Circumstellar disks are expected to form early in the process that leads to the formation of a young star, during the collapse of the dense molecular cloud core. It is currently not well understood at what stage of the collapse the disk is formed or how it subsequently evolves. We aim to identify whether an embedded Keplerian protoplanetary disk resides in the L1489 IRS system. Given the amount of envelope material still present, such a disk would respresent a very young example of a protoplanetary disk. Using the Submillimeter Array (SMA) we have observed the HCO$^+$ $J=$ 3--2 line with a resolution of about 1$''$. At this resolution a protoplanetary disk with a radius of a few hundred AUs should be detectable, if present. Radiative transfer tools are used to model the emission from both continuum and line data. We find that these data are consistent with theoretical models of a collapsing envelope and Keplerian circumstellar disk. Models reproducing both the SED and the interferometric continuum observations reveal that the disk is inclined by 40$^\circ$ which is significantly different to the surrounding envelope (74$^\circ$). This misalignment of the angular momentum axes may be caused by a gradient within the angular momentum in the parental cloud or if L1489 IRS is a binary system rather than just a single star. In the latter case, future observations looking for variability at sub-arcsecond scales may be able to constrain these dynamical variations directly. However, if stars form from turbulent cores, the accreting material will not have a constant angular momentum axis (although the average is well defined and conserved) in which case it is more likely to have a misalignment of the angular momentum axes of the disk and the envelope.
Using the Submillimeter Array we report the discovery of a compact low mass bipolar molecular outflow from L1014-IRS and confirm its association with the L1014 dense core at 200 pc. Consequently, L1014-IRS is the lowest luminosity (L \~0.09 Lsun) and perhaps the lowest mass source known to be driving a bipolar molecular outflow, which is one of the smallest known in size (~500 AU), mass (< 10^{-4} Msun), and energetics (e.g., force < 10^{-7} Msun km/s/yr).
We present results of submillimeter observations of a low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) condensation in the Cederblad 110 region of the Chamaeleon I dark cloud with Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment. Our HCO+(J=4-3) map reveals a dense molecular gas with an extent of ~ 0.1 pc, which is a complex of two envelopes associated with class I sources Ced110 IRS4 and IRS11 and a very young object Cha-MMS1. The other two class I sources in this region, IRS6 and NIR89, are located outside the clump and have no extended HCO+ emission. HCO+ abundance is calculated to be 2.6 x 10^{-10} for MMS…
We present broad band imaging observations obtained with the ``peak up'' imagers of the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) at wavelengths of 16micron and 22micron for a number of sources detected primarily at submillimeter wavelengths, which are believed to be at high, though undetermined, redshift. We targeted 11 sources originally detected by SCUBA and 5 submillimeter sources detected at 1.2mm by MAMBO. Two optically discovered quasars with z>6 were also observed to determine if there is detectable dust emission at such high redshifts. Seven of the submillimeter sources and …
Imaging polarimetry of the 0.85mm continuum emission in the NGC 7538 region, obtained with the SCUBA Polarimeter, is presented. The polarization map is interpreted in terms of thermal radiation by magnetically aligned dust grains. Two prominent cores associated with IRS 1 and IRS 11, IRS 1(SMM) and IRS 11(SMM), are found in the surface brightness map. Although these cores look similar in surface brightness, their polarization shows striking differences. In IRS 11(SMM), the polarization vectors are extremely well ordered, and the degrees of polarization are quite high with an average of ~3.9 %.…
We present rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 13 submillimeter galaxies, obtained using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The sample includes exclusively bright objects from blank fields and cluster lens assisted surveys that have accurate interferometric positions. We find that the majority of spectra are well fitted by a starburst template or by the superposition of PAH emission features and a weak mid-infrared continuum, the latter a tracer of Active Galactic Nuclei (including Compton-thick ones). We obtain mid-infrared spectroscopic reds…
We have imaged the circumstellar envelope around the binary protostar L1551 IRS 5 in CS (J=7-6) and 343 GHz continuum emission at ~ 3 arcsec resolution using the Submillimeter Array. The continuum emission shows an elongated structure (~ 220 x 100 AU) around the binary perpendicular to the axis of the associated radio jet. The CS emission extends over ~ 400 AU, appears approximately circularly symmetric, and shows a velocity gradient from southeast (blueshifted) to northwest (redshifted). The direction of the velocity gradient is different from that observed in C18O (J=1-0). This may be becaus…
This paper examines the density and velocity structure of envelopes around young stellar objects through submillimeter continuum imaging of four objects in Taurus and previously obtained molecular-line data. Observations carried out with the SCUBA on the JCMT at 850 and 450 micron of L1489 IRS, L1535 IRS, L1527 IRS, and TMC 1 reveal ~2000 AU elongated structures embedded in extended envelopes. The density distribution in these envelopes is equally well fit by a radial power-law of index p=1.0-2.0 or with a collapse model such as that of Shu (1997: ApJ, 214, 488). This inside-out collapse model…
Using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of two bright submillimeter galaxies. SMMJ02399-0136 at z=2.81 shows a superposition of PAH emission features and a mid-infrared continuum, indicating significant and roughly equal contributions to its bolometric luminosity from star formation and from a Compton-thick AGN. We derive a new redshift of z=2.80 for MMJ154127+6616 from the IRS spectrum and find this object is dominated by starburst PAH emission. The rest frame mid- to far-infrared spectral energy distrib…
Recent observations of the deeply embedded L1551 IRS5 system permit the detailed examination of the properties of both the stellar binary and the binary jet. For the individual components of the stellar binary, we determine their masses, mass accretion rates, effective temperatures and luminosities. For the atomic wind/jet flow, we determine the mass loss rate, yielding observationally determined values of the ratio of the mass loss to the mass accretion rate, f. For the X-ray emitting region in the northern jet, we have obtained the jet-velocity and derive the extinction and the densities on …
We present Spitzer IRAC and IRS observations of the dark cloud L1287. The mid-infrared (MIR) IRAC images show deeply embedded infrared sources in the vicinity of the FU Orionis objects RNO 1B and RNO 1C suggesting their association with a small young stellar cluster. For the first time we resolve the MIR point source associated with IRAS 00338+6312 which is a deeply embedded intermediate-mass protostar driving a known molecular outflow. The IRAC colors of all objects are consistent with young stars ranging from deeply embedded Class 0/I sources to Class II objects, part of which appear to be l…
New molecular (13CO J=3-2) and dust continuum (450 and 850 micron) SCUBA maps of the NGC7129 star forming region are presented, complemented by C18O J=3-2 spectra at several positions within the mapped region. The maps include the Herbig Ae/Be star LkHalpha 234, the far-infrared source NGC 7129 FIRS2 and several other pre-stellar sources embedded within the molecular ridge. The SCUBA maps help us understand the nature of the pre-main sequence stars in this actively star forming region. A deeply embedded submillimeter source, SMM2, not clearly seen in any earlier data set, is shown to be a pre-…
We present a census of the population of deeply embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Perseus molecular cloud complex based on a combination of Spitzer Space Telescope mid-IR data from the c2d legacy team and JCMT/SCUBA submillimeter maps from the COMPLETE team. The mid-IR sources detected at 24 micron and having [3.6]-[4.5] > 1 are located close to the center of the SCUBA cores, typically within 15" of their peaks. The narrowness of the spatial distribution of mid-IR sources around the peaks of the SCUBA cores suggests that no significant dispersal of the newly formed YSOs has occurred…
The physical structure of the envelopes around a sample of fourteen massive (1000-100,000 solar L) young stars is investigated on 100- 100,000 AU scales using maps and spectra in submillimeter continuum and lines of C17O, CS and H2CO. The total column densities and the temperature profiles are obtained by fitting self-consistent dust models to submillimeter photometry. Both the molecular line and dust emission data indicate density gradients ~r^{-alpha}, with alpha=1.0-1.5, significantly flatter than the alpha=2.0 generally found for low-mass objects. This flattening may indicate that in massi…
We analyze {\it Spitzer} and Magellan observations of a star forming core near IRS-2 in the young cluster NGC 2264. The submillimeter source IRAS 12 S1, previously believed to be an intermediate mass Class 0 object is shown to be a dense collection of embedded, low mass stars. We argue that this group of stars represents the fragmenting collapse of a dense, turbulent core, based on a number of indicators of extreme youth. With reasonable estimates for the velocity dispersion in the group, we estimate a dynamical lifetime of only a few x 10$^{4}$ years. Spectral energy distributions of stars in…
We present Chandra observations of the massive star-forming region S106, a prominent HII region in Cygnus, associated with an extended molecular cloud and a young cluster. The nebula is excited by a single young massive star located at the center of the molecular cloud and the embedded cluster. The prominence of the cluster in the Chandra observation presented here confirms its youth and allows some of its members to be studied in more detail. We detect X-ray emission from the young massive central source S106 IRS 4, the deeply embedded central object which drives the bipolar nebula with a mas…
We present a census of the population of deeply embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud complex based on a combination of Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared data from the "Cores to Disks" (c2d) legacy team and JCMT/SCUBA submillimeter maps from the COMPLETE team. We have applied a method developed for identifying embedded protostars in Perseus to these datasets and in this way construct a relatively unbiased sample of 27 candidate embedded protostars with envelopes more massive than our sensitivity limit (about 0.1 M_sun). Embedded YSOs are found in 35% of the …
The Submillimeter Array has opened a new window to study the innermost warm and dense regions of the envelopes and disks around deeply embedded protostars. This paper presents high-angular resolution (< 2'') submillimeter observations of the class 0 young stellar object NGC1333-IRAS2A. Dust continuum emission and lines of complex organic molecules such as CH3OCH3 and CH3OCHO, high excitation CH3OH transitions, deuterated methanol CH3OD as well as lines of CO, HCN, H13CN, SO and SO2 are detected on < 200 AU scales. The observations are interpreted using detailed radiative transfer models of the…
Near IR spectra obtained with ISAAC at VLT, have been used to pose constraints on the evolutionary state and accretion properties of a sample of five embedded YSOs located in the R CrA core. This sample includes three Class I sources (HH100 IR, IRS2 and IRS5), and two sources with NIR excesses (IRS6 and IRS3). Absorption lines have been detected in the medium resolution spectra of all the observed targets, together with emission lines likely originating in the disk-star-wind connected regions. We derived spectral types, veiling and stellar luminosity of the five observed sources, which in turn…
We have mapped the water maser emission associated with the infrared centers IRS1 and IRS3 of the NGC 2071IR star forming region at four epochs over ~4 months with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). We detected 269 maser features with ~1 km/sec linewidths and measured 30 proper motions. In each infrared center, the water maser emission appears to trace parts of a protostellar disk and collimated outflow. The disk components are ~9 and ~17 AU long, in IRS3 and IRS1 respectively, and ~2 AU wide. They are identified as disks by their compact size, elongation parallel to the direction of known I…
Observations by the Cores to Disk Legacy Team with the Spitzer Space Telescope have identified a low luminosity, mid-infrared source within the dense core, Lynds 1014, which was previously thought to harbor no internal source. Followup near-infrared and submillimeter interferometric observations have confirmed the protostellar nature of this source by detecting scattered light from an outflow cavity and a weak molecular outflow. In this paper, we report the detection of cm continuum emission with the VLA. The emission is characterized by a quiescent, unresolved 90 uJy 6 cm source within 0.2" o…
Using the ISOPHOT Serendipity Survey (ISOSS) at 170um a sample of galactic star-forming regions exhibiting very cold dust temperatures (< 20 K) and high masses (> 100 M_sun) has been established. We characterise the star-forming content of five regions that were selected as potential sites for early stage high-mass star formation using SCUBA (JCMT) and Spitzer observations. In every region we identify one to four submillimeter clumps with projected sizes between 0.1 and 0.4 pc. The dust temperatures range from 11.6 to 21.3 K and the estimated clump masses are 2 to 166 M_sun. Towards the majori…
(abbreviated) We aim to determine the masses of the envelopes, disks, and central stars of young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Class I stage. We observed the embedded Class I objects IRS 63 and Elias 29 in the rho Ophiuchi star-forming region with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at 1.1 mm. IRS 63 and Elias 29 are both clearly detected in the continuum, with peak fluxes of 459 resp. 47 mJy/beam. The continuum emission toward Elias 29 is clearly resolved, whereas IRS 63 is consistent with a point source down to a scale of 3 arcsec (400 AU). The SMA data are combined with single-dish data, and disk…
The results from a single-dish molecular line survey of a set of 18 deeply embedded young stellar objects are summarized. More than 40 lines from 16 different species were observed with the JCMT, Onsala, IRAM 30m and SEST telescopes. The multi-transition data are analyzed using a temperature and density structure derived from models of the dust continuum emission. For the outer envelope (>300 AU), the data indicate a `drop' abundance profile for many species, with normal abundances in the outer- and innermost regions and highly depleted abundances in an intermediate zone. This zone is bounded …
We present multi-wavelength, high spatial resolution imaging of the IRS 7 region in the R Corona Australis molecular cloud. Our observations include 1.1 mm continuum and HCO^+ J = $3 \to 2$ images from the SMA, ^{12}CO J = $3 \to 2$ outflow maps from the DesertStar heterodyne array receiver on the HHT, 450 $μ$m and 850 $μ$m continuum images from SCUBA, and archival Spitzer IRAC and MIPS 24 \micron images. The accurate astrometry of the IRAC images allow us to identify IRS 7 with the cm source VLA 10W (IRS 7A) and the X-ray source X_W. The SMA 1.1 mm image reveals two compact continuum sources …
High angular resolution and sensitive aperture synthesis observations of CS ($J=2-1$) and CS ($J=3-2$) emissions toward L1551 NE, the second brightest protostar in the Taurus Molecular Cloud, made with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array are presented. L1551 NE is categorized as a class 0 object deeply embedded in the red-shifted outflow lobe of L1551 IRS 5. Previous studies of the L1551 NE region in CS emission revealed the presence of shell-like components open toward L1551 IRS 5, which seem to trace low-velocity shocks in the swept-up shell driven by the outflow from L1551 IRS 5. In this study, s…
We present deep mid-infrared spectroscopy with the Spitzer Space Telescope of 13 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N) field. We find strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in all of our targets which allows us to measure mid-IR spectroscopic redshifts and place constraints on the contribution from star formation and active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity to the mid-IR emission. In the high signal-to-noise ratio composite spectrum of SMGs, we find that the hot dust continuum from an AGN contributes at most 30% of the mid-IR l…
We present the results of a 2.7 mm continuum interferometric survey of 24 young stellar objects in 11 fields. The target objects range from deeply embedded Class 0 sources to optical T Tauri sources. This is the first sub-arcsecond survey of the 2.7 mm dust continuum emission from young, embedded stellar systems. The images show a diversity of structure and complexity. The optically visible T Tauri stars (DG Tauri, HL Tauri, GG Tauri, and GM Aurigae) have continuum emission dominated by compact, less than 1", circumstellar disks. The more embedded near-infrared sources (SVS13 and L1551 IRS5) ha…
Submillimeter observations with ALMA will be the essential next step in our understanding of how stars and planets form. Key projects range from detailed imaging of the collapse of pre-stellar cores and measuring the accretion rate of matter onto deeply embedded protostars, to unravelling the chemistry and dynamics of high-mass star-forming clusters and high-spatial resolution studies of protoplanetary disks down to the 1 AU scale.
This paper reports 43 GHz imaging of the high-mass protostars W33A, AFGL 2591 and NGC 7538 IRS9 at 0.04'' and 0.6'' resolution. In each case, weak (~mJy), compact (~100 AU) emission is detected, which has an elongated shape (axis ratio ~3). For AFGL 2591 and NGC 7538 IRS9, the emission is single-peaked, while for the highest luminosity source, W33A, a `mini-cluster' of three sources is detected. The derived sizes, flux densities, and broad-band radio spectra of the sources support recent models where the initial expansion of HII regions around very young O-type stars is prevented by stellar gr…
This paper presents a large spectral line and continuum survey of 8 deeply embedded, low-mass protostellar cores using the Submillimeter Array. Each source was observed in high excitation lines of some of the most common molecular species, CO, HCO+, CS, SO, H2CO, CH3OH and SiO. Line emission from 11 species originating from warm and dense gas have been imaged at high angular resolution (1-3"; typically 200-600 AU) together with continuum emission at 230 GHz (1.3 mm) and 345 GHz (0.8 mm). Compact continuum emission is observed for all sources which likely originates in marginally optically thic…
Submillimeter lines of CN, NO, CO+ and SO+, and upper limits on SH+ and N2O are observed with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in two high-mass and up to nine low-mass young stellar objects and compared with chemical models. Constant fractional abundances derived from radiative transfer modeling of the line strengths are x(CN) ~ a few x 10^{-11}-10^{-8}, x(NO) ~ 10^{-9}-10^{-8} and x(CO+) ~ 10^{-12}-10^{-10}. SO+ has abundances of a few x 10^{-11} in the high-mass objects and upper limits of ~ 10^{-12}-10^{-11} in the low-mass sources. All abundances are up to 1-2 orders of magnitude higher i…
With the Spitzer-IRS we have obtained the first mid-IR spectroscopy of NGC 7129, in the unusually strong outflow and in a ridge of H_2 emission near the Herbig Be star LkHalpha-234. The UV radiation field strength is estimated from PAH band intensities in the H_2 ridge, and from the rotational H_2 emission lines we have deduced aperture average excitation temperatures and column densities in the two regions, finding the H_2 ridge values to be consistent with pumping by UV fluorescence, but also comparable to regions that form H_2 in non-dissociative C-shocks. The H_2 emission in the outflow is…
NGC 2264 is a young Galactic cluster and the dominant component of the Mon OB1 association lying approximately 760 pc distant within the local spiral arm. The cluster is hierarchically structured, with subclusters of suspected members spread across several parsecs. Associated with the cluster is an extensive molecular cloud complex spanning more than two degrees on the sky. Star formation is ongoing within the region as evidenced by the presence of numerous embedded clusters of protostars, molecular outflows, and Herbig-Haro objects. The stellar population of NGC 2264 is dominated by the O7 V …
We present 5.2-37.2 micron spectroscopy of the edge-on circumstellar disk CRBR 2422.8-3423 obtained using the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) of the Spitzer Space Telescope. The IRS spectrum is combined with ground-based 3-5 micron spectroscopy to obtain a complete inventory of solid state material present along the line of sight toward the source. We model the object with a 2D axisymmetric (effectively 3D) Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. It is found that the model disk, assuming a standard flaring structure, is too warm to contain the very large observed column density of pure CO ice, but is…
We present a determination of the molecular gas mass in the AU Microscopii circumstellar disk. Direct detection of a gas component to the AU Mic disk has proven elusive, with upper limits derived from ultraviolet absorption line and submillimeter CO emission studies. Fluorescent emission lines of H2, pumped by the OVI 1032 resonance line through the C-X (1 -- 1) Q(3) 1031.87 Å transition, are detected by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. These lines are used to derive the H2 column density associated with the AU Mic system. The derived column density is in the range N(H2) = 1.9 x 10^…
We present the detection and characterization of a peculiar low-mass protostar (IRAS 22129+7000) located ~0.4 pc from Ced 201 Photodissociation Region (PDR) and ~0.2 pc from the HH450 jet. The cold circumstellar envelope surrounding the object has been mapped through its 1.2 mm dust continuum emission with IRAM-30m/MAMBO. The deeply embedded protostar is clearly detected with Spitzer/MIPS (70 um), IRS (20-35 um) and IRAC (4.5, 5.8, and 8 um) but also in the K_s band (2.15 um). Given the large "near- and mid-IR excess" in its spectral energy distribution, but large submillimeter-to-bolometric l…
