We present results from magneto-hydrodynamic jet simulations in the magnetically dominated regime and find that they inflate cavities into the intracluster medium. Mock Chandra X-ray observations of our simulations show a strong resemblance to real cavities observed in X-ray images of clusters, both in terms of their morphology and thermodynamic structure. An analysis of the evolution of bubble sizes in the multi-cavity system Hydra A, as well as in a large sample of 64 cavities in 32 clusters shows that bubbles tend to expand much faster than expected in the purely adiabatic regime. Instead, we find that the bubbles follow more closely a trend predicted by our current-carrying jet models.
We present cosmological magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the formation of a galaxy cluster with magnetic energy feedback from an active galactic nuclei (AGN). We demonstrate that X-ray cavities can be produced by the magnetically dominated jet-lobe system that is supported by a central axial current. The cavities are magnetically dominated and their morphology is determined jointedly by the magnetic fields and the background cluster pressure profile. The expansion and motion of the cavities are driven initially by the Lorentz force of the magnetic fields, and the cavities only become buoyant…
We suggest a new approach that could be used for modeling both the large scale behavior of astrophysical jets and the magnetically dominated explosions in astrophysics. We describe a method for modeling the injection of magnetic fields and their subsequent evolution in a regime where the free energy is magnetically dominated. The injected magnetic fields, along with their associated currents, have both poloidal and toroidal components, and they are not force free. The dynamic expansion driven by the Lorentz force of the injected fields is studied using 3-dimensional ideal magnetohydrodynamic s…
We discuss the role of thermal cyclo-synchrotron emission in a magnetically dominated corona above an accretion disk in an active galaxy or a galactic black hole candidate. The dissipation occurs in localized active regions around the central black hole. Cyclo-synchrotron radiation is found to be an important process. In the case of galactic black hole candidates, its emission can dominate the inverse Compton scattering of the soft photon field produced by the disc by thermal electrons. We discuss observational predictions and the detectability of cyclo-synchrotron radiation both for these sou…
We argue the behavior of Poynting flux-dominated outflows from AGN in the galactic cluster systems by performing three-dimensional MHD simulations within the framework of the "magnetic tower" model. Of particular interests are the structure of MHD waves, the cylindrical radial force balance, the (de)collimation, and the stability properties of magnetic tower jets. Transition between the jet/lobe and the formation of wiggling jet by growing current-driven instability are discussed.
Many astrophysical sources of high energy emission, such as black hole magnetospheres, superstrongly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars), and probably relativistic jets in Active Galactic Nuclei and Gamma Ray Bursts involve relativistically magnetically dominated plasma. In such plasma the energy density of magnetic field greatly exceeds the thermal and the rest mass energy density of particles. Therefore the magnetic field is the main reservoir of energy and its dissipation may power the bursting emission from these sources, in close analogy to Solar flares. One of the principal dissipative …
To understand the formation of a magnetically dominated molecular cloud out of an atomic cloud, we follow the dynamical evolution of the cloud with a time-dependent axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic code. A thermally stable warm atomic cloud is initially in static equilibrium with the surrounding hot ionised gas. A shock propagating through the hot medium interacts with the cloud. As a fast-mode shock propagates through the cloud, the gas behind it becomes thermally unstable. The $β$ value of the gas also becomes much smaller than the initial value of order unity. These conditions are ideal for…
We perform a series of two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic core-collapse simulations of rapidly rotating and strongly magnetized massive stars. To study the properties of magnetic explosions for a longer time stretch of postbounce evolution, we develop a new code under the framework of special relativity including a realistic equation of state with a multiflavor neutrino leakage scheme. Our results show the generation of the magnetically-dominated jets in the two ways. One is launched just after the core-bounce in a prompt way and another is launched at $ \sim 100 $ ms after the stall of the p…
In this paper I propose that the inner part of a black hole accretion inflow ($< 100 r_{g}$) may enter a magnetically-dominated, magnetosphere-like phase in which the strong, well-ordered fields play a more important role than weak, turbulent fields. In the low/hard state this flow is interior to the standard ADAF usually invoked to explain the observed hot, optically thin emission. Preliminary solutions for these new MDAFs are presented. Time-dependent X-ray and radio observations give considerable insight into these processes, and a new interpretation of the X-ray power spectrum (as arising …
We present new high resolution (100 arcsec) neutral hydrogen (H I) self-absorption images of the Riegel-Crutcher cloud obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Parkes Radio Telescope. The Riegel-Crutcher cloud lies in the direction of the Galactic center at a distance of 125 +/- 25 pc. Our observations resolve the very large, nearby sheet of cold hydrogen into a spectacular network of dozens of hair-like filaments. Individual filaments are remarkably elongated, being up to 17 pc long with widths of less than ~0.1 pc. The strands are reasonably cold, with spin temperatures of…
We consider the dynamical evolution of an interstellar cloud that is initially in thermal equilibrium in the warm phase and is then subjected to a sudden increase in the pressure of its surroundings. We find that if the initial plasma beta of the cloud is of order unity, then there is a considerable period during which the material in the cloud both has a small beta and is in the thermally unstable temperature range. These conditions are not only consistent with observations of star forming regions, but are also ideally suited to the production of density inhomogeneities by magnetohydrodynamic…
(Abridged) We present one of the first physically-motivated two-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) numerical simulations of a radiatively-cooled black-hole accretion disk. The fiducial simulation combines a total-energy-conserving formulation with a radiative cooling function, which includes bremsstrahlung, synchrotron, and Compton effects. By comparison with other simulations we show that in optically thin advection-dominated accretion flows, radiative cooling can significantly affect the structure, without necessarily leading to an optically thick, geometrically thi…
We present results from an extensive survey of 64 cavities in the X-ray halos of clusters, groups and normal elliptical galaxies. We show that the evolution of the size of the cavities as they rise in the X-ray atmosphere is inconsistent with the standard model of adiabatic expansion of purely hydrodynamic models. We also note that the majority of the observed bubbles should have already been shredded apart by Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities if they were of purely hydrodynamic nature. Instead we find that the data agrees much better with a model where the cavities are magne…
The effects of radiation drag force on the structure of relativistic electron-positron and electron-proton outflows are considered within the one-fluid approximation for quasi-monopole cold outflow. It is shown that for a Poynting-dominated case the drag force does not change the particle energy inside the fast magnetosonic surface. In this region the action of the drag results in a diminishing of the Poynting flux, not the particle flux. Outside the fast magnetosonic surface, for intermediate photon density the drag force may result in additional acceleration of the plasma. This acceleration …
We obtained steady solutions of optically thin, single temperature, magnetized black hole accretion disks assuming thermal bremsstrahlung cooling. Based on the results of 3D MHD simulations of accretion disks, we assumed that the magnetic fields inside the disk are turbulent and dominated by azimuthal component. We decomposed magnetic fields into an azimuthally averaged mean field and fluctuating fields. We also assumed that the azimuthally averaged Maxwell stress is proportional to the total pressure. The radial advection rate of the azimuthal magnetic flux $\dot Φ$ is prescribed as being pro…
This article investigates the physics that is responsible for creating the outgoing Poynting flux emanating from the ergosphere of a rotating black hole in the limit that the magnetic energy density greatly exceeds the plasma rest mass density (magnetically dominated limit). The underlying physics is derived from published 3-D simulations that obey the general relativistic equations of perfect magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). It is found that the majority of the outgoing radial Poynting flux emitted from the magnetically dominated regions of the ergosphere is injected into the magnetosphere by a so…
The presence of an imposed external magnetic field may drastically influence the structure of thin accretion discs. The magnetic field energy is here assumed to be in balance with the thermal energy of the accretion flow. The vertical magnetic field, its toroidal component B^tor at the disc surface (due to different rotation rates between disc and its magnetosphere), the turbulent magnetic Prandtl number and the viscosity-alpha are the key parameters of our model. Inside the corotation radius for rather small B^tor the resulting inclination angle i of the magnetic field lines to the disc surfa…
This Letter investigates the physics that is responsible for creating the current system that supports the outgoing Poynting flux emanating from the ergosphere of a rotating black hole in the limit that the magnetic energy density greatly exceeds the plasma rest mass density (magnetically dominated limit). The underlying physics is derived from published three-dimensional simulations that obey the general relativistic equations of perfect magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). It is found that the majority of the Poynting flux emitted from the magnetically dominated regions of the ergosphere has a source…
It has been suggested that magnetic fields play a dynamically-important role in core-collapse explosions of massive stars. In particular, they may be important in the collapsar scenario for gamma-ray bursts (GRB), where the central engine is a hyper-accreting black hole or a millisecond magnetar. The present paper is focussed on the magnetar scenario, with a specific emphasis on the interaction of the magnetar magnetosphere with the infalling stellar envelope. First, the ``Pulsar-in-a-Cavity'' problem is introduced as a paradigm for a magnetar inside a collapsing star. The basic set-up of this…
In this paper we report the results of the first ever time-dependent general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the magnetically dominated monopole magnetospheres of black holes. It is found that the numerical solution evolves towards a stable steady-state solution which is very close to the corresponding force-free solution found by Blandford and Znajek. Contrary to the recent claims, the particle inertia does not become dynamically important near the event horizon and the force-free approximation provides a proper framework for magnetically dominated magnetospheres of black hole…
A broad swathe of astrophysical phenomena, ranging from tubular planetary nebulae through Herbig-Haro objects, radio-galaxy and quasar emissions to gamma-ray bursts and perhaps high-energy cosmic rays, may be driven by magnetically-dominated jets emanating from accretion disks. We give a self-contained account of the analytic theory of non-relativistic magnetically dominated jets wound up by a swirling disk and making a magnetic cavity in a background medium of any prescribed pressure, p(z). We solve the time-dependent problem for any specified distribution of magnetic flux P(R,0) emerging fro…
We discuss the effect of the Poynting flow on the magnetically dominated thin accretion disk, which is simplified to a two-dimensional disk on the equatorial plane. It is shown in the relativistic formulation that the Poynting flux by the rotating magnetic field with Keplerian angular velocity can balance the energy and angular momentum conservation of a steady accretion flow.
Many models of gamma-ray bursts suggest a common central engine: a black hole of several solar masses accreting matter from a disk at an accretion rate from 0.01 to 10 M_\sun / s. The inner region of the disk is cooled by neutrino emission and large amounts of its binding energy were liberated, which could trigger the fireball. We improve the neutrino-dominated accreting flows by considering the effects of the magnetic fields, and find that more than half of the liberating energy can be extracted directly by the large-scale magnetic fields on the disk. And it turns out that the temperature of …
Collimated outflows (jets) are ubiquitous in the universe appearing around sources as diverse as protostars and extragalactic supermassive blackholes. Jets are thought to be magnetically collimated, and launched from a magnetized accretion disk surrounding a compact gravitating object. We have developed the first laboratory experiments to address time-dependent, episodic phenomena relevant to the poorly understood jet acceleration and collimation region. The experimental results show the periodic ejections of magnetic bubbles naturally evolving into a heterogeneous jet propagating inside a cha…
