The universality of the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relations has been under discussion since metallicity effects have been assumed to play a role in the value of the intercept and, more recently, of the slope of these relations. The goal of the present study is to calibrate the Galactic PL relations in various photometric bands (from B to K) and to compare the results to the well-established PL relations in the LMC. We use a set of 59 calibrating stars, the distances of which are measured using five different distance indicators: Hubble Space Telescope and revised Hipparcos parallaxes, infrared surface brightness and interferometric Baade-Wesselink parallaxes, and classical Zero-Age-Main-Sequence-fitting parallaxes for Cepheids belonging to open clusters or OB stars associations. A detailed discussion of absorption corrections and projection factor to be used is given. We find no significant difference in the slopes of the PL relations between LMC and our Galaxy. We conclude that the Cepheid PL relations have universal slopes in all photometric bands, not depending on the galaxy under study (at least for LMC and Milky Way). The possible zero-point variation with metal content is not discussed in the present work, but an upper limit of 18.50 for the LMC distance modulus can be deduced from our data.
We present V and I_c CCD photometry for 40 LMC Cepheids at 1 to 3 epochs. This represents a significant increase in the number of LMC Cepheids with $I$-band data, and, as we show, is a useful addition to the sample which can be used to calibrate the period--luminosity relations in these important bands.
In this paper we present a catalogue of the Fourier parameters for the light curves of Large Magellanic Cloud fundamental mode Cepheids in the OGLE database. These Fourier parameters are obtained with a simulated annealing method. The photometric data are mainly fit with 4th to 8th-order Fourier expansion, though some of the long period Cepheids require up to a 12th-order fit to the data.
We selected cepheids from the OGLE database for the Magellanic Clouds in the period range 10^{1.1} < P < 10^{1.4} days. There were 33 objects in the LMC and 35 in the SMC. We find that the median amplitude of cepheids in the LMC is 18% larger than in the SMC, a 4 sigma effect. This implies that the period - flux amplitude relation is not universal, and cannot be used to measure distances accurately.
We have applied the infrared surface brightness (ISB) technique to derive distances to 13 Cepheid variables in the LMC which have periods from 3-42 days. The corresponding absolute magnitudes define PL relations in VIWJK bands which agree exceedingly well with the corresponding Milky Way relations obtained from the same technique, and are in significant disagreement with the observed LMC Cepheid PL relations, by OGLE-II and Persson et al., in these bands. Our data uncover a systematic error in the p-factor law which transforms Cepheid radial velocities into pulsational velocities. We correct t…
The period-luminosity (PL) relation for Galactic Cepheids is derived with recent independent distance measurements taken from literature. Our PL relation confirms the work of Tammann et al. (2003), which showed that the Galactic Cepheids follow a different PL relation to their LMC counterparts. Our results also show that the slope of the Galactic PL relation is inconsistent with the LMC slope with more than 95% confidence. The details of this work can be found in Ngeow & Kanbur (2004).
Distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is determined using the Cepheid variables in the LMC. We combine the individual LMC Cepheid distances obtained from the infrared surface brightness method and a dataset with a large number of LMC Cepheids. Using the standard least squares method, the LMC distance modulus can be found from the ZP offsets of these two samples. We have adopted both a linear P-L relation and a ``broken'' P-L relation in our calculations. The resulting LMC distance moduli are 18.48+-0.03 mag and 18.49+-0.04 mag (random error only), respectively, which are consistent to t…
MACHO Project photometry of 45 LMC FO/SO beat Cepheids which pulsate in the first and second overtone (FO and SOo, respectively) has been analysed to determine the lightcurve characteristics for the SO mode of Cepheid pulsation. We predict that singly-periodic SO Cepheids will have nearly sinusoidal lightcurves; that we will only be able to discern SO Cepheids from fundamental (F) and (FO) Cepheids for P <= 1.4 days; and that the SO distribution will overlap the short-period edge of the LMC FO Cepheid period-luminosity relation (when both are plotted as a function of photometric period). We al…
We have used the infrared surface brightness technique to obtain a new absolute calibration of the Cepheid PL relation in optical and near-infrared bands from improved data on Galactic stars. The infrared surface brightness distances to the Galactic variables are consistent with direct interferometric Cepheid distance measurements, and with the PL calibration coming from Hipparcos parallaxes of nearby Cepheids, but are more accurate than these determinations. We find that in all bands, the Galactic Cepheid PL relation appears to be slightly, but significantly steeper than the corresponding rel…
We present new near-IR light curves for six Cepheids in the young blue LMC cluster NGC1866 as well as high precision radial velocity curves for ten Cepheids in NGC1866 and two in NGC2031. For the six Cepheids in NGC1866 with new J and K light curves we determine distances and absolute magnitudes by applying the near-IR surface brightness method. We find that the formal error estimates on the derived distances are underestimated by about a factor of two. We find excellent agreement between the absolute magnitudes for the low metallicity LMC Cepheids with the Period-Luminosity (P-L) relation det…
We report on a first application of the infrared surface brightness technique on a Cepheid in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the variable HV 12198 in the young globular cluster NGC 1866. From this one star, we determine a distance modulus of 18.42 +- 0.10 (random and systematic uncertainty) to the cluster. When the results on further member Cepheids in NGC 1866 become available, we expect to derive the distance to the LMC with a +- 3-4 percent accuracy, including systematic errors, from this technique.
The distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the first step on the determination of the cosmic distance scale. In this paper it is obtained from a new calibration of the classical Cepheid Period-Luminosity (PL) relation. Our new calibration is obtained by applying the LM method -- a parametric method designed to obtain luminosity calibrations from astrometric information -- to the Hipparcos data for Classical Cepheids. The resulting distance modulus is $18.35^{m}\pm 0.13$.
We present Period-Luminosity-Color and Period-Luminosity relations of classical Cepheids constructed for about 1280 Cepheids from the LMC and 2140 from the SMC. High quality BVI observations (120-360 epochs in the I-band and 15-40 in the BV-bands) were collected during the OGLE-II microlensing experiment. The I-band diagrams of the LMC show very small scatter, σ=0.074 mag, indicating that Cepheid variables can potentially be a very good standard candle. We compare relations of fundamental mode Cepheids from the LMC and SMC and we do not find significant differences of slopes of the Period-Lumi…
Photometric data for 593 Cepheids in the LMC, measured by Udalski et al. in the OGLE survey, augmented by 92 longer period Cepheids from other sources, are analyzed for the P-C and P-L relations, and for the variations of amplitude, light curve shape, and period across the instability strip at constant absolute magnitude. Both the P-C and P-L relations have different slopes for periods smaller and larger than 10 days. The break at 10 days is also seen in the period-amplitude relations, and the compound Fourier combinations of R_21 and Phi_21 introduced by Simon and Lee. The LMC Cepheids are bl…
We report BV(RI)c CCD photometric data for a group of seven Cepheid variables in the young, rich cluster NGC 1866 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The photometry was obtained as part of a program to determine accurate distances to these Cepheids by means of the infrared surface brightness technique, and to improve the LMC Cepheid database for constructing Cepheid PL and PLC relations. Using the new data together with data from the literature, we have determined improved periods for all variables. For five fundamental mode pulsators, the light curves are now of excellent quality and will lead to …
The approximately 1500 Cepheid variables in 22 LMC fields of the MACHO Project survey have been calibrated and analysed. In this paper, we report improved period ratios for a total of 73 beat Cepheids and provide a first look at the Fourier decomposition parameters for both singly- and doubly-periodic Cepheids. We also note an unusual amplitude-changing pulsator.
The LM method, designed to exploit the Hipparcos data to obtain luminosity calibrations, is applied to derive luminosity calibrations for RR Lyrae and classical Cepheids. From these calibrations the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is estimated. The distance moduli provided by the two calibrations are in good agreement, giving a value of 18.3m, while several previous calibrations using Hipparcos data provided inconsistent results between both types of stars. This result suggests that the Hubble constant should have a value of H_0 = 79 km s-1 Mpc-1.
We report the discovery of 45 beat Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using the MACHO Project photometry database. The variables which are pulsating simultaneously in two radial modes are shown to break cleanly into two period-ratio groups, providing the first unambiguous evidence that the second overtone is indeed excited in real Cepheids. Thirty stars are beating in the fundamental and first overtone mode (F/1H, with a period ratio in the neighborhood of 0.72), and fifteen stars are beating in the first and second overtone (1H/2H, with a period ratio near 0.80). The F/1H period rat…
We present the first mid-infrared Period-Luminosity (PL) relations for Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids. Single-epoch observations of 70 Cepheids were extracted from Spitzer IRAC observations at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 microns, serendipitously obtained during the SAGE (Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution) imaging survey of the LMC. All four mid-infrared PL relations have nearly identical slopes over the period range 6 - 88 days, with a small scatter of only +/-0.16 mag independent of period for all four of these wavelengths. We emphasize that differential reddening is not contribut…
In this paper, we will review major new results regarding classical Cepheids, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Specifically, we discuss recent work regarding multimode Cepheids and describe new observations of a W Vir star (HV 5756) and a Cepheid which are each in eclipsing binary systems. An additional interesting pulsating supergiant in an eclipsing system is also identified. Ephemerides for eclipses for the three systems are provided.
We report the discovery of RV Tauri stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. In light and colour curve behaviour, the RV Tauri stars appear to be a direct extension of the type II Cepheids to longer periods. A single period- luminosity-colour relationship is seen to describe both the type II Cepheids and the RV Tauri stars in the LMC. We derive the relation: $V_{\circ} = 17.89 (\pm 0.20) - 2.95 (\pm 0.12) \log_{10}P + 5.49 (\pm 0.35) \bar{(V-R)_{\circ}}$, valid for type II Cepheids and RV Tauri stars in the period range $0.9 < \log_{10}P < 1.75$. Assuming a distance modulus to the Large Magellanic…
We have used the infrared Barnes-Evans surface brightness technique to derive the radii and distances of 34 Galactic Cepheid variables. Radius and distance results obtained from both versions of the technique are in excellent agreement. The radii of 28 variables are used to determine the period-radius relation. This relation is found to have a smaller dispersion than in previous studies, and is identical to the period-radius relation found by Laney & Stobie from a completely independent method, a fact which provides persuasive evidence that the Cepheid period-radius relation is now determined …
In this paper we analyze the behavior of Galactic, LMC and SMC Cepheids in terms of period-color (PC) and amplitude-color (AC) diagrams at the phases of maximum, mean and minimum light. We find very different behavior between Galactic and Magellanic Cloud Cepheids. Motivated by the recent report of a break in LMC PC relations at 10 days (Tammann et al. 2002), we use the F-statistical test to examine the PC relations at mean light in these three galaxies. The results of the F-test support the existence of the a break in the LMC PC(mean) relation, but not in the Galactic or SMC PC(mean) relation…
In this paper, we recalibrate the Cepheid distance to some nearby galaxies observed by the HST Key Project (KP) and the Sandage-Tammann-Saha (STS) group. We use much of the KP methodology in our analysis but apply new techniques, based on Fourier methods to estimate the mean magnitudes to published Cepheid data. We also apply different calibrating PL relations to estimate Cepheid distances, and investigate the sensitivity of the distance moduli to the adopted calibrating PL relation. We re-determine the OGLE LMC PL relations using a more conservative approach and also study the effect of using…
We present revised and improved mid-infrared Period-Luminosity (PL) relations for Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids based on double-epoch data of 70 Cepheids observed by Spitzer at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0um. The observed scatter at all wavelengths is found to decrease from +/-0.17 mag to +/-0.14 mag, which is fully consistent with the prediction that the total scatter is made up of roughly equal contributions from random sampling of the light curve and nearly-uniform samplings of stars across the instability strip. It is calculated that the Cepheids in this sample have a full amplitude of ab…
Possible deviations from linearity of the LMC Cepheid PL and PLC relations are investigated. Two datasets are studied, respectively from the OGLE and MACHO projects. A nonparametric test, based on linear regression residuals, suggests that neither PL relation is linear. If colour dependence is allowed for then the MACHO PL relation is found to deviate more significantly from the linear, while the OGLE PL relation is consistent with linearity. These finding are confirmed by fitting "Generalised Additive Models" (nonparametric regression functions) to the two datasets. Colour dependence is shown…
We present Fourier analysis at 490\,nm for 87 Cepheid light curves in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The photometry has be obtained through the EROS project whose main purpose is the search for baryonic dark matter in the Galactic halo. The very high quality of the photometry and the good phase coverage enable us to obtain accurate Fourier decomposition of the ligh curves. As a consequence we confirm that the so-called s-Cepheids are overtone pulsators and represent about 30 $\%$ of our sample, whereas the Classical Cepheids are fundamental pulsators. We have identified a number of fea…
Period-colour (PC) and amplitude-colour (AC) relations are studied for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids under the theoretical framework of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) - photosphere interaction. LMC models are constructed with pulsation codes that include turbulent convection, and the properties of these models are studied at maximum, mean and minimum light. As with Galactic models, at maximum light the photosphere is located next to the HIF for the LMC models. However very different behavior is found at minimum light. The long period (P>10days) LMC models imply that the photos…
Observations of Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud, made over the last several decades, allow us to search for evolutionary period changes. None of the Cepheid from our sample of 378 stars stopped pulsating. Also none of them showed a large period change which could indicate mode switching. However for Cepheids with log P > 0.9 we found significant period changes, positive as well as negative. A comparison between the observed period changes and theoretical predictions shows moderate agreement with some models (Bono et al. 2000), and a very large disagreement with others (Alibert et al. 19…
The superb phase resolution and quality of the OGLE data on LMC and SMC Cepheids, together with existing data on Galactic Cepheids, are combined to study the period-colour (PC) and amplitude-colour (AC) relations as a function of pulsation phase. Our results confirm earlier work that the LMC PC relation (at mean light) is more consistent with two lines of differing slopes, separated at a period of 10 days. However, our multi-phase PC relations reveal much new structure which can potentially increase our understanding of Cepheid variables. These multi-phase PC relations provide insight into why…
(abridged) Recent investigations aimed at estimating the distance to the young LMC cluster NGC1866 have made use of Red Clump stars in the surrounding LMC field, together with empirical and theoretical Main-Sequence fitting methods, and have found significantly different distances for the field and the cluster, the latter being closer by in distance modulus by Δ(DM) \sim 0.20 mag. In this paper we (re-)consider the Cepheid star population of NGC1866, to try to shed some light on this discrepancy. By combining various extensive photometric datasets in BVI and single-epoch 2MASS JHK photometry, …
In this paper, we investigate the linearity versus non-linearity of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheid period-luminosity (P-L) relation using two statistical approaches not previously applied to this problem: the testimator method and the Schwarz Information Criterion (SIC). The testimator method is extended to multiple stages for the first time, shown to be unbiased and the variance of the estimated slope can be proved to be smaller than the standard slope estimated from linear regression theory. The Schwarz Information Criterion (also known as the Bayesian Information Criterion) is mor…
It is well-known that the peak brightness of the Type Ia supernovae calibrated with Cepheid distances can be used to determine the Hubble constant. The Cepheid distances to host galaxies of the calibrating supernovae are usually obtained using the period-luminosity (PL) relation derived from Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids. However recent empirical studies provide evidence that the LMC PL relation is not linear. In this Letter we determine the Hubble constant using both the linear and non-linear LMC Cepheid PL relations as calibrating relations to four galaxies that hosted Type Ia supern…
Near infrared (IR) studies of Cepheid variables in the LMC take advantage of the reduced light curve amplitude and metallicity dependence at these wavelengths. This work presents such photometry for two young clusters known to contain sizeable Cepheid populations: NGC 1866 and NGC 2031. Our goal is to determine light curves and period-luminosity (PL) relations in the near-IR, to assess the similarity between cluster and field pulsators, and to examine the predictive capability of current pulsation models. The light curves are obtained from multiwavelength broadband J,H,Ks photometry of Cepheid…
This is an investigation of the period-luminosity relation of classical Cepheids in samples of different metallicity. It is based on 481 Cepheids in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds from the blue and red filter CCD observations (most similar to V_J & R_J) of the French EROS microlensing project. The data-set is complete and provides an excellent basis for a differential analysis between LMC and SMC. In comparison to previous studies of effects on the PL-relation, the EROS data-set offers extremely well-sampled light curves and well-filled instability strips. This allows reliable separatio…
A general review is given of the calibration of the Cepheid distance scale, with particular reference to its use in the determination of H0. Emphasis is placed on the advantage of using a galactic calibration of the Cepheid scale, rather than relying on an adopted distance to the LMC. It is then possible to use LMC data to test for possible metallicity effects on this scale.
We present an analysis of the period distribution of $\sim 1800$ Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud, based on data obtained by the MACHO microlensing experiment and on a previous catalogue by Payne-Gaposchkin. Using stellar evolution and pulsation models, we construct theoretical period-frequency distributions that are compared to the observations. These models reveal that a significant burst of star formation has occurred recently in the LMC ($\sim 1.15\times 10^8$ years). We also show that during the last $\sim 10^8$ years, the main center of star formation has been propagating from SE t…
We have applied the infrared surface brightness (ISB) technique to derive distances to 13 Cepheids in the LMC which span a period range from 3 to 42 days. From the absolute magnitudes of the variables calculated from these distances, we find that the LMC Cepheids define tight period-luminosity relations in the V, I, W, J and K bands which agree exceedingly well with the corresponding Galactic PL relations derived from the same technique, and are significantly steeper than the LMC PL relations in these bands observed by the OGLE-II Project in V, I and W, and by Persson et al. in J and K. We fin…
(Abridged) I cross-correlate the OGLE database of Cepheids in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (MCs) with the second incremental release of the 2MASS JHK survey, and the DENIS IJK point source catalog towards the MCs. Of the 3384 Cepheids in OGLE in both Clouds, 1745 have a counterpart in the 2MASS survey within an 1" radius and good-photometry in all three bands. Only 173 have a counterpart in the DENIS survey within an 1" radius and good-photometry in all three bands. The reason for this difference is that the limiting magnitudes of the 2MASS survey are considerably fainter than for DEN…
We derive individual distances to six Cepheids in the young populous star cluster NGC1866 in the Large Magellanic Cloud employing the near-IR surface brightness technique. With six stars available at the exact same distance we can directly measure the intrinsic uncertainty of the method. We find a standard deviation of 0.11 mag, two to three times larger than the error estimates and more in line with the estimates from Bayesian statistical analysis by Barnes et al. (2005). Using all six distance estimates we determine an unweighted mean cluster distance of 18.30+-0.05. The observations indicat…
Infrared and optical absolute magnitudes are derived for the type II Cepheids kappa Pav and VY Pyx from revised Hipparcos parallaxes and for kappa Pav, V553 Cen and SW Tau from pulsation parallaxes. Phase-corrected JHK mags are given for 142 RR Lyrae variables based on 2MASS data. RR Lyrae itself is overluminous compared with LMC RR Lyraes at the classical Cepheid modulus (18.39) consistent with a prediction of Catalan and Cortes. V553 Cen and SW Tau deviate by only 0.02 mag in the mean from the Matsunaga PL(K) relation for globular cluster type II Cepheids with a zero-point based on the same …
321 Galactic fundamental-mode Cepheids with good B,V,I photometry by Berdnikov et al. 2000 and with homogenized color excesses E(B-V) based on Fernie et al. 1995 are used to determine their P-C relation in the range 0.4<log P<1.6. Distances of 25 Cepheids in open clusters (Feast 1999) and of 28 Cepheids with BBW distances (Gieren et al. 1998) are used in a first step to determine the absorption coefficients R_B=4.17, R_V=3.17, and R_I=1.89. The two sets define two independent P-L relations which agree very well in slope. They are therefore combined into a single mean Galactic P-L relation. Gal…
The Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation is unquestionably one of the most powerful tools at our disposal for determining the extragalactic distance scale. While significant progress has been made in the past few years towards its understanding and characterisation, both on the observational (e.g. the HST Key Project) and theoretical (e.g. non-linear pulsation models, non-LTE atmospheres etc.) sides, the debate on the influence that chemical composition may have on the Period-Luminosity relation is still unsettled. Current estimates lead to differences in the distance as large as 15%, effectivel…
We present a method for solving the lightcurve of an eclipsing binary system which contains a Cepheid variable as one of its components as well as the solutions for three eclipsing Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). A geometric model is constructed in which the component stars are assumed to be spherical and on circular orbits. The emergent system flux is computed as a function of time, with the intrinsic variations in temperature and radius of the Cepheid treated self-consistently. Fitting the adopted model to photometric observations, incorporating data from multiple bandpasses, y…
In a recent paper describing HST observations of Cepheids in the spiral galaxy NGC 4258, Newman et al. (2001) report that the revised calibrations and methods for the Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale yield that the true distance modulus of this galaxy is 29.40+-0.09 mag, corresponding to a metric distance of 7.6+-0.3 Mpc. This Cepheid distance, which holds for 18.50 mag as the true distance modulus of the LMC, is not significantly larger than 7.2+-0.5 Mpc, the value determined by Herrnstein et al. (1999) from purely geometric considerations on the orbital motions of water maser …
A number of recent works have suggested that the period-luminosity (PL) relation for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids exhibits a controversial nonlinear feature with a break period at 10 days. Therefore, the aim of this Research Note is to test the linearity/nonlinearity of the PL relations for the LMC Cepheids in BVIcJHKs band, as well as in the Wesenheit functions. We show that simply comparing the long and short period slopes, together with their associate d standard deviations, leads to a strictly larger error rate than applying rigorous statistical tests such as the F-test. We ap…
We analyse a sample of 236 Cepheids from the Hipparcos catalog, using the method of ``reduced parallaxes'' in V, I, K and the reddening-free ``Wesenheit-index''. We compare our sample to those considered by Feast & Catchpole (1997) and Lanoix et al. (1999). We stress the importance of two systematic effects which influence the distance to the LMC: the slopes of the Galactic PL-relations and metallicity corrections. In order to assess the influence of these various effects, we present 27 distance moduli (DM) to the LMC, based on three different colours (V,I,K), three different slopes, and three…
There is strong evidence that the period-luminosity (PL) relation for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids shows a break at a period around 10 days. Since the LMC PL relation is extensively used in distance scale studies, the non-linearity of the LMC PL relation may affect the results based on this LMC calibrated relation. In this paper we show that this problem can be remedied by using the Wesenheit function in obtaining Cepheid distances. This is because the Wesenheit function is linear although recent data suggests that the PL and the period-colour (PC) relations that make up the Wesen…
We utilize nonlinear pulsation models to reproduce the observed light and color curves for two samples of bump Cepheid variables, 19 from the Large Magellanic Cloud and 9 from the Small Magellanic Cloud. This analysis determines the fundamental parameters mass, luminosity, effective temperature, metallicity, distance and reddening for the sample of stars. The use of light curve shape alone to determine metallicity is a new modelling technique introduced here. The metallicity, distance and reddening distributions for the two samples are in agreement with those of similar stellar populations in …
In this Paper, we have derived Cepheid period-luminosity (P-L) relations for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) fundamental mode Cepheids, based on the data released from OGLE-III. We have applied an extinction map to correct for the extinction of these Cepheids. In addition to the VIW band P-L relations, we also include JHK and four Spitzer IRAC band P-L relations, derived by matching the OGLE-III Cepheids to the 2MASS and SAGE datasets, respectively. We also test the non-linearity of the Cepheid P-L relations based on extinction-corrected data. Our results (again) show that the LMC P-L relatio…
Thanks to HST, there are now many galaxies with Cepheid distances and these provide the main platform for the calibration of the secondary distance indicators. I review recent progress in our understanding of the standard candle properties of Cepheids with particular emphasis on the techniques used in the HST studies. The PL relation defined by Cepheids in the LMC is shown to be excellent, although the distance to the LMC, which determines the zero-point, is still rather controversial. This LMC relation is consistent with the galactic calibrations which use Hipparcos parallaxes or Baade-Wessel…
We present a sample of 76 double-mode Cepheids detected in the 4.5 square degree area in the central part of the LMC. 19 stars from the sample pulsate in the fundamental mode and the first overtone while 57 objects are the first and second overtone pulsators. We analyze the period ratio of double-mode Cepheids and Fourier parameters of decomposition of the light curves of these objects. We also present location of different type Cepheids from the LMC in the color-magnitude diagram and show the distribution of their ${V-I}$ color indices.
We extended to the R and I bands the light curve coverage for 8 Cepheids already studied in B and V by Capaccioli et al [AJ, 103, 1151 (1992)]. Sixteen additional Cepheid candidates have been identified and preliminary periods are proposed. The new Cepheids allow the period-luminosity relation to be extended one magnitude fainter. Apparent B, V, R, and I distance moduli have been calculated. Combining the data at different wavelengths, and assuming a true distance modulus of 18.50 mag for the LMC, we obtain for NGC 3109 a true distance modulus $(m-M)_0=25.67\pm0.16$, corresponding to $1.36\pm0…
We derive the basic properties of seven Galactic open clusters containing Cepheids and construct their period-luminosity (P-L) relations. For our cluster main-sequence fitting we extend previous Hyades-based empirical color-temperature corrections to hotter stars using the Pleiades as a template. We use BVI_{C}JHK_{s} data to test the reddening law, and include metallicity effects to perform a more comprehensive study for our clusters than prior efforts. The ratio of total to selective extinction R_V that we derive is consistent with expectations. Assuming the LMC P-L slopes, we find <M_V> = -…
In the past few years, the Magellanic Clouds have been the targets for several major variable star surveys. The results of these surveys are now becoming available and it is clear that a Renaissance in LMC and SMC variable star research will result. In this review, I will describe the results of such surveys and review the questions that are likely to be answered by further work. With respect to results, I will concentrate on LMC MACHO Project data, including beat Cepheids, discovery statistics, mode identification, Fourier decomposition of lightcurves, and the differences between the LMC and …
We present CCD phase-binned light curves at 490 nm for 97 Cepheid variable stars in the bar of the LMC. The photometry was obtained as part of the French EROS project and has excellent phase coverage, permitting accurate decomposition into Fourier components. We identify as `sinusoidal' or s-Cepheids those stars with periods less than 5.5 d and small second-harmonic components. These stars comprise $\sim$30% of our sample and most form a sequence $\sim$1 mag brighter than the LMC classical Cepheids in the period-luminosity diagram. They are also generally bluer and have lower-amplitude light c…
The MACHO variables of LMC Field 77 that lie in the vicinity of the Cepheid instability strip are reexamined. Among the 144 variables that we identify as Cepheids we find 14 that have Fourier amplitudes <0.05 mag in the MACHO red band, of which 7 have an amplitude <0.006 mag : we dub the latter group of stars ultra-low amplitude (ULA) Cepheids. The variability of these objects is verified by a comparison of the MACHO red with the MACHO blue lightcurves and with those of the corresponding OGLE LMC stars. The occurrence of ULA Cepheids is in agreement with theory. We have also discovered 2 low a…
We present the results of an extensive theoretical investigation on the pulsation behavior of Bump Cepheids. We constructed several sequences of full amplitude, nonlinear, convective models by adopting a chemical composition typical of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids (Y=0.25, Z=0.008) and stellar masses ranging from 6.55 to 7.45 solar masses. We find that theoretical light and velocity curves reproduce the HP, and indeed close to the blue edge the bump is located along the descending branch, toward longer periods it crosses at first the luminosity/velocity maximum and then it appears alo…
