The available data on neutron scattering were analyzed to constrain a hypothetical new short-range interaction. We show that these constraints are several orders of magnitude better than those usually cited in the range between 1 pm and 5 nm. This distance range occupies an intermediate space between collider searches for strongly coupled heavy bosons and searches for new weak macroscopic forces. We emphasise the reliability of the neutron constraints in so far as they provide several independent strategies. We have identified the most promising way to improve them.
Recently, quantum states of ultra-cold neutrons in the Earth's gravitational field have been observed for the first time. From the fact that they are consistent with Newtonian gravity on the 10 %-level, analytical limits on alpha and lambda of short-range Yukawa-like additional interactions are derived between lambda = 1 micrometer and 1 mm. We arrive for lambda > 10 micrometer at alpha < 2 \cdot 10^11 at 90 % confidence level. This translates into a limit g_s g_p / (\hbar c) < 2 \cdot 10^{-15} on the pseudo-scalar coupling of axions in the previously experimentally unaccessible astrophysical …
Recent discovery of the afterglow emission from short gamma-ray bursts suggests that binary neutron star or black hole-neutron star binary mergers are the likely progenitors of these short bursts. The accretion of neutron star material and its subsequent ejection by the central engine implies a neutron-rich outflow. We consider here a neutron-rich relativistic jet model of short bursts, and investigate the high energy neutrino and photon emission as neutrons and protons decouple from each other. We find that upcoming neutrino telescopes are unlikley to detect the 50 GeV neutrinos expected in t…
We study the nuclear ($A$) dependence of the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) effect at high values of $x$ ($x \geq 0.6$). Our approach makes use of conventional nuclear degrees of freedom within the Relativistic Impulse Approximation. By performing a non-relativistic series expansion we demonstrate that relativistic corrections make a substantial contribution to the effect at $x \gtrsim 0.6$ and show that the ratio of neutron to proton structure functions extracted from a global fit to all nuclei is not inconsistent with values obtained from the deuteron.
We argue that significant probability of protons with momenta above their Fermi surface leads for proton concentrations p/n > 1/8 to the enhancement of termally excited direct and modified URCA processes within a cold neutron star, and to a nonzero probability of direct URCA processes for small proton concentrations (p/n < 1/8). We evaluate high momentum tails of neutron, proton and electrons distributions within a neutron star. We expect also significantly faster neutrino cooling of hyperon stars.
This event, so far unique, beautifully confirmed the standard views on the gravitational waves produced by a merger of two neutron stars, but its electromagnetic multi-wavelenth observations disagreed with the numerous initial versions of the "standard fireball model(s)" of gamma ray bursts. Contrariwise, they provided strong evidence in favour of the "cannonball" model. Most uncontroversially, a cannonball was observed at radio wavelengths, with an overwhelming statistical significance ($>\! 17\,σ$), and travelling in the plane of the sky, as expected, at an apparent superluminal velocity $V_…
Due to the lack of a free neutron target the structure function of the neutron cannot be measured directly and is therefore extracted from deuteron and proton DIS data. Because the deuteron is a bound nuclear system, in order to extract the neutron structure function, one needs to apply model dependent theoretical corrections which dominate the uncertainty at the large xB region. We present here a correlation between the magnitude of the EMC effect and the amount of two nucleon Short Range Correlation (2N-SRC) pairs in nuclei. Using this correlation we propose a phenomenological procedure to e…
Supernovae (SNe) are copious sources for Kaluza-Klein gravitons which are generic for theories with large extra dimensions. These massive particles are produced with average velocities ~0.5 c so that many of them are gravitationally retained by the SN core. Every neutron star thus has a halo of KK gravitons which decay into nu bar-nu, e^+e^- and gamma gamma on time scales \~10^9 years. The EGRET gamma-flux limits (E_gamma ~ 100 MeV) for nearby neutron stars constrain the fundamental scale for n=2 extra dimensions to M >500 TeV, and M>30 TeV for n=3. The upcoming GLAST satellite is a factor ~30…
We investigate neutron-antineutron oscillations in the Randall-Sundrum warped extra dimensional scenario. The four dimensional effective strengths of the relevant operators that induce the oscillations are calculated up to an arbitrary coupling along with their corresponding enhancements due to QCD 1-loop running effects. We find that the $ΔB = 2$ operators can be geometrically suppressed without fine tuning to within current experimental limits with a warped down four dimensional mass scale which can be as low as a fraction of a TeV.
An impulse approximation analysis is described of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) H and E of the 3He nucleus, quantities which are accessible in hard exclusive processes, such as coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS). The calculation is based on the Av18 interaction. The electromagnetic form factors are correctly recovered in the proper limits. The sum of the GPDs H and E of 3He, at low momentum transfer, is largely dominated by the neutron contribution, thanks to the unique spin structure of 3He. This nucleus is therefore very promising for the extraction of the neutro…
We extract the neutron charge form factor from the charge form factor of deuteron obtained from $T_{20}(Q^2)$ data at $0\le Q^2\le$ 1.717 (GeV$^2$). The extraction is based on the relativistic impulse approximation in the instant form of the relativistic Hamiltonian dynamics. Our results (12 new points) are compatible with existing values of the neutron charge form factor of other authors. We propose a fit for the whole set (35 points) taking into account the data for the slope of the form factor at $Q^2 = 0$.
Background: Deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) on the deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging represents a unique method for extracting the free neutron structure functions and exploring the nuclear modifications of bound protons and neutrons. The detection of the spectator (with typical momenta $\lesssim$ 100 MeV/c in the deuteron rest frame) controls the nuclear configuration during the DIS process and enables a differential analysis of nuclear effects. At the future electron-ion collider (EIC) such measurements will be performed using far-forward detectors. Purpose: Simulate deuteron DIS with …
We present work in a model used to describe semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off the deuteron. The model uses the virtual nucleon approximation to describe the interaction of the photon with the bound neutron and the generalized eikonal approximation is applied to calculate the final-state interaction diagram. Comparison with data taken at Jefferson Lab shows good agreement in the covered range of kinematics and points at a largely suppressed off-shell rescattering amplitude. The $W$ and $Q^2$ dependences of the total cross section and slope factor of the interaction of DIS products, $…
We show that several features reminiscent of short-hard Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) arise naturally when Quark-Novae occur in low-mass X-ray binaries born with massive neutron stars (> 1.6M_sun) and harboring a circumbinary disk. Near the end of the first accretion phase, conditions are just right for the explosive conversion of the neutron star to a quark star (Quark-Nova). In our model, the subsequent interaction of material from the neutron star's ejected crust with the circumbinary disk explains the duration, variability and near-universal nature of the prompt emission in short-hard GRBs. We a…
We propose a new method for extracting neutron structure functions from inclusive structure functions of nuclei. Unlike earlier approaches, the new method is applicable to both spin-averaged and spin-dependent structure functions. We test the reliability of the method on unpolarized F_2 and polarized g_1 structure functions of the deuteron in both the nucleon resonance and deep inelastic regions. The new method is able to reproduce known input functions of almost arbitrary shape to very good accuracy with only several iterations.
Neutron structure functions can be extracted from proton and deuteron data and a representation of the deuteron structure. This procedure does not require DIS approximations or quark structure assumptions. We find that the results depend critically on properly accounting for the Q^2 dependence of proton and deuteron data. We interpolate the data to fixed Q^2, and extract the ratio of neutron to proton structure functions. The extracted ratio decreases with increasing x, up to x \approx 0.9, while there are no data available to constrain the behavior at larger x.
We consider the effect of the transitions $n \to Δ^{0}$ and $p \to Δ^{+}$ in deep inelastic scattering on polarized $^3$He on the extraction of the neutron spin structure function $g_{1}^{n}(x,Q^2)$. Making the natural assumption that these transitions are the dominant non-nucleonic contributions to the renormalization of the axial vector coupling constant in the A=3 system, we find that the effect of $Δ$ increases $g_{1}^{n}(x,Q^2)$ by $10 ÷40$% in the range $0.05 \le x \le 0.6$, where our considerations are applicable and most of the data for $g_{1}^{n}(x,Q^2)$ exist.
We discuss the procedure of extracting the photoproduction cross section for neutral pseudoscalar mesons off neutrons from deuteron data. The main statement is that the final-state interaction (FSI) corrections for the proton and neutron target are in general not equal, but for pi0 production there are special cases were they have to be identical and there are large regions in the parameter space of incident photon energy and pion polar angle, θ^*, where they happen to be quite similar. The corrections for both target nucleons are practically identical for $π_0$ production in the energy range …
