Time-delayed feedback methods can be used to control unstable periodic orbits as well as unstable steady states. We present an application of extended time delay autosynchronization introduced by Socolar et al. to an unstable focus. This system represents a generic model of an unstable steady state which can be found for instance in a Hopf bifurcation. In addition to the original controller design, we investigate effects of control loop latency and a bandpass filter on the domain of control. Furthermore, we consider coupling of the control force to the system via a rotational coupling matrix parametrized by a variable phase. We present an analysis of the domain of control and support our results by numerical calculations.
We analyze the stabilization of unstable steady states by delayed feedback control with a periodic time-varying delay in the regime of a high-frequency modulation of the delay. The average effect of the delayed feedback term in the control force is equivalent to a distributed delay in the interval of the modulation, and the obtained distribution depends on the type of the modulation. In our analysis we use a simple generic normal form of an unstable focus, and investigate the effects of phase-dependent coupling and the influence of the control loop latency on the controllability. In addition, …
Difference control schemes for controlling unstable fixed points become important if the exact position of the fixed point is unavailable or moving due to drifting parameters. We propose a memory difference control method for stabilization of a priori unknown unstable fixed points by introducing a memory term. If the amplitude of the control applied in the previous time step is added to the present control signal, fixed points with arbitrary Lyapunov numbers can be controlled. This method is also extended to compensate arbitrary time steps of measurement delay. We show that our method stabiliz…
For many years it was believed that an unstable periodic orbit with an odd number of real Floquet multipliers greater than unity cannot be stabilized by the time-delayed feedback control mechanism of Pyragus. A recent paper by Fiedler et al uses the normal form of a subcritical Hopf bifurcation to give a counterexample to this theorem. Using the Lorenz equations as an example, we demonstrate that the stabilization mechanism identified by Fiedler et al for the Hopf normal form can also apply to unstable periodic orbits created by subcritical Hopf bifurcations in higher-dimensional dynamical sys…
We present an analysis of time-delayed feedback control used to stabilize an unstable steady state of a neutral delay differential equation. Stability of the controlled system is addressed by studying the eigenvalue spectrum of a corresponding characteristic equation with two time delays. An analytic expression for the stabilizing control strength is derived in terms of original system parameters and the time delay of the control. Theoretical and numerical results show that the interplay between the control strength and two time delays provides a number of regions in the parameter space where …
We show that Pyragas delayed feedback control can stabilize an unstable periodic orbit (UPO) that arises from a generic subcritical Hopf bifurcation of a stable equilibrium in an n-dimensional dynamical system. This extends results of Fiedler et al. [PRL 98, 114101 (2007)], who demonstrated that such feedback control can stabilize the UPO associated with a two-dimensional subcritical Hopf normal form. Pyragas feedback requires an appropriate choice of a feedback gain matrix for stabilization, as well as knowledge of the period of the targeted UPO. We apply feedback in the directions tangent to…
We study the stability of unstable steady states in scalar retarded time-delayed systems subjected to a variable-delay feedback control. The important aspect of such a control problem is that time-delayed systems are already infinite-dimensional before the delayed feedback control is turned on. When the frequency of the modulation is large compared to the system's dynamics, the analytic approach consists of relating the stability properties of the resulting variable-delay system with those of an analogous distributed delay system. Otherwise, the stability domains are obtained by a numerical in…
We refute an often invoked theorem which claims that a periodic orbit with an odd number of real Floquet multipliers greater than unity can never be stabilized by time-delayed feedback control in the form proposed by Pyragas. Using a generic normal form, we demonstrate that the unstable periodic orbit generated by a subcritical Hopf bifurcation, which has a single real unstable Floquet multiplier, can in fact be stabilized. We derive explicit analytical conditions for the control matrix in terms of the amplitude and the phase of the feedback control gain, and present a numerical example. Our r…
We study the stability of the fixed-point solution of an array of mutually coupled logistic maps, focusing on the influence of the delay times, $τ_{ij}$, of the interaction between the $i$th and $j$th maps. Two of us recently reported [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 94}, 134102 (2005)] that if $τ_{ij}$ are random enough the array synchronizes in a spatially homogeneous steady state. Here we study this behavior by comparing the dynamics of a map of an array of $N$ delayed-coupled maps with the dynamics of a map with $N$ self-feedback delayed loops. If $N$ is sufficiently large, the dynamics of a map of …
In present paper we discuss the control of complex spatio-temporal dynamics in a {spatially extended} non-linear system (fluid model of Pierce diode) based on the concepts of controlling chaos in the systems with few degrees of freedom. A presented method is connected with stabilization of unstable homogeneous equilibrium state and the unstable spatio-temporal periodical states analogous to unstable periodic orbits of chaotic dynamics of the systems with few degrees of freedom. We show that this method is effective and allows to achieve desired regular dynamics chosen from a number of possible…
We demonstrate that time-delayed feedback control can be improved by adaptively tuning the feedback gain. This adaptive controller is applied to the stabilization of an unstable fixed point and an unstable periodic orbit embedded in a chaotic attractor. The adaptation algorithm is constructed using the speed-gradient method of control theory. Our computer simulations show that the adaptation algorithm can find an appropriate value of the feedback gain for single and multiple delays. Furthermore, we show that our method is robust to noise and different initial conditions.
We study chaotic synchronization in networks with time-delayed coupling. We introduce the notion of strong and weak chaos, distinguished by the scaling properties of the maximum Lyapunov exponent within the synchronization manifold for large delay times, and relate this to the condition for stable or unstable chaotic synchronization, respectively. In simulations of laser models and experiments with electronic circuits, we identify transitions from weak to strong and back to weak chaos upon monotonically increasing the coupling strength.
The Pyragas method of feedback control has attracted much interest as a method of stabilising unstable periodic orbits in a number of situations. We show that a time-delayed feedback control similar to the Pyragas method can be used to stabilise periodic orbits with arbitrarily large period, specifically those resulting from a resonant bifurcation of a heteroclinic cycle. Our analysis reduces the infinite-dimensional delay-equation governing the system with feedback to a three-dimensional map, by making certain assumptions about the form of the solutions. The stability of a fixed point in this…
The stabilization of steady states is studied in a modified Lang-Kobayashi model of a semiconductor laser. We show that multiple time-delayed feedback, realized by a Fabry-Perot resonator coupled to the laser, provides a valuable tool for the suppression of unwanted intensity pulsations, and leads to stable continuous-wave operation. The domains of control are calulated in dependence on the feedback strength, delay time (cavity round trip time), memory parameter (mirror reflectivity), latency time, feedback phase, and bandpass filtering, Due to the optical feedback, multistable behavior can al…
When a chaotic system is to be stabilized to a unstable orbit, delayed measurement of the system limits the applicability of chaos control techniqes. These limitations are analyzed and control schemes as linear predictive logging control (LPLC) and memory difference control (MDC) are introduced which can overcome those limitations for chaos control schemes that act in the Poincaré section as Ott-Grebogi-Yorke (OGY) control and Bielawski-Derozier_Glorieux control (difference control).
When stabilization of unstable periodic orbits or fixed points by the method given by Ott, Grebogi and Yorke (OGY) has to be based on a measurement delayed by $τ$ orbit lengths, the performance of unmodified OGY method is expected to decline. For experimental considerations, it is desired to know the range of stability with minimal knowledge of the system. We find that unmodified OGY control fails beyond a maximal Ljapunov number of $λ_{max}=1+\frac{1}τ$. In this paper the area of stability is investigated both for OGY control of known fixed points and for difference control of unknown or inac…
We reinvestigate the dynamical behavior of a first order scalar nonlinear delay differential equation with piecewise linearity and identify several interesting features in the nature of bifurcations and chaos associated with it as a function of the delay time and external forcing parameters. In particular, we point out that the fixed point solution exhibits a stability island in the two parameter space of time delay and strength of nonlinearity. Significant role played by transients in attaining steady state solutions is pointed out. Various routes to chaos and existence of hyperchaos even for…
Delayed feedback laser dynamics is described by means of Lang-Kobayashi equation model. Since a lot of initial states asymptotically approach to periodic attractor in the phase space, only periodic steady-state regimes have been studied here. Lyapunov transformation allows us to reduce problem to the differential equation of the first order whereas the spectrum of laser oscillation is governed by the appropriate eigen value problem. Using the symmetry proves that there is the dual laser system with anticipated feedback which has the same dynamic characteristics as laser with delayed feedback.
The Pyragas method for controlling chaos is investigated in detail from the experimental as well as theoretical point of view. We show by an analytical stability analysis that the revolution around an unstable periodic orbit governs the success of the control scheme. Our predictions concerning the transient behaviour of the control signal are confirmed by numerical simulations and an electronic circuit experiment.
RNA interference (RNAi) is a fundamental cellular process that inhibits gene expression through cleavage and destruction of target mRNA. It is responsible for a number of important intracellular functions, from being the first line of immune defence against pathogens to regulating development and morphogenesis. In this paper we consider a mathematical model of RNAi with particular emphasis on time delays associated with two aspects of primed amplification: binding of siRNA to aberrant RNA, and binding of siRNA to mRNA, both of which result in the expanded production of dsRNA responsible for RN…
This paper deals with the global stability of time-delayed dynamical networks. We show that for a time-delayed dynamical network with non-distributed delays the network and the corresponding non-delayed network are both either globally stable or unstable. We demonstrate that this may not be the case if the network's delays are distributed. The main tool in our analysis is a new procedure of dynamical network restrictions. This procedure is useful in that it allows for improved estimates of a dynamical network's global stability. Moreover, it is a computationally simpler and much more effective…
This paper analyses the dynamics of infectious disease with a concurrent spread of disease awareness. The model includes local awareness due to contacts with aware individuals, as well as global awareness due to reported cases of infection and awareness campaigns. We investigate the effects of time delay in response of unaware individuals to available information on the epidemic dynamics by establishing conditions for the Hopf bifurcation of the endemic steady state of the model. Analytical results are supported by numerical bifurcation analysis and simulations.
We study the dynamics of the sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly using a model of the temporal patterns of two sub-regions, mimicking behaviour similar to El Niño Southern Oscillations (ENSO). Specifically, we present the existence, stability, and basins of attraction of the solutions arising in the model system in the space of these parameters: self delay, delay and inter-region coupling strengths. The emergence or suppression of oscillations in our models is a dynamical feature of utmost relevance, as it signals the presence or absence of ENSO-like oscillations. In contrast to the well-kno…
We study the synchronization and stability of power grids within the Kuramoto phase oscillator model with inertia with a bimodal frequency distribution representing the generators and the loads. We identify critical nodes through solitary frequency deviations and Lyapunov vectors corresponding to unstable Lyapunov exponents. To cure dangerous deviations from synchronization we propose time-delayed feedback control, which is an efficient control concept in nonlinear dynamic systems. Different control strategies are tested and compared with respect to the minimum number of controlled nodes requi…
In the studies of plant infections, the plant immune response is known to play an essential role. In this paper we derive and analyse a new mathematical model of plant immune response with particular account for post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS). Besides biologically accurate representation of the PTGS dynamics, the model explicitly includes two time delays to represent the maturation time of the growing plant tissue and the non-instantaneous nature of the PTGS. Through analytical and numerical analysis of stability of the steady states of the model we identify parameter regions assoc…
We present a control scheme that is able to find and stabilize an unstable chaotic regime in a system with a large number of interacting particles. This allows us to track a high dimensional chaotic attractor through a bifurcation where it loses its attractivity. Similar to classical delayed feedback control, the scheme is non-invasive, however, only in an appropriately relaxed sense considering the chaotic regime as a statistical equilibrium displaying random fluctuations as a finite size effect. We demonstrate the control scheme for so-called chimera states, which are coherence-incoherence p…
We show that oscillation death as a specific type of oscillation suppression, which implies symmetry breaking, can be controlled by introducing time-delayed coupling. In particular, we demonstrate that time delay influences the stability of an inhomogeneous steady state, providing the opportunity to modulate the threshold for oscillation death. Additionally, we find a novel type of oscillation death representing a secondary bifurcation of an inhomogeneous steady state.
This paper investigates the effects of vaccination on the dynamics of infectious disease, which is spreading in a population concurrently with awareness. The model considers contributions to the overall awareness from a global information campaign, direct contacts between unaware and aware individuals, and reported cases of infection. It is assumed that there is some time delay between individuals becoming aware and modifying their behaviour. Vaccination is administered to newborns, as well as to aware individuals, and it is further assumed that vaccine-induced immunity may wane with time. Fea…
