In planar (baby) Skyrme systems, there may be extended linear structures which resemble either domain walls or chains of skyrmions, depending on the choice of potential and boundary conditions. We show that systems with a single vacuum, for example with potential V=1-phi_3, admit chain solutions, whereas walls are ruled out by the uniqueness of the vacuum. On the other hand, in double-vacuum systems such as V=1/2*(1-phi_3^2), one has stable wall solutions, but there are no stable chains; the walls may be viewed as the primary objects in such systems, with skyrmions being made out of them.
We numerically simulate the formation of $(2+1)$-dimensional baby Skyrmions and $(3+1)$-dimensional $SU(2)$ Skyrmions from domain wall collisions. It has been suggested that Skyrmion, anti-Skyrmion pairs can be produced from the interaction of two domain walls. This is confirmed, however it is also demonstrated that the process can require quite precise conditions. An alternative, more stable, formation process is proposed as the interaction of more than two segments of domain wall. This is simulated, requiring far less constraints on the initial conditions used. Finally domain wall networks a…
It has recently been shown that Skyrmions with a fixed size can exist in theories without a Skyrme term, providing the Skyrmion is located on a domain wall. Here we numerically compute domain wall Skyrmions of this type, in a (2+1)-dimensional O(3) sigma model with a potential term. Moreover, we investigate Skyrmion dynamics, to study both Skyrmion stability and the scattering of multi-Skyrmions. We demonstrate that scattering events in which both Skyrmions remain on the same domain wall are effectively one-dimensional, and at low speeds are well-approximated by kink scattering in the integrab…
We study classical solutions of the vector O(3) sigma model in (2+1) dimensions, spontaneously broken to O(2)xZ2. The model possesses Skyrmion-type solutions as well as stable domain walls which connect different vacua. We show that different types of waves can propagate on the wall, including waves carrying a topological charge. The domain wall can also absorb Skyrmions and, under appropriate initial conditions, it is possible to emit a Skyrmion from the wall.
We study classical solutions of a particular version of the modified Skyrme model in (3+1) dimensions. The model possesses Skyrmion solutions as well as stable domain walls that connect different vacua of the theory. We show that there is an attractive interaction between Skyrmions and domain walls. Thus Skyrmions can be captured by the domain walls. We show also that, when the mass term is of a special type, the model possesses bound states of Skyrmions and of the domain wall. They look like deformed 2-dimensional Skyrmions captured by the wall. The field configurations of these solutions can…
We study the 3+1 dimensional Skyrme model with a mass term different from the usual one. We show that this new model possesses domain walls solutions. We describe how, in the equivalent 2+1 dimensional model, the Skyrmion is absorbed by the wall.
Skyrmion walls are topologically-nontrivial solutions of the Skyrme system which are periodic in two spatial directions. We report numerical investigations which show that solutions representing parallel multi-walls exist. The most stable configuration is that of the square $N$-wall, which in the $N\to\infty$ limit becomes the cubically-symmetric Skyrme crystal. There is also a solution resembling parallel hexagonal walls, but this is less stable.
The O(3) Skyrme system in two space dimensions admits topological soliton solutions. This paper studies the transition between the high-density crystalline phase of such solitons and the low-density phase where there are multi-Skyrmions localized in space. The details depend crucially on the choice of the potential function. Two such choices are investigated: in the first system, multi-Skyrmions at low density form a ring; while in the second, there is an explicit crystal solution, and the preferred low-density configurations are chunks of this crystal. The second system is a particularly good…
Domain wall skyrmions are skyrmions trapped inside a domain wall. We investigate domain wall skyrmions in chiral magnets using a fully analytic approach. Treating the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction perturbatively, we construct the low-energy effective theory of a magnetic domain wall in an $O(3)$ sigma model with the DM interaction and an easy-axis potential term, yielding a sine-Gordon model. We then construct domain wall skyrmions as sine-Gordon solitons along the domain wall. We also construct domain wall skyrmions on top of a pair of a domain wall and an anti-domain wall. One of ch…
We study Skyrmion dynamics in a (2+1)-dimensional Skyrme model. The system contains a dimensionless parameter alpha, with alpha=0 corresponding to the O(3) sigma-model. If two Skyrmions collide head-on, then they can either coalesce or scatter -- this depends on alpha and on the incident speed v, and is affected by transfer of energy to and from the internal vibrational modes of the Skyrmions. We classify these internal modes and compute their spectrum, for a range of values of alpha. In particular, we find that there is a fractal-like structure of scattering windows, analogous to those seen f…
Skyrmions of different dimensions are related by domain walls. We obtain explicit full numerical solutions of various Skyrmion configurations trapped inside a domain wall. We find for the quadratic mass-term that multi-Skyrmions are ring-shaped, and conjecture for the linear mass-term, that the lowest-energy state of multi-Skyrmions will consist of charge-2 rings accommodated in a lattice.
The broken planar Skyrme model is a theory that breaks global O(3) symmetry to the dihedral group D_N. It has been shown that the single soliton solution is formed of N constituent parts, named partons, that are topologically confined. The multi-soliton solutions have already been computed for N = 3 and were shown to be related to polyiamonds. We extend this for larger N and demonstrate that this polyform structure continues (planar figures formed by regular N-gons joined along their edges, of which polyiamonds are the N=3 subset). Furthermore, we numerically simulate the dynamics of this mode…

Some years ago, Atiyah and Manton described a method to construct approximate Skyrmion solutions from Yang-Mills instantons. Here we present a dynamical realization of this construction using domain walls in a five-dimensional gauge theory. The non-abelian gauge symmetry is broken in each vacuum but restored in the core of the domain wall, allowing instantons to nestle inside the wall. We show that the worldvolume dynamics of the wall is given by the Skyrme model, including the four-derivative term, and the instantons appear as Skyrmions.
We consider the BEC-Skyrme model which is based on a Skyrme-type model with a potential motivated by Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and, in particular, we study the Skyrmions in proximity of a domain wall that inhabits the theory. The theory turns out to have a rich flora of Skyrmion solutions that manifest themselves as twisted vortex rings or vortons in the bulk and vortex handles attached to the domain wall. The latter are linked open vortex strings. We further study the interaction between the domain wall and the Skyrmion and between the vortex handles themselves as well as between the v…
A lump (2D Skyrmion) can be constructed as a sine-Gordon kink (1D Skyrmion) inside a domain wall in the massive O(3) sigma model. In this paper, we discuss relations between Skyrmions in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions. We first construct a Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield 3D Skyrmion as a lump inside a non-Abelian domain wall in an O(4) sigma model with a potential term admitting two discrete vacua. Next, we construct a conventional 3D Skyrmion as a baby Skyrmion in a non-Abelian domain wall in the Skyrme model with a modified mass term admitting two discrete vacua. We also construct a spinning 3D Skyrm…
We construct a stable Skyrmion in 3+1 dimensions as a sine-Gordon kink inside a domain wall within a domain wall in an O(4) sigma model with hierarchical mass terms without the Skyrme term. We also find that higher dimensional Skyrmions can stably exist with a help of non-Abelian domain walls in an O(N) model with hierarchical mass terms without a Skyrme term, which leads a matryoshka structure of Skyrmions.
We address a simple model allowing the existence of domain walls with orientational moduli localized on them. Within this model, we discuss an analytic solution and explore it in the context of previously known results. We discuss the existence of one-dimensional domain walls localized on two-dimensional ones, and construct the corresponding effective action. In the low-energy limit, which is the $\mathbb{O}(3)$ sigma-model, we discuss the existence of skyrmions localized on domain walls, and provide a solution for a skyrmion configuration, based on an analogy with instantons. We perform symme…

We elucidate magnetic effects in the skyrmion system to probe into the dense nuclear matter. We find a deformed $π^0$ dipole structure of a baryon induced by a magnetic field. We then extend our scope to stacked Skyrme crystal layers to scrutinize phases of magnetized nuclear matter. We observe a quantized magnetic flux and identify a phase transition from a crystalline state to a $π^0$ domain wall corresponding to a topological transmutation from $π_3(S^3)$ to $π_1(S^1)$. We establish the phase diagram, which could be explored also in analogous systems with two-component Bose-Einstein condens…
Domain wall - type solution with oscillating thickness in a real, scalar field model is investigated with the help of a polynomial approximation. We propose a simple extension of the polynomial approximation method. In this approach we calculate higher order corrections to the planar domain wall solution, find that the domain wall with oscillating thickness radiates, and compute dumping of oscillations of the domain wall.
We propose a mechanism to create a vorton or three-dimensional skyrmion in phase-separated two-component BECs with the order parameters Psi_1 and Psi_2 of the two condensates. We consider a pair of a domain wall (brane) and an anti-domain wall (anti-brane) stretched by vortices (strings), where the Psi_2 component with a vortex winding is sandwiched by two domains of the Psi_1 component. The vortons appear when the domain wall pair annihilates. Experimentally, this can be realized by preparing the phase separation in the order Psi_1, Psi_2 and Psi_1 components, where the nodal plane of a dark …

The BPS baby Skyrme models are submodels of baby Skyrme models, where the nonlinear sigma model term is suppressed. They have skyrmion solutions saturating a BPS bound, and the corresponding static energy functional is invariant under area-preserving diffeomorphisms (APDs). Here we show that the solitons in the BPS baby Skyrme model, which carry a nontrivial topological charge $Q_{b} \in π_2(S^2)$ (a winding number), are dual to vortices in a BPS vortex model with a topological charge $Q_{v}\in π_1(S^1)$ (a vortex number), in the sense that there is a map between the BPS solutions of the two m…
We investigate gravitational properties of thin planar wall solutions of the Einstein's equations in the weak field approximation. We find the general metric solutions and discuss the behavior of a particle placed initially at rest to one side of the plane. Moreover we study the case of non-reflection-symmetric solutions.
