The aim of this note is to address the low energy limit of quantum field theories with a minimal length scale. The essential feature of these models is that the minimal length acts as a regulator in the asymptotic high energy limit which is incorporated through an infinite series of higher order derivatives. If one investigates a perturbative expansion in inverse powers of the Planck mass, one generically obtains extra poles in the propagator, and instabilities connected with the higher order derivative Lagrangian, that are however artifacts of truncating the series.
In these notes I briefly outline SL(2) degenerate conformal field theories and their application to some related models, namely 2d gravity and N=2 discrete superconformal series.
The q-deformation of the Lie algebras underlying the standard field theories leads to a pair of dual algebras. We describe a simple choice of possible field theories based on these derived algebras. One of these approximates the standard Lie theory of point particles, while the other is proposed as a field theory of knotted solitons.
We comment on a recent puzzle regarding renormalization group invariance of exact results in SUSY theories, and argue that a purported renormalization of the dynamical scale Λdoes not in fact occur.
In these lecture notes, I review the ``linear sigma model" approach to (0,2) string vacua. My aim is to provide the reader with a toolkit for studying a very broad class of (0,2) superconformal field theories with the requisite properties to be candidate string vacua. These lectures were delivered at the 1994 Trieste Summer School.
An alternative version of Hamiltonian formalism for higher-derivative theories is presented. It is related to the standard Ostrogradski approach by a canonical transformation. The advantage of the approach presented is that the Lagrangian is nonsingular and the Legendre transformation is performed in a straightforward way.
A new class of twistor string theories were recently constructed by Abou-Zeid, Hull and Mason. The most interesting one of these theories has the particle content of N=8 supergravity. Arguments are given for the vanishing of the (+ - -)-helicity amplitude for gravitons which suggest that this theory describes a chiral N=8 supergravity rather than Einstein supergravity.
We suggest that orbifold field theories which are obtained from non-commutative N=4 SYM are UV finite. In particular, non-supersymmetric orbifold truncations might be finite even at finite values of Nc.
We review and develop the construction of crosscap states associated with parity symmetries in rational conformal field theories. A general method to construct crosscap states in abelian orbifold models is presented. It is then applied to rational U(1) and parafermion systems, where in addition we study the geometrical interpretation of the corresponding parities.
p-form gauge theories with Stueckelberg coupling are quantized in an irreducible antifield-BRST way. As a consequence, neither the ghosts of ghosts nor their antifields appear. Some irreducible gauge conditions are inferred naturally within our formalism. In the end we briefly discuss the interacting case.
We refine a previous proposal for obtaining the multi-instanton partition function from the supersymmetric index of the 1d supersymmetric gauge theory on the worldline of D0-branes. We provide examples where the refinements are crucial for obtaining the correct result.
The three dimensional N=2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory coupled to matter fields, possibly deformed by a superpotential, give rise to a large class of exactly conformal theories with Lagrangian descriptions. These theories can be arbitrarily weakly coupled, and hence can be studied perturbatively. We study the theories in the large N limit, and compute the two-loop anomalous dimension of certain long operators. Our result suggests that various N=2 U(N) Chern-Simons theories coupled to suitable matter fields are dual to open or closed string theories in AdS4, which are not yet constructed.
We study the new ``gauge'' theories in 5+1 dimensions, and their non-commutative generalizations. We argue that the $θ$-term and the non-commutative torus parameters appear on an equal footing in the non-critical string theories which define the gauge theories. The use of these theories as a Matrix description of M-theory on $T^5$, as well as a closely related realization as 5-branes in type IIB string theory, proves useful in studying some of their properties.
An intriguing connection, based on duality symmetry, between ordinary (commutative) Born-Infeld type theory and non-commutative Maxwell type theory, is pointed out. Both discrete as well as continuous duality transformations are considered and their implications for self duality condition and Legendre transformations are analysed.
In this note we discuss local gauge-invariant operators in noncommutative gauge theories. Inspired by the connection of these theories with the Matrix model, we give a simple construction of a complete set of gauge-invariant operators. We make connection with the recent discussions of candidate operators which are dual to closed strings modes. We also discuss large Wilson loops which in the limit of vanishing noncommutativity, reduce to the closed Wilson loops of the ordinary gauge theory.
We show that a solution of the type IIB supergravity representing D3-branes in the presence of a 2-form background has 16 supersymmetries by explicitly constructing the transformation parameter of unbroken supersymmetry. This solution is dual to a noncommutative Yang-Mills theory in a certain limit.
We investigate consistency conditions for supersymmetric gauge theories in higher dimensions. First, we give a survey of Seiberg's necessary conditions for the existence of such theories with simple groups in five and six dimensions. We then make some comments on how theories in different dimensions are related. In particular, we discuss how the Landau pole can be avoided in theories that are not asymptotically free in four dimensions, and the mixing of tensor and vector multiplets in dimensional reduction from six dimensions.
We study the N=1* supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge groups Sp(2n) and SO(2n+1). These theories are obtained from the corresponding N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories via a mass deformation. We show that the number of quantum vacua in the Sp(2n) theory is equal to the number of quantum vacua in the SO(2n+1) theory. This constitutes non-trivial support for S-duality between these theories. The verification of the equality of the number of quantum vacua involves a rather esoteric identity due to Ramanujan.
We survey the various field theories with 16 real supercharges. The most widely known theory in this class is the N=4 theory in four dimensions. The moduli space of vacua of these theories are described and the physics at the singularities of the moduli spaces are studied.
Vector spaces of (framed) BPS states of Lagrangian four-dimensional N=2 field theories can be defined in semiclassical chambers in terms of the $L^2$-cohomology of Dirac-like operators on monopole moduli spaces. This was spelled out previously for theories with only vectormultiplets, taking into account only a subset of the possible half-supersymmetric 't Hooft-Wilson line defects. This note completes the discussion by describing the modifications needed when including matter hypermultiplets together with arbitrary 't Hooft-Wilson line defects. Two applications of this extended discussion are …
In this note we describe how N=1 SQCD-like theories with a large number of flavors can be given a dual description in terms of a string background containing a large number of additional D5-branes. The dual geometries account for the backreaction of the additional branes: they depend on the ratio between the number of flavors and colors of the gauge theory. This note is based on hep-th/0602027. We present here also a new set of solutions, which are not included in the original paper.
Based on the structure of the three-dimensional superconformal algebra we show that every irreducible ${\mathcal N}=6$ three-dimensional superconformal theory containes exactly one conserved U(1)-symmetry current in the stress tensor supermultiplet and that superconformal symmetry of every ${\mathcal N}=7$ superconformal theory is in fact enhanced to ${\mathcal N}=8$. Moreover, an irreducible ${\cal N}=8$ superconformal theory does not have any global symmetries. The first observation explains why all known examples of ${\mathcal N}=6$ superconformal theories have a global abelian symmetry.
We extend the formula for partition functions of N=2 superconformal gauge theories on S^3 obtained recently by Kapustin, Willett and Yaakov, to incorporate matter fields with arbitrary R-charge assignments. We use the result to check that the self-mirror property of N=4 SQED with two electron hypermultiplets is preserved under a certain mass deformation which breaks the supersymmetry to N=2.
Mass deformations of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in three spacetime dimensions are considered. The gluons of the theories are made massive by the inclusion of a non-local gauge and Poincare invariant mass term due to Alexanian and Nair, while the matter fields are given standard Gaussian mass-terms. It is shown that the dimensional reduction of such mass deformed gauge theories defined on $R^3$ or $R\times T^2$ produces matrix quantum mechanics with massive spectra. In particular, all known massive matrix quantum mechanical models obtained by the deformations of dimensional reductions o…
We analyze the unitarity of a non-relativistic non-commutative scalar field theory. We show that electric backgrounds spoil unitarity while magnetic ones do not. Furthermore, unlike its relativistic counterparts, unitarity can not be restored (at least at the level of one-to-one scattering amplitude) by adding new states to the theory. This is a signal that the model cannot be embedded in a natural way in string theory.
We construct noncommutative versions of both the minimal and the new minimal supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories. The enveloping-algebra formalism is used to carry out such constructions. The beautiful formulation of the Higgs sector of these noncommutative theories is a consequence of fact that, in the GUTs at hand, the ordinary Higgs fields can be realized as elements of the Clifford algebra Cl10(C). In the noncommutative supersymmetric GUTs we formulate, supersymmetry is linearly realized by the noncommutative fields; but it is not realized by the ordinary fields that define those noncomm…
We review and extend evidence for the validity of a generalized Verlinde formula in particular non-rational conformal field theories. We identify a subset of representations of the chiral algebra in non-rational conformal field theories that give rise to an analogue of the relation between modular S-matrices and fusion coefficients in rational conformal field theories. To that end we review and extend the Cardy-type brane calculations in bosonic and supersymmetric Liouville theory (and its duals) as well as in the hyperbolic three-plane H3+. We analyze the three-point functions of Liouville th…
In this letter, we elaborate on the SL(2,Z) action on three dimensional conformal field theories with U(1) symmetry introduced by Witten, by trying to give an explicit verification of the claim regarding holographic dual of the S operation in AdS/CFT correspondence. A consistency check with the recently proposed prescription on boundary condition of bulk fields when we deform the boundary CFT in a non-standard manner is also discussed.
We study Kramers-Wannier dualities for Wess-Zumino-Witten theories and (super-)minimal models in the Cardy case, i.e. the case with bulk partition function given by charge conjugation. Using the TFT approach to full rational conformal field theories, we classify those dualities that preserve all chiral symmetries. Dualities turn out to exist for small levels only.
We study Virasoro minimal-model 4-point conformal blocks on the sphere and 0-point conformal blocks on the torus (the Virasoro characters), as solutions of Zamolodchikov-type recursion relations. In particular, we study the singularities due to resonances of the dimensions of conformal fields in minimal-model representations, that appear in the intermediate steps of solving the recursion relations, but cancel in the final results.
In this paper we explore basic aspects of nonabelian (0,2) GLSM's in two dimensions for unitary gauge groups, an arena that until recently has largely been unexplored. We begin by discussing general aspects of (0,2) theories, including checks of dynamical supersymmetry breaking, spectators and weak coupling limits, and also build some toy models of (0,2) theories for bundles on Grassmannians, which gives us an opportunity to relate physical anomalies and trace conditions to mathematical properties. We apply these ideas to study (0,2) theories on Pfaffians, applying recent perturbative construc…
The three dimensional Chern-Simons theory on $\rr^2_θ\times \rr$ is studied. Considering the gauge transformations under the group elements which are going to one at infinity, we show that under arbitrary (finite) gauge transformations action changes with an integer multiple of $2π$ {\it if}, the level of noncommutaitive Chern-Simons is {\it quantized}. We also briefly discuss the case of the noncommutaitve torus and some other possible extensions.
An interesting feature of some open superstring models in $D < 10$ is the simultaneous presence, in the spectrum, of gauge fields and of a number of antisymmetric tensor fields. In these cases the Green-Schwarz mechanism can (and does) take a generalized form, resulting from the combined action of all the antisymmetric tensors. These novelties are illustrated referring to some simple rational models in six dimensions, and some of their implications for the low-energy effective field theory are pointed out.
We extend previous work on antifield dependent local BRST cohomology for matter coupled gauge theories of Yang-Mills type to the case of gauge groups that involve free abelian factors. More precisely, we first investigate in a model independent way how the dynamics enters the computation of the cohomology for a general class of Lagrangians in general spacetime dimensions. We then discuss explicit solutions in the case of specific models. Our analysis has implications for the structure of characteristic cohomology and for consistent deformations of the classical models, as well as for divergenc…
We discuss some features of the regular supergravity solution for fractional branes on a deformed conifold, recently found by Klebanov-Strassler, mostly adapting it to a type 0 non-sypersymmetric context. The non-supersymmetric gauge theory is SU(M)*SU(M) with two bi-fundamental Weyl fermions. The tachyon is now stabilized by the RR antisymmetric tensor flux. We briefly discuss the most general non-supersymmetric theory on electric, magnetic and fractional type 0 D3-branes on a conifold. This includes the pure SU(N) theory.
The question of whether BPS invariants are protected in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories is investigated from the point of view of algebraic renormalisation theory. The protected invariants are those whose cohomology type differs from that of the action. It is confirmed that one-half BPS invariants ($F^4$) are indeed protected while the double-trace one-quarter BPS invariant ($d^2F^4$) is not protected at two loops in D=7, but is protected at three loops in D=6 in agreement with recent calculations. Non-BPS invariants, i.e. full superspace integrals, are also shown to be unprotecte…
We study supersymmetric Sp(N) gauge theories with an antisymmetric tensor and degree n+1 tree level superpotential. The generalized Konishi anomaly equations derived in hep-th/0304119 and hep-th/0304138 are used to compute the low energy superpotential of the theory. This is done by imposing a certain integrality condition on the periods of a meromorphic one form. Explicit computations for Sp(2), Sp(4), Sp(6) and Sp(8) with cubic superpotential are done and full agreement with the results of the dynamically generated superpotential approach is found. As a byproduct, we find a very precise map …
Using the construction of D-branes with nonzero $B$ field in the matrix model we give a physical interpretation of the known background independence in gauge theories on a noncommutative space. The background independent variables are identified as the degrees of freedom of the underlying matrix model. This clarifies and extends some recent results about the end point of tachyon condensation in D-branes with a $B$ field. We also explain the freedom in the description which is parametrized by a two form $Φ$ from the points of view of the noncommutative geometry on the worldvolume of the branes,…
The dynamics of a stack of N D-branes is described by U(N) gauge theory of which the central U(1) describes the center of mass motion and the remaining SU(N) describes the internal dynamics. In the non-commutative situation, these two parts are coupled by the *-commutator interaction. We describe here how to identify the correct decoupled U(1) center of mass subsector of U(N) gauge theory for the case of the non-commutative torus. The internal dynamics remainder is not a theory of SU(N) valued fields but has a simple description in momentum space.
We show that Thurston geometries are solutions to a large class of 3D quadratic curvature theories, where New Massive Gravity, which was studied in arXiv:2104.00754, is a special case.
We study the large $N$ limit of partition functions for 5d supersymmetric gauge theories with fundamental matter. Depending on the matter content, we find that the scaling behaviour at the leading order can be either $N^2$ or $N^{\frac{3}{2}}$. The latter scaling reminds one of the 3d theories with M-theory duals and we discuss how to extract this behaviour from the recently proposed 3d theories associated with the compactification of 5d SCFTs on 2d surfaces.
A concise presentation of the PF equations for N=2 Seiberg-Witten theories for the classical groups of rank r with N_f massless hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation is provided. For N_f=0, all r PF equations can be given in a generic form. For certain cases with N_f\neq zero, not all equations are generic. However, in all cases there are at least r-2 generic PF equations. For these cases the classical part of the equations is generic, while the quantum part can be formulated using a method described in a previous paper by the authors, which is well suited to symbolic computer calc…
We discuss the computation of holographic entanglement entropy for interface conformal field theories. The fact that globally well defined Fefferman-Graham coordinates are difficult to construct makes the regularization of the holographic theory challenging. We introduce a simple new cut-off procedure, which we call "double cut-off" regularization. We test the new cut-off procedure by comparing the results for holographic entanglement entropies using other cut-off procedures and find agreement. We also study three dimensional conformal field theories with a two dimensional interface. In that c…
We consider the non-extremal, charged, rotating black hole solution of five dimensional minimal gauged supergravity of Cvetic, Lu and Pope [Phys.Lett. B 598 (2004) 273]. We compute the Ashtekar-Magnon-Das mass and show it agrees with the thermodynamic mass. We find a reducible Killing tensor and integrate the geodesic equation explicitly. We also compute the Euclidean action of the black hole and show it satisfies the quantum statistical relation. Further we present a Smarr relation. We end with a discussion of applications to string theory.
We study a three-dimensional N=3 U(N)_k x U(N)_{-k} Chern-Simons matter theory with flavour, corresponding to the N=6 Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena CSM theory coupled to 2N_f fundamental fields. The dual holographic description is given by the near-horizon geometry of N M2-branes at a particular hypertoric geometry M_8. We explicitly construct the space M_8 and match its isometries to the global symmetries of the field theory. We also discuss the model in the quenched approximation by embedding probe D6-branes in AdS_4 x CP^3.
The higher-spin (HS) algebras so far known can be interpreted as the symmetries of the minimal representation of the isometry algebra. After discussing this connection briefly, we generalize this concept to any classical Lie algebras and consider the corresponding HS algebras. For sp(2N) and so(N), the minimal representations are unique so we get unique HS algebras. For sl(N), the minimal representation has one-parameter family, so does the corresponding HS algebra. The so(N) HS algebra is what underlies the Vasiliev theory while the sl(2) one coincides with the 3D HS algebra hs[lambda]. Final…
We present new circular Wilson loops in three-dimensional N=4 quiver Chern-Simons-matter theory on S^3. At any given node of the quiver, a two-parameter family of operators can be obtained by opportunely deforming the 1/4 BPS Gaiotto-Yin loop. Including then adjacent nodes, the coupling to the bifundamental matter fields allows to enlarge this family and to construct loop operators based on superconnections. We discuss their classification, which depends on both discrete data and continuous parameters subject to an identification. The resulting moduli spaces are conical manifolds, similar to t…
We show that, the lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories proposed by Kaplan, when applied to a (2+1)-dimensional domain wall, produces a (1+1)-dimensional theory at low energy even if gauge anomaly produced by chiral fermions does not cancel. But the corresponding statement is not true in higher dimensions.
We study the thermodynamics and the phase structures of Reissner-Nordstrom and Born-Infeld black holes in AdS space by constructing ``off-shell'' free energies using thermodynamic quantities derived directly from the action. We then use these results to propose ``off-shell'' effective potentials for the respective boundary gauge theories. The saddle points of the potentials describe all the equilibrium phases of the gauge theories.
In this note, we evaluate the Weyl-invariant quadratic curvature tensors for the particular Weyl's gauge field constructed in the $3+1$-dimensional noncompact Weyl-Einstein-Yang-Mills model. We subsequently extend the model to its higher curvature version. Here, we also compute Weyl-invariant extension of topological Gauss-Bonnet term for this specific choice of vector field.
We study the prepotential of N=2 gauge theories using the instanton counting techniques introduced by Nekrasov. For the SO theories without matter we find a closed expression for the full prepotential and its string theory gravitational corrections. For the more subtle case of Sp theories without matter we discuss general features and compute the prepotential up to instanton number three. We also briefly discuss SU theories with matter in the symmetric and antisymmetric representations. We check all our results against the predictions of the corresponding Seiberg-Witten geometries.
We show how any asymptotically flat supersymmetric solution of minimal d=5 supergravity with flat base space can be deformed into another supersymmetric asymptotically-Godel solution and apply this procedure to the recently found supersymmetric black-ring and black-string solutions.
Monopole operators in Chern-Simons theories with charged matter have been studied using the state-operator map in CFTs, as states on $\mathbb{R}\times S^2$ with background magnetic flux on $S^2$. Gauge invariance requires a dressing with matter modes which provides non-zero spin to the monopoles. In this note we propose a description of the monopole operators directly on $\mathbb{R}^3$, as a singular behavior of the gauge and matter fields in the vicinity of the insertion point, with a dressing. We study abelian theories with a charged boson or a charged fermion. We extend the discussion to ab…
Tensor models and tensor field theories admit a $1/N$ expansion and a melonic large $N$ limit which is simpler than the planar limit of random matrices and richer than the large $N$ limit of vector models. They provide examples of analytically tractable but non trivial strongly coupled quantum field theories and lead to a new class of conformal field theories. We present a compact introduction to the topic, covering both some of the classical results in the field, like the details of the $1/N$ expansion, as well as recent developments. These notes are loosely bases on four lectures given at th…
We consider the theory of closed $p$-branes propagating on $(p+1)$-dimensional space-time manifolds. This theory has no local degrees of freedom. Here we study its canonical and BRST structures of the theory. In the case of locally flat backgrounds one can show that the $p$-brane theory is related to another known topological field theory. In the general situation some equivalent actions can also be written for the topological $p$-brane theory.
Using elementary considerations of Lorentz invariance, Bose symmetry and BRST invariance, we argue why the decay of a massive color-octet vector state into a pair of on-shell massless gluons is possible in a non-Abelian SU(N) Yang-Mills theory, we constrain the form of the amplitude of the process and offer a simple understanding of these results in terms of effective-action operators.
