We investigate the static and spherically symmetric solutions of Einstein's equations for a scalar field with non-canonical kinetic term, assumed to provide both the dark matter and dark energy components of the Universe. In particular, we give a prescription to obtain solutions (dark halos) whose rotation curve v_c(r) is in good agreement with observational data. We show that there exist suitable scalar field Lagrangians that allow to describe the cosmological background evolution and the static solutions with a single dark fluid.
In the present work, the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory of gravity is taken as a possible theory of k-essence. Then starting with the (already known) Brans-Dicke-Schwarzschild solution which can represent the gravitationally bound static configurations of the BD scalar k-essence, issues like whether these configurations can reproduce the observed properties of galactic dark matter haloes have been addressed. It has been realized that indeed the BD scalar k-essence can cluster into dark matter halo-like objects with flattened rotation curves while exhibiting a dark energy-like negative pressure on lar…
Recent, very accurate simulations of galaxy formation have revealed that the standard cold dark matter model has great difficulty in explaining the detailed structure of galaxies. One of the major problems is that galactic halos are too centrally concentrated. Dark matter self-interactions have been proposed as a possible means of resolving this inconsistency. Here, we investigate quantitatively the effect of dark matter self interactions on formation of galactic halos. Our numerical framework is extremely simple, while still keeping the essential physics. We confirm that strongly self-interac…
Much recent discussion about dark matter has been centered on two seemingly independent problems: the abundance of substructure in dark matter halos, and the cuspiness of the halos' inner density profile. We explore possible connections between the two problems by studying the gravitational scattering effects due to subhalos on the phase-space distribution of dark matter particles in the main halos. Our series of controlled numerical experiments indicates that the number and mass density of subhalos can be high enough to cause the collisionless dark matter particles in the inner part of a main…
We show that if the neutralino in the minimal supersymmetric standard model is the dark matter in our galaxy, there cannot be a dark matter cusp extending to the galactic center. Conversely, if a dark matter cusp extends to the galactic center, the neutralino cannot be the dark matter in our galaxy. We obtain these results considering the synchrotron emission from neutralino annihilations around the black hole at the galactic center.
High-resolution, numerical simulations of 17 cluster-sized dark-matter haloes in eight different cosmologies with and without dynamical dark energy confirm the picture that core halo densities are imprinted early during their formation by the mean cosmological density. Quite independent of cosmology, halo concentrations have a log-normal distribution with a scatter of ~0.2 about the mean. We propose a simple scaling relation for halo concentrations in dark-energy cosmologies.
We predict the fraction of dark halo lenses, that is, the fraction of lens systems produced by the gravitational potential of dark halos, on the basis of a simple parametric model of baryonic compression. The fraction of dark halo lenses primarily contains information on the effect of baryonic compression and the density profile of dark halos, and is expected to be insensitive to cosmological parameters and source population. The model we adopt comprises the galaxy formation probability p_g(M) which describes the global efficiency of baryonic compression and the ratio of circular velocities of…
The effects of a possible rotation of the galactic dark halo on the calculation of the direct detection rates for particle dark matter are analyzed, with special attention to the extraction of the upper limits on the WIMP--nucleon scalar cross section from the experimental data. We employ a model of dark halo rotation which describes the maximal possible effects. For WIMP masses above 50 GeV, the upper limit exclusion plot is modified by less than a factor of two when rotation is included. For lighter masses the effect can be stronger, suggesting the necessity to develop specific models of hal…
Ultra-light scalar fields provide an interesting alternative to WIMPS as halo dark matter. In this paper we consider the effect of embedding a supermassive black hole within such a halo, and estimate the absorption probability and the accretion rate of dark matter onto the black hole. We show that the accretion rate would be small over the lifetime of a typical halo, and hence that supermassive central black holes can coexist with scalar field halos.
Clumping of elementary dark matter in the Galaxy halo may be inevitable. If so, the nondetection of certain dark matter candidates could simply mean that the local halo density is low. Conversely, indirect detection of annihilation products could be facilitated, perhaps to an embarrassing degree.
The rotation curves of dark matter dominated dwarf galaxies are analysed. The observations show that dark matter halos represent a one-parameter family with self similar density profiles. The global halo parameters, like total mass and scale length are coupled by simple scaling relations. The inner halo regions resemble non-singular, isothermal spheres with constant density cores. The observations are compared with dark matter halos, resulting from cosmological cold dark matter simulations. The theoretical models predict that dark matter halos represent a one-parameter family in agreement with…
The shapes of dark halos (e.g. spherical, oblate or triaxial) provide important clues to the formation history of the halos, to their baryon content and to the nature of the dark matter. The halo shapes also influence the dynamics of the galaxy they harbor. This review discusses the current status of theoretical predictions (halo formation in a cosmological context with and without a dissipative component) and of the observational constraints on halo shapes. Halos are neither predicted nor observed to be spherical.
Massive and extended dark halos can inhibit the formation of long tidal tails in galaxy collisions. We examine this effect using an extensive survey of simulations with different dark halo potentials to constrain halo properties of interacting galaxies. These constraints are compared to other observational limits and theoretical predictions of halo structure. The dark halos predicted by $Ω=1$ cosmological models like CDM are too massive and extended to produce the long tidal tails seen in nearby galaxy collisions. There is also a conflict with the halo potentials inferred from satellite kinema…
The structure of dark matter halos as predicted from cosmological models is discussed and compared with observed rotation curves of dark matter-dominated dwarf galaxies. The theoretical models predict that dark matter halos represent a one-parameter family with a universal density profile. Observations of dark matter-dominated rotation curves indeed confirm the universal structure of dark halos. They are even in excellent agreement with the expected mass-radius scaling relations for the currently favoured cosmological model (standard cold dark matter with Omega_0=0.25 and Omega_{Lambda}=0.75).…
The dissipative infall of gas during the formation of a galaxy modifies the density profile and shape of the dark halo. Gas dissipates energy radiatively and sinks to the center of the dark halo forming the luminous part of a galaxy. The resulting central density enhancement can alter the halo's orbital distribution. We simulate dissipative infall inside of an initially triaxial N-body dark halo by slowly growing a potential in the center of the particle distribution. The dark halo transforms from a prolate-triaxial halo ($T \sim 0.8$) to an oblate-triaxial halo ($T \sim 0.5$) while approximat…
Recent observations indicate that dark matter haloes have flat central density profiles. Cosmological simulations with non-baryonic dark matter predict however self similar haloes with central density cusps. This contradiction has lead to the conclusion that dark matter must be baryonic. Here it is shown that the dark matter haloes of dwarf spiral galaxies represent a one parameter family with self similar density profiles. The observed global halo parameters are coupled with each other through simple scaling relations which can be explained by the standard cold dark matter model if one assume…
Based on a proper motion survey, Oppenheimer et al. claim the detection of a white dwarf component of the dark matter of the halo. I show that most of the white dwarfs in their sample are likely disk white dwarfs which have been previously detected, and represent no new population.
We show how an adequate post--Newtonian generalization can be obtained for Newtonian dark matter halos associated with an empiric density profile. Applying this approach to halos that follow from the well known numerical simulations of Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW), we derive all dynamical variables and show that NFW halos approximatelly follow an ideal gas type of equation of state which fits very well to a polytropic relation in the region outside the core. This fact suggests that ``outer'' regions of NFW halos might be related to equilibrium states in the non--extensive Statistical Mechani…
Clumped dark matter arises naturally within the framwork of generic cosmological dark matter models. Invoking the existence of dark matter clumps can also solve may unexplained mysteries in astrophysics and geology or geophysics, eg. the galactic gamma-ray halo and the periodic terrestrial flood basalt volcanic episodes. Clumped dark matter is dynamically stable to friction and will not heat the disk. Such clumps may have already been discovered in the form of dwarf spheroidals, and further searches are encouraged by the results of this paper.
There is a plethora of dark energy parameterizations that can fit current supernovae Ia data. However, this data is only sensitive to redshifts up to order one. In fact, many of these parameterizations break down at higher redshifts. In this paper we study the effect of dark energy models on the formation of dark halos. We select a couple of dark energy parameterizations which are sensible at high redshifts and compute their effect on the evolution of density perturbations in the linear and non-linear regimes. Using the Press-Schechter formalism we show that they produce distinguishable signat…
We discuss the impact of the cosmological environment on the evolution of dark matter halos using a high-resolution simulation within a spatially flat LCDM cosmology.
Molecular hydrogen clouds can contribute substantially to the galactic halo< dark matter and may lead to the birth of massive halo objects (MHOs) observed indirectly by microlensing. We present a method to detect these molecular clouds in the halo of M31 using the Doppler shift effect. We also consider the possibility to directly observe MHOs in the halo of M31 via their infrared emission.
High-resolution cosmological N-body simulations were performed in order to study the substructure of Milky Way-like galactic halos and the density profiles of halos in a warm dark matter scenario. The results favor this scenario with respect to the cold dark matter one.
The annihilation of dark matter particles releases energy, ionizing some of the gas in the Universe. We investigate the effect of dark matter halos on reionization. We show that the effect depends on the assumed density profile, the particle mass, and the assumed minimum halo mass. For NFW halos and typical WIMPs, we find the effect to be quite small. However, light dark matter candidates in the MeV range can contribute significantly to reionization and can make an important contribution to the measured optical depth. This effect may be used to constrain light dark matter models. We also study…
I discuss the dynamical interaction of galactic disks with the surrounding dark matter halos. In particular it is demonstrated that if the self-gravitating shearing sheet, a model of a patch of a galactic disk, is embedded in a live dark halo, this has a strong effect on the dynamics of density waves in the sheet. I describe how the density waves and the halo interact via halo particles either on orbits in resonance with the wave or on non-resonant orbits. Contrary to expectation the presence of the halo leads to a very considerable enhancement of the amplitudes of the density waves in the she…
We investigate the structure of the dark matter halo formed in three different cold dark matter scenarios. We performed N-body simulations of formation of 13 cluster-sized halos. In all runs, density cusps proportional to $r^{-1.5}$ developed at the center. This result was independent of the cosmological models we simulated. We could not reproduce the cusp shallower than $r^{-1.5}$, which was obtained in some of previous studies. We also found that in all runs the density structure evolves in a self-similar way, even in $Ω\ne 1$ universes. These results show that the formation of structural fo…
We have extended previous analytical studies of the interaction of dark halos with galactic disks by introducing for the halo particles anisotropic distribution functions in phase space. For this purpose we have employed the shearing sheet model of a patch of a galactic disk embedded in a homogeneous halo. We find that velocity anisotropy increases considerably the maximum growth factor of perturbations in the disk.
Using numerical simulations and the Sheth-Tormen approximation we study the mass function of dark matter halos in voids. We find that the void mass function is significantly lower and its shape is different than that of the field halos. We predict that in the standard LCDM model a void with radius 10 h^-1 Mpc should have 50 halos with circular velocity v_c > 50 km/s and 600 halos with v_c > 20 km/s.
A series of arguments is presented for heavy galaxy disks not only in the optical regions, but also in the dark matter dominated regions of spirals. We are testing this possibility with extreme maximum disk N-body models without any conventional spheroidal dark halo.
The observations of microlensing events in the Large Magellanic Cloud suggest that a sizable fraction (\sim 50%) of the galactic halo is in the form of MACHOs (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects) with an average mass $\sim 0.27 M_{\odot}$, assuming a standard spherical halo model. We describe a scenario in which dark clusters of MACHOs and cold molecular clouds (mainly of H_2) naturally form in the halo at galactocentric distances larger than 10-20 kpc.
Virial mass is used as an estimator for the mass of a dark matter halo. However, the commonly used constant overdensity criterion does not reflect the dynamical structure of haloes. Here we analyze dark matter cosmological simulations in order to obtain properties of haloes of different masses focusing on the size of the region with zero mean radial velocity. Dark matter inside this region is stationary, and thus the mass of this region is a much better approximation for the virial mass.
I apply the modified spherical infall model to test the dependence of the shape of density profiles of dark matter halos on redshift. The model predicts that the density profile of a halo of a given mass steepens with time and its concentration parameter changes like c~1/(1+z_0)^2.
We present here the preface and the Table of Content of the Proceedings of the Conference "Baryons in Dark Matter Halos" held in Cittanova/Novigrad (HR) on 5-9 October, 2004 and published on-line by PoS (http://pos.sissa.it) which is a new versatile, online proceedings and lecture notes publication service launched by SISSA, Trieste.
We develop a phenomenological model to predict the clustering of dark matter halos on the light-cone by combining several existing theoretical models. Assuming that the velocity field of halos on large scales is approximated by linear theory, we propose an empirical prescription of a scale-, mass-, and time-dependence of halo biasing. We test our model against the Hubble Volume $N$-body simulation and examine its validity and limitations. We find a good agreement in two-point correlation functions of dark matter halos between the phenomenological model predictions and measurements from the sim…
Density profiles of cosmological virialized systems, or dark halos, have recently attracted much attention. I first present a brief historical review of numerical simulations to quantify the halo density profiles. Then I describe the latest results on the universal density profile and their observational confrontation. Finally I discuss a clustering model of those halos with particular emphasis on the cosmological light-cone effect.
The promising neutralino dark matter particles generically condense into numerous earth-mass dark halos with smaller substructures suppressed by free streaming\cite{berezinsky}. The recent {\it Letter to Nature}\cite{moore} claims that these 0.01pc-sized dense halos emerged at redshifts 60--26 are rarely destructed inside galaxies, hence the nearest halos at about 0.1pc from Earth are bright in annihilation-powered gamma-rays, but are inaccessible to direct detections. However, most mini-halos reaching solar neighbourhood should experience strong impulses by individual stars in the Galactic di…
Galactic dark matter is modelled by a scalar field. In particular, it is shown that an analytically solvable toy model with a non-linear self-interaction potential U(Phi) leads to dark halo models which have the form of quasi-isothermal spheres. We argue that these fit better the observed rotation curves of galaxies than the centrally cusped halos of standard cold dark matter. The scalar field model predicts a proportionality between the central densities of the dark halos and the inverse of their core radii. We test this prediction successfully against a set of rotation curves of low surface …
The EROS and MACHO collaborations have each published upper limits on the amount of planetary mass dark matter in the Galactic Halo obtained from gravitational microlensing searches. In this paper the two limits are combined to give a much stronger constraint on the abundance of low mass MACHOs.
Integral measures of weak gravitational lensing by dark-matter haloes, like the aperture mass, are sensitive to different physical halo properties dependent on the halo mass density profile. For isothermal profiles, the relation between aperture mass and virial mass is steeper than for haloes with the universal NFW profile. Consequently, the halo mass range probed by the aperture mass is much wider for NFW than for isothermal haloes. We use recent modifications to the Press-Schechter mass function in CDM models normalised to the local abundance of rich clusters, to predict the properties of th…
We present line-of-sight stellar velocity distributions of elliptical galaxy NGC 821 obtained to approximately 100 arcsec (over 2 effective radii) with long-slit spectroscopy from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. Our measured stellar line-of-sight velocity distributions are larger than the planetary nebulae measurements at similar radii. We fit axisymmetric orbit-superposition models with a range of dark halo density profiles, including two-dimensional kinematics at smaller radii from SAURON data. Within our assumptions, the best-fitted model gives a total enclosed mass of 2.0x10^11 M_sun within 10…
The observations of microlensing events in the Large Magellanic Cloud suggest that a sizable fraction ($\sim$ 50%) of the galactic halo is in the form of MACHOs (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects) with an average mass $\sim 0.27 M_{\odot}$, assuming a standard spherical halo model. We describe a scenario in which dark clusters of MACHOs and cold molecular clouds (mainly of $H_2$) naturally form in the halo at galactocentric distances larger than 10--20 kpc.
We study the effects of a dark energy component with equation of state p=w rho with constant w >= -1 on the formation of Cold Dark Matter (CDM) haloes. We find two main effects: first, haloes form earlier as w increases, and second, the amplitude of the dark-matter power spectrum gets reduced in order to remain compatible with the large scale Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. These effects counteract. Using recipes derived from numerical simulations, we show that haloes are expected to be up to ~ 50% more concentrated in CDM models with quintessence compared to Lambda-CDM models,…
All galaxies are thought to reside within large halos of dark matter, whose properties can only be determined from indirect observations. The formation and assembly of galaxies is determined from the interplay between these dark matter halos and the baryonic matter they host. Although statistical relations can be used to approximate how massive a galaxy's halo is, very few individual galaxies have direct measurements of their halo masses. We present a method to directly estimate the total mass of a galaxy's dark halo using its system of globular clusters. The link between globular cluster syst…
In this paper we study the angular momentum properties of simulated dark matter halos at high redshift that likely host the first stars in the Universe. Calculating the spin distributions of these $10^6 - 10^7 \Msun$ halos in redshift slices from $z = 15 - 6$, we find that they are well fit by a log-normal distribution as is found for lower redshift and more massive halos in earlier work. We find that both the mean value of the spin and dispersion are largely unchanged with redshift for all halos. Our key result is that subsamples of low and high spin $10^6 \Msun$ and $10^7 \Msun$ halos show d…
We investigate the Jeans instability of a galactic disk embedded in a dynamically responsive dark halo. It is shown that the disk-halo system becomes nominally Jeans unstable. On small scales the instability is suppressed, if the Toomre stability index Q_T is higher than a certain threshold, but on large scales the Jeans instability sets invariably in. However, using a simple self-consistent disk-halo model it is demonstrated that this occurs on scales which are much larger than the system so that this is indeed only a nominal effect. From a practical point of view the Jeans instability of gal…
We present the first physical model for the non-spherical intra-cluster gas distribution in hydrostatic equilibrium under the gravity of triaxial dark matter halos. Adopting the concentric triaxial density profiles of the dark halos with constant axis ratios proposed by Jing & Suto (2002), we derive an analytical expression for the triaxial halo potential on the basis of the perturbation theory, and find the hydrostatic solutions for the gas density and temperature profiles both in isothermal and polytropic equations of state. The resulting iso-potential surfaces are well approximated by triax…
A model of the gravitationally evolved dark matter distribution, in the Eulerian space, is developed. It is a simple extension of the excursion set model that is commonly used to estimate the mass function of collapsed dark matter haloes. In addition to describing the evolution of the dark matter itself, the model allows one to describe the evolution of the Eulerian space distribution of the haloes. It can also be used to describe density profiles, on scales larger than the virial radius, of these haloes, and to quantify the way in which matter flows in and out of Eulerian cells. When the init…
This review is focussed on the outer halos of elliptical galaxies. Its emphasis is on (i) planetary nebulae as test particles to trace the stellar kinematics at large radii, (ii) the observed angular momentum in elliptical galaxy halos and its theoretical relevance, (iii) dynamical modelling of stellar-kinematic data, and (iv) a discussion of the evidence for dark matter halos in ellipticals from a wide range of measurements.
We compare the specific angular momentum profiles of virialized dark halos in cold dark matter (CDM) and warm dark matter (WDM) models using high-resolution dissipationless simulations. The simulations were initialized using the same set of modes, except on small scales, where the power was suppressed in WDM below the filtering length. Remarkably, WDM as well as CDM halos are well-described by the two-parameter angular momentum profile of Bullock et al. (2001), even though the halo masses are below the filtering scale of the WDM. Although the best-fit shape parameters change quantitatively for…
We consider the sensitivity of the circular-orbit adiabatic contraction approximation to the baryon condensation rate and the orbital structure of dark matter halos in the $Λ$CDM paradigm. Using one-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations including the dark matter halo mass accretion history and gas cooling, we demonstrate that the adiabatic approximation is approximately valid even though halos and disks may assemble simultaneously. We further demonstrate the validity of the simple approximation for $Λ$CDM halos with isotropic velocity distributions using three-dimensional N-body simulations. Th…
We study how the internal structure of dark halos is affected if Cold Dark Matter particles are assumed to have a large cross-section for elastic collisions. We identify a cluster halo in a large cosmological N-body simulation and resimulate its formation with progressively increasing resolution. We compare the structure found in the two cases where dark matter is treated as collisionless or as a fluid. For the collisionless case our results agree with those of other workers. Collisional dark matter results in a cluster which is more nearly spherical and has a more singular central density pro…
I present an analysis of the density shapes of dark matter halos in LCDM and LWDM cosmologies. The main results are derived from a statistical sample of galaxy-mass halos drawn from a high resolution LCDM N-body simulation. Halo shapes show significant trends with mass and redshift: low-mass halos are rounder than high mass halos, and, for a fixed mass, halos are rounder at low z. Contrary to previous expectations, which were based on cluster-mass halos and non-COBE normalized simulations, LCDM galaxy-mass halos at z=0 are not strongly flattened, with short to long axis ratios of s = 0.70 +/- …
We reply to the criticism of Gibson & Flynn and of Graff regarding "Direct detection of galactic halo dark matter" by Oppenheimer et al. (2001) (Science, Vol. 292, p. 698), which reported on the discovery of a significant population of halo white dwarfs found in our South Galactic Cap survey. None of their arguments against our claims withstand close scrutiny.
We compute the properties of dark matter halos with mass $10^{6.5}-10^9\msun$ at redshift $z=6-11$ in the standard cold dark matter cosmological model, utilizing a very high resolution N-body simulation. We find that dark matter halos in these mass and redshift ranges are significantly biased over matter with a bias factor in the range 2-6. The dark matter halo mass function displays a slope of $2.05\pm 0.15$ at the small mass end. We do not find a universal dark matter density profile. Instead, we find a significant dependence of the central density profile of dark matter halos on halo mass a…
The statistics of wide-separation (6'' < theta < 15'') gravitational lenses constrain the amount of mass in the cores of dark matter halos on group and cluster mass scales. For a family of halo models with a central cusp $ρ\propto r^{-alpha}$ (1.0 <= alpha <= 1.9), the lack of wide-separation lenses in the large Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey yields an upper limit on the fraction of the halo mass that is contained within ~4% of the virial radius, f_{core} < 0.023 (95% confidence level, LCDM). This limit offers an important test of the cold dark matter paradigm. While the halo profiles derived from…
The proposition that dark matter halos possess angular momentum, though widely accepted, is a theoretical prediction which has, till date, not been observationally verified. The gravi-magnetic field produced by a rotating gravitating object is possibly the only direct consequence of the angular momentum of dark matter halos. The gravitational Faraday rotation produced by the dark matter halo of our galaxy is present in all astronomical observations. A detection of the imprint of this effect on the all-sky cosmic microwave background radiation polarisation pattern would directly probe the angul…
Why do galactic bars rotate with high pattern speeds, when dynamical friction should rapidly couple the bar to the massive, slowly rotating dark halo? This longstanding paradox may be resolved by considering the dynamical interactions between the galactic disk and structures in the dark halo. Dynamical friction between small-scale halo structure and the disk spins up and flattens the inner halo, thereby quenching the dynamical friction exerted by the halo on the bar; at the same time the halo heats and thickens the disk, perhaps forming a rapidly rotating bulge. Two possible candidates for the…
It is shown that if the self-gravitating shearing sheet, a model of a patch of a galactic disk, is embedded in a live dark halo, this has a strong effect on the dynamics of density waves in the sheet. I describe how the density waves and the halo interact via halo particles either on orbits in resonance with the wave or on non-resonant orbits. Contrary to expectation the presence of the halo leads to a very considerable enhancement of the amplitudes of the density waves in the shearing sheet. This effect appears to be the equivalent of the recently reported enhanced growth of bars in numerical…
