We present results of the first-principles calculation of Cs dipole static polarizabilities for the Ns (N = 6 - 12), Np_j (N = 6 - 10), and Nd_j (N = 5 - 10) states using the relativistic all-order method. In our implementation of the all-order method, single and double excitations of Dirac-Fock wave functions are included to all orders in perturbation theory. Additional calculations are carried out for the dominant terms and the uncertainties of our final values are estimated for all states. A comprehensive review of the existing theoretical and experimental studies of the Cs polarizabilities is also carried out. Our results are compared with other values where they are available. These calculations provide a theoretical benchmark for a large number of Cs polarizabilities.
We report measurements of the $^{115}$In $7p_{1/2}$ and $7p_{3/2}$ scalar and tensor polarizabilities using two-step diode laser spectroscopy in an atomic beam. The scalar polarizabilities are one to two orders of magnitude larger than for lower lying indium states due to the close proximity of the $7p$ and $6d$ states. For the scalar polarizabilities, we find values (in atomic units) of $1.811(4) \times 10^5$ $a_0^3$ and $2.876(6) \times 10^5$ $a_0^3$ for the $7p_{1/2}$ and $7p_{3/2}$ states respectively. We estimate the smaller tensor polarizability component of the $7p_{3/2}$ state to be $-…
The static and dynamic electric multipolar polarizabilities and second hyperpolarizabilities of the H$_2^+$, D$_2^+$, and HD$^+$ molecular ions in the ground and first excited states are calculated nonrelativistically using explicitly correlated Hylleraas basis sets. The calculations are fully nonadiabatic; the Born-Oppenheimer approximation is not used. Comparisons are made with published theoretical and experimental results, where available. In our approach, no derivatives of energy functions nor derivatives of response functions are needed. In particular, we make contact with earlier calcul…
Derivations for the higher tensor components of the quadrupole polarizabilities are given and their values for the metastable states of the Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$ and Ba$^+$ alkaline earth-metal ions are estimated. We also give the scalar quadrupole polarizabilities of the ground and metastable states of these ions to compare our results with the previously available theoretical and experimental results. Reasonably good agreement between our calculations with the previous values of scalar quadrupole polarizabilities demonstrate their correctness. The reported scalar and tensor quadrupole polarizabilit…
Using recent high-precision measurements of electric dipole matrix elements of atomic cesium, we make an improved determination of the scalar ($α$) and vector ($β$) polarizabilities of the cesium $6s \ ^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow 7s \ ^2S_{1/2} $ transition calculated through a sum-over-states method. We report values of $α= -268.82 \ (30) \ a_0^3$ and $β= 27.139 \ (42) \ a_0^3$ with the highest precision to date. We find a discrepancy between our value of $β$ and the past preferred value, resulting in a significant shift in the value of the weak charge $Q_w$ of the cesium nucleus. Future work to re…
The progress in optical clock with uncertainty at a level of $10^{-18}$ requires unprecedented precision in estimating the contribution of multipolar and higher-order effects of atom-field interactions. Current theoretical and experimental results of dynamic multipolar polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities at the magic wavelength for the Sr clock differ substantially. We develop a combined approach of the Dirac-Fock plus core polarization (DFCP) and relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) methods to calculate dynamic multipolar polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities of the Sr ato…

It is found that the first primary tune-out wavelengths of the $ 5s_{1/2}, F=1, 2 $ states of $ ^{87}$Rb are 790.018187(193) nm and 790.032602(193) nm severally, where the calculated result for the $ 5s_{1/2}, F=2 $ state is in good agreement with the latest high-precision measurement 790.032388(32) nm [Phys. Rev. A 92, 052501 (2015)]. Similarl…

High precision multipole polarizabilities, $α_{\ell}$ for $\ell \le 4$ of the $1s$ ground state of the hydrogen isoelectronic series are obtained from the Dirac equation using the B-spline method with Notre Dame boundary conditions. Compact analytic expressions for the polarizabilities as a function of $Z$ with a relative accuracy of 10$^{-6}$ up to $Z = 100$ are determined by fitting to the calculated polarizabilities. The oscillator strengths satisfy the sum rules $\sum_i f^{(\ell)}_{0i} = 0$ for all multipoles from $\ell = 1$ to $\ell = 4$. The dispersion coefficients for the long-range H-H…
The dynamic dipole polarizabilities for the four lowest triplet states ($2\,^3S$, $3\,^3S$, $2\,^3P$ and $3\,^3P$) of helium are calculated using the B-spline configuration interaction method. Present values of the static dipole polarizabilities in the length, velocity and acceleration gauges are in good agreement with the best Hylleraas results. Also the tune-out wavelengths in the range from 400 nm to 4.2~$μ$m for the four lowest triplet states are identified, and the magic wavelengths in the range from 460~nm to 3.5~$μ$m for the $2\,^3S \to 3\,^3S$, $2\,^3S \to 2\,^3P$, and $2\,^3S \to 3\,^…
The Hylleraas-B-splines basis set is introduced in this paper, which can be used to obtain the eigenvalues and eigenstates of helium-like system's Hamiltonian. Comparing with traditional B-splines basis, the rate of convergence of our results has been significantly improved. Through combine this method and pseudo-states sum over scheme, we obtained the high precision values of static dipole porlarizabilities of the $1{}^1S-5{}^1S$, $2{}^3S-6{}^3S$ states of helium in length and velocity gauges respectively, and the results get good agreements. The final extrapolate results of porlarizabilities…

The scalar and tensor components of the electric quadrupole (E2) polarizabilities of the first two excited states of all the alkali-metal atoms are determined. To validate the calculations, we have evaluated the ground state E2 polarizabilities of these atoms and compared them with the literature values. We could not find the ground state E2 polarizability value for Fr in the literature to compare with our result. The dominant parts of these quantities are estimated by combining the precisely calculated E2 transition matrix elements of many low-lying transitions with the experimental energies,…
Two different theoretical methods have been used to complete a new calculation of polarizability in the thallium 6p_{1/2}, 7s, and 7p_{1/2} states. The predictions of the two methods agree to within 1% for the 6p_{1/2} and 7s states and 2% for 7p_{1/2} state. We find that the theoretical expression for the 6p_{1/2} - 7s transition polarizability difference is dominated (greater than 90% contribution) by mixing of the 7s state with the 7p_{1/2} and 7p_{3/2} states. By comparing the theoretical expression to an existing Stark shift measurement [Doret et al., Phys. Rev. A 66, 052504 (2002)], new,…

Experimental and theoretical study of dynamic polarizabilities in the $5S_{1/2}$-$5D_{5/2}$ clock transition in rubidium-87 and determination of E1 matrix elements
High resolution studies of the fine structure pattern in high-L n=37 levels of Th3+ have been carried out using radio-frequency (rf) spectroscopy detected with Resonant Excitation Stark Ionization Spectroscopy (RESIS). Intervals separating L=9 to L=15 levels have been measured, and the results analyzed with the long-range effective potential model. The dipole polarizability of Th4+is determined to be aD= 7.720(7) a.u.. The quadrupole polarizability is found to be 21.5(3.9) a.u. Both measurements represent significant tests of a-priori theoretical descriptions of this highly relativistic ion.
We discuss possible search for optical transitions in Sm13+ and Sm14+ using ab initio calculations of differential dynamic polarizability. We calculate dynamic polarizability for M1 transition between first and second excited states of Sm14+ . Transition amplitudes and energies within optical range for states that contribute to the polarizability of the mentioned transition are presented. Employing simple analytical formula for polarizability data in the vicinity of a resonance and assuming that several values of the polarizability for different laser frequencies will be measured one can find …

The polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities of the Be$^+$ ion in the $2^2S$ state and the $2^2P$ state are determined. Calculations are performed using two independent methods: i) variationally determined wave functions using Hylleraas basis set expansions and ii) single electron calculations utilizing a frozen-core Hamiltonian. The first few parameters in the long-range interaction potential between a Be$^+$ ion and a H, He, or Li atom, and the leading parameters of the effective potential for the high-$L$ Rydberg states of beryllium were also computed. All the values reported are the resu…
We employ the closed-shell perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) theory developed by us earlier [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 77}, 062516 (2008)] to evaluate the ground state static electric dipole polarizabilities (αs) of several atomic systems. In this work, we have incorporated a class of higher order many-body effects in our calculations that had not been taken into account in the above paper. We highlight their importance in improving the accuracy of $α$. We also calculate the ground state αs of the inert gas atoms and several iso-electronic singly and doubly charged ions in order to make a c…
The present work determines the precise values of magic wavelengths corresponding to the clock transitions 5$^2S$-4$^2D$ of Y$^{2+}$ ion both at the levels of fine- and hyperfine-structures due to the external light beams having linear as well as circular polarization. To calculate the dynamic polarizabilities of the associated states of the transitions, we employ the sum-over-states technique, where the dominating and correlation sensitive part of the sum is evaluated using a highly correlated relativistic coupled-cluster theory. The estimated magic wavelengths of the light beams have substan…

We present magic wavelengths for the $nS$ - $nP_{1/2,3/2}$ and $nS$ - $mD_{3/2,5/2}$ transitions, with the respective ground and first excited $D$ states principal quantum numbers $n$ and $m$, in the Mg$^+$, Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$ and Ba$^+$ alkaline earth ions for linearly polarized lights by plotting dynamic polarizatbilities of the $nS$, $nP_{1/2,3/2}$ and $mD_{3/2,5/2}$ states of the ions. These dynamic polarizabilities are evaluated by employing a relativistic all-order perturbative method and their accuracies are ratified by comparing their static values with the available high precision experim…
We report the implementation of a general-order relativistic coupled-cluster method for performing high-precision calculations of atomic and molecular properties. As a first application, the static dipole polarizabilities of the ground and first excited states of Al+ have been determined to precisely estimate the uncertainty associated with the BBR shift of its clock frequency measurement. The obtained relative BBR shift is -3.66+-0.44 for the 3s^2 ^1S_0^0 --> 3s3p ^3P_0^0 transition in Al+ in contrast to the value obtained in the latest clock frequency measurement, -9+-3 [Phys. Rev. Using a long-range polarization potential for HeH$^{+}$, we can obtain an empirical value for the Boltzmann constant $k_{B}$ with an order of magnitude greater precision than the previous best experimental value based on the dipole polarizability of $^{4}$He. We find that relativistic and QED effects of order $α_{\rm FS}^{3}$ in the fine structure constant are crucial in the quadrupole polarizability in order to fit the dipole polarizbility with this precision using the polarization potential. By calculating finite-mass corrections for $^{3}$He, we also present theoretical values for the dipol…
Atom interferometry is amongst the most advanced technologies that provides very high-precision measurements. There can exist a number of obscure forces that can interfere with the atoms used in this instrument. In the present work, we are probing possible roles of one such important forces, known as ``blackbody friction force (BBFF)'', that may affect the precisions in the measurements made using atom interferometers based on the Rb and Cs atoms. The BBFF can be generated on atoms due to the black-body radiations emitted by the stray electromagnetic fields present in the experimental set-up a…

Using first-principles calculations, we identify "magic-zero" optical wavelengths, λ_zero, for which the ground-state frequency-dependent polarizabilities of alkali-metal atoms vanish. Our approach uses high-precision, relativistic all-order methods in which all single, double, and partial triple excitations of the Dirac-Fock wave functions are included to all orders of perturbation theory. We discuss the use of magic-zero wavelengths for sympathetic cooling in two-species mixtures of alkalis with group-II and other elements of interest. Special cases in which these wavelengths coincide with s…
We use effective field theory to compute the influence of nuclear structure on precision calculations of atomic energy levels. As usual, the EFT's effective couplings correspond to the various nuclear properties (such as the charge radius, nuclear polarizabilities, Friar and Zemach moments {\it etc.}) that dominate its low-energy electromagnetic influence on its surroundings. By extending to spinning nuclei the arguments developed for spinless ones in {\tt arXiv:1708.09768}, we use the EFT to show -- to any fixed order in $Zα$ (where $Z$ is the atomic number and $α$ the fine-structure constant…
In the recent work [A.~Yamaguchi et. al, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 123}, 113201 (2019)] Cd has been identified as an excellent candidate for a lattice clock. Here, we carried out computations needed for further clock development and made an assessment of the higher-order corrections to the light shift of the $5s^2\, ^1\!S_0$--$5s5p\, ^3\!P_0^o$ clock transition. We carried out calculations of the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole polarizabilities and linear and circular hyperpolarizabilities of the $5s^2\, ^1\!S_0$ and $5s5p\, ^3\!P_0^o$ clock states at the magic wavelength and estimated unc…
The electric dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of the $5s5p~^3\!P_1^o$ state and the $C_6$ and $C_8$ coefficients for the $^1\!S_0 +\, ^1\!S_0$ and $^1\!S_0 +\, ^3\!P_1^o$ dimers of strontium are calculated using a high-precision relativistic approach that combines configuration interaction and linearized coupled-cluster methods. Our recommended values of the long range dispersion coefficients for the $0_u$ and $1_u$ energy levels are $C_6(0_u)=3771(32)$ a.u. and $C_6(1_u)= 4001(33)$ a.u., respectively. They are in good agreement with recent results from experimental photoassociation data…
