A field superposition of singular beams incident on, and then reflected from a mirror has been investigated. It was demonstrated that the standing optical wave, which contains a vortex, possesses an orbital angle momentum where the energy flux circulates only in the azimuth direction of the beam. We show in this paper that the standing light wave containing the optical vortex transfers angular momentum to a substance located in the field of the vortex without moving the substance in the azimuth or radial directions. This property of the standing vortex present an opportunity to form the three-dimensional optical traps, gasdynamic and hydrodynamic vortices, in a localised volume by a direct transfer of the orbital angular momentum from the optical vortex.
We show that a high-order Bessel beam propagating in a medium with nonlinear absorption is not completely absorbed, but survives in the form of a new propagation invariant vortex beam in which the beam energy and orbital angular momentum are permanently transferred to matter and at the same time refueled by spiral inward currents of energy and angular momentum. Unlike vortex solitons and dissipative vortex solitons, these vortex beams are not supported by specific dispersive nonlinearities (self-focusing or self-defocusing) and do not require gain. Propagation invariance in presence of multipl…
We have theoretically predicted the gigantic spikes of the orbital angular momentum caused by the conversion processes of the centered optical vortex in the circularly polarized components of the elliptic vortex beam propagating perpendicular to the crystal optical axis. We have experimentally observed the conversion process inside the subwave deviations of the crystal length. We have found that the total orbital angular momentum of the wave beam is conserved.
The magnitude of the topological charge of the vortex of a ring-shaped pulse is found to be limited by the squared mean frequency of the pulse spectrum at the ring relative to its variance. This limitation implies a upper bound to the orbital angular momentum carried by a pulse, and a lower bound to the duration for a pulse to carry any orbital angular momentum.
We experimentally study the behavior of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light in a noncollinear second harmonic generation (SHG) process. The experiment is performed by using a type I BBO crystal under phase matching conditions with femtosecond pumping fields at 830 nm. Two specular off-axis vortex beams carrying fractional orbital angular momentum at the fundamental frequency (FF) are used. We analyze the behavior of the OAM of the SH signal when the optical vortex of each input field at the FF is displaced from the beam's axis. We obtain different spatial configurations of the SH field, al…
An electromagnetic surface wave carrying orbital angular momentum (AM) is called plasmonic vortex that also carries spin AM originating from evanescent field. In this study, spin and orbital AM of plasmonic vortex in a terahertz cylindrical corrugated waveguide (CCW) are analyzed. We report the extrinsic spin AM of the plasmonic vortex for the first time. The extrinsic spin AM is produced by the rotation of the polarization of the plasmonic vortex whose rotation axis is positioned at the vicinity of the CCW wall. The extrinsic spin AM depends on the intrinsic orbital AM and radius of CCW. The …
Light intensity control of the orbital angular momentum of the fundamental beam in a quadratic nonlinear process is theoretically and numerically presented. In particular we analyzed a seeded second harmonic generation process in presence of orbital angular momentum of the interacting beams due both to on axis and off axis optical vortices. Examples are proposed and discussed.

We measure the far-field intensity of vortex beams going through nanoholes. The process is analyzed in terms of helicity and total angular momentum. It is seen that the total angular momentum is preserved in the process, and helicity is not. We compute the ratio between the two transmitted helicity components, $γ_{m,p}$. We observe that this ratio is highly dependent on the helicity ($p$) and the angular momentum ($m$) of the incident vortex beam in consideration. Due to the mirror symmetry of the nanoholes, we are able to relate the transmission properties of vortex beams with a certain helic…
We identify a class of modal solutions for spatio-temporal optical vortex (STOV) electromagnetic pulses propagating in dispersive media with orbital angular momentum (OAM) orthogonal to propagation. We find that symmetric STOVs in vacuum can carry half-integer intrinsic orbital angular momentum (OAM); for general asymmetric STOVs in a dispersive medium, the OAM is quantized in integer multiples of a parameter that depends on the STOV symmetry and the group velocity dispersion. Our results suggest that STOVs propagating in dispersive media are accompanied by a polariton-like quasiparticle. The …

We theoretically and experimentally investigated transformations of vortex beams subjected to sector perturbations in the form of hard-edged aperture. The transformations of the vortex spectra, the orbital angular momentum, and the informational entropy of the perturbed beam were studied. We found that relatively small angular sector perturbations have almost no effect on OAM, although the informational entropy is rapidly increasing due to the birth of new optical vortices caused by diffraction by diaphragm edges. At large perturbation angles, the uncertainty principle between the angle and OA…
We consider optical properties of Hypergeometric-Gaussian beam compositions with spiral-like intensity and phase distributions that were called the spiroid beams. Their orbital angular momentum as a function of a fractional-order topological charge has a chain of supper-pulses (bursts and dips). The form of the supper-pulses can be controlled by the spiral parameters. Such a phenomenon can be used in optical switches and triggers for optical devices and communication systems.
Orbital angular momentum of light is a core feature in photonics. Its confinement to surfaces using plasmonics has unlocked many phenomena and potential applications. Here we introduce the reflection from structural boundaries as a new degree of freedom to generate and control plasmonic orbital angular momentum. We experimentally demonstrate plasmonic vortex cavities, generating a succession of vortex pulses with increasing topological charge as a function of time. We track the spatio-temporal dynamics of these angularly decelerating plasmon pulse train within the cavities for over 300 femtose…
In our Letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 125, 013903 (2020)), we reported topological vortex lasers based on spin-momentum-locked edge modes. We observed that the near field spin and orbital angular momentum has a one-to-one far-field radiation correspondence of circular polarization and orbital angular momentum respectively. Sun et al. in their Comment (arXiv:2009.04700v1), however, argued that we did not perform numerical simulations on the near field information of our experimentally studied topological edge modes, and our mode assignment was mistaken and spoiled the one-to-one correspondence. …
We report the use of an electrostatic MEMS-based device to produce high quality electron vortex beams with more than 1000 quanta of orbital angular momentum (OAM). Diffraction and off-axis electron holography experiments are used to show that the diameter of the vortex in the diffraction plane increases linearly with OAM, thereby allowing the angular momentum content of the vortex to be calibrated. The realization of electron vortex beams with even larger values of OAM is currently limited by the breakdown voltage of the device. Potential solutions to overcome this problem are discussed.
Terahertz vortex beams with different superposition of the orbital angular momentum $l={\pm}1$, ${\pm}2$, ${\pm}3$, and ${\pm}4$ and spin angular momentum $σ={\pm}1$ were used to study antiferromagnetic (AFM) resonances in TbFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ and Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ single crystals. In both materials we observed a strong vortex beam dichroism for the AFM resonances that are split in external magnetic field. The magnitude of the vortex dichroism is comparable to that for conventional circular dichroism due to $σ$. The selection rules at the AFM resonances are governed by the total angular momentum o…
We report on the generation of flower (wheel) modes, which manifest coupled orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes, from a vortex pumped optical parametric oscillator simply by employing a pump source with a short temporal coherence time. This vortex oscillator was also developed to generate a further higher-order vortex signal output with $l_s=2-4$ by replacement of the pump source with a longer coherence time. The signal and idler outputs were tuned within wavelength ranges of 745-955 nm and 1200-1855 nm, respectively. The maximum signal output energy of 1.2 mJ was measured with an optical eff…
We show that a slab of meta-material (with $ε=μ=-1+iΔ$) possesses a vortex-like surface wave with no ability to transport energy, whose nature is completely different from a localized mode or a standing wave. Through computations based on a rigorous time-dependent Green's function approach, we demonstrate that such a mode inevitably generates characteristic image oscillations in two dimensional focusing with even a monochromatic source, which were observed in many numerical simulations, but such oscillations are weak in three dimensional focusing.
A general orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode selection principle is put forward involving the rotationally symmetric superposition of chiral states. This principle is not only capable of explaining the operation of spiral zone plate holograms and suggesting that naturally occurring rotationally symmetric patterns could be inadvertent sources of vortex beams, but more importantly, it enables the systematic and flexible generation of structured OAM waves in general. This is demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically in the context of electron vortex beams using rotationally symmetric bi…
Today, it is well known that light possesses a linear momentum which is along the propagation direction. Besides, scientists also discovered that light can possess an angular momentum (AM), a spin angular momentum (SAM) associated with circular polarization and an orbital angular momentum (OAM) owing to the azimuthally dependent phase. Even though such angular momenta are longitudinal in general, a SAM transverse to the propagation has opened up a variety of key applications [1]. In contrast, investigations of the transverse OAM are quite rare due to its complex nature. Here we demonstrate a s…
We present a comment on "Spin-Momentum-Locked Edge Mode for Topological Vortex Lasing, Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 125, 013903 (2020)"(hereafter the Letter). In the Letter, Yang et al. reported on an elegant topological vortex laser and proposed that the near-field spin and OAM of the topological edge mode lasing have a one-to-one far-field radiation correspondence. The near-field information is based on frequency dispersions of the topological edge modes, without supporting measurements and/or computer simulations. Unfortunately, their frequency dispersions shown in Fig. 1(c) (see also Fig. S6 and E…
In recent years, optical vortex beams possessing orbital angular momentum have caught much attention due to their potential for high capacity optical communications. This capability arises from the unbounded topological charges of orbital angular momentum (OAM) that provides infinite freedoms for encoding information. The two most common approaches for generating vortex beams are through fork diffraction gratings and spiral phase plates. While realization of conventional spiral phase plate requires complicated 3D fabrication, the emerging field of metasurfaces has provided a planar and facile …
Recently, spatiotemporal optical vortex pulses carrying a purely transverse intrinsic orbital angular momentum were generated experimentally [{\it Optica} {\bf 6}, 1547 (2019); {\it Nat. Photon.} {\bf 14}, 350 (2020)]. However, an accurate theoretical analysis of such states and their angular-momentum properties remains elusive. Here we provide such analysis, including scalar and vector spatiotemporal Bessel-type solutions as well as descrption of their propagational, polarization, and angular-momentum properties. Most importantly, we calculate both local densities and integral values of the s…
We present a space-time generalization of the known spatial (monochromatic) wave vortex beams carrying intrinsic orbital angular momentum (OAM) along the propagation direction. Generic spatio-temporal vortex beams are polychromatic and can carry intrinsic OAM at an arbitrary angle to the mean momentum. Applying either (i) a transverse wave-vector shift or (ii) a Lorentz boost to a monochromatic Bessel beam, we construct a family of either (i) time-diffracting or (ii) non-diffracting spatio-temporal Bessel beams, which are exact solutions of the Klein-Gordon wave equations. The proposed spatio-…
Dynamic generation of obitial angular momentum (OAM) of light has enabled complex manipulation of micro-particles, high-dimension quantum entanglement and optical communication. We report an analog vortex transmitter made of one bilaterally symmetric grating and an aperture, emitting optical vortices with the average OAM value continuously variant in the entire rational range. Benefiting from linearly-varying transverse dislocation along its axis of symmetry, this diffractive transmitter possesses extra degree of freedom in engineering broadband optical vortices meanwhile preserving a novel sp…
An optical vortex (OV) is a beam with spiral wave front and screw phase dislocation. This kind of beams is attracting rising interest in various fields. Here we theoretically proposed and experimentally realized a novel but easy approach to generate optical vortices. We leverage the inherent topological vortex structures of polarization around bound states in the continuum (BIC) in the momentum space of two dimensional periodic structures, e.g. photonic crystal slabs, to induce Pancharatnam-Berry phases to the beams. This new class of OV generators operates in the momentum space, meaning that …
Perfect (optical) vortices (PVs) have the mooted ability to encode orbital angular momentum (OAM) onto the field within a well-defined annular ring. Although this makes the near-field radial profile independent of OAM, the far-field radial profile nevertheless scales with OAM, forming a Bessel structure. A consequence of this is that quantitative measurement of PVs by modal decomposition has been thought to be unviable. Here, we show that the OAM content of a PV can be measured quantitatively, including superpositions of OAM within one perfect vortex. We outline the theory and confirm it by ex…
We experimentally generate cylindrically polarized wavepackets with transverse orbital angular momentum, demonstrating the coexistence of spatiotemporal optical vortex with spatial polarization singularity. The results in this paper extend the study of spatiotemporal wavepackets to a broader scope, paving the way for its applications in various areas such as light-matter interaction, optical tweezers, spatiotemporal spin-orbit angular momentum coupling, etc.
Understanding the near-field electromagnetic interactions that produce optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) is central to the integration of twisted light into nanotechnology. Here, we examine the cathodoluminescence (CL) of plasmonic vortices carrying OAM generated in spiral nanostructures through scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The nanospiral geometry defines the photonic local density of states (LDOS) sampled by STEM-CL, which provides access to the phase and amplitude of the plasmonic vortex with nanometer spatial and meV spectral resolution. We map the full spectral di…
Motivated by the recent discovery of electron vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (AM), we construct exact Bessel-beam solutions of the Dirac equation. They describe relativistic and nonparaxial corrections to the scalar electron beams. We describe the spin and orbital AM of the electron with Berry-phase corrections and predict the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in free space. This can be observed as a spin-dependent probability distribution of the focused electron vortex beams. Moreover, the magnetic moment is calculated, which shows different $g$-factors for spin and orbital AM and…
The function to measure orbital angular momentum (OAM) distribution of vortex light is essential for OAM applications. Although there are lots of works to measure OAM modes, it is difficult to measure the power distribution of different OAM modes quantitatively and instantaneously, let alone measure the phase distribution among them. In this work, we demonstrate an OAM complex spectrum analyzer, which enables to measure the power and phase distribution of OAM modes simultaneously by employing rotational Doppler Effect. The original OAM mode distribution is mapped to electrical spectrum of beat…
We for the first time report the truncated diffraction with a triangular aperture of the SU(2) geometric modes and propose a method to detect the complicated orbital angular momentum (OAM) of an SU(2) wave-packet, to the best of our knowledge. As a special vortex beam, a nonplanar SU(2) mode carrying special intensity and OAM distributions brings exotic patterns in truncated diffraction lattice. A meshy structure is unveiled therein by adjusting the illuminated aperture in vicinity of the partial OAM regions, which can be elaborately used to evaluate the partial topological charge and OAM of a…
Engineering of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light due to interaction with photonic lattices reveals rich physics and motivates potential applications. We report the experimental creation of regularly-distributed quantized vortex arrays in momentum space by probing the honeycomb and hexagonal photonic lattices with a single focused Gaussian beam. For the honeycomb lattice, the vortices are associated with Dirac points and mimic the Berry curvature sources. However, we show that the resulting spatial patterns of vortices are strongly defined by the symmetry of the wave packet evolving i…
We study here fractional orbital angular momentum (OAM) states in electron vortex beams (EVB) from the perspective of geometric phase. We have considered the skyrmionic model of an electron, where it is depicted as a scalar electron orbiting around the vortex line, which gives rise to the spin degrees of freedom. The geometric phase acquired by the scalar electron orbiting around the vortex line induces the spin-orbit interaction, which leads to the fractional OAM states with non-quantized monopole charge associated with the corresponding geometric phase. This involves tilted vortex in EVBs. T…
We presented a new method for measuring the squares of the amplitudes and phases of partial vortex-beams in a complex beam array in real time. The method is based on measuring the high-order intensity moments and analyzing the solutions of a system of linear equations. Calibration measurements have shown that the measurement error at least for an array of 10-15 beams does not exceed 4%. It has theoretically and experimentally been shown that the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of combined singular beams depends essentially on the fractional topological charge p. For integer values of the topolo…
A new physical mechanism to achieve spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion based on the interaction of an intense circularly polarized (CP) laser beam with a plane foil is presented and studied for the first time. It has been verified by both simulation and theoretical analysis that vortex harmonics carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are generated after a relativistic CP laser beam, even a Gaussian beam, impinges normally on a plane foil. The generation of this vortex harmonics is attributed to the vortex oscillation of the plasma surface driven harmonically by the vortex longitudina…
In this paper, we present a systematic study of beam shifts and angular momenta of paraxial vortex beams at air-left-handed material (LHM) interfaces. It is shown that, compared to their counterparts at air-right-handed material (RHM) interfaces, the spatial Goos-Hänchen (GH) and Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shifts remains the same, while the angular GH and IF shifts are reversed, at air-LHM interfaces. The spatial and angular shifts of paraxial vortex beams have their respective origins in transverse angular momenta and transverse linear momenta. The spatial GH and IF shifts remain unreversed as a res…
We analyse the Anderson-Higgs mechanism of photon mass acquisition in a plasma and study the contribution to the mass from the orbital angular momentum acquired by a beam of photons when it crosses a spatially structured charge distribution. To this end we apply Proca-Maxwell equations in a static plasma with a particular spatial distribution of free charges, notably a plasma vortex, that is able to impose orbital angular momentum (OAM) onto light. In addition to the mass acquisition of the conventional Anderson-Higgs mechanism, we find that the photon acquires an additional mass from the OAM …
Vortex beams are stable solutions of Maxwell's equations that carry phase singularities and orbital angular momentum, unique properties that give rise to many applications in the basic sciences, optical communications, and quantum technologies. Scalable integration and fabrication of vortex beam emitters will allow these applications to flourish and enable new applications not possible with traditional optics. Here we present a general framework to generate integrated vortex beam emitters using photonic inverse design. We experimentally demonstrate generation of vortex beams with angular momen…
We report on controlling the bi-photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) eigenmodes in the spontaneous parametric down conversion process by simply adjusting the asymmetry of the pump vortex beam. Adjusting the optic axis of the spiral phase plate (SPP) of phase winding corresponding to OAM mode, l, with respect to the beam propagation axis, we have transformed a Gaussian beam into an asymmetric vortex beam with OAM modes, l, l-1, l-2, 0 with different weightages. Pumping the nonlinear crystal with such asymmetric vortices and controlling their asymmetry we have tailored the spiral spectrum of th…
A novel method to generate and manipulate vector vortex beams in an integrated, ring resonator based geometry is proposed. We show numerically that a ring resonator, with an appropriate grating, addressed by a vertically displaced access waveguide emits a complex optical field. The emitted beam possesses a specific polarization topology, and consequently a transverse intensity profile and orbital angular momentum. We propose a combination of several concentric ring resonators, addressed with different bus guides, to generate arbitrary orbital angular momentum qudit states, which could potentia…
We demonstrate the excitation, using a structured light beam carrying orbital angular momentum, of the center of mass motion of a single atom in the transverse direction to the beam's propagation. This interaction is achieved with a vortex beam carrying one unit of orbital angular momentum and one unit of spin/polarization angular momentum. Using a singly charged $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion, cooled near the ground state of motion in the 3D harmonic potential of a Paul trap, we probe the narrow S$_{1/2}$ to D$_{5/2}$ transition near $729\,\mathrm{nm}$ on its motional sidebands to quantify the momentum tr…
Surface plasmon polaritons carrying orbital angular momentum are of great fundamental and applied interest. However, common approaches for their generation are restricted to having a weak dependence on the properties of the plasmon-generating illumination, providing a limited degree of control over the amount of delivered orbital angular momentum. Here we experimentally show that by tailoring local and global geometries of vortex generators, a change in circular polarization handedness of light imposes arbitrary large switching in the delivered plasmonic angular momentum. Using time-resolved p…
We report the first demonstration of a direct interaction between the extraordinary transverse spin angular momentum in evanescent waves and the intrinsic orbital angular momentum in optical vortex beams. By tapping the evanescent wave of whispering gallery modes in a micro-ring-based optical vortex emitter and engineering the transverse spin state carried therein, a transverse-spin-to-orbital conversion of angular momentum is predicted in the emitted vortex beams. Numerical and experimental investigations are presented for the proof-of-principle demonstration of this unconventional interplay …
Measuring the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of vortex beams, including the magnitude and the sign, has great application prospects due to its theoretically unbounded and orthogonal modes. Here, the sign-distinguishable OAM measurement in optomechanics is proposed, which is achieved by monitoring the shift of the transmission spectrum of the probe field in a double Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) rotational-cavity system. Compared with the traditional single LG rotational cavity, an asymmetric optomechanically induced transparency window can occur in our system. Meanwhile, the position of the resonance…
Motivated by recent progress in the generation of optical spatiotemporal vortex pulses (STVPs), there is a theoretical discussion about the transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by such pulses. Two recent works [K. Y. Bliokh, Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 243601 (2021)] and [S. W. Hancock et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 193901 (2021)] claimed the OAM values which differ by a factor of 2 for circular STVPs. Here we resolve this controversy by showing that the result by Hancock et al. is correct for the total OAM, while the result by Bliokh describes the suitably defined intrinsic part of the …
