We present Chandra X-ray results for the jet, nucleus, and gaseous atmosphere of NGC 315, a nearby radio galaxy whose jet kinematics are known through deep radio mapping. Diffuse X-ray synchrotron emission is detected from the jet out to 30 arcsec from the nucleus, through regions both of fast bulk flow and deceleration. The X-ray to radio flux ratio drops considerably where the flow decelerates, but the X-ray and radio emissions show similar transverse extents throughout, requiring distributed particle acceleration to maintain the supply of X-ray-emitting electrons. A remarkable knotty filament within the jet is seen in both the radio and X-ray, contributing roughly 10 per cent of the diffuse emission along its extent at both wavelengths. No completely satisfactory explanation for the filament is found, though its oscillatory appearance, roughly aligned magnetic field, and requirements for particle acceleration, suggest that it is a magnetic strand within a shear layer between fast inner and slower outer flow.
We present Chandra ACIS-S observations of the enigmatic Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC4698. This object together with several other bona-fide Seyfert-2 galaxies show no absorption in the low spatial resolution ASCA data, in contrast to the standard unification models. Our Chandra observations of NGC4698 probe directly the nucleus allowing us to check whether nearby sources contaminate the ASCA spectrum. Indeed, the Chandra observations show that the ASCA spectrum is dominated by two nearby AGN. The X-ray flux of NGC4698 is dominated by a nuclear source with luminosity L(0.3-8 keV) ~ 10^39, erg s-1 coinc…
Elliptical galaxy nuclei are the sites of the largest black holes known, but typically show little or no nuclear activity. We investigate this extreme quiescence using Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 1399, NGC 4472, and NGC 4636. The unique Chandra imaging power enables us to place upper limits of 7.3, 15 and 28 X 10^-9 the Eddington luminosity for the 0.1-1 billion solar mass black holes in NGC 1399, NGC 4472, and NGC 4636, respectively. The corresponding radiative efficiencies in this band are 4.1, 24, and 620 X 10^-6 using Bondi accretion rates de…
We have observed the nearby spiral galaxy NGC6503 using Chandra. Seven discrete sources associated with the galaxy have been found, one of them coincident with its Liner-starburst nucleus. One of the sources corresponds to a ULX with Lx >~ 10e39 ergs/s. Previous ROSAT observations of the galaxy show that this source has varied by at least a factor 3 in the last 6 years. No evidence is found for strong diffuse emission in the nuclear region or the presence of a low luminosity AGN.
The luminous, oxygen-rich supernova remnant, J1228+441, is located in the irregular galaxy NGC 4449 and has been observed at radio wavelengths for thirty years. An analysis of recent VLA observations of NGC 4449, combined with VLA archive data and previously published VLA and WSRT observations, yields light curves at 6 and 20 cm from 1972 to 2002. The light curves at all radio frequencies exhibit a marked decline in radio emission, confirming past findings. This paper presents and discusses the radio light curves and spectral index, alpha, variations from 1972 to 2002 where nu propto nu^(-alph…
(Abridged) We present deep, Chandra spectral imaging of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1569. The unprecedented spatial resolution allows us to spatially identify the components of the integrated \x spectrum. Fitted spectral models require an intrinsic absorption component and higher metal abundances than previous studies indicated. Our results provide the first direct evidence for metal-enriched winds from dwarf starburst galaxies.
We report the results of a deep Chandra ACIS pointing at the merging system NGC 4038/39. We detect an extraordinarily luminous population of X-ray sources, with luminosity well above that of XRBs in M31 and the Milky Way. If these sources are unbeamed XRBs, our observations may point to them being 10-100Mo black hole counterparts. We detect an X-ray bright hot ISM, with features including bright superbubbles associated with the actively star-forming knots, regions where hot and warm (H$α$) ISM intermingle, and a large-scale outflow.
We present analysis of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of three early-type galaxies, NGC 57, NGC 7796 and IC 1531. All three are found in very low density environments, and appear to have no neighbours of comparable size. NGC 57 has a halo of kT~0.9 keV, solar metallicity gas, while NGC 7796 and IC 1531 both have ~0.55 keV, 0.5-0.6 Zsol haloes. IC 1531 has a relatively compact halo, and we consider it likely that gas has been removed from the system by the effects of AGN heating. For NGC 57 and NGC 7796 we estimate mass, entropy and cooling time profiles and find that NGC 57 has a fairly m…
We report on the 0.1--100 keV BeppoSAX observations of two nearby LINER galaxies, Sombrero and NGC 4736. Chandra ACIS-S observations supplement this broad-beam spectral study with a high resolution look into the nuclear region, and show a dominating central point source in Sombrero and a complex X-ray binary dominated/starburst region in NGC 4736. A compact non-thermal radio source, present in the nucleus of both galaxies, coincides with the central source in Sombrero, while in NGC 4736 its X-ray counterpart is a much fainter point source, not the brightest of the central region. On the basis …
By studying the optical brightness surface density of the globular cluster NGC 6388, it has been recently proposed that it harbors a central intermediate-mass black hole with mass $\simeq 5.7\times 10^3$ M$_{\odot}$. We expect that the compact object in the center of NGC 6388 emits radiation in the $X$-ray band as a consequence of the accretion from the surrounding matter. We searched for $XMM$-Newton and $Chandra$ observations towards NGC 6388 to test this hypothesis. The $Chandra$ satellite disentangles several point-like $X$-ray sources, probably low mass $X$-ray binaries, well within the c…
Chandra images show symmetric, 8 kpc long, arm-like features in the X-ray halo surrounding NGC 4636. The leading edges of these features are sharp and are accompanied by temperature increases of ~30%. These properties, along with their scale and symmetry, suggest that the arm-like structures are produced by nuclear outburst driven shocks. We interpret these observations as part of a cycle in which cooling gas originally fueled a nuclear outburst about 3 X 10^{6} years ago leading to shocks that reheat the cooling gas, thus preventing the accumulation of significant amounts of cooled gas in the…
We have detected diffuse soft X-ray emission (0.4-1 keV) from the disk of the spiral galaxy NGC 2403 with Chandra. This diffuse emission (with a total luminosity of 2.1 x 10^38 erg/s and a gas temperature of 2-8 x 10^6 K) is well separated from the numerous bright point sources. NGC 2403 is a luminous spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation. Recent HI observations have revealed an extended HI halo with anomalous velocities and a general inflow towards the central regions of the galaxy. This result and the present detection of a diffuse, hot X-ray emitting gas point at a very active di…
We present the results of a study of discrete X-ray sources in NGC 6946 using a deep Chandra ACIS observation. Based on the slope of the log N-log S distribution and the general correlation of sources with the spiral arms, we infer that the overall discrete source sample in NGC 6946 is dominated by high mass X-ray binaries, in contrast to the source distributions in M31 and the Milky Way. This is consistent with the higher star formation rate in NGC 6946 than in those galaxies. We find that the strong X-ray sources in the region of the galactic center do not correlate in detail with images of …
We report the discovery of X-ray emission from NGC 7027, a prototypical object for the study of the formation and evolution of planetary nebulae (PNs). Observations with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory show that the X-ray emission from NGC 7027 is extended and is bipolar in morphology. The ACIS spectrum displays strong emission from highly ionized Ne and weaker emission features which we attribute to O, Mg, and Si. Model fits to this spectrum suggest a characteristic temperature T_x ~ 3x10^6 K and an intrinsic (unabsorbed) X-ray luminosity of L…
We report the detection of 21-cm line emission from H I in the planetary nebula NGC 7293 (the Helix). The observations, made with the Very Large Array, show the presence of a ring of atomic hydrogen that is associated with the outer portion of the ionized nebula. This ring is most probably gas ejected in the AGB phase that has been subsequently photodissociated by radiation from the central star. The H I emission spreads over about 50 km/s in radial velocity. The mass in H I is approximately 0.07 solar masses, about three times larger than the mass in molecular hydrogen and comparable with the…
The excellent quality of the Chandra observation of NGC 5846 reveals a complex X-ray morphology of the central regions of this galaxy. An intriguing morphological similarity between the X-ray and the optical line emission, discovered before using ROSAT HRI images (Trinchieri, Noris & Di Serego Alighieri 1997), is confirmed here in unprecedented detail. Complex spectral characteristics are associated with the morphological peculiarities, indicating a possibly turbulent gas in this object. A population of ~ 40 individual sources is also observed, with Lx in the range ~ 3 x 10**{38}- 2 x 10**{39}…
We present results from new Chandra and archival HST and VLA imaging observations of the circumnuclear extended emission in the nearby Type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 2110. We find resolved soft-band X-ray emission 4'' (~160 pc) north of the nucleus, which is spatially coincident with [OIII] emission, but lies just beyond the northern edge of the radio jet in the source. We find that shock-heating of multi-phase gas clouds can successfully account for this extended emission, although we cannot rule out alternative models, such as the scattering of nuclear radiation by ionized material, or pure photo…
We present new results from a Chandra HETG observation of NGC 5548 and give a comparison of absorption and emission features found in other Seyfert 1 galaxies using Chandra grating observations. Deep soft X-ray edges are seen in Mkn 509 and NGC 3783, consistent with ASCA data. In NGC 5548 and NGC 4501 the edges are weak but consistent with the low column densities. We show that the detection of a narrow, probably non-disk, component of the iron line is very common. However, just as importantly, it is not detected in some cases. We show the effect of removing this narrow component from the ASCA…
We present results of a Chandra observation of a field in NGC 2264. The observations were taken with the ACIS-I camera with an exposure time of 48.1 ks. We present a catalog of 263 sources, which includes X-ray luminosity, optical and infrared photometry and X-ray variability information. We found 41 variable sources, 14 of which have a flare-like light curve, and 2 of which have a pattern of a steady increase or decrease over a 10 hour period. The optical and infrared photometry for the stars identified as X-ray sources are consistent with most of these objects being pre-main sequence stars w…
We report on the Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the globular cluster NGC 288. We detect four X-ray sources within the core radius and seven additional sources within the half-mass radius down to a limiting luminosity of Lx=7e30 erg/s (assuming cluster membership) in the 0.3-7 keV band. We also observed the cluster with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and identify optical counterparts to seven X-ray sources out of the nine sources within the HST field-of-view. Based on the X-ray and optical properties, we find 2-5 candidates of cataclysmic variables (CVs) or ch…
Chandra observations of the core of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 reveal a heavily absorbed source of hard X-rays embedded within the nuclear starburst region. The source has an unabsorbed, 2 to 10 keV luminosity of >=10^39 erg/s and photoionizes the surrounding gas. We observe this source through a dusty torus with a neutral absorbing column density of NH ~ 2x10^23 cm^-2. The torus is hundreds of pc across and collimates the starburst-driven nuclear outflow. We suggest that the ionizing source is an intermediate-mass black hole or a weakly accreting supermassive black hole, which may si…
We present the first high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 4151. Observations with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer reveal a spectrum dominated by narrow emission lines from a spatially resolved (1.6 kpc), highly ionized nebula. The X-ray narrow-line region is composite, consisting of both photoionized and collisionally ionized components. The X-ray emission lines have similar velocities, widths, and spatial extent to the optical emission lines, showing that they arise in the same region. The clouds in the narrow-line region must contain a large …
The 6 cm formaldehyde (H2CO) maser sources in the compact HII regions NGC 7538-IRS1 and G29.96-0.02 have been imaged at high resolution (beams < 50 mas). Using the VLBA and MERLIN, we find the angular sizes of the NGC 7538 masers to be ~10 mas (30 AU) corresponding to brightness temperatures ~10^8 K. The angular sizes of the G29.96-0.02 masers are ~20 mas (130 AU) corresponding to brightness temperatures ~10^7 K. Using the VLA, we detect 2 cm formaldehyde absorption from the maser regions. We detect no emission in the 2 cm line, indicating the lack of a 2 cm maser and placing limits on the 6 c…
We present high resolution X-ray imaging data from the ACIS-S instrument on the Chandra telescope of the nearby interacting galaxy group NGC 4410. Four galaxies in the inner portion of this group are clearly detected by Chandra, including the peculiar low luminosity radio galaxy NGC 4410A. In addition to a nuclear point source, NGC 4410A contains diffuse X-ray emission, including an X-ray ridge extending out to about 12" (6 kpc) to the northwest of the nucleus. This ridge is coincident with an arc of optical emission-line gas, which has previously been shown to have optical line ratios consist…
We have observed the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (E-CDF-S) using a mosaic of six deep Very Large Array (VLA) pointings at 1.4GHz. In this paper, we present the survey strategy, description of the observations, and the first data release. The observations were performed during June through September of 2007 and included from 15 to 17 ``classic'' VLA antennas and 6 to 11 that had been retrofitted for the Expanded VLA (EVLA). The first data release consists of a 34.1' x 34.1' image and the attendant source catalog. The image achieves an rms sensitivity of 6.4 uJy per 2.8" x 1.6" beam in its…
We use a 54.4 ks Chandra observation to study nuclear outflow activity in NGC4552 (M89), an elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. Chandra images in the 0.5-2 keV band show two ring-like features ~1.7 kpc in diameter in the core of NGC4552, as reported previously by Filho et al. We use spherically symmetric point explosion shock models to argue that the shape of the surface brightness profile across the rims of the rings and the temperature of hot gas in the rings are consistent with a Mach 1.7 shock carrying mean mechanical power L_shock ~ 3 x 10^{41} ergs/s produced by a ~1.4 x 10^{55} ergs…
VLA observations of OH absorption towards the elliptical galaxy NGC 1052 are presented. Both OH lines, at 1665 and 1667 MHz, were detected in absorption towards the center of NGC 1052. The hyperfine ratio of the two OH lines ($τ$$_{1667}$/$τ$$_{1665}$) is 2.6$\pm$0.8 as compared to 1.8 expected for the excitation under LTE conditions for an optically thin cloud. The column density of OH is estimated to be $2.73(\pm0.26)\times10^{14} cm^{-2}$ assuming $T_{ex} \sim$10 K. The centers of both the OH lines are redshifted from the systemic velocity of the galaxy by $\sim$173 km s$^{-1}$. The velocit…
We present analysis of a Chandra observation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 4555. The galaxy lies in a very low density environment, either isolated from all galaxies of similar mass or on the outskirts of a group. Despite this, NGC 4555 has a large gaseous halo, extending to ~60 kpc. We find the mean gas temperature to be ~0.95 keV and the Iron abundance to be ~0.5 solar. We model the surface brightness, temperature and abundance distribution of the halo and use these results to estimate parameters such as the entropy and cooling time of the gas, and the total gravitational mass of the galaxy. …
We present a Chandra X-ray observation that shows, unambiguously for the first time, the presence of a giant diffuse X-ray-emitting corona around the edge-on disk galaxy NGC 4631. This corona, with a characteristic thermal temperature of 2-7\times10^6 K, extends as far as 8 kpc away from the galactic plane. The X-ray morphology resembles the radio halo of the galaxy, indicating a close connection between outflows of hot gas, cosmic rays, and magnetic field from the galactic disk. Enhanced diffuse X-ray emission is apparently enclosed by numerous Hα-emitting loops blistered out from the central…
Ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are outstanding due to their huge luminosity output in the infrared, which is predominantly powered by super starbursts and/or hidden active galactic nuclei (AGN). NGC 6240 is one of the nearest ULIRGs and is considered a key representative of its class. Here, we report the first high-resolution imaging spectroscopy of NGC 6240 in X-rays. The observation, performed with the ACIS-S detector aboard the Chandra X-ray observatory, led to the discovery of two hard nuclei, coincident with the optical-IR nuclei of NGC 6240. The AGN character of both nuclei is …
We present results of a sensitive 76 ksec Chandra observation of the young stellar cluster in NGC 2024 (d = 415 pc) in the Orion B giant molecular cloud. Previous infrared observations have shown that this remarkable cluster contains several hundred embedded young stars, most of which are still surrounded by circumstellar disks. Thus, it presents a rare opportunity to study X-ray activity in a large sample of optically invisible protostars and classical T Tauri stars (cTTS) undergoing accretion. Chandra detected 283 X-ray sources of which 248 were identified with counterparts at other waveleng…
We present high spatial resolution X-ray Chandra HRC and HST WFPC2 Halpha observations of the prototypical infrared luminous galaxy NGC6240. The central region of this system shows a remarkably complex morphology, with filaments and loops observed in the optical and X-rays. The total X-ray luminosity is dominated by the extended emission. Both nuclei are clearly detected in the HRC image and both appear to be extended. The energetics of the nuclei imply that the southern nucleus is the more plausible counterpart to the obscured AGN. The overall SED of the galaxy is in good agreement with a ble…
Chandra observations of low-luminosity supermassive black holes in nearby elliptical galaxies provide tight limits on both their nuclear luminosities and on their Bondi accretion rates. We examine Chandra constraints on NGC 6166, the dominant galaxy in the cluster Abell 2199, which hosts a \sim 10^9 \Msun black hole. We measure a nuclear X-ray luminosity L_{x} \sim 10^{40} erg/s and show that the density and temperature profiles of the hot interstellar medium imply a Bondi accretion rate of Mdot_{Bondi} \sim 3 10^{-2} Msun/yr. This accretion rate predicts a nuclear luminosity of \sim 10^{44} e…
Using new Chandra X-ray observations and existing XMM-Newton X-ray and Hubble far ultraviolet observations, we aim to detect and identify the faint X-ray sources belonging to the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808 in order to understand their role in the evolution of globular clusters. We present a Chandra X-ray observation of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2808. We classify the X-ray sources associated with the cluster by analysing their colours and variability. Previous observations with XMM-Newton and far ultraviolet observations with the Hubble Space Telescope are re-investigated to hel…
(Abridged) We used the Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS S3 to image the X-ray faint elliptical galaxy NGC 4365 and lenticular galaxy NGC 4382. The observations resolve much of the X-ray emission into 99 and 58 sources, respectively, most of which are low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) associated with each of the galaxies. We identify 18 out of the 37 X-ray sources in a central field in NGC 4365 with globular clusters. The luminosity functions of the resolved sources for both galaxies are best fit with cutoff power-laws whose cutoff luminosity is $\approx 0.9 - 3.1 \times 10^{39}$ ergs s$^{-1}$. The…
We present observations in the H53alpha line and radio continuum at 43 GHz carried out with the VLA in the D array (2'' angular resolution) toward the starburst galaxy NGC 5253. VLA archival data have been reprocessed to produce a uniform set of 2, 1.3 and 0.7 cm high angular (0.''2 X 0.''1) radio continuum images. The RRL H53alpha, a previously reported measurement of the H92alpha RRL flux density and the reprocessed high angular resolution radio continuum flux densities have been modeled using a collection of HII regions. Based on the models, the ionized gas in the nuclear source has an elec…
We present the optical and infrared identifications of the 266 radio sources detected at 20 cm with the Very Large Array in the Chandra Deep Field South (Kellermann et al. 2008). Using deep i-band Advanced Camera for Surveys, R-band Wide Field Imager, K-band SOFI/NTT, K-band ISAAC/VLT and Spitzer imaging data, we are able to find reliable counterparts for 254 (~95%) VLA sources. Twelve radio sources remain unidentified and three of them are ``empty fields''. Using literature and our own data we are able to assign redshifts to 186 (~70%) radio sources: 108 are spectroscopic redshifts and 78 rel…
We report the serendipitous detection of the planetary nebula NGC 5315 by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The Chandra imaging spectroscopy results indicate that the X-rays from this PN, which harbors a Wolf-Rayet (WR) central star, emanate from a T_X ~ 2.5x10^6 K plasma generated via the same wind-wind collisions that have cleared a compact (~8000 AU radius) central cavity within the nebula. The inferred X-ray luminosity of NGC 5315 is ~2.5x10^{32} erg s^{-1} (0.3-2.0 keV), placing this object among the most luminous such ``hot bubble'' X-ray sources yet detected within PNe. With the X-ray dete…
An analysis of a 29 ksec Chandra ACIS-S observation of the young, Cassiopeia-A like supernova remnant in the irregular galaxy NGC 4449 is presented. The observed 0.5-2.1 keV spectrum reveals the likely presence of several emission lines including O VIII at 0.65 keV and 0.77 keV, Ne X at 1.05 keV, Mg XI at 1.5 keV, and Si XIII at 1.85 keV. From the observed spectrum, we derive an N_H = 10^21 cm^-2 and an X-ray temperature of T = 9 * 10^6 K. A non-equilibrium ionization fit to the spectrum suggests an overabundance of oxygen around 20 times solar, consistent with the remnant's UV and optical emi…
As part of our campaign to determine the nature of the various source populations of the low-luminosity globular cluster X-ray sources, we have obtained a Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS-S3 image of the globular cluster NGC 6440. We detect 24 sources to a limiting luminosity of ~2 times 10^31 erg/s (0.5-2.5keV) inside the cluster's half-mass radius, all of which lie within ~2 core radii of the cluster center. We also find excess emission in and around the core which could be due to unresolved point sources. Based upon X-ray luminosities and colors, we conclude that there are 4-5 likely quiescen…
In this paper, we analyze spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 obtained with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS), the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) and the European Photon Imaging Camera's (EPIC) onboard of XMM-Newton. The two observations were separated by ~7 months. In the LETGS spectrum we detect a highly ionized warm absorber corresponding to an ionization state of 400x10^{-9} W m, visible as a depression at 10-18 Å. This depression is formed by multiple weak Fe and Ne lines. A much smaller column density was found for the lowly ionized warm absorbe…
The relatively nearby (distance=24.1 Mpc) elliptical galaxy NGC821 hosts an extreme example of a quiescent central massive black hole, for which deep Chandra observations revealed a nuclear source for the first time (with L(2-10 keV)/L_Edd ~ 3.6X10^{-8}). We present here a multiwavelength study of this nucleus, including VLA observations that detect a radio counterpart to the Chandra nuclear source at 1.4 GHz, with a flux density of 127 $μ$m and possibly a flat spectral shape; we also consider new Spitzer IRAC observations and archival HST images. With these data we discuss possible scenarios …
We determine the total enclosed mass profile from 0.7 to 35 kpc in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4636 based on the hot interstellar medium temperature profile measured using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and other X-ray and optical data. The total mass increases as radius to the power 1.2 to a good approximation over this range in radii, attaining a total mass-to-light ratio of 40 solar masses per solar visual luminosity at 35 kpc. We find that at least half, and as much as 80%, of the mass within the optical half-light radius is non-luminous, implying an exceptionally low baryon fraction in NGC …
A 96-ks Chandra X-ray observation of rho Ophiuchus cloud core A detected 87 sources, of which 60 were identified with counterparts at other wavelengths. The X-ray detections include 12 of 14 known classical T Tauri stars in the field, 15 of 17 known weak-lined TTS, and 4 of 15 brown dwarf candidates. The X-ray detections are characterized by hard, heavily absorbed emission. The mean photon energy of a typical source is 3 keV, and more than half of the detections are variable. Prominent X-ray flares were detected in the unusual close binary system Oph S1, the X-ray bright WTTS DoAr 21, and the …
(Abridged) We observed the X-ray bright E3 galaxy NGC 1600 and nearby group members with the Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS S3. Unresolved emission dominates the observation; however, we resolved some emission into 71 sources, most of which are low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) associated with NGC 1600. Twenty-one sources have L_X>2E39 ergs/s (0.3-10.0 keV; assuming they are at the distance of NGC 1600) marking them as ultraluminous X-ray point source (ULX) candidates; we expect only 11+/-2 are unrelated sources. NGC 1600 may have the largest number of ULX candidates in an early-type galaxy to d…
We report sub arc-second resolution X-ray imaging-spectroscopy of the archetypal type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The observations reveal the detailed structure and spectra of the 13 kpc-extent nebulosity previously imaged at lower resolution with ROSAT. The Chandra image shows a bright, compact source coincident with the brightest radio and optical emission; this source is extended by \simeq 1.5 arcsec (165 pc) in the same direction as the nuclear optical line and radio continuum emission. Bright X-ray emission extends \simeq 5 arcsec (550 pc) to the NE and c…
We report the detailed analysis of the X-ray properties of the discrete sources detected in a long (72 ks) \chandra ACIS-S observation of the Antennae galaxies. We detect 49 sources, down to a detection limit of ~ 10^{38} erg\s; 18 sources have Lx >10^{39} erg\s (Ultra Luminous X-ray sources; ULXs). Six of the 49 sources have an extended component. Two sources show evidence for variability during this observation, and three sources exhibit long term variability in timescales of a few years. The spectra of the discrete sources are diverse, suggesting different emission mechanisms, broadly corre…
Spectral studies of a luminous X-ray source, NGC 253 X21, are presented based on archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data. The Chandra observation on 1999 December 16 detected the source at a bolometric luminosity of 0.3 x 10^39 erg/s (assuming isotropic emission), while an XMM-Newton observation on 2000 June 3 revealed a short-term source variation in the range of (0.6--1.3) x 10^39 erg/s. All spectra from these observations were successfully modeled by emission from an optically thick accretion disk. The average inner disk radius was kept constant at 63 x (cos 60/cos i)^(1/2) km, where i is the …
We present a 60 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the isolated edge-on spiral NGC 3556, together with a multiwavelength analysis of various discrete X-ray sources and diffuse X-ray features. Among 33 discrete X-ray sources detected within the I_B = 25 mag per square arcsec isophote ellipse of the galaxy, we identify a candidate for the galactic nucleus, an ultraluminous X-ray source that might be an accreting intermediate-mass black hole, a possible X-ray binary with a radio counterpart, and two radio-bright giant HII regions. We detect large amounts of extraplanar diffuse X-ray emission, which…
We present a high-resolution 5-GHz radio continuum map of the starburst galaxy NGC 2146 made with MERLIN and the VLA, in a search of radio supernovae and supernova remnants expected to be already produced by the most massive stars in the starburst. At 5 GHz, about 20 point sources were detected earlier by Glendenning & Kronberg (1986) in the central 800 pc of NGC 2146. Our observations with higher sensitivity and resolution made with MERLIN and the VLA confirms the detection of 18 sources, and resolves 7 of them. Additional 1.6-GHz MERLIN observations disclose 9 sources coincident in position …
Multi-epoch Chandra X-ray observations of nearby massive early-type galaxies open up the study of an important regime of low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) behavior -- long term variability. In a companion paper, we report on the detection of 158 X-ray sources down to a detection/completeness limit of 0.6/1.4 x 10^{37} ergs/s using five Chandra observations of NGC 4697, one of the nearest (11.3 Mpc), optically luminous (M_B < -20), elliptical (E6) galaxy. In this paper, we report on the variability of LMXB candidates measured on timescales from seconds to years. At timescales of seconds to hours, we…
Chu et al (2001; ApJ, 533, L69) report that they find the diffuse X-ray emission from the Cat's Eye Nebula, NGC 6543, to be inconsistent with nebular abundances but consistent with abundances expected for the stellar wind although the location of the emission and the temperature they derive for the X-ray emitting region of NGC 6543 require that a significant fraction of the X-ray emitting material be nebular. A recent, refined, determination by Bernard-Salus et al (personal communication) of nebular abundances in NGC 6543 incorporating infrared, optical, and ultraviolet observations provides a…
We present for the first time a high-resolution X-ray spectrum of a Seyfert galaxy. The Chandra-LETGS spectrum of NGC 5548 shows strong, narrow absorption lines from highly ionised species (the H-like and He-like ions of C, N, O, Ne, Na, Mg, Si, as well as Fe XIV--XXI). The lines are blueshifted by a few hundred km/s. The corresponding continuum absorption edges are weak or absent. The absorbing medium can be modelled by an outflowing, thin and warm shell in photoionization equilibrium. The absorption lines are similar to lower ionization absorption lines observed in the UV, although these UV …
With a Chandra ACIS-S3 observation, we detect 42 X-ray point sources in the elliptical galaxy NGC 720, including a possible central source. Most of these sources will be low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), and 12 are located within 2" of globular cluster candidates. We investigate both the hardness ratios and combined spectra of the sources. They exhibit a distribution of X-ray colors similar to those seen in other early-type galaxies. We find that there is a population of highly absorbed sources located at large distances from the center of the galaxy. The overall spatial distribution of sources…
(Abridged) We present an analysis of a Chandra ACIS-S observation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 720 to verify the existence of a dark matter (DM) halo and to measure its ellipticity. The ACIS-S3 image reveals over 60 point sources. For semi-major axes a<~150" (18.2h_{70}^{-1} kpc) the ellipticity of the diffuse emission is ex ~0.15, which is less than the values 0.2-0.3 obtained from ROSAT because the point sources contaminated the ROSAT values. The Chandra data confirm the ~20 deg position angle (PA) twist discovered by ROSAT, but the Chandra twist is more gradual also because of the point sou…
We analyze recent simultaneous Chandra/RXTE observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4945. The unprecedented spatial resolution of Chandra means we are able to separate the spectra of the nucleus, starburst and superwind regions, while the RXTE data extend the spectrum to higher energies. The extreme absorbing column of $N_H\sim 4\times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ means that the nucleus is only seen directly above 8--10 keV, while the lower energy spectrum from the nuclear region in Chandra is dominated by reflection. By contrast, the superwind is dominated by emission from hot plasma, but the starburs…
(Abridged) We report the results of a 20 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the interacting galaxy pair NGC 4485/4490. A total of 29 discrete X-ray sources are found coincident with NGC 4490, but only one is found within NGC 4485. The sources range in observed X-ray luminosity from ~ 2 x 10^37 to ~ 4 x 10^39 erg/s. Extensive diffuse X-ray emission is detected coincident with the disk of NGC 4490, and in the tidal tail of NGC 4485, which appears to be thermal in nature and hence the signature of a hot ISM in both galaxies. However, the diffuse component accounts for only ~ 10% of the total X-ray …
(Abridged) We investigate the ionized environment of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 985 with a new Chandra-HETGS observation and an archival BeppoSAX observation. Two absorption components are clearly required to fit absorption features observed in the Chandra spectrum. The components have a difference of 29 in ionization parameter and 3 in column density. The presence of the low ionization component is evidenced by an Fe M-shell unresolved transition array (UTA) produced by charge states VII to XIII. The high ionization phase is required by the presence of broad absorption features arising from sev…
We present a detailed \chandra study of the galaxy group NGC 1550. For its temperature (1.37$\pm$0.01 keV) and velocity dispersion ($\sim$ 300 km s$^{-1}$), the NGC 1550 group is one of the most luminous known galaxy groups (L$_{\rm bol}$ = 1.65$\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ within 200 kpc, or 0.2 \rv). We find that within $\sim 60$ kpc, where the gas cooling time is less than a Hubble time, the gas temperature decreases continuously toward the center, implying the existence of a cooling core. The temperature also declines beyond $\sim$ 100 kpc (or 0.1 \rv). There is a remarkable similarity of t…
We describe results from our initial study of the diffuse X-ray emission structures in NGC 5128 (Cen A) using the Chandra X-ray Observatory observations. The high-angular resolution Chandra images reveal multi-scale X-ray struct ures with unprecedented detail and clarity. The large scale structures suggest complex symmetry, including a component possibly associated with the inner radio lobes, and a separate component with an orthogonal symmetry that may be associated with the galaxy as a whole. We detect arc-like soft X-ray structures, extending to ~8 kpc in the direction perpendicular to the …
From the analysis of a ~100 ks Chandra observation of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1569, we have found that the X-ray point sources, CXOU 043048.1+645050 and CXOU 043048.6+645058, showed significant time variability. During this observation, the X-ray flux of CXOU 043048.1+645050 increased by 10 times in only 2 x 10^4 s. Since the spectrum in its bright phase was fitted with a disk blackbody model with kT_in ~0.43 keV and the bolometric luminosity is L_bol ~10^38 ergs s^-1, this source is an X-ray binary with a stellar mass black-hole. Since the spectrum in its faint phase was also fitted wi…
