The generalization of the Gutzwiller approximation to inhomogeneous systems is considered, with extra spin-and-site-dependent fugacity factors included. It is found that the inclusion of fugacity factors reconciles the seemingly contradictory choices of Gutzwiller factors used in the literature. Moreover, from the derivation of the Gutzwiller factors, it is shown that the Gutzwiller approximation breaks the rotational symmetry of the trial wavefunctions, and that different components of the spin-spin interaction need to be renormalized differently under the approximation. Various schemes to restore the rotational symmetry are discussed and are compared with results from variational Monte-Carlo calculations for the two-dimensional square-lattice antiferromagnet. Results along different paths within the full parameter space, which corresponds to different choices of fugacity factors in the literature, are also compared.
Extended Hubbard model with renormalized Wannier wave functions in the correlated state III: Statistically consistent Gutzwiller approximation and the metallization of atomic solid hydrogen
We develop an extension of the Gutzwiller Approximation (GA) formalism that includes the effects of Coulomb interactions of arbitrary range (including density density, exchange, pair hopping and Coulomb assisted hopping terms). This formalism reduces to the ordinary GA formalism for the multi-band Hubbard models in the presence of only local interactions. This is accomplished by combining the 1/z expansion -- where z is the coordination number and only the leading order terms contribute in the limit of infinite dimensions -- with a P^2-I expansion, where P is the Gutzwiller projector. The meth…
In the first part of the paper, we study the stability of antiferromagnetic (AF), charge density wave (CDW), and superconducting (SC) states within the $t$-$J$-$U$-$V$ model of strongly correlated electrons by using the statistically consistent Gutzwiller approximation (SGA). We concentrate on the role of the intersite Coulomb interaction term $V$ in stabilizing the CDW phase. In particular, we show that the charge ordering appears only above a critical value of $V$ in a limited hole-doping range $δ$. The effect of the $V$ term on SC and AF phases is that a strong interaction suppresses SC, wh…
We develop the Gutzwiller approximation method to obtain the renormalized Hamiltonian of the SU(4) $t$-$J$ model with the corresponding renormalization factors. Subsequently, a mean-field theory is employed on the renormalized Hamiltonian of the model on the honeycomb lattice under the scenario of a cooperative condensation of carriers moving in the resonating valence bond state of flavors. In particular, we find that the extended $s$-wave superconducting state is more favorable than the $d\pm id$-wave superconducting state in the doping range close to quarter filling. The pairing states of th…
We employ density-functional theory (DFT) in the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and its extensions GGA+$U$ and GGA+Gutzwiller to calculate the magnetic exchange couplings between pairs of Mn ions substituting Cd in a CdTe crystal at very small doping. DFT(GGA) overestimates the exchange couplings by a factor of three because it underestimates the charge-transfer gap in Mn-doped II-VI semiconductors. Fixing the nearest-neighbor coupling $J_1$ to its experimental value in GGA+$U$, in GGA+Gutzwiller, or by a simple scaling of the DFT(GGA) results provides acceptable values for the excha…
