We analyze the proper inclusion of electric-field-induced spin splittings in the framework of the envelope function approximation. We argue that the Rashba effect should be included in the form of a macroscopic potential as diagonal terms in a multiband approach rather than the commonly used Rashba term dependent on k and electric field. It is pointed out that the expectation value of the electric field in a subband is sometimes not unique because the expectation values can even have opposite signs for the spin-split subband components. Symmetric quantum wells with Dresselhaus terms and the influence of the interfaces on the spin splitting are also discussed. We apply a well established multiband approach to wide modulation-doped InGaSb quantum wells with strong built-in electric fields in the interface regions. We demonstrate an efficient mechanism for switching on and off the Rashba splitting with an electric field being an order of magnitude smaller than the local built-in field that determines the Rashba splitting. The implications of our findings for spintronic devices, in particular the Datta-Das spin transistor and proposed modifications of it, are discussed.
We report on Cr doping effect in Mn3Sn polycrystalline films with both uniform and modulation doping. It is found that Cr doping with low concentration does not cause notable changes to the structural and magnetic properties of Mn3Sn, but it significantly enhances the anomalous Hall conductivity, particularly for modulation-doped samples at low temperature. A Hall conductivity as high as 184.8 Ω-1 cm-1 is obtained for modulation-doped samples at 50 K, in a sharp contrast to vanishingly small values for undoped samples at the same temperature. We attribute the enhancement to the change of Fermi…
A two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in SrTiO3 is created via modulation doping by interfacing undoped SrTiO3 with a wider-band-gap material, SrTi1-xZrxO3, that is doped n-type with La. All layers are grown using hybrid molecular beam epitaxy. Using magnetoresistance measurements, we show that electrons are transferred into the SrTiO3, and a 2DEG is formed. In particular, Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are shown to depend only on the perpendicular magnetic field. Experimental Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are compared with calculations that assume multiple occupied subbands.
Thanks to their multi-valley, anisotropic, energy band structure, two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) in modulation-doped AlAs quantum wells (QWs) provide a unique platform to investigate electron interaction physics and ballistic transport. Indeed, a plethora of phenomena unseen in other 2DESs have been observed over the past decade. However, a foundation for sample design is still lacking for AlAs 2DESs, limiting the means to achieve optimal quality samples. Here we present a systematic study on the fabrication of modulation-doped AlAs and GaAs QWs over a wide range of AlxGa1-xAs barrie…
We develop a theory for the maximum achievable mobility in modulation-doped 2D GaAs-AlGaAs semiconductor structures by considering the momentum scattering of the 2D carriers by the remote ionized dopants which must invariably be present in order to create the 2D electron gas at the GaAs-AlGaAs interface. The minimal model, assuming first order Born scattering by random quenched remote dopant ions as the only scattering mechanism, gives a mobility much lower (by a factor of 3 or more) than that observed experimentally in many ultra high-mobility modulation-doped 2D systems, establishing convinc…
Considering scattering by unintentional background charged impurities and by charged dopants in the modulation doping layer as well as by GaAs acoustic phonons, we theoretically consider the practical intrinsic (phonons) and extrinsic (background and dopants) limits to carrier mobility in modulation doped AlGaAs-GaAs 2D semiconductor structures. We find that reducing background impurity density to $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$ along with a modulation doping separation of 1000 Åor above will achieve a mobility of $100 \times 10^6$ cm$^2$/Vs at a carrier density of $3\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ for T=1K. At…
We measure the photoluminescence spectra for an array of modulation doped, T-shaped quantum wires as a function of the 1d density n_e which is modulated with a surface gate. We present self-consistent electronic structure calculations for this device which show a bandgap renormalization which, when corrected for excitonic energy and its screening, are largely insensitive to n_e and which are in quantitatively excellent agreement with the data. The calculation (cf. cond-mat/9908349) shows the importance of including orthogonality between the screening electrons and the electron(s) bound to the …
We report on the growth and electrical characterization of modulation-doped Al0.24Ga0.76As/AlxGa1-xAs/Al0.24Ga0.76As quantum wells with mole fractions as low as x=0.00057. Such structures will permit detailed studies of the impact of alloy disorder in the fractional quantum Hall regime. At zero magnetic field, we extract an alloy scattering rate of 24 ns-1 per %Al. Additionally we find that for x as low as 0.00057 in the quantum well, alloy scattering becomes the dominant mobility-limiting scattering mechanism in ultra-high purity two-dimensional electron gases typically used to study the frag…
We report a terahertz optical modulator consisting of randomly stacked trilayer graphene (TLG) deposited on an oxidized silicon substrate by means of THz- Time Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS). Here, the gate tuning of the Fermi level of the TLG provides the fundamental basis for the modulation of THz transmission. We measured a 15% change in the THz transmission of this device over a broad frequency range (0.6-1.6THz). We also observed a strong absorption >80% in the time-domain signals and a frequency independence of the conductivity. Furthermore, unlike previous studies, we find that the under…
We report on a magneto-photoluminescence (PL) study of Mn modulation-doped InAs/InGaAs/InAlAs quantum wells. Two PL lines corresponding to the radiative recombination of photoelectrons with free and bound-on-Mn holes have been observed. In the presence of a magnetic field applied in the Faraday geometry both lines split into two circularly polarized components. While temperature and magnetic field dependences of the splitting are well described by the Brillouin function, providing an evidence for exchange interaction with spin polarized manganese ions, the value of the splitting exceeds the ex…
Modulation-doped heterostructures are a key enabler for realizing high mobility and better scaling properties for high performance transistors. We report the realization of modulation-doped two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at beta(Al0.2Ga0.8)2O3/ Ga2O3 heterojunction using silicon delta doping. The formation of a 2DEG was confirmed using capacitance voltage measurements. A modulation-doped 2DEG channel was used to realize a modulation-doped field-effect transistor. The demonstration of modulation doping in the beta-(Al0.2Ga0.8)2O3/ Ga2O3 material system could enable heterojunction devices f…
The electronic transport properties of graphene-based superlattice structures are investigated. A graphene-based modulation-doped superlattice structure geometry is proposed and consist of periodically arranged alternate layers: InAs/graphene/GaAs/graphene/GaSb. Undoped graphene/GaAs/graphene structure displays relatively high conductance and enhanced mobilities at elevated temperatures unlike modulation-doped superlattice structure more steady and less sensitive to temperature and robust electrical tunable control on the screening length scale. Thermionic current density exhibits enhanced beh…
We study the evolution of the absorption spectrum of a modulation doped GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor quantum well with decreasing the carrier density. We find that there is a critical density which marks the transition from a Fermi edge singularity to a hydrogen-like behavior. At this density both the lineshape and the transitions energies of the excitons change. We study the density dependence of the singularity exponent $α$ and show that disorder plays an important role in determining the energy scale over which it grows.
An experimental study of Raman scattering in N-layer graphene as a function of the top layer doping is reported. At high doping level, achieved by a CHF_3 plasma treatment, we observe a splitting of the $G$ band in the spectra of bilayer and 4-layer graphene (N even), whereas the splitting is not visible in case of monolayer and trilayer graphene (N odd). The different behaviors are related to distinct electron-phonon interactions, which are affected by symmetry breaking and Fermi level position in different ways in the various N-layer graphenes. In trilayer graphene, a weakening of the electr…
We studied the mechanism of half-metallicity (HM) formation in transition metal doped (TM) conjugated carbon based structures by first-principles electronic structure simulations. It is found that the HM is a rather complex phenomenon, determined by the ligand field splitting of d-orbitals of the transition metal (TM) atoms, the exchange splitting and the number of valence electrons. Since most of the conjugated carbon based structures possess ligands with intermediate strength, the ordering of the d-orbital splitting is similar in all structures, and the HM properties evolve according to the …
The electron transport in the two-dimensional gas formed in tensile-strained Si1-xGex/Si/Si1-xGex heterostructures is investigated using Monte Carlo simulation. At first the electron mobility is studied in ungated modulation doped structures. The calculation matches very well the experimental results over a wide range of electron density. The mobility typically varies between 1100 cm2/Vs in highly-doped structures and 2800 cm2/Vs at low electron density. The mobility is shown to be significantly influenced by the thickness of the spacer layer separating the strained Si channel from the pulse-d…
For the first time, we have observed the obvious triple G peak splitting of ABA stacked trilayer graphene. The G peak splitting can be quantatively understood through the different electron-phonon coupling strength of Ea', Eb' and Ea" modes. In addition, the fluctuation of G peak position at different sample locations can also be understood from the view of the varied interaction strength among graphene layers of TLG, which is induced by nonuniform hole doping at the microscopic level.
Quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), which generates dissipation-less edge current without external magnetic field, is observed in magnetic-ion doped topological insulators (TIs), such as Cr- and V-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3. The QAHE emerges when the Fermi level is inside the magnetically induced gap around the original Dirac point of the TI surface state. Although the size of gap is reported to be about 50 meV, the observable temperature of QAHE has been limited below 300 mK. We attempt magnetic-Cr modulation doping into topological insulator (Bi,Sb)2Te3 films to increase the observable temperature …
The modulation of the transmitted (reflected) radiation due to change of interband transitions under variation of carriers concentration by the gate voltage is studied theoretically. The calculations were performed for strongly doped graphene on high-K (Al_2O_3, HfO_2, AlN, and ZrO_2) or SiO_2 substrates under normal propagation of radiation. We have obtained the modulation depth above 10% depending on wavelength, gate voltage (i.e. carriers concentration), and parameters of substrate. The graphene - dielectric substrate - doped Si (as gate) structures can be used as an effective electrooptica…
Gate instability/hysteresis in modulation-doped p-type AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures impedes the development of nanoscale hole devices, which are of interest for topics from quantum computing to novel spin physics. We present an extended study conducted using custom-grown, matched modulation-doped n-type and p-type heterostructures, with/without insulated gates, aimed at understanding the origin of the hysteresis. We show the hysteresis is not due to the inherent `leakiness' of gates on p-type heterostructures, as commonly believed. Instead, hysteresis arises from a combination of GaAs surface-…
We have measured T1 spin lifetimes of a 14 nm modulation-doped (100) GaAs quantum well using a time-resolved pump-probe Kerr rotation technique. The quantum well was selected by tuning the wavelength of the probe laser. T1 lifetimes in excess of 1 microsecond were measured at 1.5 K and 5.5 T, exceeding the typical T2* lifetimes that have been measured in GaAs and II-VI quantum wells by orders of magnitude. We observed effects from nuclear polarization, which were largely removable by simultaneous nuclear magnetic resonance, along with two distinct lifetimes under some conditions that likely re…
Doping a semiconductor quantum dot with just a single impurity atom can completely transform its physical properties. Here, we report and analyze the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of colloidal CdSe quantum dot samples containing on average fewer than one Mn2+ per quantum dot. Even at this sub-single-dopant level, the low-temperature low-field data are dominated by impurity-induced Zeeman splittings caused by dopant-carrier sp-d exchange. Unlike in more heavily doped quantum dots, however, the MCD intensity at the first CdSe exciton shows a field-induced sign flip as the field stren…
Degenerately doped semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) exhibit a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike metals, semiconductor NCs offer tunable LSPR characteristics enabled by doping, or via electrochemical or photochemical charging. Tuning plasmonic properties through carrier density modulation suggests potential applications in smart optoelectronics, catalysis, and sensing. Here, we elucidate fundamental aspects of LSPR modulation through dynamic carrier density tuning in Sn-doped Indium Oxide NCs. Monodisperse Sn-doped Indium Ox…
We show how a proper radial modulation of the composition of core-multi-shell nanowires critically enhances the control of the free-carrier density in the high-mobility core with respect to core-single-shell structures, thus overcoming the technological difficulty of fine tuning the remote doping density. We calculate the electron population of the different nanowire layers as a function of the doping density and of several geometrical parameters by means of a self-consistent Schrödinger-Poisson approach: Free carriers tend to localize in the outer shell and screen the core from the electric f…
Here we investigate the spin-dependent subband structure of newly-developed Mn-based modulation-doped quantum wells. In the presence of an external magnetic field, the s-d exchange coupling between carriers and localized d electrons of the Mn impurities gives rise to large spin splittings resulting in a magnetic-field dependent subband structure. Within the framework of the effective-mass approximation, we self-consistently calculate the subband structure at zero temperature using Density Functional Theory (DFT) with a Local Spin Density Approximation (LSDA). We present results for the magneti…
A quantitative estimation of spin drift velocity in highly doped n-type silicon (Si) at 8 K is presented in this letter. A local two-terminal Hanle measurement enables the detection of a modulation of spin signals from the Si as a function of an external electric field, and this modulation is analyzed by using a spin drift-diffusion equation and an analytical solution of the Hanle-type spin precession. The analyses reveal that the spin drift velocity is linearly proportional to the electric field. The contribution of the spin drift effect to the spin signals is crosschecked by introducing a mo…
We report on a systematic investigation of the dominant scattering mechanism in shallow two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) formed in modulation-doped GaAs/Al_{x}Ga_{1-x}As heterostructures. The power-law exponent of the electron mobility versus density, mu \propto n^{alpha}, is extracted as a function of the 2DEG's depth. When shallower than 130 nm from the surface, the power-law exponent of the 2DEG, as well as the mobility, drops from alpha \simeq 1.65 (130 nm deep) to alpha \simeq 1.3 (60 nm deep). Our results for shallow 2DEGs are consistent with theoretical expectations for scattering…
The role of polariton-electron scattering on the performance characteristics of an electrically injected GaAs-based quantum well microcavity diode in the strong coupling regime has been investigated. An electron gas is introduced in the quantum wells by modulation doping with silicon dopants. It is observed that polariton-electron scattering suppresses the relaxation bottleneck in the lower polariton branch. However, it is not adequate to produce a degenerate coherent condensate at k|| ~ 0 and coherent emission.
Digital Magnetic Heterostructures (DMH) are semiconductor structures with magnetic monolayers. Here we study electronic and magneto-transport properties of shallow modulation-doped (ZnSe/ZnCdSe) DMHs with spin-5/2 Mn impurities. We compare the "reservoir" model, possibly relevant to shallow geometries, to the usual "constant-density" model. Our results are obtained by solving the Kohn-Sham equations within the Local Spin Density Approximation (LSDA). In the presence of a magnetic field, we show that both models exhibit characteristic behaviors for the electronic structure, two-dimensional carr…
In-plane magnetic field photoluminescence spectra from a series of GaAs/AlGaAs coupled double quantum wells show distinctive doublet structures related to the symmetric and antisymmetric states. The magnetic field behavior of the upper transition from the antisymmetric state strongly depends on sample mobility. In lower mobility samples, the transition energy shows an $\cal N$-type kink with fields (namely a maximum followed by a minimum), whereas higher mobility samples have a linear dependence. The former is due to a homogeneous broadening of electron and hole states and the results are in g…
We demonstrate ultra-sharp (${\lesssim}\,10\text{ nm}$) lateral $p\text{-}n$ junctions in graphene using electronic transport, scanning tunneling microscopy, and first principles calculations. The $p\text{-}n$ junction lies at the boundary between differentially-doped regions of a graphene sheet, where one side is intrinsic and the other is charge-doped by proximity to a flake of $α$-RuCl$_3$ across a thin insulating barrier. We extract the $p\text{-}n$ junction contribution to the device resistance to place bounds on the junction width. We achieve an ultra-sharp junction when the boundary bet…
Unusual quantum phenomena usually emerge upon doping Mott insulators. Using a combinatorial molecular beam epitaxy system integrated with cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy, we investigate the electronic structure of a modulation-doped Mott insulator Sn/Si(111)-($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)-R30$^\textrm{o}$. In underdoped regions, we observe a universal pseudogap opening around the Fermi level, which changes little with the applied magnetic field and the occurrence of Sn vacancies. The pseudogap gets smeared out at elevated temperatures and alters in size with the spatial confinement of the…
We investigate theoretically the electron spin states in disk-shaped HgTe topological insulator quantum dots (TIQDs) containing a single magnetic $Mn^{2+}$ ion. We show that the energy spectrum and the electron density distribution of the topological edge states in HgTe TIQD can be modulated significantly by the position of the magnetic $Mn^{2+}$ ion. The numerical results further demonstrate that the electric fields not only tune the spin splittings of edge states via the $\emph{sp-d}$ exchange interaction between the electron (hole) and the magnetic $Mn^{2+}$ ion but also give rise to the br…
The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of modulation-doped GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells (MDQW) and heterojunctions (HJ) is studied under a magnetic field ($B_{\|}$) applied parallel to the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) layer. The effect of $B_{\|}$ strongly depends on the electron-hole separation ($d_{eh}$), and we revealed remarkable $B_{\|}$-induced modifications of the PL spectra in both types of heterostructures. A model considering the direct optical transitions between the conduction and valence subband that are shifted in k-space under $B_{\|}$, accounts qualitatively for the observed s…
We present a systematic study of various ways (top gates, local doping, substrate bias) to fabricate and tune multi-dot structures in silicon nanowire multigate MOSFETs (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors). The carrier concentration profile of the silicon nanowire is a key parameter to control the formation of tunnel barriers and single-electron islands. It is determined both by the doping profile of the nanowire and by the voltages applied to the top gates and to the substrate. Local doping is achieved with the realisation of up to two arsenic implantation steps in combination…
Electron spin transport and dynamics are investigated in a single, high-mobility, modulation-doped, GaAs quantum well using ultrafast two-color Kerr-rotation micro-spectroscopy, supported by qualitative kinetic theory simulations of spin diffusion and transport. Evolution of the spins is governed by the Dresselhaus bulk and Rashba structural inversion asymmetries, which manifest as an effective magnetic field that can be extracted directly from the experimental coherent spin precession. A spin precession length L-SOI is defined as one complete precession in the effective magnetic field. It is …
The dependences of the transport scattering time τt, quantum lifetime τq, and their ratio τt/τq on the density ne of the electron gas in modulation-doped single GaAs quantum wells with AlAs/GaAs short-period super-lattice barriers are investigated. The experimental dependences are explained in terms of electron scattering by remote ionized donors with an effective two-dimensional concentration n*R and background impurities with a three-dimensional concentration nB. An expression for n*R(ne) is obtained including the contribution of X-valley electrons localized in AlAs layers to the suppression…
We report on n-type degenerate doping in MOVPE grown \b{eta}-(Al0.26Ga0.74)2O3 epitaxial thin films and modulation doping in \b{eta}-(Al0.26Ga0.74)2O3/\b{eta}-Ga2O3 heterostructure. Alloy composition is confirmed using HRXRD measurements. Carrier concentration in the thin films is proportional to the silane molar flow. Room temperature hall measurements showed a high carrier concentration of 6x1018-7.3x1019 cm-3 with a corresponding electron mobility of 53-27 cm2/V.s in uniformly-doped \b{eta}-(Al0.26Ga0.74)2O3 layers. Modulation doping is used to realize a total electron sheet charge of 2.3x1…
We propose a ferromagnetic/ferroelectric hybrid double quantum well structure, and present an investigation of the Curie temperature (Tc) modulation in this quantum structure. The combined effects of applied electric fields and spontaneous electric polarization are considered for a system that consists of a Mn δ-doped well, a barrier, and a p-type ferroelectric well. We calculate the change in the envelope functions of carriers at the lowest energy sub-band, resulting from applied electric fields and switching the dipole polarization. By reversing the depolarizing field, we can achieve two dif…
We report on transport characteristics of field effect two-dimensional electron gases (2DEG) in surface indium antimonide quantum wells. The topmost 5 nm of the 30 nm wide quantum well is doped and shown to promote the formation of reliable, low resistance Ohmic contacts to surface InSb 2DEGs. High quality single-subband magnetotransport with clear quantized integer quantum Hall plateaus are observed to filling factor $ν=1$ in magnetic fields of up to $B=18$ T. We show that the electron density is gate-tunable, reproducible, and stable from pinch-off to 4$\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$, and peak mo…
We present a unified approach for calculating the properties of shallow donors inside or outside heterostructure quantum wells. The method allows us to obtain not only the binding energies of all localized states of any symmetry, but also the energy width of the resonant states which may appear when a localized state becomes degenerate with the continuous quantum well subbands. The approach is non-variational, and we are therefore also able to evaluate the wave functions. This is used to calculate the optical absorption spectrum, which is strongly non-isotropic due to the selection rules. The …
We study spin polarization in a split-gate quantum wire focussing on the effect of a realistic smooth potential due to remote donors. Electron interaction and spin effects are included within the density functional theory in the local spin density approximation. We find that depending on the electron density, the spin polarization exhibits qualitatively different features. For the case of relatively high electron density, when the Fermi energy $E_{F}$ exceeds a characteristic strength of a long-range impurity potential $V_{donors}$, the density spin polarization inside the wire is practically …
We perform self-consistent Schrödinger-Poisson calculations with exchange and correlation corrections to determine the electron/hole gas in a radial hetero-junction formed in a modulation doped GaAs/AlGaAs core-multi-shell nanowire (CSNW) which is n-/p-doped. Realistic composition and geometry are mapped on an symmetry compliant two-dimensional grid, and the inversion/accumulation layers are obtained assuming mid-gap Fermi energy pinning at the surface. We show that the electron and hole gases can be tuned to different localizations and symmetries inside the core as a function of the doping le…
We have studied a 50/50Åsuperlattice of GaAs/Al$_{0.21}$Ga$_{0.79}$As composition, modulation-doped with Si, to produce $n=1.4\times 10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ electrons per superlattice period. The modulation-doping was tailored to avoid the formation of Tamm states, and photoluminescence due to interband transitions from extended superlattice states was detected. By studying the effects of a quantizing magnetic field on the superlattice photoluminescence, the miniband energy width, the reduced effective mass of the electron-hole pair, and the band gap renormalization could be deduced.
We study 95 split gates of different size on a single chip using a multiplexing technique. Each split gate defines a one-dimensional channel on a modulation-doped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure, through which the conductance is quantized. The yield of devices showing good quantization decreases rapidly as the length of the split gates increases. However, for the subset of devices showing good quantization, there is no correlation between the electrostatic length of the one dimensional channel (estimated using a saddle point model), and the gate length. The variation in electrostatic length and th…
The optical spin orientation effect in a GaAs/(Ga,Al)As quantum well containing a high-mobility 2D electron gas was found to be due to spin-polarized minority carriers, the holes. The observed oscillations of both the intensity and polarization of the photoluminescence in a magnetic field are well described in a model whose main elements are resonant absorption of the exciting light by the Landau levels and mixing of the heavy- and light-hole subbands. After subtraction of these effects, the observed influence of magnetic fields on the spin polarization can be well interpreted by a standard ap…
In proximity to an s-wave superconductor, a one- or two-dimensional, electron- or hole-doped semiconductor with a sizable spin-orbit coupling and a Zeeman splitting can support a topological superconducting (TS) state. The semiconductor TS state has Majorana fermions as localized zero-energy excitations at order parameter defects such as vortices and sample edges. Here we examine the effects of quenched disorder from the semiconductor surface on the stability of the TS state in both electron- and hole-doped semiconductors. By considering the interplay of broken time reversal symmetry (due to Z…
The reproducible operation of quantum electronic devices is a key requirement for future quantum information processing and spintronics applications. Traditionally quantum devices have been fabricated from modulation doped heterostructures, where there is an intrinsic lack of reproducibility due to the random potential from ionized donors. Here we show that we can greatly improve reproducibility over modulation doped devices by using a completely undoped architecture, with superior uniformity in the confinement potential and more consistent operating voltages for both electron and hole devices…
We show how the trigonal warping effect in doped graphene can be used to produce fully valley polarized currents. We propose a device that acts both as a beam splitter and a collimator of these electronic currents. The result is demonstrated trough an optical analogy using two dimensional photonic crystals.
Motivated by Resonant X-ray scattering experiments in cuprate ladder materials showing charge order modulation of period $λ=3$ and 5 at specific hole densities, we investigate models involving the electronic t-J ladders and bosonic chains coupled via screened Coulomb repulsion. Extensive density matrix renormalization group calculations applied to the ladders/chains supplemented by a self-consistent mean-field treatment of the inter-ladder/chain coupling provide quantitative estimates of the charge order for $λ=3,4$ and 5. As previously proposed, such patterns correspond to the emergence of pa…
In spin-polarized itinerant electron systems, collective spin-wave modes arise from dynamical exchange and correlation (xc) effects. We here consider spin waves in doped paramagnetic graphene with adjustable Zeeman-type band splitting. The spin waves are described using time-dependent spin-density-functional response theory, treating dynamical xc effects within the Slater and Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjolander approximations. We obtain spin-wave dispersions and spin stiffnesses as a function of doping and spin polarization, and discuss prospects for their experimental observation.
We report on the observation of spin dependent optically dressed states and optical Stark effect on an individual Mn spin in a semiconductor quantum dot. The vacuum-to-exciton or the exciton-to-biexciton transitions in a Mn-doped quantum dot are optically dressed by a strong laser field and the resulting spectral signature is measured in photoluminescence. We demonstrate that the energy of any spin state of a Mn atom can be independently tuned using the optical Stark effect induced by a control laser. High resolution spectroscopy reveals a power, polarization and detuning dependent Autler-Town…
We address the inhibition of tunnelling in polariton condensates confined in a potential landscape created by a honeycomb array of microcavity pillars in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting in the external magnetic field. The coupling rate between the microcavity pillars can be strongly impacted even by weak out-of-phase temporal modulations of the depths of the corresponding potential wells. When such a modulation is implemented in truncated honeycomb arrays that realize a polariton topological insulator, which supports unidirectional edge states in the presence of spin-o…
