We re-examine claims that anthropic arguments provide an explanation for the observed smallness of the cosmological constant, and argue that correlations between the cosmological constant value and the existence of life can be demonstrated only under restrictive assumptions. Causal effects are more subtle to uncover.

Anthropic Reasoning and Quantum Cosmology

Prediction in quantum cosmology requires a specification of the universe's quantum dynamics and its quantum state. We expect only a few general features of the universe to be predicted with probabilities near unity conditioned on the dynamics and quantum state alone. Typicality, Freak Observers and the Anthropic Principle of Existence

We propose an alternative anthropic probability for calculating the probabilities in eternal inflation. This anthropic probability follows naturally from the weak anthropic principle, and does not suffer the freak observer or the typicality problems. The problem that our observed cosmological constant is not at the peak of the usual anthropic probability distribution is also solved using this proposal.

An Infrared Divergence Problem in the cosmological measure theory and the anthropic reasoning

An anthropic principle has made it possible to answer the difficult question of why the observable value of cosmological constant ($Λ\sim 10^{-47}$ GeV${}^4$) is so disconcertingly tiny compared to predicted value of vacuum energy density $ρ_{SUSY}\sim 10^{12}$ GeV${}^4$. Cosmological constant: relaxation vs multiverse

We consider a scalar field with a bottom-less potential, such as $g^3 ϕ$, finding that cosmologies unavoidably end up with a crunch, late enough to be compatible with observations if $g \lesssim 1.2 H_0^{2/3} M_{\rm Pl}^{1/3}$. If rebounces avoid singularities, the multiverse acquires new features; in particular probabilities avoid some of the usual ambiguities. Testing anthropic reasoning for the cosmological constant with a realistic galaxy formation model

The anthropic principle is one of the possible explanations for the cosmological constant ($Λ$) problem. In previous studies, a dark halo mass threshold comparable with our Galaxy must be assumed in galaxy formation to get a reasonably large probability of finding the observed small value, $P(<$$Λ_{\rm obs})$, though stars are found in much smaller galaxies as well. Probabilities in the Arkani-Hamed-Dimopolous-Kachru landscape

In a previous paper we found that in the context of the string theory ``discretuum'' proposed by Bousso and Polchinski, the cosmological constant probability distribution varies wildly. Predictions of the causal entropic principle for environmental conditions of the universe

The causal entropic principle has been proposed as a superior alternative to the anthropic principle for understanding the magnitude of the cosmological constant. In this approach, the probability to create observers is assumed to be proportional to the entropy production ΔS in a maximal causally connected region -- the causal diamond. Sinks in the Landscape, Boltzmann Brains, and the Cosmological Constant Problem

This paper extends the recent investigation of the string theory landscape in hep-th/0605266, where it was found that the decay rate of dS vacua to a collapsing space with a negative vacuum energy can be quite large. The parts of space that experience a decay to a collapsing space, or to a Minkowski vacuum, never return back to dS space. Predicting the cosmological constant with the scale-factor cutoff measure

It is well known that anthropic selection from a landscape with a flat prior distribution of cosmological constant Lambda gives a reasonable fit to observation. However, a realistic model of the multiverse has a physical volume that diverges with time, and the predicted distribution of Lambda depends on how the spacetime volume is regulated.
