The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) constraints on string inspired ''brane inflation'' are investigated. Here, the inflaton field is interpreted as the distance between two branes placed in a flux-enriched background geometry and has a Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) kinetic term. Our method relies on an exact numerical integration of the inflationary power spectra coupled to a Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo exploration of the parameter space. This analysis is valid for any perturbative value of the string coupling constant and of the string length, and includes a phenomenological modelling of the reheating era to describe the post-inflationary evolution. It is found that the data favour a scenario where inflation stops by violation of the slow-roll conditions well before brane annihilation, rather than by tachyonic instability. Concerning the background geometry, it is established that log(v) > -10 at 95% confidence level (CL), where "v" is the dimensionless ratio of the five-dimensional sub-manifold at the base of the six-dimensional warped conifold geometry to the volume of the unit five-sphere. The reheating energy scale remains poorly constrained, Treh > 20 GeV at 95% CL, for an extreme equation of state (wreh ~ -1/3) only. Assuming the string length is known, the favoured values of the string coupling and of the Ramond-Ramond total background charge appear to be correlated. Finally, the stochastic regime (without and with volume effects) is studied using a perturbative treatment of the Langevin equation. The validity of such an approximate scheme is discussed and shown to be too limited for a full characterisation of the quantum effects.
With the WMAP data we can now begin to test realistic models of inflation involving multiple scalar fields. These naturally lead to correlated adiabatic and isocurvature (entropy) perturbations with a running spectral index. We present the first full (9 parameter) likelihood analysis of double inflation with WMAP data and find that despite the extra freedom, supersymmetric hybrid potentials are strongly constrained with less than 7% correlated isocurvature component allowed when standard priors are imposed on the cosomological parameters. As a result we also find that Akaike & Bayesian model s…
Noncommutative inflation is based upon the consideration of some effects of the space-time uncertainty principle motivated by ideas from string/M theory. The CMB anisotropies may carry a signature of this very early Universe correction from the space-time uncertainty principle and can be used to place constraints on the parameters of the noncommutative inflation model. In this paper we analyze the noncommutative chaotic inflation model by means of the WMAP three year results. We show that the noncommutative chaotic inflation model can produce a large negative running of spectral index within a…
In this paper, we revisit brane inflation models with the WMAP five-year results. The WMAP five-year data favor a red-tilted power spectrum of primordial fluctuations at the level of two standard deviations, which is the same as the WMAP three-year result qualitatively, but quantitatively the spectral index is slightly greater than the three-year value. This result can bring impacts on brane inflation models. According to the WMAP five-year data, we find that the KKLMMT model can survive at the level of one standard deviation, and the fine-tuning of the parameter $β$ can be alleviated to a cer…
Considerable and ongoing effort is made to identify promising scalar field candidates in string theory to drive a cosmological period of inflation. At stake is the possibility that fundamental string parameters could be encoded in observables such as the CMB perturbation spectrum. In this contribution, we hold a concrete model of string inflation (KKLMMT) up against WMAP3 and discuss the constraints obtained.
We use the three-year WMAP observations to determine the normalization of the matter power spectrum in inflationary cosmologies. In this context, the quantity of interest is not the normalization marginalized over all parameters, but rather the normalization as a function of the inflationary parameters n and r with marginalization over the remaining cosmological parameters. We compute this normalization and provide an accurate fitting function. The statistical uncertainty in the normalization is 3 percent, roughly half that achieved by COBE. We use the k-l relation for the standard cosmologica…
We consider constraints on inflation driven by a single, minimally coupled scalar field in the light of the WMAP5 dataset, as well as ACBAR and the SuperNova Legacy Survey. We use the Slow Roll Reconstruction algorithm to derive optimal constraints on the inflationary parameter space. The scale dependence in the slope of the scalar spectrum permitted by WMAP5 is large enough to lead to viable models where the small scale perturbations have a substantial amplitude when extrapolated to the end of inflation. We find that excluding parameter values which would cause the overproduction of primordia…
The CMB power spectra are studied for different families of single field new and chaotic inflation models in the effective field theory approach to inflation. We implement a systematic expansion in 1/N_e where N_e ~ 50 is the number of e-folds before the end of inflation. We study the dependence of the observables (n_s, r and dn_s/d\ln k) on the degree of the potential (2 n) and confront them to the WMAP3 and large scale structure data: this shows in general that fourth degree potentials (n=2) provide the best fit to the data; the window of consistency with the WMAP3 and LSS data narrows for g…
Inflation in a five-dimensional brane world model with two boundary branes is studied. We make use of the moduli space approximation whereby the low energy theory reduces to a four-dimensional biscalar-tensor gravity plus a minimally coupled scalar field. After a detailed analysis of the inflationary solutions, we derive the evolution equations of the linear perturbations separating the adiabatic mode from two entropy modes. We then examine the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra and show that their tilt depends on the scalar-tensor coupling constant. Finally, the induced CMB anisotropi…
We clarify inflaton models by considering them as effective field theories in the Ginzburg-Landau spirit. In this new approach, the precise form of the inflationary potential is constructed from the present WMAP data, and a useful scheme is prepared to confront with the forthcoming data. In this approach, the WMAP statement excluding the pure phi^4 potential implies the presence of an inflaton mass term at the scale m sim 10^{13}GeV. Chaotic, new and hybrid inflation is studied in an unified way. In all cases the inflaton potential takes the form V(phi) = m^2 M_{Pl}^2 v(phi/M_{Pl}), where all c…
The three-year data from WMAP are in stunning agreement with the simplest possible quadratic potential for chaotic inflation, as well as with new or symmetry-breaking inflation. We investigate the possibilities for incorporating these potentials within supergravity, particularly of the no-scale type that is motivated by string theory. Models with inflation driven by the matter sector may be constructed in no-scale supergravity, if the moduli are assumed to be stabilised by some higher-scale dynamics and at the expense of some fine-tuning. We discuss specific scenarios for stabilising the modul…
We study the single field slow-roll inflation models that better fit the available CMB and LSS data including the three years WMAP data: new inflation and hybrid inflation. We study them as effective field theories in the Ginsburg-Landau context: a trinomial potential turns out to be a simple and well motivated model. The compute the spectral index n_s of the adiabatic fluctuations, the ratio r of tensor to scalar fluctuations and the running index d n_s/dln k, derive explicit formulae and provide relevant plots. In new inflation, and for the three years WMAP central value n_s = 0.95, we predi…
We assay how inflationary models whose properties are dominated by the dynamics of a single scalar field are constrained by cosmic microwave background (CMB) data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). We classify inflationary models in a plane defined by the horizon-flow parameters. Our approach differs from that of the WMAP collaboration in that we analyze only WMAP data and take the spectral shapes from slow-roll inflation rather than power-law parameterizations of the spectra. The only other information we use is the measurement of $h$ from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) K…
In light of WMAP results, we examine the observational constraint on the P-term inflation. With the tunable parameter $f$, P-term inflation contains richer physics than D-term and F-term inflationary models. We find the logarithmic derivative spectral index with $n>1$ on large scales and $n<1$ on small scales in agreement to observation. We obtained a reasonable range for the choice of the gauge coupling constant $g$ in order to meet the requirements of WMAP observation and the expected number of the e-foldings. Although tuning $f$ and $g$ we can have larger values for the logarithmic derivati…
A model independent analysis shows that the running of the spectral index of the three year WMAP results can be nicely realized in noncommutative inflation. We also re-examine some concrete noncommutative inflation models. We find that a large tensor-scalar ratio is required, corresponding to a low number of e-folds before the end of inflation in some simple models.
WMAP three-year data favors a red power spectrum at the level of 2 standard deviations, which provides a stringent constraint on the inflation models. In this note we use this data to constrain brane inflation models and find that KKLMMT model can not fit WMAP+SDSS data at the level of 1 standard deviation and a fine-tuning, eight parts in thousand at least, is needed at the level of 2 standard deviation.
Single field inflationary models with a non-minimal kinetic term (also called k-inflationary models) can be characterised by the so-called sound flow functions, which complete the usual Hubble flow hierarchy. These parameters appear in the primordial power spectra of cosmological perturbations at leading order and, therefore, affect the resulting Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. Using the fifth year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP5) data, we derive the marginalised posterior probability distributions for both the sound and Hubble flow parameters. In contrast to the st…
The observational constraints on the primordial power spectrum have tightened considerably with the release of the first year analysis of the WMAP observations, especially when combined with the results from other CMB experiments and galaxy redshift surveys. These observations allow us to constrain the physics of cosmological inflation: (i) The data show that the Hubble distance is almost constant during inflation. While observable modes cross the Hubble scale, it changes by less than 3% during one e-folding: d(d_H)/dt < 0.032 at 2 sigma. The distance scale of inflation itself remains poorly c…
We confront quasi-exponential models of inflation with WMAP seven years dataset using Hamilton Jacobi formalism. With a phenomenological Hubble parameter, representing quasi exponential inflation, we develop the formalism and subject the analysis to confrontation with WMAP seven using the publicly available code CAMB. The observable parameters are found to fair extremely well with WMAP seven. We also obtain a ratio of tensor to scalar amplitudes which may be detectable in PLANCK.
We consider a supersymmetric hybrid inflation in the framework of the Randall-Sundrum type II Braneworld model. We drive an analytical expression for the scalar potential and find that the F-term dominates hybrid inflation process. We show that for some value of Brane tension we can eliminate the fine tuning problem related to coupling constant k of the potential: We also calculate all known spectrum inflation parameters and show that observational bounds from WMAP5, BAO and SN observations are satisfied.
We consider a Chaplygin gas model with an exponential potential in framework of braneworld inflation. We apply the slow-roll approximation in the high-energy limit to derive various inflationary spectrum perturbation parameters. We show that the inflation observables depend only on the e-folding number N and the final value of the slow-roll parameter e(end). Whereas for small running of the scalar spectral index dns/dlnk, the inflation observables are in good agreement with recent WMAP7 data.
We are interested on studing various inflationary spectrum perturbation parameters in the context of the Randall-Sandrum type 2 Braneworld model. We consider in particular three types of potentials. We apply the slow-roll approximation in the high energy limit to constraint the parameter potentials by confronting our results to recent WMAP7 observations. We show that, for some values of the e-folding number N; the monomial potential provides the best fit results to observations data.
We study the K-Inflation models where the inflaton field has non-canonical kinetic term. In particular, we consider the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) form for the kinetic energy of the inflaton field. We consider quadratic and quartic potentials as well as the potential for the natural inflation. We use a modified version of the MODECODE (proposed by Mortonson et al.) to calculate the power spectrum of the primordial perturbations generated by the inflaton field and subsequently use the WMAP7 results to constrain the models. Interestingly with DBI type kinetic term, lesser gravity waves are produced…
We compare the simplest realistic brane inflationary model to recent cosmological data, including WMAP 3-year cosmic microwave background (CMB) results, Sloan Digital Sky Survey luminous red galaxies (SDSS LRG) power spectrum data and Supernovae Legacy Survey (SNLS) Type 1a supernovae distance measures. Here, the inflaton is simply the position of a $D3$-brane which is moving towards a $\bar{D}3$-brane sitting at the bottom of a throat (a warped, deformed conifold) in the flux compactified bulk in Type IIB string theory. The analysis includes both the usual slow-roll scenario and the Dirac-Bor…
We clarify classical inflaton models by considering them as effective field theories `a la Ginzburg-Landau. In this approach, the WMAP statement excluding the pure phi^4 potential implies the presence of an inflaton mass term at the scale m ~ 10^{13}GeV.Chaotic, new and hybrid inflation models are studied in an unified manner. In all cases the inflaton potential takes the form V(phi)=m^2 M_{Pl}^2 v(phi/M_{Pl}), where all coefficients in v(varphi) are of order one.If such potential corresponds to supersymmetry breaking, the susy scale is sqrt{m M_{Pl}}~10^{16}GeV which coincides with the GUT sca…
In this paper, we investigate the noncommutative KKLMMT D3/anti-D3 brane inflation scenario in detail. Incorporation of the brane inflation scenario and the noncommutative inflation scenario can nicely explain the large negative running of the spectral index as indicated by WMAP three-year data and can significantly release the fine-tuning for the parameter $β$. Using the WMAP three year results (blue-tilted spectral index with large negative running), we explore the parameter space and give the constraints and predictions for the inflationary parameters and cosmological observables in this sc…
We perform a MCMC (Monte Carlo Markov Chains) analysis of the available CMB and LSS data (including the three years WMAP data) with single field slow-roll new inflation and chaotic inflation models. We do this within our approach to inflation as an effective field theory in the GinsburgLandau spirit with fourth degree trinomial potentials in the inflaton field phi.We derive explicit formu- lae and study in detail the spectral index ns of the adiabatic fluctuations the ratio r of tensor to scalar fluctuations and the running index dn_s/dln k. We use these analytic formulas as hard constraints o…
Inter alia, the high precision WMAP data on Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation marginally indicate that the universe has positively curved (and hence spherical) spatial sections. In this paper, we take this data seriously and consider some of the consequences for the background dynamics. In particular, we show that this implies a limit to the number of e-foldings that could have taken place in the inflationary epoch; however this limit is consistent with some inflationary models that solve all the usual cosmological problems and are consistent with standard structure formation theory.
We introduce a new method for applying an inflationary prior to a cosmological dataset that includes relations between observables at arbitrary order in the slow roll expansion. The process is based on the inflationary flow equations, and the slow roll parameters appear explicitly in the cosmological parameter set. We contrast our method to other ways of imposing an inflationary prior on a cosmological dataset, and argue that this method is ideal for use with heterogeneous datasets. In particular, it would be well suited to exploiting any direct detection of fundamental tensor modes by a BBO-s…
It was pointed out that brane-anti-brane inflation without warped geometry is not viable due to compactification effects (in the simplified scenario where the inflaton is decoupled from the compactification moduli). We show that the inflationary scenario with branes at a small angle in this simplified scenario remains viable. We also point out that brane-anti-brane inflation may still be viable under some special conditions. We also discuss a way to treat potentials in compact spaces that should be useful in the analysis of more realistic brane inflationary scenarios.
We study the constraints on the inflationary parameter space derived from the 3 year WMAP dataset using ``slow roll reconstruction'', using the SDSS galaxy power spectrum to gain further leverage where appropriate. This approach inserts the inflationary slow roll parameters directly into a Monte Carlo Markov chain estimate of the cosmological parameters, and uses the inflationary flow hierarchy to compute the parameters' scale-dependence. We work with the first three parameters (epsilon, eta and xi) and pay close attention to the possibility that the 3 year WMAP dataset contains evidence for a…
Detailed analyses of the WMAP data indicate possible oscillatory features in the primordial curvature perturbation, which moreover appears to be suppressed beyond the present Hubble radius. Such deviations from the usual inflationary expectation of an approximately Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum are expected in the supergravity-based 'multiple inflation' model wherein phase transitions during inflation induce sudden changes in the mass of the inflaton, thus interrupting its slow-roll. In a previous paper we calculated the resulting curvature perturbation and showed how the oscillations arise. Her…
We reanalyze brane inflation with brane-brane interactions at an angle, which include the special case of brane-anti-brane interaction. If nature is described by a stringy realization of the brane world scenario today (with arbitrary compactification), and if some additional branes were present in the early universe, we find that an inflationary epoch is generically quite natural, ending with a big bang when the last branes collide. In an interesting brane inflationary scenario suggested by generic string model-building, we use the density perturbation observed in the cosmic microwave backgrou…
The implications of the WMAP (Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe) third year data for inflation are investigated using both the slow-roll approximation and an exact numerical integration of the inflationary power spectra including a phenomenological modelling of the reheating era. At slow-roll leading order, the constraints epsilon_1 < 0.022 and -0.07 < epsilon_2 < 0.07 are obtained at 95% CL (Confidence Level) implying a tensor-to-scalar ratio r_10 < 0.21 and a Hubble parameter during inflation H/Mpl < 1.3 x 10^(-5). At next-to-leading order, a tendency for epsilon_3 > 0 is observed. With r…
Cosmological inflation models with modifications to include recent cosmological observations has been an active area of research after WMAP 3 results, which have given us information about the composition of dark matter, normal matter and dark energy and the anisotropy at the 300,000 years horizon with high precision. We work on inflation models of Guth and Linde and modify them by introducing a doublet scalar field to give normal matter particles and their supersymmetric partners which result in normal and dark matter of our universe. We include the cosmological constant term as the vaccuum e…
An impressed feature of inflation on warped Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) brane is that the inflationary phase exits spontaneously for a scalar inflaton field with exponential potential, which presents a graceful exit mechanism for the inflation. But its reheating mechanism leaves open. We investigate the curvaton reheating in inflation on warped DGP brane model. The reheating may occur in effctively 5 dimensional or 4 dimensional stage. We study the permitted parameter space of the curvaton field in detail. We demonstrate how the inflation model of the warped DGP brane is improved by the curv…
We demonstrate that the initial conditions for inflation are met when D5 and \bar{D}5 branes annihilate. This scenario uses Sen's conjecture that a co-dimension two vortex forms on the worldvolume of the annihilated 5-brane system. Analogous to a "Big Bang", when the five branes annihilate, a vortex localized on a 3-brane forms and its false vacuum energy generates an inflationy space-time. We also provide a natural mechanism for ending inflation via the motion of the vortex in the bulk due to its extrinsic curvature. We also suggest a consistent way to end inflation and localize matter on our…
String theory gives rise to various mechanisms to generate primordial inflation, of which ``brane inflation'' is one of the most widely considered. In this scenario, inflation takes place while two branes are approaching each other, and the modulus field representing the separation between the branes plays the role of the inflaton field. We study the phase space of initial conditions which can lead to a sufficiently long period of cosmological inflation, and find that taking into account the possibility of nonvanishing initial momentum can significantly change the degree of fine tuning of the …
Recent analysis of the WMAP three year data suggests $f_{NL}^{local}\simeq86.8$ in the WMAP convention. It is necessary to make sure whether general single field inflation can produce a large positive $f_{NL}$ before turning to other scenarios. We give some examples to generate a large positive $f_{NL}^{equil}$ in general single field inflation. Our models are different from ghost inflation. Due to the appearance of non-conventional kinetic terms, $f_{NL}^{equil}\gg1$ can be realized in single field inflation.
Inflationary cosmology is developed in the second Randall-Sundrum braneworld scenario, where the accelerated expansion arises through potentials that are too steep to drive inflation in conventional cosmology. A relationship between the scalar and tensor perturbation spectra is derived that is independent of both the inflaton potential and the brane tension. It is found that a single field with an inverse power law potential can act as both the inflaton and the quintessence field for suitable values of the brane tension.
We consider cosmological inflation driven by the rolling tachyon in the context of the braneworld scenario. We show that sufficient inflation consistent with the observational constraints can be achieved for well defined upper limits on the five-dimensional mass scale, string mass scale and the string coupling for the bosonic string.
Towards the end of the brane inflationary epoch in the brane world, cosmic strings (but not texture, domain walls or monopoles) are copiously produced during brane collision. These cosmic strings are D$p$-branes with $(p-1)$ dimensions compactified. We elaborate on this prediction of the superstring theory description of the brane world. Using the data on the temperature anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background, we estimate the cosmic string tension $μ$ to be around $G μ\simeq 10^{-7}$. This in turn implies that the anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background comes mostly from inflation…
We investigate a new way of realizing a period of cosmological inflation in the context of brane gas cosmology. It is argued that a gas of co-dimension one branes, out of thermal equilibrium with the rest of the matter, has an equation of state which can - after stabilization of the dilaton - lead to power-law inflation of the bulk. The most promising implementation of this mechanism might be in Type IIB superstring theory, with inflation of the three large spatial dimensions triggered by ``stabilized embedded 2-branes''. Possible applications and problems with this proposal are discussed.
The brane cosmology has invoked new challenges to the usual Big Bang cosmology. In this paper we present a brief account on thermal history of the post-inflationary brane cosmology. We have realized that it is not obvious that the post-inflationary brane cosmology would always deviate from the standard Big Bang cosmology. However, if it deviates some stringent conditions on the brane tension are to be satisfied. In this regard we study various implications on gravitino production and its abundance. We discuss Affleck-Dine mechanism for baryogenesis and make some comments on moduli and dilaton …
In a class of recently proposed models, the early universe is strongly coupled and described holographically by a three-dimensional, weakly coupled, super-renormalizable quantum field theory. This scenario leads to a power spectrum of scalar perturbations that differs from the usual empirical LCDM form and the predictions of generic models of single field, slow roll inflation. This spectrum is characterized by two parameters: an amplitude, and a parameter g related to the coupling constant of the dual theory. We estimate these parameters, using WMAP and other astrophysical data. We compute Bay…
We demonstrate that there exists an inflationary solution on the positive tension brane in the Randall-Sundrum scenario. Inflation is driven by a slow-rolling scalar field on the brane and is achieved within the perturbative limit of the radion field. We find that inflation on the positive tension brane results in a slight increase in the separation between the two branes. However, we show that the slow-roll inflation is not possible on the negative tension brane.
Even though Planck data released in 2013 (P13) is not compatible with Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization (B2) and some local cosmological observations, including Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) samples and $H_0$ prior from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) etc, Wilkinson Microwaves Anisotropy Probe 9-year data (W9) is consistent with all of them in the base six-parameter $Λ$CDM+tensor cosmology quite well. In this letter, we adopt the combinations of B2+W9 and B2+W9+SNLS+BAO+HST to constrain the cosmological parameters in the base six-parameter $Λ$CDM+tensor model with $n_t=-r/8…
We study tachyon field inflation in the light of the Planck+WMAP+BICEP2+BAO joint data. While the minimally coupled tachyon field inflation is consistent with the Planck2013 data, it is not confirmed by the Planck+WMAP+BICEP2+BAO dataset. However, a nonminimally coupled tachyon field inflation is consistent with this joint dataset.
We study inflation and reheating in models for the brane universe, considering hybrid brane inflation without tachyon condensation. We expect that some fields that are localized on different branes interact with O(1) coupling when branes are on top of each other, while the interaction vanishes when branes are separated at a distance. If the interaction is needed to avoid spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry on the brane, our idea for hybrid brane inflation works. In our model, when branes are far apart, supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by the fields on a brane, which induces inflation. T…
Chaotic inflation on the brane is considered in the context of stochastic inflation. It is found that there is a regime in which eternal inflation on the brane takes place. The corresponding probability distributions are found in certain cases. The stationary probability distribution over a comoving volume and the creation probability of a de Sitter braneworld yield the same exponential behaviour. Finally, nonperturbative effects are briefly discussed.
We consider non-tachyonic hybrid inflation in the context of the braneworld cosmology. When one considers models for brane inflation, hybrid inflation is a natural consequence of the tachyon condensation if it appears at the end of inflation. In this case, however, reheating is a difficult problem due to the peculiar properties of the tachyon. In this paper we show some models for brane inflation where a new type of hybrid inflation is realized due to the localized matter fields. The obvious advantage of our scenario is successful reheating, which is due to the potential that is localized on t…
Given the fantastic experimental effort, it is important to thoroughly explore the signature space of inflationary models. The fact that higher derivative operators do not renormalize lower derivative ones allows us to find a large class of technically natural single-clock inflationary models where, in the context of the Effective Field Theory of Inflation, the leading interactions have many derivatives. We systematically explore the 3-point function induced by these models and their overlap with the standard equilateral and orthogonal templates. We find that in order to satisfactorily cover t…
We study the phase space of initial conditions for brane inflation, and find that including the effects of the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) kinetic term dramatically improves previous estimates on the amount of fine tuning of initial conditions necessary for inflation, even for models dominated by slow roll. Two effects turn out to be important for the phase space analysis: restrictions on the total available phase space due to UV effects in brane inflation, and the extension of the inflationary attractor to the DBI inflationary regime. We compare the amount of initial conditions fine tuning requir…
We study cosmological defect formation after brane inflation. The cosmological defects are corresponding to the branes that have less than three spacial dimensions in the uncompactified spacetime. Contrary to the previous arguments, production of monopoles and domain walls are not always negligible. Monopoles and domain walls are formed by the branes extended between mother branes.
In this paper, we show that eternal inflation of the random walk type is generically absent in the brane inflationary scenario. Depending on how the brane inflationary universe originated, eternal inflation of the false vacuum type is still quite possible. Since the inflaton is the position of the D3-brane relative to the anti-D3-brane inside the compactified bulk with finite size, its value is bounded. In DBI inflation, the warped space also restricts the amplitude of the scalar fluctuation. These upper bounds impose strong constraints on the possibility of eternal inflation. We find that ete…
Inspired by the Randall-Sundrum brane-world scenario, we investigate the possibility of brane-world inflation driven not by an inflaton field on the brane, but by a bulk, dilaton-like gravitational field. As a toy model for the dilaton-like gravitational field, we consider a minimally coupled massive scalar field in the bulk 5-dimensional spacetime, and look for a perturbative solution in the anti-de Sitter (AdS) background. For an adequate range of the scalar field mass, we find a unique solution that has non-trivial dependence on the 5th dimensional coordinate and that induces slow-roll infl…
The scenario of brane inflation without using the conventional slow-roll approximations has been investigated. Based on the mechanism of generating the curvature perturbations at the end of inflation, a new brane inflation paradigm was developed. The conditions for making a sufficiently large enough number of e-foldings and for generating the curvature perturbations without producing dangerous relics were also examined. Benefits of our scenario are subsequently discussed in detail.
At energies higher than the brane tension, the dynamics of a scalar field rolling down a potential are modified relative to the predictions of General Relativity. The modifications imply, among other things, that steeper potentials can be used to drive an epoch of slow--roll inflation. We investigate the evolution of entropy and adiabatic modes during inflation driven by two scalar fields confined on the brane. We show that the amount of entropy perturbations produced during inflation is suppressed compared to the predictions made by General Relativity. As a consequence, the initial conditions…
We propose a new scenario of Affleck-dine baryogenesis in the context of theories with large extra dimensions. In this paper we consider baryogenesis after thermal brane inflation and show how our mechanism works. We specifically consider models in which supersymmetry is broken at the distant brane.
The curvaton was introduced recently as a distinct inflationary mechanism for generating adiabatic density perturbations. Implicit in that scenario is that the curvaton offers a new mechanism for reheating after inflation, as it is a form of energy density not diluted by the inflationary expansion. We consider curvaton reheating in the context of a braneworld inflation model, {\em steep inflation}, which features a novel use of the braneworld to give a new mechanism for ending inflation. The original steep inflation model featured reheating by gravitational particle production, but the ineffic…
