-series of spectra obtained before and after maximum, and of one nebular spectrum obtained about eight months later. Early-time spectra indicate that the outer ejecta are dominated by ox…
