Minghai Li, Yongsheng Liu, Huifen Nie, Rama Bansil, Milos Steinhart
Time-resolved small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to examine the kinetics of the transition from HEX cylinders to BCC spheres at various temperatures in poly(styrene-b- ethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS) in mineral oil, a selective solvent for the middle EB block. Temperature-ramp SAXS and rheology measurements show the HEX to BCC order-order transition (OOT) at ~127 oC and order-disorder transition (ODT) at ~180 oC. We also observed the metastability limit of HEX in BCC with a spinodal temperature, Ts ~ 150 oC. The OOT exhibits 3 stages and occurs via a nucleation and growth mechanism when the final temperature Tf < Ts. Spinodal decomposition in a continuous ordering system was seen when Ts< Tf < TODT. We observed that HEX cylinders transform to disordered spheres via a transient BCC state. We develop a geometrical model of coupled anisotropic fluctuations and calculate the scattering which shows very good agreement with the SAXS data. The splitting of the primary peak into two peaks when the cylinder spacing and modulation wavelength are incommensurate predicted by the model is confirmed by analysis of the SAXS data.
Photon correlation spectroscopy and rheological measurements are performed to investigate the microscopic dynamics and mechanical responses of aqueous solutions of triblock copolymers and aqueous mixtures of triblock copolymers and anionic surfactants. Increasing the concentration of triblock copolymers results in a sharp increase in the magnitude of the complex moduli characterising the samples. This is understood in terms of the changes in the aggregation and packing behaviours of the copolymers and the constraints imposed upon their dynamics due to increased close packing. The addition of s…
The phase behaviour of blends of ABC triblock and ac diblock copolymers is examined using self-consistent field theory. Several equilibrium lamellar structures are observed, depending on the volume fraction of the diblocks, phi_2, the monomer interactions, and the degrees of polymerization of the copolymers. For segregations just above the order-disorder transition the triblocks and diblocks mix together to form centrosymmetric lamellae. As the segregation is increased the triblocks and diblocks spatially separate either by macrophase-separating, or by forming a non-centrosymmetric (NCS) phase…
The phase behavior of polydisperse ABA triblock copolymers is studied using dissipative particle dynamics simulations, focusing on the emergence and property of bicontinuous structures. Bicontinuous structures are characterized by two separate, intermeshed nanoscopic domains extending throughout the material. The connectivity of polymeric bicontinuous structures makes them highly desirable for many applications. For conventional monodisperse diblock and triblock copolymers, regular bicontinuous structures (i.e., gyroid and Fddd) can be formed over a narrow composition window of ~3%. We demonst…
We have used the Scheutjens-Fleer self-consistent field (SF-SCF) method to predict the self-assembly of triblock copolymers with a solvophilic middle block and sufficiently long solvophobic outer blocks. We model copolymers consisting of polyethylene oxide (PEO) as solvophilic block and poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) or poly({\ko}-caprolactone) (PCL) as solvophobic block. These copolymers form structurally quenched spherical micelles provided the solvophilic block is long enough. Predictions are calibrated on experimental data for micelles composed of PCL-PEO-PCL and PLGA-PEO-PLGA triblo…
We develop a multiscale simulation model for diffusion of solutes through porous triblock copolymer membranes. The approach combines two techniques: self-consistent field theory (SCFT) to predict the structure of the self-assembled, solvated membrane and on-lattice kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations to model diffusion of solutes. Solvation is simulated in SCFT by constraining the glassy membrane matrix while relaxing the brush-like membrane pore coating against the solvent. The kMC simulations capture the resulting solute spatial distribution and concentration-dependent local diffusivity in…
The Leibler weak segregation theory in molten diblock copolymers is generalized with due regard for the 2nd shell harmonics contributions defined in the paper and the phase diagrams are built for the linear and miktoarm ternary ABC triblock copolymers. The symmetric linear copolymers with the middle block non-selective with respect to the side ones are shown to undergo the continuous ODT not only into the lamellar phase but also into various non-conventional cubic phases (depending on the middle block composition it could be the simple cubic, face-centered cubic or non-centrosymmetric phase re…
Force-driven chemical reactions have emerged as an attractive platform for diverse applications in polymeric materials. However, the network topologies necessary for efficiently transducing macroscopic forces to the molecular scale are not well-understood. In this work, we use coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the impact of network topology on mechanochemical activation in a self-assembled triblock copolymers. We find that mechanochemical activation during tensile deformation depends strongly on both the polymer composition and chain conformation in these materials, …
The elastic property of membranes self-assembled from AB diblock and ABA triblock copolymers, as coarse-grained model of lipids and the bolalipids, are studied using the self-consistent field theory (SCFT). Specifically, solutions of the SCFT equations, corresponding to membranes in different geometries (planar, cylindrical, spherical, and pore) have been obtained for a model system composed of amphiphilic AB diblock copolymers and ABA triblock copolymers dissolved in A homopolymers. The free energy of the membranes with different geometries is then used to extract the bending modulus, Gaussia…
Using the self-consistent field lattice model, polymer concentration $\barϕ_{P}$ and chain length $N$ (keeping the length ratio of hydrophobic to hydrophilic blocks constant) the effects on temperature-dependent behavior of micelles are studied, in amphiphilic symmetric ABA triblock copolymer solutions. When chain length is increased, at fixed $\barϕ_{P}$, micelles occur at higher temperature. The variations of average volume fraction of stickers $\barϕ_\textrm{co}^\textrm{s}$ and the lattice site numbers $N_\textrm{co}^\textrm{ls}$ at the micellar cores with temperature are dependent on $N$ a…
The shear flow of a triblock copolymer micellar solution (PEO--PPO--PEO Pluronic P84 in brine) is investigated using simultaneous rheological and velocity profile measurements in the concentric cylinder geometry. We focus on two different temperatures below and above the transition temperature $T_c$ which was previously associated with the apparition of a stress plateau in the flow curve. (i) At $T=37.0^\circ$C $<T_c$, the bulk flow remains homogeneous and Newtonian-like, although significant wall slip is measured at the rotor that can be linked to an inflexion point in the flow curve. (ii) At…
The phase behavior of asymmetrically interacting ABC star triblock copolymer melts is investigated by the self-consistent field theory (SCFT). Motivated by the experimental systems, in this study, we focus on the systems in which the Flory-Huggins interaction parameters satisfy $χ_{AC}>χ_{BC}\approx χ_{AB}$. Using various initialization strategies, a large number of periodic structures have been obtained in our calculations. A fourth-order pseudospectral algorithm combined with Anderson mixing method is used to compute the free energy of candidate structures carefully. The stability has been d…
We have studied the solubilization behaviour of tributylphosphate (TBP) in aqueous solutions of L64-Pluronics, using light and small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Varying the temperature and the oil-content, the system presents a non trivial phase behaviour. In particular, at 308K, a first solubilization followed by an emulsification failure and a resolubilization is found. We have measured the microstructure by SANS and characterized the microemulsion droplet core-size, corona-thickness, polydispersity, and interactions. It is shown that at low oil content, the system is made of small swol…
The effects of the length of each hydrophobic end block N_{st} and polymer concentration \barϕ_{P} on the transition broadness in amphiphilic ABA symmetric triblock copolymer solutions are studied using the self-consistent field lattice model. When the system is cooled, micelles are observed, i.e.,the homogenous solution (unimer)-micelle transition occurs. When N_{st} is increased, at fixed \barϕ_{P}, micelles occur at higher temperature, and the temperature-dependent range of micellar aggregation and half-width of specific heat peak for unimer-micelle transition increase monotonously. Compare…
We investigate the aggregation number and size distributions for inter-molecular clusters of amphiphilic diblock and triblock copolymers in poor solvent at very low concentrations. Diblocks and triblocks with hydrophilic ends are shown to possess narrow distributions corresponding to formation of monodispersed mesoglobules. Diblocks with hydrophobic ends are found to produce inter-cluster multimers due to bridging by the hydrophilic middle blocks, resulting in polydisperse distributions. Implications of these observations for preparation of monodispersed nanoparticles and, potentially, underst…
Using the self-consistent field approach, the effect of asymmetry of the coil block on the microphase separation is focused in ABC coil-rod-coil triblock copolymers. For different fractions of the rod block $f_{\text B}$, some stable structures are observed, i.e., lamellae, cylinders, gyroid, and core-shell hexagonal lattice, and the phase diagrams are constructed. The calculated results show that the effect of the coil block fraction $f_{\text A}$ is dependent on $f_{\text B}$. When $f_{\text B}=0.2$, the effect of asymmetry of the coil block is similar to that of the ABC flexible triblock co…
We introduce an entropic network model for copolymer elastomers based on the evolution of microscopic chain conformations during deformation. We show that the stress results from additive contributions due to chain stretch at the global as well as entanglement level. When these parameters are computed with molecular simulations, the theory quantitatively predicts the macroscopic stress response. The model requires only one elastic modulus to describe both physically crosslinked triblock networks and uncrosslinked homopolymers.
The phase behavior of the system of parallel rigid triblock copolymers is examined using the second-virial density functional theory. The triblock particle consists of two identical infinitely thin hard rods of finite lengths on the opposite ends of one central hard cylinder with nonzero length and diameter. Stability analyses and free energy calculations show that the system of parallel particles can form not only uniform nematic and smectic A phases, but a smectic-C phase too. The stability and structure of the tilted structure is controlled by only the diameter and the length of the central…
'Soft' patchy surfactant micelles have become an additional building tool in self-assembling systems. The triblock copolymer, Pluronic F108, forms spherical micelles in aqueous solutions upon heating leading to a simple phase diagram with a micellar crystalline solid at higher temperatures and concentrations. Here we report the strong influence of end-functionalising the chain ends either with an azide or azide-DNA complex on the systems' phase behaviour. We find that the azide(N3)- functionalisation renders the chain ends weakly hydrophobic at lower temperatures, causing them to self-assemble…
Using coarse-grained molecular-dynamics simulations, a generic styrene-(block)-butadiene-(block)-styrene (SBS) triblock copolymer under lamellar conformation is used in order to investigate the mutual entanglement evolution when a structure of alternating glassy (S)/rubbery (B) layers is submitted to an imposed deformation. By varying the amount of loop chains between each phase, i.e. noncrossing chains, it is possible to generate different types of S/B interface definitions. A specific boundary driven tensile strain protocol has been developed in order to mimic "real" experiments and measure …
We examined the kinetics of the transformation from the lamellar (LAM) to the hexagonally packed cylinder (HEX) phase for the triblock copolymer, polystyrene-b-poly (ethylene-co-butylene)-b-polystyrene (SEBS) in dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a selective solvent for polystyrene (PS), using time-resolved small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). We observe the HEX phase with the EB block in the cores at a lower temperature than the LAM phase due to the solvent selectivity of DBP for the PS block. Analysis of the SAXS data for a deep temperature quench well below the LAM-HEX transition shows that the trans…
Synperonic F-108 (generic name, 'pluronic') is a micelle forming triblock copolymer of type ABA, where A is polyethylene oxide (PEO) and B is polypropylene oxide (PPO). At high temperatures, the hydrophobicity of the PPO chains increase, and the pluronic molecules, when dissolved in an aqueous medium, self-associate into spherical micelles with dense PPO cores and hydrated PEO coronas. At appropriately high concentrations, these micelles arrange in a face centred cubic lattice to show inverse crystallization, with the samples exhibiting high-temperature crystalline and low-temperature fluidlik…
Molecular dynamics simulations have been employed to study the formation of a physical (thermoreversible) gel by amphiphilic A-B-A triblock copolymers in aqueous solution. In order to mimic the structure of hydrogel-forming polypeptides employed in experiments [W.A. Petka et al., Science 281, 389 (1998)], the endblocks of the polymer chains are modeled as hydrophobic rods representing the alpha-helical part of the polypeptides whereas the central B-block is hydrophilic and semi-flexible. We have determined structural properties, such as the hydrophobic cluster-size distribution function, the g…
We study the ternary Ohta-Kawasaki free energy that has been used to model triblock copolymer systems. Its one-dimensional global minimizers are conjectured to have cyclic patterns. However, some physical experiments and computer simulations found triblock copolymers forming noncyclic lamellar patterns. In this work, by comparing the free energies of the cyclic pattern and some noncyclic candidates, we show that the conjecture does not hold for some choices of parameters. Our results suggest that even in one dimension, the global minimizers may take on very different patterns in different para…
This paper reports the experimental determination of the growth exponents and activation enthalpies for the ordering process of standing cylinder-forming all-organic polystyrene-block-poly (methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) block copolymer (BCP) thin films as a function of the BCP degree of polymerization (N). The maximum growth exponent of 1/3 is observed for the smallest BCP at the border of the order disorder transition. Both the growth exponents and the activation enthalpies exponentially decrease with the BCP segregation strength (chi N) following the same path of the diffusivity.
A nonequilibrium molecular dynamics computer simulation on microsegregated solutions of symmetrical diblock copolymers is reported. As the polymer concentration increases, the system undergoes phase transitions in the following order: body centered cubic (BCC) micelles, hexagonal (HEX) cylinders, gyroid (GYR) bicontinuous networks, and lamellae (L), which are the same morphologies that have been reported for block copolymer melts. Structural classification is based on the patterns of the anisotropic static structure factor and characteristic 3-dimensional images. The systems in the BCC micella…
We generalize the earlier theory by Fredrickson [J. Rheol. v.38, 1045 (1994)] to study the orientational behaviour of the hexagonal phase of diblock copolymer melt subjected to steady shear flow. We use symmetry arguments to show that the orientational ordering in the hexagonal phase is a much weaker effect than in the lamellae. We predict the parallel orientation to be stable at low and the perpendicular orientation at high shear rates. Our analysis reproduces the experimental results by Tepe et al. [Macromolecules v.28, 3008 (1995)] and explains the difficulties in experimental observation o…
We extensively study the phase diagram of a diblock copolymer melt confined in a cylindrical nanopore using real-space self-consistent mean-field theory. We discover a rich variety of new two-dimensional equilibrium structures that have no analog in the unconfined system. These include non-hexagonally coordinated cylinder phases and structures intermediate between lamellae and cylinders. We map the stability regions and phase boundaries for all the structures we find. As the pore radius is decreased, the pore accommodates fewer cylindrical domains and structural transitions occur as cylinders …
We consider the coupling between an external electric field and dissociated ions embedded in anisotropic polarizable media such as block copolymers. We argue that the presence of such ions can induce strong morphological changes and even lead to a structural phase transition. We investigate, in particular, diblock copolymers in the body centered cubic (bcc) phase. In pure dielectric materials (no free charges), a dielectric breakdown is expected to occur for large enough electric fields, preempting any structural phase transition. On the other hand, dissociated ions can induce a phase transiti…
Co-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and nanostructured polymer matrix represents an intricate interplay of enthalpic or entropic forces. Particle size largely affects the phase behavior of the nanocomposite. Theoretical studies indicate that new morphologies would emerge when the particles become comparable to the soft matrix's size, but this has rarely been supported experimentally. By designing a multicomponent blend composed of NPs, block copolymer-based supramolecules, and small molecules, a 3-D ordered lattice beyond the native BCP's morphology was recently reported when the part…
We explore the relative stability of three possible orientations of cylinder-forming di-block copolymer on a sinusoidally corrugated substrate. The cylinders can be aligned either parallel to the substrate, with their long axis being oriented along or orthogonal to the corrugation trenches, or perpendicular to the substrate. Using self-consistent field theory, we investigate the influence of substrate roughness and surface preference on the phase transition between the three orientations. When the substrate preference, $u$, towards one of components is small, increasing the substrate roughness…
A series of amphiphilic LC block copolymers, in which the hydrophobic block is a smectic polymer poly(4-methoxyphenyl 4-(6-acryloyloxy-hexyloxy)-benzoate) (PA6ester1) and the hydrophilic block is polyethyleneglycol (PEG), were synthesized and characterized. The self-assembly of one of them in both the pure state and the dilute aqueous solution was investigated in detail. Nano-structures in the pure state were studied by SAXS and WAXS on samples aligned by a magnetic field. A hexagonal cylindrical micro-segregation phase was observed with a lattice distance of 11.2 nm. The PEG blocks are in the…
We compare two theoretical approaches to dielectric diblock copolymer melts in an external electric field. The first is a relatively simple analytic expansion in the relative copolymer concentration, and includes the full electrostatic contribution consistent with that expansion. It is valid close to the order-disorder transition point, the weak segregation limit. The second employs self-consistent field (SCF) theory and includes the full electrostatic contribution to the free energy at any copolymer segregation. It is more accurate but computationally more intensive. Motivated by recent exper…
Self-Consistent Field Theory is applied to a film of cylindrical-forming block copolymer subject to a surface field which tends to align the cylinders parallel to electrical plates, and to an external electric field tending to align them perpendicular to the plates. The Maxwell equations and self-consistent field equations are solved exactly, numerically, in real space. By comparing the free energies of different configurations, we show that for weak surface fields, the phase of cylinders parallel to the plates makes a direct transition to a phase in which the cylinders are aligned with the fi…
An epitaxial transition from a bicontinious double gyroid to a hexagonally packed cylinder structure induced by an external flow is simulated using real-space dynamical self-consistent field technique. In order to simulate the structural change correctly, we introduce a system size optimization technique by which emergence of artificial intermediate structures are suppressed. When a shear flow in [111] direction of the gyroid unit cell is imposed, a nucleation and growth of the cylinder domains is observed. We confirm that the generated cylindrical domains grow epitaxially to the original gyro…
The yet virtually unexplored class of soft colloidal rods with small aspect ratio is investigated and shown to exhibit a very rich phase and dynamic behavior, spanning from liquid to nearly melt state. Instead of nematic order, these short and soft nanocylinders alter their organization with increasing concentration from isotropic liquid with random orientation to one with preferred local orientation and eventually a multi-domain arrangement with local orientational order. The latter gives rise to a kinetically suppressed state akin to structural glass with detectable terminal relaxation, whic…
The aim of this paper is two-fold. First, via a phenomenological consideration I show that, equally with the conventional phases (body-centred cubic, hexagonal planar and lamellar), such non-conventional phases as simple cubic, face-centered cubic, well known double gyroid as well as some other phases could be stable in a vicinity of the critical point in the systems undergoing the order-disorder and order-order transition. A general phase diagram indicating the strength of so-called angle dependence of the forth vertex necessary for existence of these non-conventional phases is presented. Nex…
