We investigate the incidence of major mergers creating >10e11 Msun galaxies in present-day groups and clusters more massive than 2.5e13 Msun. We identify 38 pairs of massive galaxies with mutual tidal interaction signatures selected from >5000 galaxies with >5e10 Msun that reside in 845 such groups. We fit the images of each galaxy pair as the line-of-sight projection of symmetric models and identify mergers by the presence of residual asymmetries around each progenitor, such as off-center isophotes, broad tidal tails, and dynamical friction wakes. At the resolution and sensitivity of the SDSS, such mergers are found in 16% of high-mass, galaxy-galaxy pairs with magnitude differences of <1.5 and <30 kpc projected separations. We find that 90% of these mergers have nearly equal-mass progenitors with red-sequence colors and centrally-concentrated morphologies, the hallmarks of dissipationless merger simulations. Mergers at group centers are more common than between 2 satellites, but both are morphologically indistinguishable and we tentatively conclude that the latter are likely located at the dynamical centers of recently accreted subhalos. The frequency of central and satellite merging diminishes with group mass consistent with dynamical friction expectations. Based on reasonable assumptions, the centers of these massive halos are growing in stellar mass by 1-9% per Gyr, on average. Compared to all LRG-LRG mergers, we find a 2-9 times higher rate for their merging when restricted to these dense environments. Our results imply that the massive end of the galaxy population continues to evolve hierarchically at a measurable level, and that the centers of massive groups are the preferred environment for merger-driven galaxy assembly. Based on the catalog of merging galaxies in the Early Data Release (EDR) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the differences of star formation history between merging galaxies and field galaxies are studied statistically by means of three spectroscopic indicators the 4000-Å break strength, the Balmer absorption-line index, and the specific star formation rate. It is found that for early-type merging galaxies the interactions will not induce significant enhancement of the star-formation activity because of its stability and lack of cool gas. On the other hand, late-type merging galaxies alw…
We present a new catalog of merging galaxies obtained through an automated systematic search routine. The 1479 new pairs of merging galaxies were found in approximately 462 sq deg of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (SDSS EDR; Stoughton et al. 2002) photometric data, and the pair catalog is complete for galaxies in the magnitude range 16.0 <= g* <= 20. The selection algorithm, implementing a variation on the original Karachentsev (1972) criteria, proved to be very efficient and fast. Merging galaxies were selected such that the inter-galaxy separations were less than the sum of …
We discuss an ongoing study of the connection between galaxy merging/interaction and AGN activity, based on integral field spectroscopy. We focus on the search for AGN ionization in the central regions of mergers, previously not classified as AGNs. We present here the science case, the current status of the project, and plans for future observations.
We present a study of the connection between star-forming galaxies, AGN host galaxies, and normal early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using the SDSS DR5 and DR4plus data, we select our early-type galaxy sample in the color versus color-gradient space, and we classify the spectral types of the selected early-type galaxies into normal, star-forming, Seyfert, and LINER classes, using several spectral line flux ratios. We investigate the slope in the fundamental space for each class of early-type galaxies and find that there are obvious differences in the slopes of the fund…
Recent observations reveal detailed structures of mergers in galaxy clusters. Moving cold fronts could be identified as remnants of subclusters. They are believed to mark the late stage of a merging process. Dynamics, geometry and extension of the subclusters can be very different: Spherically shaped bodies with a radius of $\approx 20 kpc$ up to $\approx 400 kpc$ and Mach numbers between $\mathcal{M}\approx 0.4$ and $\mathcal{M}\approx 1.5$ are observed. In order to analyse the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) signal, we calculate the modified pressure profile for an ongoing merger.
Following the discovery of a black hole (BH) with a mass of 10^3-10^6 M(sun) in a starburst galaxy M82, we study formation of such a BH via successive merging of stellar-mass BHs within a star cluster. The merging has a runaway characteristic. This is because massive BHs sink into the cluster core and have a high number density, and because the merging probability is higher for more massive BHs. We use the Smoluchowski equation to study analytically the evolution of the BH mass distribution. Under favorable conditions, which are expected for some star clusters in starburst galaxies, the timesc…
We present results from the XMM-Newton observations of our ongoing program on merging clusters. To date three clusters have been observed, covering the temporal sequence from early to late stage mergers: A1750, A2065 and A3921. Using spatially-resolved spectroscopy of discrete regions, hardness ratio and temperature maps, we show that all three clusters display a complex temperature structure. In the case of A1750, a double cluster, we argue that the observed temperature structure is not only related to the ongoing merger but also to previous merger events. A2065 seems an excellent example of …
We study the role of major and minor mergers in the mass growth of luminous red galaxies. We present small-scale ($0.01<r<8\,\hMpc$) projected cross-correlation functions of $23043$ luminous early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) sample ($0.16<z<0.30$, $\MMi\approx -22.75\,\mag$) with all their companions in the SDSS imaging sample, split into color and luminosity subsamples with $\MMi<-18\,\mag$. We de-project the two-dimensional functions to obtain three-dimensional real-space LRG--galaxy cross-correlation functions for each companion subsample…
The merging cluster of galaxies A2255 is covered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) survey. In this paper we perform a morphological classification on the basis of the SDSS imaging and spectral data, and investigate the morphological dependence of the star formation rates (SFRs) for these member galaxies. As we expect, a tight correlation between the normalized SFR by stellar mass (SFR/M$_*$) and the H$α$ equivalent width is found for the late-type galaxies in A2255. The correlation of SFR/M$_*$ with the continuum break strength at 4000 Åis also confirmed. The SFR/M$_*$ - M$_*$ correlation…
We present a new sample of galaxy groups identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3. Following previous works we use the well tested friend-of-friend algorithm developed by Huchra & Geller which take into account the number density variation due to the apparent magnitude limit of the galaxy catalog. To improve the identification we implement a procedure to avoid the artificial merging of small systems in high density regions and then apply an iterative method to recompute the group centers position. As a result we obtain a new catalog with 10864 galaxy groups with at least four …
We present a statistical analysis of halo emission for a sample of 1047 edge-on disk galaxies imaged in five bands by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Stacking the homogeneously rescaled images of the galaxies, we can measure surface brightnesses as deep as mu_r~31 mag/arcsec^2. The results strongly support the almost ubiquitous presence of stellar halos around disk galaxies, whose spatial distribution is well described by a power-law $ρ\propto r^{-3}$, in a moderately flattened spheroid (c/a~0.6). The colour estimates in g-r and r-i, although uncertain, give a clear indication for extreme…
We present seeing-limited and adaptive optics (AO) images of the z = 1.786 radio galaxy 3C294 in the H and K' infrared bands obtained at Keck Observatory. The infrared emission of 3C294 is dominated by two distinct components separated by ~1" (9 kpc). The eastern knot contains an unresolved core that contributes ~4% of the K'-band light; we identify this core with the active nucleus. The western component is about 2.5 times brighter. The most plausible interpretation of the near-infrared morphology is an ongoing merger event, with the active nucleus located in the less massive of the two galax…
We report the discovery of SDSSJ115517.35+634622.0, a previously unknown gravitationally lensed quasar. The lens system exhibits two images of a $z = 2.89$ quasar, with an image separation of $1{\farcs}832 \pm 0.007$ . Near-IR imaging of the system reveals the presence of the lensing galaxy between the two quasar images. Based on absorption features seen in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectrum, we determine a lens galaxy redshift of $z = 0.1756$. The lens is rather unusual in that one of the quasar images is only $0{\farcs}22\pm0{\farcs}07$ ($\sim 0.1 R_{\rm eff}$) from the center of t…
We perform a maximum likelihood analysis of the cluster abundance measured in the SDSS using the maxBCG cluster finding algorithm. Our analysis is aimed at constraining the power spectrum normalization $σ_8$, and assumes flat cosmologies with a scale invariant spectrum, massless neutrinos, and CMB and supernova priors Omega_m*h^2=0.128+/-0.01 and h=0.72+/-0.05 respectively. Following the method described in the companion paper Rozo et al. 2007, we derive σ_8=0.92+/-0.10$ (1-sigma) after marginalizing over all major systematic uncertainties. We place strong lower limits on the normalization, si…
We study the morphology and star formation properties of 159 local luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) using multi-color images from Data Release 2 (DR2) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The LIRGs are selected from a cross-correlation analysis between the IRAS survey and SDSS. They are all brighter than 15.9 mag in the r-band and below redshift ~ 0.1, and so can be reliably classified morphologically. We find that the fractions of interacting/merging and spiral galaxies are ~ 48% and ~ 40% respectively. Our results complement and confirm the decline (increase) in the fraction of spiral (int…
We find clusters and superclusters of galaxies using the Data Release 1 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We determine the luminosity function of clusters and find that clusters in a high-density environment have a luminosity a factor of ~5 higher than in a low-density environment. We also study clusters and superclusters in numerical simulations. Simulated clusters in a high-density environment are also more massive than those in a low-density environment. Comparison of the density distribution at various epochs in simulations shows that in large low-density regions (voids) dynamical evolution…
We present preliminary Chandra results on z=0.2 clusters A665, A2163 and A2218, and a z=0.05 cluster A754. For A754, A665 and A2163, we have derived first high-resolution projected gas temperature maps. All three show strong spatial temperature variations in the inner r<0.5-1 Mpc regions, indicating ongoing mergers. The maps reveal a probable shock in front of a moving cluster core in A665, a rather complicated temperature distribution in the center of A2163, and possibly a merger of three subclusters in A754. At greater off-center distances, radial profiles for A2163 and A2218 show a temperat…
The GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (GASS) is a large targeted survey that started at Arecibo in March 2008. GASS is designed to measure the neutral hydrogen content of ~1000 massive galaxies (with stellar mass Mstar > 10^10 Msun) at redshift 0.025<z<0.05, uniformly selected from the SDSS spectroscopic and GALEX imaging surveys. Our selected mass range straddles the recently identified "transition mass" (Mstar ~3x10^10 Msun) above which galaxies show a marked decrease in their present to past-averaged star formation rates. GASS will produce the first statistically significant sample of massive "tran…
A new method for a simultaneous search for clusters of galaxies in X-ray photon maps and optical galaxy maps is described. The merging of X-ray and optical data improves the source identification so that a large amount of telescope time for spectroscopic follow-up can be saved. The method appears thus ideally suited for the analysis of the recently proposed wide-angle X-ray missions like DUO and ROSITA. As a first application, clusters are extracted from the 3rd version of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and the Early Date Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The time-consuming computation…
In this paper we present the three dimensional dynamics of the galaxy SDSS J101345.39+011613.66, selected for its unusually strong Balmer absorption lines (Wo(H-delta)=7.5A). Using the GMOS-South IFU in Nod & Shuffle mode we have mapped the continuum and optical absorption lines of this z=0.1055 field galaxy. This galaxy has a disturbed morphology, with a halo of diffuse material distributed asymmetrically toward the north. Using the [OII] emission line (Wo([OII])=4.1A) we find that the gas and hot OB stars are offset from the older stars in the system. The gas also has a spatially extended an…
Simulations of nearby (0.015 < z < 0.025) SDSS galaxies have been used to reproduce as accurately as possible the appearance that they would have on COSMOS ACS images if they had been observed at z ~ 0.7 and z ~ 1.2. By adding the SDSS galaxies to random locations in the COSMOS images, we simulate the effects of chance superpositions of high redshift galaxies with unrelated foreground or background objects. We have used these simulated images, together with those of real COSMOS galaxies at these same redshifts, to undertake a "blind" morphological classification of galaxies to identify those t…
We study the environment of active galaxies and compare it with that of star forming and normal galaxies. We extracted from the Fourth Data Release (DR4) of the Sloan Digitaly Sky Survey (SDSS) the galaxies in the redshift range 0.05 \le z \le 0.095 and with M(r) \le -20.0 (that is M* + 1.45). Emission line ratios and/or widths are used to separate Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) from Star-Forming Galaxies (SFGs); AGN are classified as Seyfert-1 and Seyfert-2 galaxies according to emission line widths. The environmental properties, as defined by a density parameter and the number of companions, a…
We present multi-wavelength observations of the brightest galaxies in four X-ray luminous groups at z~0.37 that will merge to form a cluster comparable in mass to Coma. Ordered by increasing stellar mass, the four brightest group galaxies (BGGs) present a time sequence where BGG-1, 2, and 3 are in merging systems and BGG-4 is a massive remnant [M(stars)=6.7x10^(11) Msun]. BGG-1 and 2 have bright, gravitationally bound companions and BGG-3 has two nuclei separated by only 2.5 kpc, thus merging at z<0.5 increases the BGG mass by >40% (merging timescale<2 Gyr) and V-band luminosity by ~0.4 mag. T…
Based on the earlier work of Gunn and McCrea we model the formation of globular clusters in merging galaxies. Neutral hydrogen observations of dwarf irregular galaxies as well as more luminous systems are used to provide the key parameters of the model. The observations indicate that clusters with the mass of globular clusters should still be forming today. The model is incorporated into a phenomenological picture of galaxy evolution making use of a simple chemical evolution model. These results are compared to recent observations of the metallicity distributions of F and G stars from a recent…
We present our optical multicolor photometry for the nearby cluster of galaxies Abell 2255 with 13 intermediate filters in the BATC system. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in the optical band for more than 7000 sources are achieved down to V ~ 20 in a field of 58' x 58' centered on this rich cluster. Abell 2255 has been recently observed by the SDSS. A method of combining the SDSS photometric data in five broad bands and the BATC SEDs is then explored. The application of the technique of photometric redshift shows that the combined SEDs with higher resolution could lead to a more accu…
We have obtained high spectral resolution (R = 45900) Fabry-Perot velocity maps of the Hickson Compact Group HCG 31 in order to revisit the important problem of the merger nature of the central object A+C and to derive the internal kinematics of the candidate tidal dwarf galaxies in this group. Our main findings are: (1) double kinematic components are present throughout the main body of A+C, which strongly suggests that this complex is an ongoing merger (2) regions $A2$ and E, to the east and south of complex A+C, present rotation patterns with velocity amplitudes of $\sim 25 km s^{-1}$ and t…
We present a result of searching for galaxy clusters that show an indication of global rotation using a spectroscopic sample of galaxies in SDSS and 2dFGRS. We have determined the member galaxies of 899 Abell clusters covered in SDSS and 2dFGRS using the redshift and the positional data of galaxies, and have estimated the ratio of the cluster rotation amplitude to the cluster velocity dispersion and the velocity gradient across the cluster. We have found 12 tentative rotating clusters that have large ratios of rotation amplitude to dispersion and large velocity gradients. We have determined th…
We present an analysis of a Chandra observation of Abell 2034. The cluster has multiple signatures of an ongoing merger, including a cold front and probable significant heating of the intracluster medium above its equilibrium temperature. We find no evidence for the large cooling rate previously determined for the cluster, and in fact find it to be roughly isothermal, though with numerous small-scale inhomogeneities, out to a radius of ~700 kpc. The cold front appears to be in the process of being disrupted by gas dynamic instability and perhaps by shock heating. We find weak evidence for Inve…
We compare the nonthermal emission from clusters of galaxies undergoing minor mergers (``accreting'' clusters) and major mergers (``merging'' clusters). For accreting clusters, the radial distribution of the nonthermal emission in the clusters is also calculated. The relativistic electrons, which are the origin of the nonthermal radiation through inverse Compton (IC) and synchrotron mission, are assumed to be accelerated at shocks produced by accretion or mergers. We estimate the typical accretion rate and merger probability according to a hierarchical clustering model. We show that the total …
We analyze a volume-limited sample of massive bulge-dominated galaxies with data from both the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite. The galaxies have central velocity dispersions greater than 100 km/s and stellar surface mass densities that lie above the value where galaxies transition from actively star forming to passive systems. The sample is limited to redshifts 0.03<z<0.07. At these distances, the SDSS spectra sample the light from the bulge-dominated central regions of the galaxies. The GALEX NUV data provide high sensitivity to low rates of globa…
We present the first phase in our ongoing work to use Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data to create separate white dwarf (WD) luminosity functions for two or more different mass ranges. In this paper, we determine the completeness of the SDSS spectroscopic white dwarf sample by comparing a proper-motion selected sample of WDs from SDSS imaging data with a large catalog of spectroscopically determined WDs. We derive a selection probability as a function of a single color (g-i) and apparent magnitude (g) that covers the range -1.0 < g-i < 0.2 and 15 < g < 19.5. We address the observed upturn in…
We combine GALEX near-UV photometry with a volume-limited sample of local (0.005<z<0.037) SDSS DR4 galaxies to examine the composition and the environmental dependencies of the optical and UV-optical colour-magnitude (C-M) diagrams. We find that ~30% of red sequence galaxies in the optical C-M diagram show signs of ongoing star-formation from their spectra having EW(Halpha)>2A. This contamination is greatest at faint magnitudes (Mr>-19) and in field regions where as many as three-quarters of red sequence galaxies are star-forming, and as such has important consequences for following the build-…
We present the results of a new spectroscopic and photometric survey of the central region of the galaxy cluster A3921 (z=0.094). We detect the presence of two dominant clumps of galaxies: a main cluster centred on the BCG (A3921-A), and a NW sub-cluster (A3921-B) hosting the second brightest cluster galaxy. The distorted morphology of the two sub-clusters suggests that they are interacting, while the velocity distribution of 104 confirmed cluster members does not reveal strong signatures of merging. By applying a two-body dynamical formalism to the two sub-clusters of A3921, and by comparing …
In this paper we consider a large sample of optically selected clusters, in order to elucidate the physical reasons for the existence of X-ray underluminous clusters. For this purpose we analyze the correlations of the X-ray and optical properties of a sample of 137 spectroscopically confirmed Abell clusters in the SDSS database. We search for the X-ray counterpart of each cluster in the ROSAT All Sky Survey. We find that 40% of our clusters have a marginal X-ray detection or remain undetected in X-rays. These clusters appear too X-ray faint on average for their velocity dispersion determined …
We present new results of our program to systematically search for strongly lensed galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging data. In this study six strong lens systems are presented which we have confirmed with follow-up spectroscopy and imaging using the 3.5m telescope at the Apache Point Observatory. Preliminary mass models indicate that the lenses are group-scale systems with velocity dispersions ranging from 466-878 km s^{-1} at z=0.17-0.45 which are strongly lensing source galaxies at z=0.4-1.4. Galaxy groups are a relatively new mass scale just beginning to be probed with …
We present a catalog of 799 clusters of galaxies in the redshift range z_est = 0.05 - 0.3 selected from ~400 deg^2 of early SDSS commissioning data along the celestial equator. The catalog is based on merging two independent selection methods -- a color-magnitude red-sequence maxBCG technique (B), and a Hybrid Matched-Filter method (H). The BH catalog includes clusters with richness Λ>= 40 (Matched-Filter) and N_gal >= 13 (maxBCG), corresponding to typical velocity dispersion of σ_v >~ 400 km s^{-1} and mass (within 0.6 h^{-1) Mpc radius) >~ 5*10^{13} h^{-1} M_sun. This threshold is below Abel…
We present here \chandra observations of the rich cluster of galaxies A2256. In addition to the known cool subcluster, a new structure was resolved 2$'$ east of the peak of the main cluster. Its position is roughtly at the center of a low-brightness radio halo. Spectral analysis shows that the "shoulder" has high iron abundance ($\sim$ 1). We suggest that this structure is either another merging component or an internal structure of the main cluster. The X-ray redshifts of several regions were measured. The results agree with the optical ones and suggest that the main cluster, the subcluster a…
We present a detailed investigation into the recent star formation histories of 5,697 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) based on the Hdelta (4101A) and [OII] (3727A) lines. LRGs are luminous (L>3L*), galaxies which have been selected to have photometric properties consistent with an old, passively evolving stellar population. For this study we utilise LRGs from the recently completed 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO survey (2SLAQ). Equivalent widths of the Hdelta and [OII] lines are measured and used to define three spectral types, those with only strong Hdelta absorption (k+a), those with strong [OII] in emis…
Traditional photometric redshift methods use only color information about the objects in question to estimate their redshifts. This paper introduces a new method utilizing colors, luminosity, surface brightness, and radial light profile to measure the redshifts of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We take a statistical approach: distributions of galaxies from the SDSS Large-Scale Structure (LSS; spectroscopic) sample are constructed at a range of redshifts, and target galaxies are compared to these distributions. An adaptive mesh is implemented to increase the percentage of the …
In this paper, the second in a series of two, we justify two important assumptions on which the result is based that in course of a galaxy merger the slingshot ejection of bound stars is sufficiently efficient to allow a supermassive black hole binary to merge. A steep cusp with a power law index of 2.5 to 3 is required which is as massive as the binary and surrounds the BHs when the binary becomes hard. This cusp is probably formed when both clusters, surrounding each black hole, merge and combine with the matter funneled into the center. We find this profile to be in agreement with observed …
The last 10-20 years has seen a profound shift in views of how the Galaxy's halo formed. The idea of a monolithic early collapse of a single system (Eggen, Lynden-Bell and Sandage 1962) has been challenged by observations at high redshift and by cosmological models of structure formation. These findings imply that we should see clear evidence of hierarchical formation processes in nearby galaxies. Recent studies of our Galaxy, made possible by large-scale CCD surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), have begun to reveal tantalizing evidence of substructure in the outer halo. We rev…
We study the formation and the evolution of galaxy groups in a critical universe, showing the importance of secondary infall for their dynamical evolution. Merging is only slightly accelerated if galaxies have massive halos, because the mass initially associated to the individual galaxies is soon tidally stripped. Stripping is particularly effective for infalling galaxies, which thus avoid merging. We find that, as a rule, merging is effectively terminated when infall becomes dominant. We look for compact groups in our ensemble of simulations, and compare their statistical properties with Hick…
