We introduce a new technique to detect separable states using semidefinite programs. This approach provides a sufficient condition for separability of a state that is based on the existence of a certain local linear map applied to a known separable state. When a state is shown to be separable, a proof of this fact is provided in the form of an explicit convex decomposition of the state in terms of product states. All states in the interior of the set of separable states can be detected in this way, except maybe for a set of measure zero. Even though this technique is more suited for a numerical approach, a new analytical criterion for separability can also be derived.
Given integers n $\geq$ m, let Sep(n,m) be the set of separable states on the Hilbert space $\mathbb{C}^n \otimes \mathbb{C}^m$. It is well-known that for (n,m)=(3,2) the set of separable states has a simple description using semidefinite programming: it is given by the set of states that have a positive partial transpose. In this paper we show that for larger values of n and m the set Sep(n,m) has no semidefinite programming description of finite size. As Sep(n,m) is a semialgebraic set this provides a new counterexample to the Helton-Nie conjecture, which was recently disproved by Scheiderer…
Let K, K' be convex cones residing in finite-dimensional real vector spaces E, E'. An element in the tensor product E \otimes E' is K \otimes K'-separable if it can be represented as finite sum \sum_l x_l \otimes x'_l with x_l \in K and x_l' \in K' for all l. Let S(n), H(n), Q(n) be the spaces of n x n real symmetric, complex hermitian and quaternionic hermitian matrices, respectively. Let further S_+(n), H_+(n), Q_+(n) be the cones of positive semidefinite matrices in these spaces. If a matrix in H(mn) = H(m) \otimes H(n) is H_+(m) \otimes H_+(n)-separable, then it fulfills also the so-called…
Semidefinite programs (SDPs) are a framework for exact or approximate optimization that have widespread application in quantum information theory. We introduce a new method for using reductions to construct integrality gaps for SDPs. These are based on new limitations on the sum-of-squares (SoS) hierarchy in approximating two particularly important sets in quantum information theory, where previously no $ω(1)$-round integrality gaps were known: the set of separable (i.e. unentangled) states, or equivalently, the $2 \rightarrow 4$ norm of a matrix, and the set of quantum correlations; i.e. cond…
Quantum correlations in composite and separable quantum systems are characterized by non-vanishing quantum discord. We demonstrate the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of hermitian witness operators for quantum discord, bypassing the problem of non-convexity of the set of all classical states. We propose an example of a linear witness which can detect quantum correlations in large classes of separable bipartite systems. Decomposition of the witness in terms of a small number of locally measurable operators as shown here, paves the way for experimental detection of quantum corr…
In this paper we propose a sequence of tests which gives a definitive test for checking $2\times M$ separability. The test is definitive in the sense that each test corresponds to checking membership in a cone, and that the closure of the union of all these cones consists exactly of {\it all} $2 \times M$ separable states. Membership in each single cone may be checked via semidefinite programming, and is thus a tractable problem. This sequential test comes about by considering the dual problem, the characterization of all positive maps acting ${\mathbb C}^{2 \times 2} \to {\mathbb C}^{M\times …
We investigate the problem of finding the optimal convex decomposition of a bipartite quantum state into a separable part and a positive remainder, in which the weight of the separable part is maximal. This weight is naturally identified with the degree of separability of the state. In a recent work, the problem was solved for two-qubit states using semidefinite programming. In this paper, we describe a procedure to obtain the optimal decomposition of a bipartite state of any finite dimension via a sequence of semidefinite relaxations. The sequence of decompositions thus obtained is shown to c…
The separability detecting problem of mixed states is one of the fundamental problems in quantum information theory. In the last 20 years, almost all methods are based on the sufficient or necessary conditions for entanglement. However, in this paper, we only need one algorithm to solve the problem. We propose a tensor optimization method to check whether an $m$-partite quantum mixed state is separable or not and give a decomposition for it if it is. We first convert the separability discrimination problem of mixed states to the positive Hermitian decomposition problem of Hermitian tensors. Th…
We introduce a sequence of numerical tests that can determine the entanglement or separability of a state even when there is not enough information to completely determine its density matrix. Given partial information about the state in the form of linear constraints on the density matrix, the sequence of tests can prove that either all states satisfying the constraints are entangled, or there is at least one separable state that satisfies them. The algorithm works even if the values of the constraints are only known to fall in a certain range. If the states are entangled, an entanglement witn…
While entanglement is believed to be an important ingredient in understanding quantum many-body physics, the complexity of its characterization scales very unfavorably with the size of the system. Finding super-sets of the set of separable states that admit a simpler description has proven to be a fruitful approach in the bipartite setting. In this paper we discuss a systematic way of characterizing multiparticle entanglement via various relaxations. We furthermore describe an operational witness construction arising from such relaxations that is capable of detecting every entangled state. Fin…
We briefly review a recently proposed method to detect properties of quantum noise processes and quantum channels. We illustrate in detail the method for detecting non separable random unitary channels and consider in particular the explicit examples of the CNOT and CZ gates. We analyse their robustness in the presence of noise for several quantum noise models.
We consider the entanglement marginal problem, which consists of deciding whether a number of reduced density matrices are compatible with an overall separable quantum state. To tackle this problem, we propose hierarchies of semidefinite programming relaxations of the set of quantum state marginals admitting a fully separable extension. We connect the completeness of each hierarchy to the resolution of an analog classical marginal problem and thus identify relevant experimental situations where the hierarchies are complete. For finitely many parties on a star configuration or a chain, we find …
We provide a class of inequalities for detecting entanglements in multi-mode systems. Necessary conditions for fully separable, bi-separable and sufficient conditions for fully entangled states are explicitly presented.
We propose separability criteria for three-qubit states in terms of diagonal and anti-diagonal entries to detect entanglement with positive partial transposes. We report that the phases, that is, the angular parts of anti-diagonal entries, play a crucial role in determining whether a given three-qubit state is separable or entangled, and they must obey even an identity for separability in some cases. These criteria are strong enough to detect PPT (positive partial transpose) entanglement with nonzero volume. In several cases when all the entries are zero except for diagonal and anti-diagonal e…

The positive partial transpose test is one of the main criteria for detecting entanglement, and the set of states with positive partial transpose is considered as an approximation of the set of separable states. However, we do not know to what extent this criterion, as well as the approximation, are efficient. In this paper, we show that the positive partial transpose test gives no bound on the distance of a density matrix from separable states. More precisely, we prove that, as the dimension of the space tends to infinity, the maximum trace distance of a positive partial transpose state from …
In this paper, we study the separability of quantum states in bosonic system. Our main tool here is the "separability witnesses", and a connection between "separability witnesses" and a new kind of positivity of matrices--- "Power Positive Matrices" is drawn. Such connection is employed to demonstrate that multi-qubit quantum states with Dicke states being its eigenvectors is separable if and only if two related Hankel matrices are positive semidefinite. By employing this criterion, we are able to show that such state is separable if and only if it's partial transpose is non-negative, which co…
We devise a novel protocol to detect genuinely multipartite entangled states by harnessing quantum non-Markovian operations. We utilize a particular type of non-Markovianity known as the eternal non-Markovianity to construct a non-complete positive map to filter out the bi-separable states and detect genuine multipartite entanglement. We further propose a witness operator to detect genuinely multipartite entangled states experimentally based on this theory. Our study sheds light on a hitherto unexplored connection between entanglement theory and quantum non-Markovianity.
One of the important approaches to detect quantum entanglement is using linear entanglement witnesses EWs. In this paper, by determining the envelope of the boundary hyper-planes defined by a family of linear EWs, a set of powerful nonlinear optimal EWs is manipulated. These EWs enable us to detect some three qubits bound MUB (mutually unbiased bases) diagonal entangled states, i.e., the PPT (positive partial transpose) entangled states. Also, in some particular cases, the introduced nonlinear optimal EWs are powerful enough to separate the bound entangled regions from the separable ones. Fina…
We construct a single observable measurement of which mean value on four copies of an {\it unknown} two-qubit state is sufficient for unambiguous decision whether the state is separable or entangled. In other words, there exists a universal collective entanglement witness detecting all two-qubit entanglement. The test is directly linked to a function which characterizes to some extent the entanglement quantitatively. This function is an entanglement monotone under so--called local pure operations and classical communication (pLOCC) which preserve local dimensions. Moreover it provides tight up…
The problem on detecting the entanglement of a bipartite state is significant in quantum information theory. In this article, we apply the Ky Fan norm to the revised realignment matrix of a bipartite state. Specifially, we consider a family of separable criteria for bipartite states, and present when the density matrix corresponds to a state is real, the criteria is equivalent to the enhanced realignment criterion. Moreover, we present analytical lower bounds of concurrence and the convex-roof extended negativity for arbitrary dimensional systems.
One of the most important problems in quantum information is the separability problem, which asks whether a given quantum state is separable. We investigate multipartite states of rank at most four which are PPT (i.e., all their partial transposes are positive semidefinite). We show that any PPT state of rank two or three is separable and has length at most four. For separable states of rank four, we show that they have length at most six. It is six only for some qubit-qutrit or multiqubit states. It turns out that any PPT entangled state of rank four is necessarily supported on a 3x3 or a 2x2…
We present a quasipolynomial-time algorithm for solving the weak membership problem for the convex set of separable, i.e. non-entangled, bipartite density matrices. The algorithm decides whether a density matrix is separable or whether it is eps-away from the set of the separable states in time exp(O(eps^-2 log |A| log |B|)), where |A| and |B| are the local dimensions, and the distance is measured with either the Euclidean norm, or with the so-called LOCC norm. The latter is an operationally motivated norm giving the optimal probability of distinguishing two bipartite quantum states, each shar…
The reduction criterion is a well known necessary condition for separable states, and states violating this condition are entangled and also 1-distillable. In this paper we introduce a new set of necessary conditions for separability of multipartite states, obtained from a set of positive but not completely positive maps. These conditions can be thought of as generalisations of the reduction criterion to multipartite systems. We use tripartite Werner states as an example to investigate the entanglement detecting powers of some of these new conditions, and we also look at what these conditions …
