On the (circular) polarization-independence of microwave-induced resistance oscillations and zero resistance state

Demonstration of high sensitivity of microwave-induced resistance oscillations to circular polarization

We demonstrate that long-debated immunity of microwave-induced resistance oscillations (MIRO) to the sense of circular polarization is not a generic property of this phenomenon in solid-state two-dimensional electron systems. Using a large-area GaAs-based heterostructure we detect up to 30 times larger MIRO signal for the cyclotron resonance (CR) active helicity, fully consistent with the concurrently measured transmission and the deduced CR shape of the Drude absorption. We further elaborate conditions to avoid extrinsic factors capable of producing an apparent immunity of the photoresponse.

Circular polarization dependent study of the microwave photoconductivity in a two-dimensional electron system

The polarization dependence of the low field microwave photoconductivity and absorption of a two-dimensional electron system has been investigated in a quasi-optical setup in which linear and any circular polarization can be produced in-situ. The microwave induced resistance oscillations and the zero resistance regions are notedly immune to the sense of circular polarization. This observation is discrepant with a number of proposed theories. Deviations only occur near the cyclotron resonance absorption where an unprecedented large resistance response is observed.

Electrical Switching Dynamics in Circular and Rectangular Ge2Sb2Te5 Nanopillar Phase Change Memory Devices

We have measured the critical phase change conditions induced by electrical pulses in Ge2Sb2Te5 nanopillar phase change memory devices by constructing a comprehensive resistance map as a function of pulse parameters (width, amplitude and trailing edge). Polarization immunity of magnetoresistivity response under Microwave excitation

We analyze theoretically the dependence of the microwave polarization sate and sense on the magnetoresistivity response of two-dimensional electron systems. Linear and circular polarization have been considered with different senses and directions. We discuss the polarization dependence of the longitudinal magnetoresistivity and propose an explanation for the experimentally observed polarization immunity, i.e., resistivity oscillations and zero resistance state regions are unaffected by the sense of circular polarization or by the direction of microwave electric field.

Synchronization theory of microwave induced zero-resistance states

We develop the synchronization theory of microwave induced zero-resistance states (ZRS) for two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field. In this theory the dissipative effects lead to synchronization of cyclotron phase with driving microwave phase at certain resonant ratios between microwave and cyclotron frequencies. This synchronization produces stabilization of electron transport along edge channels and at the same time it gives suppression of dissipative scattering on local impurities and dissipative conductivity in the bulk, thus creating the ZRS phases at that frequency ratios.
