We study the morphology of the richest superclusters from the catalogues of superclusters of galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and compare the morphology of real superclusters with model superclusters in the Millennium Simulation. We use Minkowski functionals and shapefinders to quantify the morphology of superclusters: their sizes, shapes, and clumpiness. We generate empirical models of simple geometry to understand which morphologies correspond to the supercluster shapefinders. We show that rich superclusters have elongated, filamentary shapes with high-density clumps in their core regions. The clumpiness of superclusters is determined using the fourth Minkowski functional $V_3$. In the $K_1$-$K_2$ shapefinder plane the morphology of superclusters is described by a curve which is characteristic to multi-branching filaments. We also find that the differences between the fourth Minkowski functional $V_3$ for the bright and faint galaxies in observed superclusters are larger than in simulated superclusters.
We study the morphology of galaxy populations of the richest superclusters from the catalogue of superclusters of galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey using the luminosity density distribution and Minkowski functional V3. We compare the properties of grouped and isolated galaxies in regions of different density in superclusters. We find that in high-density cores of rich superclusters there is an excess of early type, passive galaxies, among galaxies in groups and clusters, as well as among those which do not belong to groups, while in lower density outer regions there are more blue, sta…
We present the results of a redshift survey of both cluster and intercluster galaxies in the central part of the Shapley Concentration, the richest supercluster of clusters in the nearby Universe, consisting of ~2000 radial velocities. We estimate the total overdensity in galaxies of the supercluster and its mass and we discuss the cosmological implications of these results. Moreover, using a Principal Components Analysis technique, we study the influence of the cluster and supercluster dynamics on the galaxy spectral morphology.
We report 2868 new multi-object spectroscopic measurements of galaxy redshifts in an area roughly 12°$\times$ 6°(right ascension $\times$ declination) centered on the Shapley Supercluster (SSC). These correspond to 2627 different galaxies. Including other measurements reported in the literature, the total number of galaxies with measured redshifts in a 19°$\times$ 16°area centered on the supercluster now reaches 5090. Of these, 2949 lie in the redshift range 9,000 - 18,000 km s$^{-1}$, which we tentatively identify with the SSC. This unprecedented sample allows a quite detailed qualitative mor…
We present a morphological study of the two richest superclusters from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (SCL126, the Sloan Great Wall, and SCL9, the Sculptor supercluster). We use Minkowski functionals, shapefinders, and galaxy group information to study the substructure of these superclusters as formed by different populations of galaxies. We compare the properties of grouped and isolated galaxies in the core region and in the outskirts of superclusters. The fourth Minkowski functional $V_3$ and the morphological signature $K_1$- $K_2$ show a crossover from low-density morphology (outskirts of …
We report here the first systematic study of the supercluster-void network in the LCDM concordance cosmology in which voids and superclusters are treated on an equal footing. Superclusters are defined as individual members of an over-dense excursion set and voids are defined as individual members of a complementary under-dense excursion set at the same density threshold. We determine the geometric, topological and morphological properties of the cosmic web at a large set of density levels by computing Minkowski functionals for every supercluster and void using SURFGEN. The properties of the la…
The Pisces-Cetus supercluster (redshift z~0.06) is one of the richest nearby (z<0.1) superclusters of galaxies, and emerges as a remarkable filament of galaxies at the edges of the two-degree-field galaxy redshift survey and the ongoing Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We explore the extent of the supercluster on the sky and in redshift space, and map the distribution of its constituent clusters and groups. We find evidence of enhanced star formation in galaxies belonging to groups in the supercluster compared to those in the field. This effect appears to be higher among the poorer groups than in the…
We study the supercluster shape properties of the recently compiled SDSS cluster catalog using an approach based on differential geometry. We detect superclusters by applying the percolation algorithm to observed cluster populations, extended out to $z_{\rm max}\leq 0.23$ in order to avoid selection biases. We utilize a set of shapefinders in order to study the morphological features of superclusters with $\geq 8$ cluster members and find that filamentary morphology is the dominant supercluster shape feature, in agreement with previous studies.
We measure the geometry, topology and morphology of the superclusters in mock SDSS catalogues prepared by Cole et al.(1998). The mock catalogues refer to $τ$CDM and $Ł$CDM {\em flat} cosmological models and are populated by galaxies so that these act as biased tracers of mass, conforming with the correlation function measured using APM catalogue. We compute the Minkowski Functionals (MFs) for the cosmic density fields using SURFGEN (Sheth et al.2003) and use the available 10 realizations of $τ$CDM to study the effect of cosmic variance in estimation of MFs and Shapefinders, which we find to be…
We analyse shapes of overdense regions (clusters and superclusters) in controlled N-body simulations of gravitational clustering with power law initial spectra P(k) \propto k^n, n = -3, -2, -1, 0. At values of the density just above the percolation transition the number of distinct (isolated) clusters peaks and we use this `natural threshold' to study the shapes and multiplicity function of clusters and superclusters. We find that the extent of both filamentarity and pancakeness increases as the simulation evolves, the former being appreciably larger than the latter at virtually all epochs and…
We present a morphological study of galaxies in the A901/902 supercluster from the COMBO-17 survey. A total of 570 galaxies with photometric redshifts in the range 0.155 < z_phot < 0.185 are visually classified by three independent classifiers to M_V=-18. These morphological classifications are compared to local galaxy density, distance from the nearest cluster centre, local surface mass density from weak lensing, and photometric classification. At high local galaxy densities, log(Sigma_10 /Mpc^2) > 1.5, a classical morphology-density relation is found. A correlation is also found between morp…
Modern redshift surveys such as the 2 degree field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) reveal the fully 3 dimensional distribution of a million or so galaxies over a large cosmological volume. Visually galaxies appear to be distributed along sheet-like and/or filamentary superclusters. The CfA Great Wall, Southern Great Wall and the recently discovered SDSS Great Wall are very spectacular superclusters. Clearly theoretical predictions for galaxy clustering must be tested against these rich datasets. This can be achieved by means of the Minkowski Functionals …
We present a new ansatz which can successfully be used to determine the morphological properties of the supercluster-void network. The ansatz is based on a surface modelling scheme SURFGEN, which generates a triangulated surface from a discrete data set representing (say) the distribution of galaxies in real (or redshift) space. Four Minkowski functionals -- surface area, volume, extrinsic curvature and genus -- describe the geometry and topology of the supercluster-void network. Ratio's of Minkowski functionals -- Shapefinders -- provide us with an excellent diagnostic of three dimensional sh…
We present results of our wide-field redshift survey of galaxies in a 285 square degree region of the Shapley Supercluster (SSC), based on a set of 10529 velocity measurements (including 1201 new ones) on 8632 galaxies obtained from various telescopes and from the literature. Our data reveal that the main plane of the SSC (v~ 14500 km/s) extends further than previous estimates, filling the whole extent of our survey region of 12~degrees by 30~degrees on the sky (30 x 75~h-1 Mpc). There is also a connecting structure associated with the slightly nearer Abell~3571 cluster complex (v~ 12000km/s. …
In dense clusters, higher densities at early epochs as well as physical processes, such as ram pressure stripping and tidal interactions become important, and can have direct consequences for the evolution of bars and their host disks. To study bars and disks as a function of environment, we are using the STAGES ACS HST survey of the Abell 901/902 supercluster (z~0.165), along with earlier field studies based the SDSS and the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey (OSUBSGS). We explore the limitations of traditional methods for characterizing the bar fraction, and in particular high…
We present a study of galaxies in the Abell 901/902 Supercluster at z~0.165, based on HST ACS F606W, COMBO-17, Spitzer 24um, XMM-Newton X-ray, and gravitational lensing maps, as part of the STAGES survey. We characterize galaxies with strong externally-triggered morphological distortions and normal relatively undisturbed galaxies, using visual classification and quantitative CAS parameters. We compare normal and distorted galaxies in terms of their frequency, distribution within the cluster, star formation properties, and relationship to dark matter (DM) or surface mass density, and intra-clus…
Wide-angle, moderately deep redshift surveys such as that conducted as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) allow study of the relationship between the structural elements of the large-scale distribution of galaxies -- including groups, cluster, superclusters, and voids -- and the dependence of galaxy formation and evolution on these enviroments. We present a progress report on mapping efforts with the SDSS and discuss recently constructed catalogs of clusters, voids, and void galaxies, and evidence for a 420Mpc/h supercluster or ``Great Wall.'' Analysis of multi-band photometry and mod…
We investigate correlations between galaxy age and environment in the Abell 901/2 supercluster for separate morphologies. Using COMBO-17 data, we define a sample of 530 galaxies, complete at $M_V -5\log h<-18$ on an area of $3.5\times 3.5$ (Mpc/$h$)$^2$. We explore several age indicators including an extinction-corrected residual from the colour-magnitude relation (CMR). As a result, we find a clear trend of age with density for galaxies of all morphologies that include a spheroidal component, in the sense that galaxies in denser environments are older. This trend is not seen among Scd/Irr gal…
This paper presents morphological type, membership, and U-V color for a sample of galaxies in the Coma cluster direction, complete down to M_B=-15.00 mag and extending down to M_B=-14.25 mag. We have examined 1155 objects from the GMP 1983 catalog on B and V images of the CFH12K camera, and obtained the Hubble type in most cases. Coma cluster membership for 473 galaxies was derived using morphology, apparent size, and surface brightness, and, afterward, redshift. The comparison among morphology- and redshift- memberships and among luminosity functions derived from this morphologically-selected…
We present here the results of a detailed study of the X-ray properties of the cluster of galaxies Abell 3128 (z=0.06), based on the analysis of deep (100 ks) XMM-Newton data. The most obvious feature of the X-ray morphology of A3128 is the presence of two X-ray peaks separated by ~12'. By detecting the redshifted Fe K line, we find that the Northeast (NE) X-ray peak observed toward A3128 is a distant luminous cluster of galaxies at redshift z=0.44. Our subsequent optical spectroscopic observation of a distant radio bright galaxy in the centre of the NE X-ray peak with the Magellan telescope a…
We apply Shapefinders, statistical measures of `shape' constructed from two dimensional partial Minkowski functionals, to study the degree of filamentarity in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). In two dimensions, three Minkowski functionals characterise the morphology of an object, they are: its perimeter (L), area (S), and genus. Out of L and S a single dimensionless Shapefinder Statistic, F can be constructed (0 <=F <=1). F acquires extreme values on a circle (F = 0) and a filament (F = 1). Using F, we quantify the extent of filamentarity in the LCRS by comparing our results with a Poi…
