Knots are commonly found in nearby planetary nebulae (PNe) and star forming regions. Within PNe, knots are often found to be associated with the brightest parts of the nebulae and understanding the physics involved in knots may reveal the processes dominating in PNe. As one of the closest PNe, the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) is an ideal target to study such small-scale (~300 AU) structures. We have obtained infrared integral spectroscopy of a comet-shaped knot in the Helix Nebula using SINFONI on the Very Large Telescope at high spatial resolution (50-125 mas). With spatially resolved 2 micron spectra, we find that the H2 rotational temperature within the cometary knots is uniform. The rotational-vibrational temperature of the cometary knot (situated in the innermost region of the nebula, 2.5 arcmin away from the central star), is 1800 K, higher than the temperature seen in the outer regions (5-6 arcmin from the central star) of the nebula (900 K), showing that the excitation temperature varies across the nebula. The obtained intensities are reasonably well fitted with 27 km s-1 C-type shock model. This ambient gas velocity is slightly higher than the observed [HeII] wind velocity of 13 km s-1. The gas excitation can also be reproduced with a PDR (photo dominant region) model, but this requires an order of magnitude higher UV radiation. Both models have limitations, highlighting the need for models that treats both hydrodynamical physics and the PDR.
We have examined a stream-source model for the production of the cometary tails observed in the Helix Nebula NGC 7293 in which a transonic or moderately supersonic stream of ionized gas overruns a source of ionized gas. Hydrodynamic calculations reveal velocity structures which are in good agreement with the observational data on tail velocities and are consistent with observations of the nebular structure. The results also are indicative of a stellar atmosphere origin for the cometary globules. Tail remnants persist for timescales long enough for their identification with faint striations vis…
We report the detection of 21-cm line emission from H I in the planetary nebula NGC 7293 (the Helix). The observations, made with the Very Large Array, show the presence of a ring of atomic hydrogen that is associated with the outer portion of the ionized nebula. This ring is most probably gas ejected in the AGB phase that has been subsequently photodissociated by radiation from the central star. The H I emission spreads over about 50 km/s in radial velocity. The mass in H I is approximately 0.07 solar masses, about three times larger than the mass in molecular hydrogen and comparable with the…
A novel explanation for the origin of the cometary globules within NGC 7293 (the "Helix" planetary nebula) is examined; that these globules originate as massive cometary bodies at large astrocentric radii. The mass of such hypothetical cometary bodies would have to be several orders of magnitude larger than any such bodies observed in our solar system in order to supply the observed mass of neutral gas. It is however shown that comets at "outer Oort cloud" like distances are likely to survive past the red giant and asymptotic giant branch evolutionary phases of the central star, allowing them …
The central star of the Helix Nebula is a hot white dwarf with unexpected hard X-ray emission. With an effective temperature of ~100,000 K, the star is a powerful source of H-ionizing radiation; the atmosphere of a stellar or planetary companion, if present, will be ionized and emit recombination lines. To probe the origin of hard X-ray emission from the Helix Nebula's central star, we have obtained multi-epoch high-dispersion spectra of the star, and found temporal variation in the H-alpha line profile over a time span of one week. The observed width and strength of the variable H-alpha emiss…
We present the results of an optical absorption study of NGC 7293, the Helix planetary nebula (PN), designed to search for diffuse band (DIB) absorptions perhaps arising in the carbon-rich circumstellar matter of the PN. We made high resolution spectra of 8 stars located close to and behind the Helix. Through a detailed analysis of the NaI and CaII lines, we find that two lines of sight situated close to the PN as mapped in CO and HI exhibit very strong NaI absorption. This absorption is due to the PN neutral or molecular material. No corresponding CaII line is observed in agreement with the v…
We report high resolution imaging of a prominent cometary globule in the Helix nebula in the CO J=1-0 (2.6 mm) and H2 v=1-0 S(1) (2.12 micron) lines. The observations confirm that globules consist of dense condensations of molecular gas embedded in the ionized nebula. The head of the globule is seen as a peak in the CO emission with an extremely narrow line width (0.5 km/s) and is outlined by a limb-brightened surface of H2 emission facing the central star and lying within the photo-ionized halo. The emission from both molecular species extends into the tail region. The presence of this extend…
The 3-D structure of the Helix Nebula has been addressed multiple times and is slowly yielding to application of monochromatic emission line imaging, high resolution spectroscopy, and photoionization theory. The inner structure of the nebula is a toroidal disk filled with doubly ionized helium and is ionization bounded, with an extended vertical component resembling the structure of numerous bipolar nebulae. The outer structure is less well defined, with one construction being that there is an open-center outer-disk that is nearly perpendicular to the inner-disk and an alternate construction t…
We explain the Ha emission of the cometary knots in the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) with an analytical model that describes the emission of the head of the globules as a photoevaporated flow produced by the incident ionizing radiation of the central star.We compare these models with the Ha emission obtained from the HST archival images of the Helix Nebula. From a comparison of the Ha emission with the predictions of the analytical model we obtain a rate of ionizing photons from the central star of about 5e45 s^-1, which is consistent with estimates based on the total Hb flux of the nebula. We also…
New, very long (25'), cuts of spatially resolved profiles of the Halpha and [N II] optical emission lines have been obtained over the face of the Helix planetary nebula, NGC 7293. These directions were chosen to supplement previous similar, though shorter, cuts as well as crossing interesting phenomena in this nebular envelope. In particular one new cut crosses the extremes of the proposed CO J=2-1 emitting outer "torus" shown by Huggins and his co-workers to be nearly orthogonal to its inner counterpart. The second new cut crosses the extensive outer filamentary arcs on either side of the bri…
We present new narrow-band filter imagery in H-alpha and [N II] 6584 along with UV and optical spectrophotometry measurements from 1200 to 9600 Angstroms of NGC 7293, the Helix Nebula, a nearby, photogenic planetary nebula of large diameter and low surface brightness. Detailed models of the observable ionized nebula support the recent claim that the Helix is actually a flattened disk whose thickness is roughly one-third its diameter with an inner region containing hot, highly ionized gas which is generally invisible in narrow-band images. The outer visible ring structure is of lower ionization…
We have mapped the Helix (NGC 7293) planetary nebula (PN) with the IRAC instrument on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The Helix is one of the closest bright PN, and therefore provides an opportunity to resolve the small-scale structure in the nebula. The emission from this PN in the 5.8 and 8 micron IRAC bands is dominated by the pure rotational lines of molecular hydrogen, with a smaller contribution from forbidden line emission such as [Ar III] in the ionized region. The IRAC images resolve the "cometary knots" which have been previously studied in this PN. The "tails" of the knots and the radi…
Excess emission from a point-like source coincident with the central star of the Helix Nebula is detected with Spitzer at 8, 24, and 70 um. At 24 um, the central source is superposed on an extended diffuse emission region. While the [OIV] 25.89 um line contributes to the diffuse emission, a 10-35 um spectrum of the central source shows a strong thermal continuum. The excess emission from the star most likely originates from a dust disk with blackbody temperatures of 90--130 K. Assuming a simple optically thin debris disk model, the dust is distributed in a ring between ~35 and ~150 AU from the…
Hubble Space Telescope images of the Helix Planetary Nebula are interpreted using the hydro-gravitational-dynamics theory (HGD) of Gibson 1996-2006. HGD claims that baryonic-dark-matter (BDM) dominates the halo masses of galaxies (Schild 1996) as Jovian (Primordial-fog-particle [PFP]) Planets (JPPs) in proto-globular-star-cluster (PGC) clumps for all galaxy halo diameters bounded by stars. From HGD, supernova Ia (SNe Ia) events always occur in planetary nebulae (PNe) within PGCs. The dying central star of a PNe slowly accretes JPP mass to grow the white-dwarf to instability. Plasma jets, winds…
We present HST/NICMOS imaging of the H_2 2.12 μm emission in 5 fields in the Helix Nebula ranging in radial distance from 250-450" from the central star. The images reveal arcuate structures with their apexes pointing towards the central star. Comparison of these images with comparable resolution ground based images reveals that the molecular gas is more highly clumped than the ionized gas line tracers. From our images, we determine an average number density of knots in the molecular gas ranging from 162 knots/arcmin^2 in the denser regions to 18 knots/arcmin^2 in the lower density outer regio…
Wide angle Hubble Space Telescope (HST/ACS) images of the Helix Planetary Nebula (NGC 7293) are interpreted using the hydro-gravitational theory (HGT) of Gibson 1996-2000 that predicts the baryonic dark matter and interstellar medium (ISM) consists of Mars-mass primordial-fog-particle (PFP) frozen H-He planets. The new ACS images confirm and extend the O'Dell and Handron 1996 WFPC2 images showing thousands of cometary globules, which we suggest are cocoons of PFP and Jupiter frozen-gas-planets evaporated by powerful beamed radiation from the hot central white dwarf and its companion. The atmos…
Through HST imaging of the inner part of the main-ring of the Helix Nebula together with CTIO 4-m images of the fainter outer parts, we have an unprecedented-quality view of the nearest bright planetary nebula. These images have allowed determination that the main-ring of the nebula is composed of an inner-disk of about 499\arcsec diameter (0.52 pc) surrounded by an outer-ring (in reality a torus) of 742\arcsec diameter (0.77 pc) whose plane is highly inclined to the plane of the disk. This outer-ring is surrounded by an outermost-ring of 1500\arcsec (1.76 pc) diameter which is flattened on th…
Radioastronomical studies have indicated that the magnetic field in the central few hundred parsecs of our Milky Way Galaxy has a dipolar geometry and a strength substantially larger than elsewhere in the Galaxy, with estimates ranging up to a milligauss. A strong, large-scale magnetic field can affect the Galactic orbits of molecular clouds by exerting a drag on them, it can inhibit star formation, and it can guide a wind of cosmic rays away from the central region, so a characterization of the magnetic field at the Galactic center is important for understanding much of the activity there. He…
We have conducted a combined observational and theoretical investigation of the ubiquitous knots in the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293). We have constructed a combined hydrodynamic+radiation model for the ionized portion of these knots and have accurately calculated a static model for their molecular regions. Imaging observations in optical emission lines were made with the Hubble Space Telescope's STIS spectrograph, operating in a "slitless" mode, complemented by WFPC2 images in several of the same lines. The NICMOS camera was used to image the knots in molecular hydrogen. These observations, when co…
[Abridged] We use new HST and archived images to clarify the nature of the knots in the Helix Nebula. We employ published far infrared spectrophotometry and existing 2.12 micron images to establish that the population distribution of the lowest ro-vibrational states of H2 is close to the distribution of a gas in LTE at 988 +- 119 K. We derive a total flux from the nebula in H2 lines and compare this with the power available from the central star for producing this radiation. We establish that neither soft X-rays nor FUV radiation has enough energy to power the H2 radiation, only the stellar EU…
We present the first high resolution HeII 4686 images of the high excitation nebula around the WR star Brey 2 in the LMC. This nebula presents a striking morphology: a small arc-like feature some 3.6pc in radius is particularly prominent in the HeII 4686 line. We further discover a previously unknown faint HeII emission that extends over an area of 22*17 pc^2. An even fainter HeII emission is apparently associated with the interstellar bubble blown by the progenitor of Brey2. The total HeII flux corresponds to an ionizing flux of 4*10^{47} photons/s. Halpha, [OIII], and HeI 5876 images and lon…
We present VLT UVES echelle spectrophotometry of the Orion nebula in the 3100 to 10400 A range. We have measured the intensity of 555 emission lines, many of them corresponding to permitted lines of different heavy-element ions. This is the largest set of spectral emission lines ever obtained for a Galactic or extragalactic HII region. We have derived He+, C++, O+, O++ and Ne++ abundances from pure recombination lines. This is the first time that O+ and Ne++ abundances are obtained from this kind of lines in the nebula. We have also derived abundances from collisionally excited lines for a lar…
Echelle spectrophotometry of the 30 Doradus nebula in the LMC is presented. The data consists of VLT UVES observations in the 3100 to 10350 A range. The intensities of 366 emission lines have been measured, including 269 identified permitted lines of H 0, He 0, C 0, C+, N+, N++, O 0, O+, Ne 0, Ne+, S+, S++, Si 0 , Si+, Si++, Ar+, and Mg+. Electron temperatures and densities have been determined using different line intensity ratios. The He+, C++, O+, and O++ ionic abundances have been derived from recombination lines, these abundances are almost independent of the temperature structure of the …
The high angular resolution and dynamic range achieved by the NACO adaptive optics system on the VLT is an excellent tool to study the morphology of Planetary Nebulae (PNe). We observed four stars in different evolutionary stages from the AGB to the PNe phase. The images of the inner parts of the PN Hen 2-113 reveal the presence of a dusty torus tilted with respect to all the other structures of the nebula and the present of hot dust close to the hot central star. The NACO observations of Roberts 22 reveal an amazingly complex nebular morphology with a S-shape that can be interpreted in terms …
While in the past spherodicity was assumed, and still is used in modeling of most nebulae, we know now that only a small number of planetary nebulae (PNe) are really spherical or at least nearly round. Round planetary nebulae are the minority of objects. In the case of those objects that underwent a very late helium flash (called VLTP objects or ``born-again'' PNe) it seems to be different. The first, hydrogen-rich PN, is more or less round. The ejecta from the VLTP event, in contrast, are extremely asymmetrical.
Echelle spectrophotometry of the planetary nebula NGC 5307 is presented. The data consists of VLT UVES observations in the 3100 to 10360 A range. Electron temperatures and densities have been determined using different line intensity ratios. We determine the H, He, C, and O abundances based on recombination lines, these abundances are almost independent of the temperature structure of the nebula. We also determine the N, O, Ne, S, Cl, and Ar abundances based on collisionally excited lines, the ratios of these abundances relative to that of H depend strongly on the temperature structure of the …
A deep, continuum-subtracted, image of NGC 7293 has been obtained in the light of the Halpha+[N II] emission lines. New images of two filamentary halo stuctures have been obtained and the possible detection of a collimated outflow made. Spatially resolved, longslit profiles of the Halpha+[N II] lines have been observed across several of these features with the MES combined with the SPM 2.1m telescope; these are compared with the [N II]6584, [O III]5007, HeII 6560 and Halpha profiles obtained over the nebular core. The central HeII emission is originating in a ~0.34pc diameter spherical volume …
Context: A planetary nebula (PN) candidate was discovered during FORS imaging of the Local Group dwarf galaxy Phoenix. Aims: Use this PN to complement abundances from red-giant stars. Methods: FORS spectroscopy was used to confirm the PN classification. Empirical methods and photoionization modeling were used to derive elemental abundances from the emission line fluxes and to characterize the central star. Results: For the elements deemed most reliable for measuring the metallicity of the interstellar medium (ISM) from which the PN formed, [O/H] ~ -0.46 and [Ar/H] ~ -1.03. [O/H] has lower meas…
We report the discovery in NIR with SofI at the NTT of a resolved circumstellar dust disk around a 2MASS source at the periphery of the rho Ophiuchi dark cloud. We present follow-up observations in J, H, and Ks-band obtained with ISAAC at the VLT, under 0.4"-seeing conditions, which unveil a dark dust lane oriented East-West between two characteristic northern and southern reflection nebulae. This new circumstellar dust disk has a radius of 2.15" (300 AU at 140 pc), and a width of 1.2" (170 AU at 140 pc). Thanks to its location at the periphery of the dense cores, it suffers small foreground v…
A high quality, medium-resolution K-band spectrum has been obtained of the ultracompact HII region G29.96-0.02 with the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The slit was positioned along the symmetry axis of the cometary shaped nebula. Besides the spectrum of the embedded ionizing O star, the long-slit observation revealed the rich emission-line spectrum produced by the ionized nebula with sub-arcsec spatial resolution. The nebular spectrum includes Br$γ$, several helium emission lines and a molecular hydrogen line. A detailed analysis is presented of the variation in strength, velocity and width of th…
X-ray observations have unveiled the existence of enigmatic point-like sources at the center of young (a few kyrs) supernova remnants. These sources, known as Central Compact Objects (CCOs), are thought to be neutron stars produced by the supernova explosion, although their X-ray phenomenology makes them markedly different from all the other young neutron stars discovered so far.The aim of this work is to search for the optical/IR counterpart of the Vela Junior CCO and to understand the nature of the associated Halpha nebula discovered by Pellizzoni et al. (2002).}{We have used deep optical (R…
We present long slit spectrophotometry of regions V and X of the local group irregular galaxy NGC 6822. The data consist of VLT FORS observations in the 3450 to 7500 A range. We have obtained electron temperatures and densities using different line intensity ratios. We have derived the He, C, and O abundances relative to H based on recombination lines, the abundance ratios among these elements are almost independent of the temperature structure of the nebulae. We have also determined the N, O, Ne, S, Cl, and Ar abundances based on collisionally excited lines, the ratios of these abundances rel…
Based on results obtained with FORS1 in long-slit mode we demonstrate the power of the VLT for the spectroscopy of faint emission line nebulae such as the gaseous halos of diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in spiral galaxies. It is shown that VLT spectra of DIG allow us to address the ionization and excitation processes for the interstellar medium on galactic scales and that in the future more detailed kinematical studies of DIG could help to constrain the origin of the observed thick H+ layer in galaxies. The currently available instrumentation with regard to this application is compared to other pos…
The state of the art of optical studies of Isolated Neutron Stars (INSs) and their Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe) is reviewed. In addition, results obtained from recent HST and VLT observations are presented and discussed.
We report the discovery of three proplyd-like structures in the giant HII region NGC 3603. The emission nebulae are clearly resolved in narrow-band and broad-band HST/WFPC2 observations in the optical and broad-band VLT/ISAAC observations in the near-infrared. All three nebulae are tadpole shaped, with the bright ionization front at the head facing the central cluster and a fainter ionization front around the tail pointing away from the cluster. Typical sizes are 6,000 A.U. x 20,000 A.U. The nebulae share the overall morphology of the proplyds (``PROto PLanetarY DiskS'') in Orion, but are 20 t…
We investigate the dynamics of the nebula around the symbiotic star Hen 2-147, determine its expansion parallax, and compare it with the distance obtained via the Period-Luminosity relation for its Mira variable. The geometry of the nebula is found to be that of a knotty annulus of ionized gas inclined to the plane of sky and expanding with a velocity of ~90 km/s. A straightforward application of the expansion parallax method provides a distance of 1.5+-0.4 kpc, which is a factor of two lower than the distance of 3.0+-0.4 kpc obtained from the Period-Luminosity relationship for the Mira (which…
The hydrogen ionization and dissociation front around an ultraviolet radiation source should merge when the ratio of ionizing photon flux to gas density is sufficiently low and the spectrum is sufficiently hard. This regime is particularly relevant to the molecular knots that are commonly found in evolved planetary nebulae, such as the Helix Nebula, where traditional models of photodissociation regions have proved unable to explain the high observed luminosity in H_2 lines. In this paper we present results for the structure and steady-state dynamics of such advection-dominated merged fronts, c…
(Abridged) Results from the first dedicated study of Galactic PNe by means of optical integral field spectroscopy with the VLT FLAMES Argus IFU are presented. Three typical Galactic-disk PNe have been mapped with the 11.5''x7.2'' Argus array: two dimensional spectral maps of NGC 5882, 6153 and 7009 with 297 spatial pixels per target were obtained at sub-arcsec resolutions and 297 spectra per target were obtained in the 396.4-507.8 nm range. Spatially resolved maps of emission lines and of nebular physical properties were produced. The abundances of helium and of doubly ionized carbon and oxyge…
Spectroscopic observations obtained with the VLT of one planetary nebula (PN) in Sextans A and of five PNe in Sextans B and of several HII regions (HII) in these two dwarf irregular galaxies are presented. The extended spectral coverage, from 320.0 to 1000.0nm, and the large telescope aperture allowed us to detect a number of emission lines, covering more than one ionization stage for several elements (He, O, S, Ar). The electron temperature (Te) diagnostic [OIII] line at 436.3 nm was measured in all six PNe and in several HII allowing for an accurate determination of the ionic and total chemi…
Recent weak emission-line long-slit surveys and modelling studies of PNe have convincingly argued in favour of the existence of an unknown component in the planetary nebula plasma consisting of cold, hydrogen-deficient gas, as an explanation for the long-standing recombination-line versus forbidden-line temperature and abundance discrepancy problems. Here we describe the rationale and initial results from a detailed spectroscopic study of three Galactic PNe undertaken with the VLT FLAMES integral-field unit spectrograph, which advances our knowledge about the small-scale physical properties, c…

We report infrared observations of the planetary nebula Hen 2-113 obtained with VLT/NACO, VLTI/MIDI, VLT/ISAAC and TIMMI at the ESO 3.6m. Hen 2-113 exhibits a clear ring-like structure superimposed to a more diffuse environment visible in the L' (3.8$μ$m), M' (4.78$μ$m) and 8.7$μ$m bands. No clear core at 8.7$μ$m and no fringes through the N band could be detected for this object with MIDI. A qualitative interpretation of the object structure is proposed using a diabolo-like geometrical model. The PAH content of the nebula was also studied with ISAAC and TIMMI observations. This indicates that…
There is strong evidence that the planets in the solar system evolved from a disk-shaped solar nebula ~4.56 Gyr ago. By studying young stars in various evolutionary stages, one aims at tracing back the early history of the solar system, in particular the timescales for disk dissipation and for the formation of planetary systems. We used the VLT & ISAAC, and ESA's Infrared Space Observatory & ISOCAM to study the circumstellar environment of young low-mass stars.
We study the chemistry in the slow wind during the transition from AGB star to pre-planetary nebula (PPN) and planetary nebula (PN). We show that there is a very rich chemistry of degradation products created by photoprocessing, driven by the gradually hardening radiation field of the central star. Most of these products are, however, photodissociated during the PPN phase if the wind is smooth. By contrast, if the wind is clumpy, possibly because of clumpiness in the AGB atmosphere, then many of these degradation products survive into the PN phase. Thus, chemistry may be used to infer the exis…
We aim to study the structure of the nebula around the post-AGB, binary star 89 Her. The presence of a rotating disk around this star had been proposed but not been yet confirmed by observations. We present high-resolution PdBI maps of CO J=2-1 and 1-0. Properties of the nebula are directly derived from the data and model fitting. We also present N-band interferometric data on the extent of the hot dust emission, obtained with the VLTI. Two nebular components are found: (a) an extended hour-glass-like structure, with expansion velocities of about 7 km/s and a total mass ~ 3 10$^{-3}$ Mo, and (…
Sextans A and Sextans B are two dIr galaxies situated in the outskirts of the Local Group (LG), in which both PNe and H II regions have been detected (Jacoby & Lesser 1981, Magrini et al. 2002, 2003). We present spectroscopic observations of PNe and HII regions in these two galaxies (obtained with the VLT) Preliminary results about PNe physico-chemical properties are presented.
Radial velocities of 40 intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) in the Virgo cluster were obtained with the new multi-fiber FLAMES spectrograph on UT2 at VLT. For the first time, the lambda 4959 AA line of the [OIII] doublet is seen in a large fraction (50%) of ICPNe spectra, and a large fraction of the photometric candidates with m(5007) <\= 27.2 is spectroscopically confirmed. ICPNe with the velocity dispersion of the Virgo cluster are found in our CORE field 1 deg from M87. These may have originated from tidal mass loss of smaller galaxies in the M87 subcluster halo. In a field 0.25 deg from…
We present the discovery of a silicate disc at the centre of the planetary nebula Mz3 (the Ant). The nebula was observed with MIDI on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The visibilities obtained at different orientations clearly indicate the presence of a dusty, nearly edge-on disc in the heart of the nebula. An amorphous silicate absorption feature is clearly seen in our mid-IR spectrum and visibility curves. We used radiative transfer Monte Carlo simulations to constrain the geometrical and physical parameters of the disc. We derive an inner radius of 9 AU (~6mas assuming D=1.4k…
We present: 1) a kinematic and morphological study of the giant Lya nebula associated with the radio galaxy MRC2104-242 (z = 2.49) based on integral field spectroscopic VIMOS data from VLT; 2) a photometric study of the host (proto?) galaxy based on Spitzer Space Telescope data. The galaxy appears to be embedded in a giant (>120 kpc) gas reservoir that surrounds it completely. The kinematic properties of the nebula suggest that it is a rotating structure, which would imply a lower limit to the dynamical mass of ~3 x 1e11 Msun. An alternate scenario is that the gas is infalling. Such a process …
For the first time we have directly detected magnetic fields in central stars of planetary nebulae by means of spectro-polarimetry with FORS1 at the VLT. In all four objects of our sample we found kilogauss magnetic fields, in NGC1360 and LSS1362 with very high significance, while in EGB5 and Abell36 the existence of a magnetic field is probable but with less certainty. This discovery supports the hypothesis that the non-spherical symmetry of most planetary nebulae is caused by magnetic fields in AGB stars. Our high discovery rate demands mechanisms to prevent full conservation of magnetic flu…
We present observations of the dusty emission from the young planetary nebulae Hen2-113 and CPD-56 obtained with VLT/NACO, VLTI/MIDI. The central stars of these two objects are Wolf-Rayet stars of the same spectral type [WC10]. They share an impressive number of characteristics and are located at similar distance, making the detection of any differences in their close environment of great interest. Hen2-113 exhibits a clear ring-like structure of about 0.4 arcsec in diameter, superimposed to a more diffuse environment visible in L', M' and 8.7 micron bands. No clear core could be detected for …
We present the first results of our VLT observation campaign of the Central Compact Objects (CCOs) in SNRs RX J085201.4-461753 (Vela Jr), 1E 1648-5051 (RCW 103) and RX J171328.4-394955 (G347.3-0.5). For Vela Jr., we found that the source is embedded in a compact optical nebulosity, possibly a bow-shock or a photo-ionization nebula, and we identified a candidate IR counterpart to the CCO. For RCW 103, we found no convincing evidence neither for 6 hrs IR modulation nor for variability on any time scale from the proposed counterpart, as well as for the other candidates close to the revised Chandr…
We present diffraction-limited images in the 11.3 micron PAH band and in the continuum at 11.9 microns of the S287B star forming region obtained with the newly commissioned mid-infrared imager/spectrometer VISIR at the VLT. In both filters five point-like sources are detected, of which at least one has a spectral energy distribution reminiscent of a Lada Class I source. We also report on the discovery of a new Herbig Ae star in this region. It is particularly striking that the brightest mid-infrared source in this region has not been detected at shorter wavelengths; it is a good candidate to b…
The core of the nebula surrounding Eta Carinae has been observed with the VLT Adaptive Optics system NACO and with the interferometer VLTI/MIDI to constrain spatially and spectrally the warm dusty environment and the central object. In particular, narrow-band images at 3.74 and 4.05 micron reveal the butterfly shaped dusty environment close to the central star with unprecedented spatial resolution. A void whose radius corresponds to the expected sublimation radius has been discovered around the central source. Fringes have been obtained in the Mid-IR which reveal a correlated flux of about 100…
We have found the fluorine lines [F IV] 3996.92A,4059.90A in the extremely metal-poor ([Ar/H] = -2.10+/-0.21) halo planetary nebula (PN) BoBn 1 in high-dispersion spectra from the 8.2-m VLT/UVES archive. Chemical abundance analysis shows that the fluorine abundance is [F/H] = +1.06+/-0.08, making BoBn 1 the most fluorine-enhanced and metal-poor PN among fluorine-detected PNe and providing new evidence that fluorine is enhanced by nucleosynthesis in low mass metal-poor stars. A comparison with the abundances of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars suggests that BoBn 1 shares their origin and…
We present the first integral field spectroscopy observations of the two planetary nebulae NGC3242 and NGC4361 with the VIMOS instrument attached to VLT-UT3. By co-adding a large number of spaxels we reach an emission line detection limit of 5.E-18 erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} arcsec^{-2}. In the case of NGC3242, we succeed in determining some properties of the halo. The radial surface brightness profile in [OIII] implies increasing mass loss before the formation of the PN. Traces of the mysterious 'rings' are clearly visible. We find for the first time an apparent temperature gradient across a halo: fr…
Observations of hot stars belonging to the young cluster LMC-NGC2004 and its surrounding region have been obtained with the VLT-GIRAFFE facilities in MEDUSA mode. 25 Be stars were discovered; the proportion of Be stars compared to B-type stars is found to be of the same order in the LMC and in the Galaxy fields. 23 hot stars were discovered as spectroscopic binaries (SB1 and SB2), 5 of these are found to be eclipsing systems from the MACHO database, with periods of a few days. About 75% of the spectra in our sample are polluted by hydrogen (Halpha and Hgamma), [SII] and [NII] nebular lines. Th…
Images obtained with the ESO VLT and FORS1 in [O III] 5007 on- and off-band as well as r_Gunn filters are analyzed to search for Planetary Nebula (PN) candidates in the dwarf irregular NGC 3109. In the continuum-subtracted [O III] 5007 on-band images, a large number of emission-line regions were detected. We describe the criteria employed in order to distinguish PN candidates from compact HII regions, finding that the sizes and the properties of the ionizing stars are the most unambiguous discriminators for separating the two classes. Based upon these criteria, we have found 20 PN candidates f…
Narrow-band imaging surveys aimed at detecting the faint emission from the 5007 [O III] line of intracluster planetary nebulae in Virgo also probe high redshift z=3.1 Ly alpha emitters. Here we report on the spectroscopic identification of 9 Ly alpha emitters at z=3.13, obtained with the FORS spectrograph at Unit 1 of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT UT1). The spectra of these high redshift objects show a narrow, isolated Ly alpha emission with very faint (frequently undetected) continuum, indicating a large equivalent width. No other features are visible in our spectra. Our Ly alpha emitters…
(Abridged) Deep VLT spectropolarimetric observations are presented for two powerful radio galaxies, 0850-206 and 1303+091. These observations cover the rest-frame wavelength range ~ 1450 - 3750 A. New radio observations and continuum images of the same sources are also presented. These galaxies are the first two observed from a complete sample of nine radio sources with redshifts in the range 1.3 < z < 1.5 (selected from the equatorial sample of powerful radio sources of Best, Rottgering & Lehnert), as part of a project aimed to investigate the multi-component nature of the UV continuum in rad…
The line-of-sight velocities and [OIII] 5007 AA expansion velocities are measured for 11 planetary nebulae (PNs) in the Virgo cluster core, at 15 Mpc distance, with the FLAMES spectrograph on the ESO VLT. These PNs are located about halfway between the two giant ellipticals M87 and M86. From the [OIII] 5007 AA line profile widths, the average half-width at half maximum expansion velocity for this sample of 11 PNs is v_HWHM = 16.5 km/s (RMS=2.6 km/s). We use the PN subsample bound to M87 to remove the distance uncertainties, and the resulting [OIII] 5007 AA luminosities to derive the central st…
