We study nonequilibrium dephasing in an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We demonstrate that the shot noise at the beam splitter of the interferometer generates an ensemble of nonequilibrium electron density configurations and that electron interactions induce configuration-specific phase shifts of an interfering electron. The resulting dephasing exhibits two characteristic features, a lobe pattern in the visibility and phase jumps of $π$, in good agreement with experimental data.
This paper has been retracted. The authors have discovered a possible problem in applications of the dephasing terminal approach to shot noise calculations in interference situations: Eq. (7) correctly re-introduces the anticorrelations between the currents in the two arms, but due to its semiclassical nature probably fails to describe the consequential diminishing of exchange effects at the second beamsplitter.
We present a general analysis of shot noise in an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer, of the type investigated experimentally [Yang Ji et al., Nature 422, 415 (2003)], under the influence of dephasing produced by fluctuations of a classical field. We show how the usual partition noise expression T(1-T) is modified by dephasing, depending on the power spectrum of the environmental fluctuations.
A theoretical non-pertubative treatment is developed to explain the dephasing of electrons in the electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer via interaction with a near-by partitioned electronic channel, which acts as a "which path" detector. The resulting formula reproduces the recant experimental behavior of the MZI interference visibility. By fitting the model to the experimental results, it is shown that the visibility is strongly influenced by merely ~3 detecting electrons, hence it reflects the Non-Gaussian properties behavior of the detector shot-noise.

It was recently suggested that a novel type of phase transition may occur in the visibility of electronic Mach-Zehnder Interferometers. Here, we present experimental evidence for the existence of this transition. The transition is induced by strongly non-Gaussian noise that originates from the strong coupling of a quantum point contact to the interferometer. We present a theoretical study of the influence of dephasing on shot noise in an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In contrast to phenomenological approaches, we employ a microscopic model where dephasing is induced by the fluctuations of a classical potential. This enables us to treat the influence of the environment's fluctuation spectrum on the shot noise. We compare against the results obtained from a simple classical model of incoherent transport, as well as those derived from the phenomenological dephasing terminal approach, arguing that the latter runs into a problem when applied …
We address the recently-observed unexpected behavior of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer that was realized experimentally in a quantum Hall system [1]. We argue that the measured lobe structure in the visibility of oscillations and the phase rigidity result from a strong long-range interaction between two adjacent counter-propagating edge states, which leads to a resonant scattering of plasmons. The visibility and phase shift, which we expressed in terms of the transmission coefficient for plasmons, can be used for the tomography of edge states.
We investigate the visibility of the current and shot-noise correlations of electrical analogs of the optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the Hanbury Brown Twiss interferometer. We investigate the suppression of the visibility of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a two-electron Mach-Zehnder interferometer that leaves the single-electron current unchanged. In the case when the sources emit either spin-polarized or entangled electrons, partial distinguishability of electrons (coming from two different sources) suppresses the visibility. Two-particle entanglement may produce behavior similar to "dephasing" of two-particle interferometry.

We use a Mach-Zehnder quantum Hall interferometer of a novel design to investigate the interference effects at fractional filling factors. Our device brings together the advantages of usual Mach-Zehnder and Fabry-Perot quantum Hall interferometers. It realizes the simplest-for-analysis Mach-Zehnder interference scheme, free from Coulomb blockade effects. We propose a possible setup of testing the Bell's inequality in mesoscopic conductors. The particular implementation uses two coupled electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometers in which electrons are injected into the conductors in the quantum Hall regime. It is shown that the Bell's inequality is violated for an arbitrary coupling strength between the two interferometers.
We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of heat engines based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers. The energy dependence of the transmission amplitudes in such setups arises from a difference in the interferometer arm lengths. Any thermoelectric response is thus of purely quantum mechanical origin. In addition to an experimentally established three-terminal setup, we also consider a two-terminal geometry as well as a four-terminal setup consisting of two interferometers. The influences of long range Coulomb interaction (LRCI) on Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) constructed on quantum Hall edge states is studied employing bosonization method. The interaction of interchannel zero-modes is shown to give rise to a characteristic energy scale which is of the order of the period of experimentally observed lobe pattern of visibility. The nonmonotonic behavior of visibility as found Chalker \textit{et al.} is understood analytically using asymptotic analysis.
We investigate an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer with high visibility in the quantum Hall regime. The superposition of the electrostatic potentials from a quantum point contact (QPC) and the residual disorder potential from doping impurities frequently results in the formation of inadvertent quantum dots (QD) in one arm of the interferometer. This gives rise to resonances in the QPC transmission characteristics. While crossing the QD resonance in energy, the interferometer gains a phase shift of $π$ in the interference pattern.

We investigate the Full Counting Statistics of an electrical Mach-Zehnder interferometer penetrated by an Aharonov-Bohm flux, and in the presence of a classical fluctuating potential. Of interest is the suppression of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the distribution function of the transmitted charge. For a Gaussian fluctuating field we calculate the first three cumulants. Three-dimensional higher-order topological insulators can have topologically protected chiral modes propagating on their hinges. Hinges with two co-propagating chiral modes can serve as a "beam splitter" between hinges with only a single chiral mode. The spatial distribution of the incompressible edge states (IES) is obtained for a geometry which is topologically equivalent to an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer, taking into account the electron-electron interactions within a Hartree type self-consistent model. The magnetic field dependence of these IES is investigated and it is found that an interference pattern may be observed if two IES merge or come very close, near the quantum point contacts. Our calculations demonstrate that, being in a quantized Hall plateau does not guarantee observing the interference behavior.
We study transport through an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer recently devised at the Weizmann Institute. We show that this device can be used to probe statistics of quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Our theoretical proposal is inspired by a remarkable experiment on edge states in the Integer Quantum Hall effect (IQHE). A new type of electron sources has emerged which permits to inject particles in a controllable manner, one at a time, into an electronic circuit. Such single electron sources make it possible to fully exploit the particles' quantum nature. We determine the single-particle coherence length from the decay of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations as a function of the imbalance of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer connected to a single electron source. The single-particle coherence length is of particular importance as it is an intrinsic property of the source in contrast to the dephasing length.

The visibility presents a single side lobe structure shown to result from a gaussian phase averaging whose variance is quadratic with the bias. The operation of the interferometer is based on allowed intra-edge elastic transitions within the same Landau sublevel in the regime of high imbalances between the co-propagating edge states. We study the evolution of a single-electron packet of Lorentzian shape along an edge of the integer quantum Hall regime or in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, considering a capacitive Coulomb interaction and using a bosonization approach. Spin filtering through quantum spin interference is addressed exactly, in two dimensions, in a medium that has both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings and an applied external magnetic field. The problem is addressed from the fully non-Abelian Gauge formulation. We propose an experimentally feasible electronic Mach Zehnder Interferometer and solve for the perfect spin filtering conditions. We investigate a Mach-Zehnder interferometer driven by a time-dependent voltage. Motivated by recent experiments, we focus on a train of Lorentzian voltage pulses which we compare to a sinusoidal and a constant voltage. We discuss the visibilities of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the current and in the noise. For the current, we find a strikingly different behavior in the driven as compared to the static case for voltage pulses containing multiple charges. We propose and study a weak value (WV) protocol in the context of a solid state setup, specifically, an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. This is the first specific proposal to measure both the real and imaginary part (i.e., complete tomography) of a WV. We also analyze the manifestation of many-body physics in the WV to be measured, including finite temperature and shot-noise-like contributions.
Fractionally charged quasiparticles in the quantum Hall state with filling factor $ν=5/2$ are expected to obey non-Abelian statistics. We demonstrate that their statistics can be probed by transport measurements in an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The tunneling current through the interferometer exhibits a characteristic dependence on the magnetic flux and a non-analytic dependence on the tunneling amplitudes which can be controlled by gate voltages.
We show how shot noise in an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the fractional quantum Hall regime probes the charge and statistics of quantum Hall quasiparticles. The dependence of the noise on the magnetic flux through the interferometer allows for a simple way to distinguish Abelian from non-Abelian quasiparticle statistics. In the Abelian case, the Fano factor (in units of the electron charge) is always lower than unity. In the non-Abelian case, the maximal Fano factor as a function of the magnetic flux exceeds one.
We study a single-electron pulse injected into the chiral edge-state of a quantum Hall device and subject to a capacitive Coulomb interaction. We find that the scattered multi-particle state remains unentangled and hence can be created itself by a suitable classical voltage-pulse $V(t)$. The application of the inverse pulse $-V(-t)$ corrects for the shake-up due to the interaction and resurrects the original injected wave packet. We suggest an experiment with an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer where the application of such pulses manifests itself in an improved visibility.
We performed a transport measurement in a ballistic Aharonov-Bohm ring and a Fabry-Perot type interferometer. In both cases we found that the interference signal is reversed at a certain bias voltage and that the visibility decays exponentially as a function of temperature, being in a strong analogy with recent reports on the electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometers. We realize a nanoscale-area Mach-Zehnder interferometer with co-propagating quantum Hall spin-resolved edge states and demonstrate the persistence of gate-controlled quantum interference oscillations, as a function of an applied magnetic field, at relatively large temperatures. Arrays of top-gate magnetic nanofingers are used to induce a resonant charge transfer between the pair of spin-resolved edge states. To account for the pattern of oscillations measured as a function of magnetic field and gate voltage, we have developed a simple theoretical model which satisfactorily reproduces the data.

We report on a new mechanism of giant phase modulation. The phenomenon arises when a dispersed photonic mode (slow light) strongly couples to an excitonic resonance. In such a case, even a small amount of optically injected carriers creates a potential barrier for the propagating exciton-polariton which provokes a considerable phase shift. We evidence this effect by fabricating an exciton-polariton Mach-Zehnder interferometer, modulating the output intensity by constructive or destructive interferences controlled by optical pumping of a micrometric size area. We consider tunneling between two edges of Quantum Hall liquids (QHL) of filling factors $ν_{0,1}=1/(2 m_{0,1}+1)$, with $m_0 \geq m_1\geq 0$, through two point contacts forming Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Quasi-particle description of the interferometer is derived explicitly through the instanton duality transformation of the initial electron model. For $m_{0}+m_{1}+1\equiv m>1$, tunneling of quasiparticles of charge $e/m$ leads to non-trivial $m$-state dynamics of effective flux through the interferometer, which restores the regular ``electron'' periodicity of the current in flux.
