RZ Cassiopeia: Eclipsing Binary with Pulsating Component

We report time-resolved VR-band CCD photometry of the eclipsing binary RZ Cas obtained with 38-cm Cassegrain telescope at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory during July 2004 - October 2005. Obtained lightcurves clearly demonstrates rapid pulsations with the period about 22 minutes. Periodogram analysis of such oscillations also is reported. On the 12, January, 2005 we observed rapid variability with higher amplitude (~0.^m 1) that, perhaps, may be interpreted as high-mass-transfer-rate event and inhomogeneity of accretion stream. Follow-up observations (both, photometric and spectroscopic) of RZ Cas are strictly desirable for more detailed study of such event.

A New Apsidal Motion Determination of the Eclipsing Binary Star V459 Cassiopeiae: A Possible Discrepancy Between the Theory and the Observation

Photometric and spectroscopic observations and analysis of the eccentric eclipsing binary V459 Cassiopeiae (e=0.0244) were performed by Lacy et al. (2004). Observations of minimum light show the presence of apsidal motion. In order to find the observed rate of apsidal motion, I followed the procedure described by Guinan & Maloney (1985). Pulsating components of eclipsing binaries in the ASAS-3 catalog

As a result of the search among about 11 000 stars from the public ASAS-3 database, we report detection of pulsating components in eleven eclipsing binaries. In particular, we have found three classical Algols, MX Pav, IZ Tel, and VY Mic, with $δ$ Sct-type primary components. In six other eclipsing binaries, the short-period variability can also be interpreted in terms of $δ$ Sct-type pulsations, but in these systems both components are probably main-sequence stars. The binary properties of the pulsating subdwarf B eclipsing binary PG 1336-018 (NY Vir)

We present an unbiased orbit solution and mass determination of the components of the eclipsing binary NY Vir as a critical test for the formation scenarios of subdwarf B stars. We obtained high-resolution time series VLT/UVES spectra and high-speed multicolour VLT/ULTRACAM photometric observations of NY Vir, a rapidly pulsating subdwarf B star in a short period eclipsing binary. HD 172189: An eclipsing and spectroscopic binary with a Delta Sct-ttype pulsating component in an open cluster

We present a study based on more than 2500 uvby-measurements collected on HD 172189, a new eclipsing binary system with a Delta Sct-type pulsating component that belongs to the open cluster IC 4756. The great interest of this object lies in that three important characteristics coexist: cluster membership, binarity and pulsation. Its binarity and the Delta Sct-type pulsations of one component were detected in the course of several Stromgren photometric campaigns. On the Question of the Behavior of O-C Residuals of the Active Algol-Like Binary RZ Cassiopeiae

We present an analysis of the RZ Cassiopeia O-C diagram for a 30-year period, based on data published by the AAVSO. The new parabolic light-elements are determined and P-dot was estimated. This enabled us to establish the value of M-dot, the rate of the mass transfer between components of this eclipsing binary. Deviations from the parabola in the RZ Cas O-C diagram have a wavelike trend. The pulsation of the primary component influences the scatter of O-C points, as well as it influences the shape of the eclipse. Some physical points on such O-C behavior are presented.

Identifying modes in a pulsating sdB (EC14026) star

We present a preliminary analysis of time series photometry on the pulsating subdwarf B star PG1336-018 acquired as part of two Whole Earth Telescope runs. PG1336-018 is a multi-mode pulsator with at least 15 periods centered around 175 seconds. It is also an HW~Vir-type eclipsing binary with a period of 2.4 hours. Though over 20 pulsating subdwarf B stars have been discovered, only a few have resolved temporal spectra and still fewer have identified pulsation modes. We analyze features unique to the eclipsing binary system of PG1336-018 as a means of identifying pulsation modes.

An evolutionary study of the pulsating subdwarf B eclipsing binary PG1336-018 (NY Vir)

The formation of subdwarf B (sdB) stars is not well understood within the current framework of stellar single and binary evolution. In this study, we focus on the formation and evolution of the pulsating sdB star in the very short-period eclipsing binary PG1336-018. Variable stars in the Open Cluster M11 (NGC 6705)

V-band time-series CCD photometric observations of the intermediate-age open cluster M11 were performed to search for variable stars. Using these time-series data, we carefully examined light variations of all stars in the observing field. A total of 82 variable stars were discovered, of which 39 stars had been detected recently by Hargis et al. (2005). On the CO Near-IR Band and the Line Splitting Phenomenon in the Yellow Hypergiant Rho Cassiopeiae

We report on multi-epoch optical and near-infrared spectroscopy around the first overtone ro-vibrational band of CO in the pulsating yellow hypergiant Rho Cas, one of the most massive stars in the Galaxy and a candidate SN II progenitor. We argue that the double cores of the CO absorption lines, that have previously been attributed to separate circumstellar shells expelled during its recurrent outbursts, result in fact from a superposition of a wide absorption line and a narrow central emission line. Testing convection in stellar models using detached eclipsing binaries

The fundamental properties of detached eclipsing binary stars can be measured very accurately, which could make them important objects for constraining the treatment of convection in theoretical stellar models. However, only four or five pieces of information can be found for the average system, which is not enough. We discuss studies of more interesting and useful objects: eclipsing binaries in clusters and eclipsing binaries with pulsating components.

Automatic classification of eclipsing binaries light curves using neural networks

In this work we present a system for the automatic classification of the light curves of eclipsing binaries. This system is based on a classification scheme that aims to separate eclipsing binary sistems according to their geometrical configuration in a modified version of the traditional classification scheme. The classification is performed by a Bayesian ensemble of neural networks trained with {\em Hipparcos} data of seven different categories including eccentric binary systems and two types of pulsating light curve morphologies.

Metal abundance of the eclipsing binary YZ Cas: discrepancy between atmospheric determinations for the Am component

We review current and new estimates of the eclipsing binary YZ Cassiopeiae metallicity (Z). Since the individual components cover a quite large range of mass (1.35-2.31 Solar masses), YZ Cas is potentially one of the best stellar laboratories to understand the structure and evolution of 1 to 2 Solar masses stars. The derivation of Z from IUE spectra, as well as from photometric indices, provides the chemical composition of the atmosphere (Z_{atmospheric}), while the fit of evolutionary tracks provides the initial chemical composition (Z_{initial}). Pulsating Components in Close Binaries

We present an overview of pulsating stars in close binaries, focusing on the question what role the dupliticity plays in triggering and/or modifying stellar oscillations and on how it can help us to interpret the oscillatory behaviour of (one of) the components. We give examples of characteristic types of oscillations observed in binaries: forced oscillations and free oscillations in both, short- and long-period binaries. Astrometric and Light-travel Time Orbits to Detect Low-mass Companions: A Case Study of the Eclipsing System R Canis Majoris

We discuss a method to determine orbital properties and masses of low-mass bodies orbiting eclipsing binaries. The analysis combines long-term eclipse timing modulations (light-travel time or LTT effect) with short-term, high-accuracy astrometry. As an illustration of the method, the results of a comprehensive study of Hipparcos astrometry and over a hundred years of eclipse timings of the Algol-type eclipsing binary R Canis Majoris are presented. 2MASSJ0516288+260738: Discovery of the first eclipsing late K + Brown dwarf system?

We report the discovery of a new eclipsing system less than one arcminute south of the pulsating DB white dwarf KUV 05134+2605. The object could be identified with the point source 2MASSJ0516288+260738 published by the Two Micron All Sky Survey. We present and discuss the first light curves as well as some additional colour and spectral information. A photometric survey for variable stars in the globular cluster M5

We present the results of a photometric survey for variable stars in the nearby globular cluster M5. A 14.8x22.8 arcmin^2 field centered on the cluster was monitored for a total of 37 hours with a CCD camera mounted on the 1.0-m Swope telescope. Five new variables were identified: four blue stragglers which are SX Phe pulsating variables, and an eclipsing binary with an orbital period of 0.466 d. Asiago eclipsing binaries program. I. V432 Aur

The orbit and physical parameters of the previously unsolved eclipsing binary V432 Aur, discovered by Hipparcos, have been derived with errors better than 1% from extensive Echelle spectroscopy and B, V photometry. Genetic-Algorithm-based Light Curve Optimization Applied to Observations of the W UMa star BH Cas

I have developed a procedure utilizing a Genetic-Algorithm-based optimization scheme to fit the observed light curves of an eclipsing binary star with a model produced by the Wilson-Devinney code.
