We study the generation of magnetic fields during preheating within an scenario of hybrid inflation at the electroweak (EW) scale. We find that the non-perturbative and strongly out-of-equilibrium process of magnetic field production occurs along the lines predicted by Vachaspati many years ago. The system starts in the false vacuum at the end of inflation, and very quickly the initial quantum fluctuations of the Higgs field get amplified via long wavelength spinodal instabilities. The subsequent nucleation of the random Gaussian Higgs field bubbles (lumps) leads to EW symmetry breaking, and to the creation of $Z$-strings, which soon decay, along with longwave magnetic flux tubes with nontrivial helicity. The intensity and scales in these helical magnetic fields are consistent with their later development into the microgauss fields observed in galaxies and clusters of galaxies.
We consider a scenario in which the baryon asymmetry was created in the early universe during a cold electroweak transition. The spinodal instability of the Higgs field caused by a rapid change of sign of its effective mass-squared parameter induces tachyonic preheating. We study the development of Chern-Simons number in this transition by numerical lattice simulations of the SU(2)-Higgs model with an added effective CP-violating term. A net asymmetry is produced, and we study its dependence on the size of CP violation and the ratio of Higgs to W mass.
Recently Garcia Bellido et. al. have proposed that electroweak baryogenesis may occur at the end of inflation, in a scenario where the reheat temperature is too low for electroweak symmetry restoration. I show why the scenario is difficult to test reliably by classical field techniques on the lattice.
We consider the out-of-equilibrium (quasi-) particle number distributions of the Higgs and W-fields during electroweak tachyonic preheating. We model this process by a fast quench, and perform classical real-time lattice simulations in the SU(2)-Higgs model in three dimensions. We discuss how to define particle numbers and effective energies using two-point functions in Coulomb and unitary gauge, and consider some of the associated problems. After an initial exponential growth in effective particle numbers, the system stabilises, allowing us to extract effective masses, temperatures and chemic…
We study out-of-equilibrium quasi-particle distributions of the Higgs and W fields during the zero-temperature tachyonic electroweak transition that has been assumed in recent scenarios of baryogenesis. Approximating the process by a fast quench, we perform classical real-time lattice simulations in the SU(2)-Higgs model. The emerging quasi-particle numbers and energies are then used to determine the effective temperatures, chemical potentials and masses of the particles shortly after the transition.
We explore viable scenarios for parametric resonant amplification of electroweak (EW) gauge fields and Chern-Simons number during preheating, leading to baryogenesis at the electroweak (EW) scale. In this class of scenarios time-dependent classical EW gauge fields, essentially spatially-homogeneous on the horizon scales, carry Chern-Simons number which can be amplified by parametric resonance up to magnitudes at which unsuppressed topological transitions in the Higgs sector become possible. Baryon number non-conservation associated with the gauge sector and the highly non-equilibrium nature of…
We refine the implementation of ensemble fermions for the electroweak sector of the Standard Model, introduced previously. We consider the behavior of different observables as the size of the ensemble is increased and show that the dynamics converges for ensemble sizes small enough that simulations of the entire electroweak sector become numerically tractable. We apply the method to the computation of the effective preheating temperature during a fast electroweak transition, relevant for Cold Electroweak Baryogenesis. We find that this temperature is never below 20 GeV, and this in combination…
We analyze the generation of helical magnetic fields during preheating in a model of low-scale electroweak (EW) hybrid inflation. We show how the inhomogeneities in the Higgs field, resulting from tachyonic preheating after inflation, seed the magnetic fields in a way analogous to that predicted by Vachaspati and Cornwall in the context of the EW symmetry breaking. At this stage, the helical nature of the generated magnetic fields is linked to the non-trivial winding of the Higgs-field. We analyze non-perturbatively the evolution of these helical seeds through the highly non-linear stages of s…
We consider the creation of non-zero Chern-Simons number in a model of the early Universe, where the Higgs field experiences a fast quench at the end of inflation and subsequently rolls down its potential barrier. Neglecting the expansion, we perform numerical lattice simulations in the Abelian Higgs model in 1+1 dimensions with an added phenomenological C and P violating term during this stage of so-called tachyonic preheating. The results suggest that even the sign of the Chern-Simons and thus baryon number is dependent on the ratio of the Higgs to W mass. We also discuss the appropriate cho…
Two recent scenarios of preheating-related baryogenesis are compared within the framework of Abelian Higgs model in (1+1) dimensions. It is shown that they shift baryon number in opposite directions. Once both scenarios can realize simultaneously as overlapped stages of the same physical process, even the sign of net generated asymmetry becomes dependent on initial parameters.
It has recently been suggested that the baryon washout problem of standard electroweak baryogenesis could be avoided if inflation ends at a low enough energy density and a parametric resonance transfers its energy repidly into the standard model fields. We present preliminary results of numerical simulations in a SU(2)xU(1) gauge-Higgs model in which this process was studied.
The origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry remains one of the most fundamental problems of cosmology. In this talk I present a novel scenario for baryogenesis at the electroweak scale, without the need for a first order phase transition. It is based on the out of equilibrium resonant production of long wavelength Higgs and gauge configurations, at the end of a period of inflation, which induces a large rate of sphaleron transitions, before thermalization at a temperature below critical.
In many inflationary models, a large amount of energy is transferred rapidly to the long-wavelength matter fields during a period of preheating after inflation. We study how this changes the dynamics of the electroweak phase transition if inflation ends at the electroweak scale. We simulate a classical SU(2)xU(1)+Higgs model with initial conditions in which the energy is concentrated in the long-wavelength Higgs modes. With a suitable initial energy density, the electroweak symmetry is restored non-thermally but broken again when the fields thermalize. During this symmetry restoration, baryon …
We present a novel scenario for baryogenesis in a hybrid inflation model at the electroweak scale, in which the Standard Model Higgs field triggers the end of inflation. One of the conditions for successful baryogenesis, the departure from thermal equilibrium, is naturally achieved at the stage of preheating after inflation. The inflaton oscillations induce large occupation numbers for long-wavelength configurations of Higgs and gauge fields, which leads to a large rate of sphaleron transitions. We estimate this rate during the first stages of reheating and evaluate the amount of baryons produ…
If the dark sector contains 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles and a small enough dark gauge coupling, dark monopoles could be a macroscopic dark matter candidate. Its Higgs-portal coupling to the Standard Model can modify the electroweak vacuum in the monopole interior. In the most striking cases, dark monopoles could even contain electroweak-symmetric cores and generate multi-hit signals at large-volume detectors. If they are produced via parametric resonance in the early Universe, monopoles with radii up to one micron and masses up to ten kilotonnes could account for all of dark matter.
Using lattice techniques we investigate the generation of long range cosmological magnetic fields during a cold electroweak transition. We will show how magnetic fields arise, during bubble collisions, in the form of magnetic strings. We conjecture that these magnetic strings originate from the alignment of magnetic dipoles associated with EW sphaleron-like configurations. We also discuss the early thermalisation of photons and the turbulent behaviour of the scalar fields after tachyonic preheating.
Our electroweak vacuum may be metastable in light of the current experimental data of the Higgs/top quark mass. If this is really the case, high-scale inflation models require a stabilization mechanism of our vacuum during inflation. A possible candidate is the Higgs-inflaton/-curvature coupling because it induces an additional mass term to the Higgs during the slow roll regime. However, after the inflation, the additional mass term oscillates, and it can potentially destabilize our electroweak vacuum via production of large Higgs fluctuations during the inflaton oscillation era. In this paper…
At the end of inflation, the coherent oscillations of the inflaton field may resonantly amplify the long wavelength modes of both bosons and fermions coupled to it. We study the resonant production of both kinds of particles during preheating in a model of hybrid inflation. The coherent time evolution of the inflaton and the Higgs fields after inflation induce a very different production of fermions depending on whether they are coupled to the Higgs or to the inflaton. For reasonable values of the model parameters, the fermion production through parametric resonance can be very efficient. We s…
During the preheating process at the end of inflation the amplification of field fluctuations can lead to the amplification of curvature perturbations. If the curvature perturbations on small scales are sufficiently large, primordial black holes (PBHs) will be overproduced. In this paper we study PBH production in the two-field preheating model with quadratic inflaton potential. We show that for many values of the inflaton mass m, and coupling g, small scale perturbations will be amplified sufficiently, before backreaction can shut off preheating, so that PBHs will be overproduced during the s…
We present a complete computation of the inflaton decay into very massive fermions during preheating. We show that heavy fermions are produced very efficiently up to masses of order 10^{17}-10^{18} GeV; the accessible mass range is thus even broader than the one for heavy bosons. We apply our findings to the leptogenesis scenario, proposing a new version of it, in which the massive right-handed neutrinos, responsible for the generation of the baryon asymmetry, are produced during preheating. We also discuss other production mechanisms of right-handed neutrinos in the early Universe, identifyin…
We examine the particle production via preheating at the end of inflation in supersymmetric theories. The inflaton and matter scalars are now necessarily complex fields, and their relevant interactions are restricted by holomorphy. In general this leads to major changes both in the inflaton dynamics and in the efficiency of the preheating process. In addition, supersymmetric models generically contain multiple isolated vacua, raising the possibility of non-thermal production of dangerous topological defects. Because of these effects, the success of leptogenesis or WIMPZILLA production via preh…
Current measurements of Standard Model parameters suggest that the electroweak vacuum is metastable. This metastability has important cosmological implications, because large fluctuations in the Higgs field could trigger vacuum decay in the early universe. For the false vacuum to survive, interactions which stabilize the Higgs during inflation -- e.g., inflaton-Higgs interactions or non-minimal couplings to gravity -- are typically necessary. However, the post-inflationary preheating dynamics of these same interactions could also trigger vacuum decay, thereby recreating the problem we sought t…
We perform a fully non-linear calculation of the production of supermassive Grand Unified Theory (GUT) $X$ bosons during preheating, taking into account the fact that they are unstable with a decay width $Γ_X$. We show that parametric resonance does not develop if $Γ_X$ is larger than about $10^{-2} m_X$. We compute the nonthermal number density of superheavy bosons produced in the preheating phase and demonstrate that the observed baryon asymmetry may be explained by GUT baryogenesis after preheating if $Γ_X$ is smaller than about $10^{-3} m_X$.
We show by studying the Abelian Higgs model with numerical lattice simulations that non-thermal phase transitions arising out of preheating after inflation are possible in gauge-Higgs models under rather general circumstances. This may lead to the formation of gauged topological defects and, if the scale at which inflation ends is low enough, to electroweak baryogenesis after preheating.
We study the production of gravitinos during the preheating era after inflation by means of the non-perturbative Bogolyubov technique. Considering only the helicity $\pm 3/2$ states, the problem is reduced to the simpler Dirac fermions case. We calculate the production in a particular supergravity model in an expanding universe and obtain the spectrum and number density. Finally we compare the results with the nucleosynthesis bounds and extract some consequences.
We discuss the production of inflatino the superpartner of the inflaton due to vacuum fluctuations during preheating and argue that they do decay alongwith the inflaton to produce a thermal bath. Therefore they do not survive until nucleosynthsis to pose a threat to it.
We study preheating in a general class of supersymmetric hybrid inflation model. Supersymmetry leads to only one coupling constant in the potential and thus only one natural frequency of oscillation for the homogeneous fields, whose classical evolution consequently differs from that of a general (non-supersymmetric) hybrid model. We emphasise the importance of mixing effects in these models which can significantly change the rate of production of particles. We perform a general study of the rate of production of the particles associated with the homogeneous fields, and show how preheating is e…
We discuss toy models where supersymmetry is broken due to non-vanishing time-varying vacuum expectation value of the inflaton field during preheating. We discuss the production of inflatino the superpartner of inflaton due to vacuum fluctuations and then we argue that they do not survive until nucleosynthesis and decay along with the inflaton to produce a thermal bath after preheating. Thus the only relevant remnant is the helicity \pm 3/2 gravitinos which can genuinely cause problem to nucleosynthesis.
Small evaporating black holes were proposed to be dangerous inducing fast decay of the electroweak false vacuum. We observe that the flat-spectrum matter perturbations growing at the post-inflationary matter dominated stage can produce such black holes in a tiny amount which may nevertheless be sufficient to destroy the vacuum in the visible part of the Universe via the induced process. If the decay probability in the vicinity of Planck-mass black holes was of order one as suggested in literature, the absence of such objects in the early Universe would put severe constraints on inflation and s…
We study a simple model of a massive inflaton field $ϕ$ coupled to another scalar filed $χ$ with interaction term $g^2ϕ^2χ^2$. We use the theory developed by Kofman {\em et al.} (Phys. Rev. D {\bf 56} (1997) 3258 [arXiv:hep-ph/9704452])for the first stage of preheating to give a full description of the dynamics of the $χ$ field modes, including the behaviour of the phase, in terms of the iteration of a simple family of circle maps. The parameters of this family of maps are a function of time when expansion of the universe is taken into account. With this more detailed description, we obtain a …
We present a new technique for the calculation of helicity $\pm 1/2$ gravitino production during preheating. It is based on the equivalence between goldstinos and helicity $\pm 1/2$ gravitinos at high energies. The problem is thus reduced to the standard (Majorana) fermion production after inflation. Comparison with the results obtained in the unitary gauge is also presented.
We look at the possibility of non-perturbative particle production after inflation from SUSY flat directions produced by rotating eigenstates thereby avoiding the standard adiabaticity conditions. This might lead to preheating and prevent the delay of thermalisation of the universe. We investigate the flat directions $LLE^c$ and $U^cD^cD^c$ and find no particle production. These 2 directions are very important, since they have been named as possible candidates for being the inflaton. We investigate $QLQLQLE^c$ and find particle production and therefore the possibility of preheating. We investi…
We present fully non-linear simulations of a self-interacting scalar field in the early universe undergoing tachyonic preheating. We find that density perturbations on sub-horizon scales which are amplified by tachyonic instability maintain long range correlations even during the succeeding parametric resonance, in contrast to the standard models of preheating dominated by parametric resonance. As a result the final spectrum exhibits memory and is not universal in shape. We find that throughout the subsequent era of parametric resonance the equation of state of the universe is almost dust-like…
We review our results on the calculation of helicity 1/2 gravitino production during preheating. The method we present is based on the equivalence between goldstinos and longitudinal gravitinos at high energies. The problem is thus reduced to the standard (Majorana) fermion production after inflation. Comparison between helicity 3/2 and 1/2 production and with the results obtained in the unitary gauge is also presented.
We perform a numerical study of the preheating mechanism of particle production in models of quintessential inflation and compare it with the usual gravitational production mechanism. We find that even for a very small coupling between the inflaton field and a massless scalar field, g > 10^{-9}, preheating dominates over gravitational particle production. Reheating temperatures in the range 10^{-2} GeV < T_{rh} < 10^{15} GeV can be easily obtained.
We study gravitational creation of light fermions in the presence of classical scalar metric perturbations about a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre- Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. These perturbations can be large during preheating, breaking the conformal flatness of the background spacetime. We compute numerically the total number of particles generated by the modes of the metric perturbations which have grown sufficiently to become classical. In the absence of inhomogeneities massless fermions are not gravitationally produced, and then this effect may be relevant for abundance estimates of light …
We investigate non-perturbative production of fermionic dark matter in the early universe. We study analytically the gravitational production mechanism accompanied by the coupling of fermions to the background inflaton field. The latter leads to the variation of effective fermion mass during preheating and makes the resulting spectrum and abundance sensitive to its parameters. Assuming fast preheating that completes in less than the inflationary Hubble time and no oscillations of the inflaton field after inflation, we find an abundant production of particles with energies ranging from the infl…
The nonlinear time evolution of the quantum fields is studied in the O(N) model for large N in a radiation dominated FRW universe, with a view towards the phenomenon of explosive particle production due to either spinodal instabilities or parametric amplification, i.e. preheating. Quantum backreaction effects due to the produced particles are included consistently within the large N approximation. We find that preheating persists when the expansion is included, although the amount of particle production is reduced compared to the values found in Minkowski space. We also see that the behavior o…
Leptogenesis constitues a very simple scenario to achieve the baryon asymmetry that we observe today. It requires only the presence of right handed neutrinos (which arise very naturally in many extensions of the Standard Model) and depends crucially on the mechanism responsible for their production. In particular, when their mass exceeds the inflaton mass (10^13 GeV in chaotic inflation) only non perturbative production can occur. It is shown here that non perturbative production of fermions in an expanding Universe is a very efficient mechanism up to masses of order of (10^17 - 10^18) GeV, an…
We discuss the adiabatic basis dependence of particle number in time-dependent backgrounds. In particular, we focus on preheating after inflation, and show that, for the optimal basis, the time dependence of the produced particle number can be well approximated by a simple connection formula, which can be obtained by analysing Stokes phenomenon in given backgrounds. As we show explicitly, the simple connection formula can describe various parameter regions such as narrow and broad resonance regime in a unified manner.
Many models of supersymmetry breaking, in the context of either supergravity or superstring theories, predict the presence of particles with Planck-suppressed couplings and masses around the weak scale. These particles are generically called moduli. The excessive production of moduli in the early Universe jeopardizes the successful predictions of nucleosynthesis. In this paper we show that the efficient generation of these dangerous relics is an unescapable consequence of a wide variety of inflationary models which have a preheating stage. Moduli are generated as coherent states in a novel way…
We study preheating in plateau inflation in the Palatini formulation of general relativity, in a special case that resembles Higgs inflation. It was previously shown that the oscillating inflaton field returns to the plateau repeatedly in this model, and this leads to tachyonic production of inflaton particles. We show that a minimally coupled spectator scalar field can be produced even more efficiently by a similar mechanism. The mechanism is purely gravitational, and the scalar field mass can be of order $10^{13}$ GeV, larger than the Hubble scale by many orders of magnitude, making this a c…
In this paper we investigate the role of additional light fields not directly coupled to the background during preheating. We extend our previous study that proved that the production of particles associated with such fields can be abundant due to quantum corrections, even for the massless states. We also obtain the expression for the occupation number operator in terms of interacting fields which includes the non-linear effects important for non-perturbative particle production. We show that adding too many light degrees of freedom without direct interactions with the background might attenua…
We investigate a resonant particle production of a scalar field $χ$ coupled non-minimally to a spacetime curvature $R$ ($ξR χ^2$) as well as to an inflaton field $ϕ$ ($g^2ϕ^2χ^2$). In the case of $g < 3 \times 10^{-4}$, $ξ$ effect assists $g$-resonance in certain parameter regimes. However, for $g > 3 \times 10^{-4}$, $g$-resonance is not enhanced by $ξ$ effect because of $ξ$ suppression effect as well as a back reaction effect. If $ξ\approx -4$, the maximal fluctuation of produced $χ$-particle is $\sqrt{< χ^2 >}_{max} \approx 2 \times 10^{17}$ GeV for $g < 1 \times 10^{-5}$, which is larger t…
In traditional models only an order one fraction of energy is transferred from the inflaton to radiation through nonperturbative resonance production in preheating immediately after inflation, due to backreaction effects. We propose a particle production mechanism that could improve the depletion of the inflaton energy density by up to four orders of magnitude. The improvement comes from the fast perturbative decays of resonantly produced daughter particles. They act as a "spillway" to drain these daughter particles, reducing their backreaction on the inflaton and keeping the resonant producti…
We propose a new alternative for baryogenesis which resolves a number of the problems associated with GUT and electroweak scenarios, and which may allow baryogenesis even in modest extensions of the standard model. If the universe never reheats above the electroweak scale following inflation, GUT baryon production does not occur and at the same time thermal sphalerons, gravitinos and monopoles are not produced in abundance. Nevertheless, non-thermal production of sphaleron configurations via preheating could generate the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe.
In this talk recent developments of the theory of preheating after inflation are briefly reviewed. In inflationary cosmology, the particles constituting the Universe are created after inflation due to their interaction with moving inflaton field(s) in the process of reheating. In inflationary models motivated by supergravity, both bosons and fermions are created. In the bosonic sector, the leading channel of particle production is the non-perturbative regime of parametric resonance dominated by those bosons which are created exponentially fast with the largest characteristic exponent. In the f…
We perform an extensive analysis of linear fluctuations during preheating in Higgs inflation in the Einstein frame, where the fields are minimally coupled to gravity, but the field-space metric is nontrivial. The self-resonance of the Higgs and the Higgsed gauge bosons are governed by effective masses that scale differently with the nonminimal couplings and evolve differently in time. Coupled metric perturbations enhance Higgs self-resonance and make it possible for Higgs inflation to preheat solely through this channel. For $ξ\gtrsim 100$ the total energy of the Higgs-inflaton condensate can …
Preheating after inflation may over-produce primordial black holes (PBH's) in many regions of parameter space. As an example we study two-field models with a massless self-interacting inflaton, taking into account second order field and metric backreaction effects as spatial averages. We find that a complex quilt of parameter regions above the Gaussian PBH over-production threshold emerges due to the enhancement of curvature perturbations on all scales. It should be possible to constrain realistic models of inflation through PBH over-production although many issues, such as rescattering and no…
We derive quantum Boltzmann equations for preheating by means of the density matrix formalism, which account for both the non-adiabatic particle production and the leading collisional processes between the produced particles. In so doing, we illustrate the pivotal role played by pair correlations in mediating the particle production. In addition, by numerically solving the relevant system of Boltzmann equations, we demonstrate that collisional processes lead to a suppression of the growth of the number density even at the very early stages of preheating.
We consider dark matter production during the inflaton oscillation epoch. It is conceivable that renormalizable interactions between dark matter and inflaton may be negligible. In this case, the leading role is played by higher dimensional operators generated by gravity and thus suppressed by the Planck scale. We focus on dim-6 operators and study the corresponding particle production in perturbative and non-perturbative regimes. We find that the dark matter production rate is dominated by non-derivative operators involving higher powers of the inflaton field. Even if they appear with small Wi…
Recent progress in the preheating phenomena for inflationary cosmology is reviewed. We first discuss estimates of the preheating time scale and particle production at the early stages of parametric amplification within the Mathieu and Lam'e approximations and we analyze their precision and limitations. The necessity of self-consistent calculations including the non-linearity of the field theory equations in an energy conserving scheme is stressed. The large N calculations including the field back-reaction are reviewed. For spontaneously broken theories the issue of symmetry restoration is anal…
Motivated by a recent discussion about the role of flat directions, a typical feature of supersymmetric models, in the process of particle production in the early universe a consistent model of inflation and preheating in supergravity with MSSM fields has been built. It is based on a model proposed by M. Kawasaki, M. Yamaguchi and T. Yanagida. In the inflationary stage, the flat directions acquire large vacuum expectation values (VEVs) without spoiling the background of slow-roll, high-scale inflation consistent with the latest WMAP5 observational data. In the stage of particle production, nat…
Cold electroweak baryogenesis was proposed as a scenario to bypass generic problems of electroweak baryogenesis within the Standard Model. In this scenario, baryogenesis takes place during an electroweak symmetry breaking transition, which is also responsible for preheating after inflation. In the simplest modelling of the scenario, only two parameters remain undetermined: The Higgs mass and the strength of CP violation. Using full real-time lattice simulations, we compute the dependence of the asymmetry on these parameters.
Reheating after inflation can occur through inflaton decay or efficient parametric resonant production of particles from the oscillation of the inflaton. If the particles produced interact with scalars that were light during inflation, then significant super-horizon density perturbations are generated during this era. These perturbations can be highly non-Gaussian.
We study the onset of symmetry breaking after hybrid inflation in a model having the field content of the SU(2) gauge-scalar sector of the standard model, coupled to a singlet inflaton. This process is studied in (3+1)-dimensions in a fully non-perturbative way with the help of lattice techniques within the classical approximation. We focus on the role played by gauge fields and, in particular, on the generation of Chern-Simons number. Our results are shown to be insensitive to the various cut-offs introduced in our numerical approach. The spectra preserves a large hierarchy between long and s…

In inflationary cosmology, the particles constituting the Universe are created after inflation due to their interaction with moving inflaton field(s) in the process of preheating. In the fermionic sector, the leading channel is out-of equilibrium particle production in the non-perturbative regime of parametric excitation, which respects Pauli blocking but differs significantly from the perturbative expectation. We develop theory of fermionic preheating coupling to the inflaton, without and with expansion of the universe, for light and massive fermions, to calculate analytically the occupation …
