We present a mosaic image of the 1.4GHz radio continuum emission from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Parkes Telescope. The mosaic covers 10.8 x 12.3 square degrees with an angular resolution of 40", corresponding to a spatial scale of 10pc in the LMC. The final image is suitable for studying emission on all scales between 40" and the surveyed area. In this paper, we discuss i) the characteristics of the LMC's diffuse and compact radio continuum emission, ii) the fraction of the emission produced by thermal processes and the implied star formation rate in the LMC, and iii) variations in the radio spectral index across the LMC. Two non-standard reduction techniques that we used to process the ATCA visibility data may be of interest for future wide-field radio continuum surveys. The data are open to the astronomical community and should be a rich resource for studies of individual objects such as supernova remnants, HII regions and planetary nebulae, as well as extended features such as the diffuse emission from synchrotron radiation.
We present preliminary results from spectral observations of four candidate radio sources co-identified with known planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These were made using the Radcliffe 1.9-meter telescope in Sutherland, South Africa. These radio PNe were originally found in Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) surveys of the SMC at 1.42 and 2.37 GHz, and were further confirmed by new high resolution ATCA images at 6 and 3 cm (4"/2"). Optical PNe and radio candidates are within 2" and may represent a subpopulation of selected radio bright objects. Nebular ionized …
We present results from the combined Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) aperture synthesis mosaic survey of HI emission in the Large Magellanic Cloud with 64m Parkes single dish telescope observations.
We present the results of new high resolution ATCA observations of SNR J0519-6926. We found that this SNR exhibits a typical "horseshoe" appearance with alpha = -0.55 +- 0.08 and D=28+-1 pc. No polarization (or magnetic fields) are detected to a level of 1%. This is probably due to a relatively poor sampling of the uv plane caused be observing in "snap-shot" mode.
We present aperture synthesis imaging of dense molecular gas in the Large Magellanic Cloud, taken with the prototype millimeter receivers of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Our observations of the N113 HII region reveal a condensation with a size of ~6" (1.5 pc) FWHM, detected strongly in the 1-0 lines of HCO+, HCN and HNC, and weakly in C_2H. Comparison of the ATCA observations with single-dish maps from the Mopra Telescope and sensitive spectra from the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope indicates that the condensation is a massive clump of ~10^4 solar masses within a larger ~…
We present interferometric observations with resolution of ~3 arcsecs of the isolated, low-mass protostellar double cores CG30 and BHR71 in the N2$H+(1-0) line and at 3mm dust continuum, using the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The results are complemented by infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope. In CG30, the 3mm dust continuum images resolve two compact sources with a separation of ~21.7 arcsecs (~8700 AU). In BHR71, strong dust continuum emission is detected at the position of the mid-infrared source IRS1, while only weak emission is detected from the secondary mid-infr…
We have observed the supernova remnant (SNR) G290.1-0.8 in the 21-cm HI line and the 20-cm radio continuum using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The HI data were combined with data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey to recover the shortest spatial frequencies. In contrast, HI absorption was analyzed by filtering extended HI emission, with spatial frequencies shorter than 1.1 k-lambda. The low-resolution ATCA radio continuum image of the remnant shows considerable internal structure, resembling a network of filaments across its 13 arcmin diameter. A high-resolution ATCA radio…
We present the results of ATCA HI line and 20-cm radio continuum observations of the galaxy Quartet NGC 6845. The HI emission extends over all four galaxies but can only be associated clearly with the two spiral galaxies, NGC 6845A and B, which show signs of strong tidal interaction. We derive a total HI mass of at least 1.8 x 10^10 Msun, most of which is associated with NGC 6845A, the largest galaxy of the group. We investigate the tidal interaction between NGC 6845A and B by studying the kinematics of distinct HI components and their relation to the known HII regions. No HI emission is detec…
We observed two compact high-velocity clouds HVC 291+26+195 and HVC 297+09+253 to analyse their structure, dynamics, and physical parameters. In both cases there is evidence for an association with the Leading Arm of the Magellanic Clouds. The goal of our study is to learn more about the origin of the two CHVCs and to use them as probes for the structure and evolution of the Leading Arm. We have used the Parkes 64 m radio telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to study the two CHVCs in the 21 cm line emission of neutral hydrogen. We present a method to estimate the distance…
Aims: Investigation of the dense gas, the outflows and the continuum emission from the massive twin cores NGC6334I and I(N) at high spatial resolution. Methods: We imaged the region with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 3.4mm wavelength in continuum as well as CH3CN(5_K-4_K) and HCN(1-0) spectral line emission. Results: While the continuum emission in NGC6334I mainly traces the UCHII region, toward NGC6334I(N) we detect line emission from four of the previously identified dust continuum condensations that are of protostellar or pre-stellar nature. The CH3CN(5_K-4_K) lines are de…
The aim of this study is to investigate the nature of radio sources associated with young stellar objects (YSOs) belonging to the R CrA cluster. By combining the centimetre radio data with the wealth of shorter wavelength data accumulated recently we wish to refine estimates of the evolutionary stages of the YSOs. Fluxes and spectral indices for the brightest radio sources were derived from the observations at 3, 6, and 20 cm using the ATCA. Seven of detected sources can be assigned to YSOs, which have counterparts in the X-rays, infrared or submm. One of the YSOs, Radio Source 9, is a Class 0…
We present a systematic survey for ultracompact HII (UCHII) regions in the Magellanic Clouds. Understanding the physics of massive star formation (MSF) is a critical astrophysical problem. The study of MSF began in our galaxy with surveys of UCHII regions, but before now this has not been done for other galaxies. We selected candidates based on their Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) colors and imaged them at 3 and 6 cm with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Nearly all of the observed regions contain compact radio sources consistent with thermal emission. Many of the sources a…
We report on Australia Telescope observations of the massive star forming region G305.2+0.2 at 1.2 cm. We detected emission in five molecules towards G305A, confirming its hot core nature. We determined a rotational temperature of 26 K for methanol. A non-LTE excitation calculation suggests a kinematic temperature of order 200 K. A time dependent chemical model is also used to model the gas phase chemistry of the hot core associated with G305A. A comparison with the observations suggest an age of between 2 x10^4 and 1.5 x10^5 years. We also report on a feature to the SE of G305A which may show…
We present an analysis of dust grain emission in the diffuse interstellar medium of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This study is motivated by the availability of 170 microns ISOPHOT data covering a large part of the SMC, with a resolution enabling to disentangle the diffuse medium from the star forming regions. After data reduction and subtraction of Galactic foreground emission, we used the ISOPHOT data together with HiRes IRAS data and ATCA/Parkes combined HI column density maps to determine dust properties for the diffuse medium. We found a far infrared emissivity per hydrogen atom 30 ti…
We present Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) G296.8-00.3. A 1.3-GHz continuum image shows the remnant to have a complex multi-shelled appearance, with an unusual rectangular strip running through its centre. HI absorption yields a kinematic distance to the remnant of 9.6+/-0.6 kpc, from which we estimate an age in the range (2-10) x 10^3 yr. The ATCA's continuum mode allows a measurement of the Faraday rotation across the band, from which we derive a mean rotation measure towards the SNR of 430 rad m^(-2). We consider possible explanations for…
ATCA HI and radio continuum observations of the peculiar southern galaxy IC2554 and its surroundings reveal typical signatures of an interacting galaxy group. We detected a large HI cloud between IC2554 and the elliptical galaxy NGC3136B. The gas dynamics in IC2554 itself, which is sometimes described as a colliding pair, are surprisingly regular, whereas NGC3136B was not detected. The HI cloud, which emerges from IC2554 as a large arc-shaped plume, has a size of about 30 kpc, larger than that of IC2554. The total HI mass of the IC2554 system is about 2 x 10^9 Msun, a third of which resides in…
We have carried out a sensitive search for OH (1720 MHz) masers in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) toward five regions using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Our source list includes the 30 Doradus region, and four supernova remnants (SNRs): N44, N49, N120, and N132D. These data have a typical resolution of ~8 arcsec and rms noise levels of 5-10 mJy/beam. We have detected OH (1720 MHz) masers in the NE part of 30 Doradus and toward the SNR N49. The OH (1720 MHz) maser emission in 30 Doradus is coincident with a cluster of young stars known as ``Knot 1'', and is almost certainly o…
Three cometary-shaped objects in the giant HII region NGC 3603, originally found and identified as proto-planetary disks (ProPlyDs) by Brandner et al. 2000 using HST+VLT in the optical and near-infrared, have been detected with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) in the radio continuum at 3 and 6cm. All three ProPlyD-like objects are clearly resolved with an extent of a few arcseconds. The integrated 6cm fluxes are up to 1.3 times higher than the 3cm fluxes with spectral indices averaged over the whole clump between $α=-0.1$ and -0.5 ($S_ν\propto ν^α$), indicating the likely presence …
We have carried out a series of observations of the 1665- and 1667-MHz transitions of the 2Pi_3/2, J=3/2 OH ground state towards six selected HII regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (IRAS 05011-6815 and MRC 0510-689, 0513-694B, 0539-691, 0540-696B, 0540-697A) using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The study has provided the first accurate positions for known 1665- and 1667-MHz OH masers as well as detecting several new masers. The regions all contain H_2O or CH_3OH masers but OH masers were detected in only four. The 1.6-GHz continuum emission was also imaged to investigate its spatial…
We present the results of the first complete survey of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds for 6668-MHz methanol and 6035-MHz excited-state hydroxyl masers. In addition to the survey, higher-sensitivity targeted searches towards known star-formation regions were conducted. The observations yielded the discovery of a fourth 6668-MHz methanol maser in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), found towards the star-forming region N160a, and a second 6035-MHz excited-state hydroxyl maser, found towards N157a. We have also re-observed the three previously known 6668-MHz methanol masers and the single 60…
We present an analysis of a new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) radio-continuum observation of supernova remnant (SNR) G1.9+0.3, which at an age of $\sim$181$\pm$25 years is the youngest known in the Galaxy. We analysed all available radio-continuum observations at 6-cm from the ATCA and the Very Large Array. Using this data we estimate an expansion rate for G1.9+0.3 of 0.563%$\pm$0.078% per year between 1984 and 2009. We note that in the 1980's G1.9+0.3 expanded somewhat slower (0.484% per year) than more recently (0.641% per year). We estimate that the average spectral index between…
With the ATNF Mopra telescope we are performing a survey in the 12CO(1-0) line to map the molecular gas in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). For some regions we also obtained interferometric maps of the high density gas tracers HCO+ and HCN with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Here we discuss the properties of the elongated molecular complex that stretches about 2 kpc southward from 30 Doradus. Our data suggests that the complex, which we refer to as the ``molecular ridge,'' is not a coherent feature but consists of many smaller clumps that share the same formation history. Likel…
We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to search for continuum emission toward three strong 6.7-GHz methanol maser sources. For two of the sources, G339.88-1.26 and NGC 6334F (G351.42+0.64), we detect continuum emission closely associated with the methanol masers. A further three clusters of masers showed no radio continuum emission above our sensitivity limit of 1-5 mJy. We find the position of the 6.7-GHz methanol masers in G339.88-1.26 to be consistent with the hypothesis that the masers lie in the circumstellar disc surrounding a massive star. We also argue that one of t…
Using a Fourier-plane technique, we have merged HI ATCA and Parkes data sets providing an accurate set of images of the LMC sensitive to structure on scales of 15 pc (for an LMC distance of 55 kpc) upwards. The spatial dynamic range (2.8 orders of magnitude), velocity resolution (1.649 km/s), brightness temperature sensitivity (2.4 K) and column density sensitivity ($8.9 \times 10^ {18}$ cm$^{-2}$ per 1.649 km/s channel) allow for the studies of phenomena ranging from the galaxy-wide interaction of the LMC with its close neighbours to the small-scale injection of energy from supernovae and ste…
We present radio observations for 29 southern Seyfert galaxies selected from a volume limited sample with cz<3600 km s^-1, and declination delta<0degr. Objects with declination -30degr<delta<0degr were observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 6 cm (4.9 GHz) and objects with delta<-30degr were observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 3.5 cm (8.6 GHz). Both the VLA and the ATCA observations have a resolution of ~1arcsec. These new observations cover more than 50% of the southern sample with all but two of the 29 objects detected above our limit of 0.15 mJy. Combining thes…
CO observations have been so far the best way to trace molecular gas in external galaxies, but at low metallicity the gas mass deduced could be largely underestimated. At present, the kinematic information of CO data cubes are used to estimate virial masses and trace the total mass of the molecular clouds. Millimeter dust emission can also be used as a dense gas tracer and could unveil H2 envelopes lacking CO. These different tracers must be compared in different environments. This study compares virial masses to masses deduced from millimeter emission, in two GMC samples: the local molecular …
We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array to conduct a search for the simplest amino acid, glycine (conformers I and II), and the simple chiral molecule propylene oxide at 3-mm in the Sgr B2 LMH. We searched 15 portions of spectrum between 85 and 91 GHz, each of 64 MHz bandwidth, and detected 58 emission features and 21 absorption features, giving a line density of 75 emission lines and 25 absorption lines per GHz stronger than the 5 sigma level of 110 mJy. Of these, 19 are transitions previously detected in the interstellar medium, and we have made tentative assignments of a further …
A composite map of HI in the LMC using the ATCA interferometer and the Parkes multibeam telescope was analyzed in several ways in an attempt to characterize the structure of the neutral gas and to find an origin for it. Fourier transform power spectra in 1D, 2D, and in the azimuthal direction were found to be approximate power laws over 2 decades in length. Delta-variance methods also showed the same power-law structure. Detailed models of these data were made using line-of-sight integrals over fractals that are analogous to those generated by simulations of turbulence with and without phase t…
We present a Spitzer Space Telescope spectroscopic survey of mass-losing carbon stars (and one oxygen-rich star) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The spectra cover the wavelength range 5--38 micron. They show varying combinations of dust continuum, dust emission features (SiC, MgS) and molecular absorption bands (C2H2, HCN). A set of four narrow bands, dubbed the Manchester system, is used to define the infrared continuum for dusty carbon stars. The relations between the continuum colours and the strength of the dust and molecular features are studied, and are compared to Galactic stars of simil…
Supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud provides a spectacularly detailed view of the aftermath of a core-collapse explosion. The supernova ejecta initially coasted outward at more than 10% of the speed of light, but in 1990 were observed to decelerate rapidly as they began to encounter dense circumstellar material expelled by the progenitor star. The resulting shock has subsequently produced steadily brightening radio synchrotron emission, which is resolved by the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) into an expanding limb-brightened shell. Here we present 15 years of ATCA imaging o…
As a part of an ongoing effort to characterise the young stellar populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we present HST-WFPC2 broad and narrow band imaging of two fields with recent star formation activity in the Tarantula region. A population of objects with Halpha and/or Balmer continuum excess was identified. On account of the intense Halpha emission (equivalent widths up to several tens of Angstroms), its correlation with the Balmer continuum excess and the stars' location on the HR diagram, we interpret them as low mass (~1-2 Mo) Pre-Main Sequence stars. In this framework, the data sho…
We present an atlas of 57 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 37 Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) observations obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite. The atlas highlights twelve interstellar absorption line transitions at a resolution of ~15 km/s. These transitions cover a broad range of temperatures, ionization states, and abundances. The species included are OVI, which probes hot (T~3x10^5 K) ionized gas; CIII and FeIII, which probe warm (T~10^4 K) ionized gas; SiII, PII, CII, FeII, and OI, warm neutral gas; and six different molecular hydrogen transitions, which…
We have used the instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope to study the Large Magellanic Cloud supernova remnants (SNRs) N11L, N44, N49, N206, N63A, and N157B. The two large SNRs N44 and N206 were not detected in any IRAC or MIPS wavebands; the remainder were detected at one or more wavelengths. In particular, the SNRs N49 and N63A each had features that were evident in all available IRAC and MIPS bands. Each of these two also displayed faint limb emission in the MIPS 24 micron band only. IRS spectra obtained for the N49 SNR showed a number of prominent lines, with little continuum contributi…
We present ground-based 3 micron spectra of obscured Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs). We identify the carbon stars on the basis of the 3.1 micron absorption by HCN and C2H2 molecules. We show evidence for the existence of carbon stars up to the highest AGB luminosities (Mbol=-7 mag, for a distance modulus to the LMC of 18.7 mag). This proves that Hot Bottom Burning (HBB) cannot, in itself, prevent massive AGB stars from becoming carbon star before leaving the AGB. It also sets an upper limit to the distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud of 18.8 mag. T…
We have obtained linear polarization measurements of the Large Magellanic Cloud B[e] supergiant S 111 using optical imaging polarimetry. The intrinsic polarization found is consistent with the presence of an axisymmetric circumstellar envelope. We have additionally estimated the electron density for S 111 using data from the literature and revisited the correlation between polarization and envelope parameters of the B[e] supergiant stars using more recent IR calibration color data. The data suggest that the polarization can be indeed explained by electron scattering. We have used Monte Carlo c…
Planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds (LMC, SMC) offer a unique opportunity to study both the population and evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars in an environment which is free of the distance scale bias that hinder Galactic PN studies. The emission shown by PNe in the 5-40 $μ$m range is characterized by the presence of a combination of solid state features (from the dust grains) and nebular emission lines over-imposed on a strong dust continuum. We acquired low resolution IRS spectroscopy of a selected sample of LMC and SMC PNe whose morphology, size, central star brightn…
We present the results of a first campaign of radio continuum observations toward supergiants with spectral types in the range O8 - B3. Three targets out of twelve were detected with the ATCA and the VLA. The measured fluxes and the upper limits yielded values of the stellar mass-loss rates dM/dt and the wind efficiencies. The comparison of predicted and derived values of dM/dt shows a good agreement.
We have produced an atlas of Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectra of mass-losing, evolved stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These stars were selected to have high mass-loss rates and so contribute significantly to the return of processed materials to the ISM. Our high-quality spectra enable the determination of the chemistry of the circumstellar envelope from the mid-IR spectral features and continuum. We have classified the spectral types of the stars and show that the spectral types separate clearly in infrared color-color diagrams constructed from 2MASS data and synthetic IRAC/MIP…
We present mid-infrared spectral mapping observations of the core-collapse supernova remnant 1E 0102.2-7219 in the Small Magellanic Cloud using the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The remnant shows emission from fine structure transitions of neon and oxygen as well as continuum emission from dust. Comparison of the mid-IR dust emission with observations at x-ray, radio and optical wavelengths shows that the dust is associated with the supernova ejecta and is thus newly formed in the remnant. The spectrum of the newly formed dust is well reproduced by a model that in…
New AAT near-infrared and SEST 12CO J=2-1 observations are combined with existing ISO mid-infrared and ATCA cm radio continuum observations to examine the protostellar content of the Bok globule BHR 71. Together with observations of Herbig-Haro objects, these data show: (1) Two protostellar sources, IRS1 and IRS2, with a separation of ~17 arcsec (3400 AU) are located within BHR 71. (2) Each protostar is driving its own molecular outflow. The outflow from IRS1 is much larger in extent, is more massive, and dominates the CO emission. (3) Both protostars are associated with Herbig-Haro objects an…
(Abridged) Some 240 blue stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud are investigated on their fantastic irregular continuum variability. We report here two results regarding these stars. First, their optical flux excess is correlated to their near-IR flux excess, as determined from optical EROSII light curves and 2MASS measurements. Second, the relation between optical colour and magnitude is observed to be bi-valued in 40% of the cases, resulting in a "loop" when the light curve is presented in a colour-magnitude diagram. We argue that optical variability for a large fraction of the variable stars i…
We present radio observations of comet 9P/Tempel 1 associated with the Deep Impact spacecraft collision of 2005 July 4. Weak 18-cm OH emission was detected with the Parkes 64-m telescope, in data averaged over July 4 to 6, at a level of 12 +/- 3 mJy km/s, corresponding to OH production rate 2.8 x 10^{28} molecules/second (Despois et al. inversion model, or 1.0 x 10^{28} /s for the Schleicher & A'Hearn model). We did not detect the HCN 1-0 line with the Mopra 22-m telescope over the period July 2 to 6. The 3 sigma limit of 0.06 K km/s for HCN on July 4 after the impact gives the limit to the HC…
We have measured the present accretion rate of roughly 800 low-mass (~1-1.4 Mo) pre-Main Sequence stars in the field of Supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC, Z~0.3 Zo). It is the first time that this fundamental parameter for star formation is determined for low-mass stars outside our Galaxy. The Balmer continuum emission used to derive the accretion rate positively correlates with the Halpha excess. Both these phenomena are believed to originate from accretion from a circumstellar disk so that their simultaneous detection provides an important confirmation of the pre-Main Sequen…
We present IRAC and MIPS images and photometry of a sample of previously known planetary nebulae (PNe) from the SAGE survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) performed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Of the 233 known PNe in the survey field, 185 objects were detected in at least two of the IRAC bands, and 161 detected in the MIPS 24 micron images. Color-color and color-magnitude diagrams are presented using several combinations of IRAC, MIPS, and 2MASS magnitudes. The location of an individual PN in the color-color diagrams is seen to depend on the relative contributions of the spectral co…
We present 5 - 40 micron spectroscopy of 41 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds, observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra show the presence of a combination of nebular emission lines and solid-state features from dust, superimposed on the thermal IR continuum. By analyzing the 25 LMC and 16 SMC PNe in our sample we found that the IR spectra of 14 LMC and 4 SMC PNe are dominated by nebular emission lines, while the other spectra show solid-state features. We observed that the solid-state features are compatible with carbon-rich dust …
We report sensitive ATCA radio-continuum observations toward IRAS 15596-5301 and 16272-4837, two luminous objects (> 2x10^4 Lsun) thought to represent massive star-forming regions in early stages of evolution (due to previously undetected radio emission at the 1-sigma level of 2 mJy per beam). Also reported are 1.2-millimeter continuum and a series of molecular-line observations made with the SEST telescope. For IRAS 15596-5301, the observations reveal the presence of three distinct compact radio-continuum sources associated with a dense molecular core. We suggest that this core contains a clu…
Integrated spectroscopy of a sample of 17 blue concentrated Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) clusters is presented and its spectral evolution studied. The spectra span the range ~3600-6800A with a resolution of ~14A FWHM, being used to determine cluster ages and, in connection with their spatial distribution, to explore the LMC structure and cluster formation history. Cluster reddening values were estimated by interpolation, using the available extinction maps. We used two methods to derive cluster ages: (i) template matching, in which line strengths and continuum distribution of the cluster spect…
We present a search for star-forming satellite galaxies that are close enough to their parent galaxies to be considered analogues of the Magellanic Clouds. Our search technique relied on the detection of the satellites in continuum-subtracted narrow-band H alpha imaging of the central galaxies, which removes most of the background and foreground line-of-sight companions, thus giving a high probability that we are detecting true satellites. The search was performed for 119 central galaxies at distances between 20 and 40 Mpc, although spatial incompleteness means that we have effectively searche…
With the goal of deriving the physical and chemical conditions of star forming regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a spectral line survey of the prominent star forming region N113 is presented. The observations cover parts of the frequency range from 85 GHz to 357 GHz and include 63 molecular transitions from a total of 16 species, among them spectra of rare isotopologues. Maps of selected molecular lines as well as the 1.2 mm continuum distribution are also presented. Molecular abundances in the core of the complex are found to be consistent with a photon dominated region (PDR) that …
We present a new multi-wavelength study of supernova remnant (SNR) B0513-692 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The remnant also has a strong, superposed, essentially unresolved, but unrelated radio source at its north-western edge, J051324-691049. This is identified as a likely compact HII region based on related optical imaging and spectroscopy. We use the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 4790 and 8640 MHz to determine the large scale morphology, spectral index and polarization characteristics of B0513-692 for the first time. We detect a strongly polarized region (49%) in the re…
The low-mass star formation region associated with the reflection nebula Cederblad 110 in the Chamaeleon I cloud was mapped with the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 6 and 3.5cm. Altogether 11 sources were detected, three of which are previously known low mass young stellar objects associated with the nebula: the illuminating star IRS2 (Class III, Einstein X-ray source CHX7), the brightest far-infrared source IRS4 (Class I), and the weak X-ray source CHX10a (Class III). The other young stellar objects in the region, including the Class 0 protostar candidate Cha-MMS1, were not detec…
The supernova remnant (SNR) N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud has been observed with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on board the {\it Chandra X-Ray Observatory}. The superb angular resolution of the {\it Chandra}/ACIS images resolves a point source, the likely X-ray counterpart of soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 0526$-$66, and the diffuse filaments and knots across the SNR. These filamentary features represent the blast wave sweeping through the ambient interstellar medium and nearby dense molecular clouds. We detect metal-rich ejecta beyond the main blast wave shock boundary in the …
We have observed an evolved star with a rare combination of spectral features, MSX SMC 029, in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using the low-resolution modules of the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. A cool dust continuum dominates the spectrum of MSX SMC 029. The spectrum also shows both emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and absorption at 13.7 micron from C2H2, a juxtaposition seen in only two other sources, AFGL 2688 and IRAS 13416-6243, both post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) objects. As in these sources, the PAH spectrum has the unusual trait that …
