Thermal response functions of strongly correlated electron systems are of appreciable interest to the larger scientific community both theoretically and technologically. Here we focus on the infinitely correlated t-J model on a geometrically frustrated two-dimensional triangular lattice.
Using exact diagonalization on a finite sized system we calculate the dynamical thermal response functions in order to determine the thermopower, Lorenz number, and dimensionless figure of merit. The dynamical thermal response functions is compared to the infinite frequency limit and shown to be very weak functions of frequency, hence, establishing the validity of the high frequency formalism recently proposed by Shastry for the thermopower, Lorenz number, and the dimensionless figure of merit. Further, the thermopower is demonstrated to have a low to mid temperature enhancement when the sign of the hopping parameter $t$ is switched from positive to negative for the geometrically frustrated lattice considered.
The effect of correlated hopping on the charge and heat transport is investigated for the Falicov-Kimball model. Exact solutions for the electrical and thermal conductivities and thermoelectric power are obtained within the dynamical mean field theory. The temperature dependences of the transport coefficients are analysed for particular values of correlated hopping which correspond to the significant reconstruction of the density of states and transport function. The cases with strong enhancement of thermoelectric properties are elucidated.
We study thermoelectric transport at low temperatures in correlated Kondo insulators, motivated by the recent observation of a high thermoelectric figure of merit(ZT) in $FeSb_2$ at $T \sim 10 K$. Even at room temperature, correlations have the potential to lead to high ZT, as in $YbAl_3$, one of the most widely used thermoelectric metals. At low temperature correlation effects are especially worthy of study because fixed band structures are unlikely to give rise to the very small energy gaps $E_g \sim 5 kT$ necessary for a weakly correlated material to function efficiently at low temperature.…
We investigated size effects on thermoelectricity in thin films of a strongly correlated layered cobaltate. At room temperature, the thermopower is independent of thickness down to 6 nm. This unusual behavior is inconsistent with the Fuchs-Sondheimer theory, which is used to describe conventional metals and semiconductors, and is attributed to the strong electron correlations in this material. Although the resistivity increases, as expected, below a critical thickness of $\sim$ 30 nm. The temperature dependent thermopower is similar for different thicknesses but resistivity shows systematic ch…
We present measurements of the thermoelectric power of the plutonium-based unconventional superconductor PuCoGa$_{5}$. The data is interpreted within a phenomenological model for the quasiparticle density of states of intermediate valence systems and the results are compared with results obtained from photoemission spectroscopy. The results are consistent with intermediate valence nature of 5$f$-electrons, furthermore, we propose that measurements of the Seebeck coefficient can be used as a probe of density of states in this material, thereby providing a link between transport measurements and…
We show that synthesis-induced Metal -Insulator transition (MIT) for electronic transport along the orthorombic c axis of FeSb$_{2}$ single crystals has greatly enhanced electrical conductivity while keeping the thermopower at a relatively high level. By this means, the thermoelectric power factor is enhanced to a new record high S$^{2}$$σ$ $\sim$ 8000 $μ$WK$^{-2}$cm$^{-1}$ at 28 K. We find that the large thermopower in FeSb$_{2}$ can be rationalized within the correlated electron model with two bands having large quasiparaticle disparity, whereas MIT is induced by subtle structural difference…
The layered cobaltite [Ca$_2$CoO$_3$]$_{0.62}$[CoO$_2$], often expressed as the approximate formula Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$, is a promising candidate for efficient oxide thermoelectrics but an origin of its unusual thermoelectric transport is still in debate. Here we investigate \textit{in-plane} anisotropy of the transport properties in a broad temperature range to examine the detailed conduction mechanism. The in-plane anisotropy between $a$ and $b$ axes is clearly observed both in the resistivity and the thermopower, which is qualitatively understood with a simple band structure of the triangular…
The effect of correlated hopping on the charge and heat transport of strongly correlated particles is studied for the Falicov-Kimball model on the Bethe lattice. Exact solutions for the one particle density of states (DOS) and two particle transport function (the "quasiparticle" scattering time) are derived using dynamical mean field theory. For a wide range of the correlated hopping, the transport function exhibits singularities due to the resonant two-particle contribution, whereas the one particle DOS does not show any anomalous features. By tuning the number of itinerant electrons, so as t…
An influence of the localization of itinerant electrons induced by correlated hopping on the electronic charge and heat transport is discussed for the lightly doped Mott insulator phase of the Falicov-Kimball model. The case of strongly reduced hopping amplitude between the sites with occupied f-electron levels, when an additional band of localized d-electron states could appear on the DOS in the Mott gap, is considered. Due to the electron-hole asymmetry and anomalous features on the DOS and transport function induced by correlated hopping, a strong enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient is o…
We show that the colossal thermoelectric power, $S(T)$, observed in the correlated semiconductor FeSb$_2$ below 30\,K is accompanied by a huge Nernst coefficient $ν(T)$ and magnetoresistance MR$(T)$. Markedly, the latter two quantities are enhanced in a strikingly similar manner. While in the same temperature range, $S(T)$ of the reference compound FeAs$_2$, which has a seven-times larger energy gap, amounts to nearly half of that of FeSb$_2$, its $ν(T)$ and MR$(T)$ are intrinsically different to FeSb$_2$: they are smaller by two orders of magnitude and have no common features. With the charge…
In this paper we investigate the effect of strong electronic interactions on the thermoelectric properties of a simple generic system, consisting of a single correlated layer sandwiched between two metallic leads. Results will be given for the linear response regime as well as beyond, for which a full nonequilibrium many-body calculation is performed, based on nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). As impurity solver we use the auxiliary master equation approach, which addresses the impurity problem within a finite auxiliary system consisting of a correlated impurity, a small numbe…
We theoretically study the nonequilibrium thermoelectric transport properties of a strongly-correlated molecule (or quantum dot) embedded in a tunnel junction. Assuming that the coupling of the molecule to the contacts is asymmetric, we determine the nonlinear current driven by the voltage and temperature gradients by using the perturbation theory. However, the subsystem consisting of the molecule strongly coupled to one of the contacts is solved by using the numerical renormalization group method, which allows for accurate description of Kondo correlations. We study the temperature gradient a…
We study the thermoelectric effect of two-dimensional metals on a square lattice within semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory with particular focus on electron-electron scattering. We compute the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient as a function of band filling and temperature for generically chosen hopping parameters in a two-dimensional tight-binding model. The Boltzmann equation is solved numerically after computing the full collision integral, taking the angular and radial degrees of freedom into account. These degrees of freedom of the collision integral, neglected in t…
The effects of electronic correlations and orbital degeneracy on thermoelectric properties are studied within the context of multi-orbital Hubbard models on different lattices. We use dynamical mean field theory with iterative perturbation theory as a solver to calculate the self-energy of the models in wide range of interaction strengths. The Seebeck coefficient, which measures the voltage drop in response to a temperature gradient across the system, shows a non-monotonic behavior with temperatures in the presence of strong correlations. This anomalous behavior is associated with a crossover …
We investigate nonlinear thermoelectric transport through quantum impurity systems with strong on-site interactions. We show that the steady-state transport through interacting quantum impurities in contact with electron reservoirs at significantly different temperatures can be captured by an effective-equilibrium density matrix, expressed compactly in terms of the Lippmann-Schwinger operators of the system. In addition, the reservoirs can be maintained at arbitrary chemical potentials. The interplay between the temperature gradient and bias voltage gives rise to a non-trivial breaking of part…
We study the low temperature properties of the differential response of the current to a temperature gradient at finite voltage in a single level quantum dot including electron-electron interaction, non-symmetric couplings to the leads and non-linear effects. The calculated response is significantly enhanced in setups with large asymmetries between the tunnel couplings. In the investigated range of voltages and temperatures with corresponding energies up to several times the Kondo energy scale, the maximum response is enhanced nearly an order of magnitude with respect to symmetric coupling to …
We study nonequilibrium thermoelectric transport properties of a correlated impurity connected to two leads for temperatures below the Kondo scale. At finite bias, for which a current flows across the leads, we investigate the differential response of the current to a temperature gradient. In particular, we compare the influence of a bias voltage and of a finite temperature on this thermoelectric response. This is of interest from a fundamental point of view to better understand the two different decoherence mechanisms produced by a bias voltage and by temperature. Our results show that in thi…

The thermoelectric transport properties of nanostructured devices continue to attract attention from theorists and experimentalist alike as the spatial confinement allows for a controlled approach to transport properties of correlated matter. Most of the existing work, however, focuses on thermoelectric transport in the linear regime despite the fact that the nonlinear conductance of correlated quantum dots has been studied in some detail throughout the last decade. Here, we review our recent work on the effect of particle-hole asymmetry on the nonlinear transport properties in the vicinity of…
Thermoelectric properties of the system La$_2$NiO$_{4+δ}$ have been studied ab initio. Large Seebeck coefficient values are predicted for the parent compound, and to some extent remain in the hole-doped metallic phase, accompanied of an increase in the conductivity. This system, due to its layered structure would be a suitable candidate for an improvement of its thermoelectric figure of merit by nanostructurization in thin films, that has already been shown to increase the electrical conductivity ($σ$). Our calculations show that in the region around La$_2$NiO$_{4.05}$ the system has a large t…
We present an analytical study of a strongly correlated quantum dot-based thermoelectric particle-exchange heat engine for both finite and infinite on-dot Coulomb interaction. Employing Keldysh's non-equilibrium Green's function formalism for different decoupling schemes in the equation of motion, we have analyzed the thermoelectric properties within the non-linear transport regime. As the simplest mean-field approximation is insufficient for analyzing thermoelectric properties in the Coulomb blockade regime, one needs to employ a higher-order approximation to study strongly correlated QD-base…
Sodium cobaltate Na_xCoO_2 as dopable strongly correlated layered material with a triangular sublattice still poses a challenging problem in condensed matter. The intriguing interplay between lattice, charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom leads to a complex phase diagram bounded by a nominal Mott (x=0) regime and a band-insulating (x=1) phase. By means of the charge self-consistent density functional theory (DFT) plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) scheme, built on a pseudopotential framework combined with a continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo solver, we here study the one-particle s…
We have grown single crystals of Na$_x$Ca$_y$CoO$_2$ and determined their superstructures as a function of composition using neutron and x-ray diffraction. Inclusion of Ca$^{2+}$ stabilises a single superstructure across a wide range of temperatures and concentrations. The superstructure in the Na$^+$ layers is based on arrays of divacancy clusters with Ca$^{2+}$ ions occupying the central site, and it has an ideal concentration Na$_{4/7}$Ca$_{1/7}$CoO$_2$. Previous measurements of the thermoelectric properties on this system are discussed in light of this superstructure. Na$_{4/7}$Ca$_{1/7}$C…
In many strongly correlated electron metals the thermoelectric power has a non-monotonic temperature dependence and values that are orders of magnitude larger than for elemental metals. Kelvin proposed a particularly simple expression for the thermopower in terms of the temperature dependence of the chemical potential. We consider a Hubbard model on an anisotropic triangular lattice at half filling, a minimal effective Hamiltonian for several classes of organic charge transfer salts. The finite temperature Lanczos method is used to calculate the temperature dependence of the thermopower using …
Engineered $Na_{0.75}CoO_2$ is considered a prime candidate to achieve high-efficiency thermoelectric systems to regenerate electricity from waste heat. In this work, three elements with outmost electronic configurations, (1) an open d shell (Ni), (2) a closed d shell (Zn), and (3) a half filled f shell (Eu) with maximum unpaired electrons, were selected to outline the dopants' effects on electronic and crystallographic structures of $Na_{0.75}CoO_2$. Systematic $ab$ $initio$ density functional calculations with $DMOL^3$ package showed that the Ni and Zn were more stable when substituting Co w…
In the present work, we have reported the temperature dependent thermopower ($α$) behavior of La$_{0.75}$Ba$_{0.25}$CoO$_{3}$ compound in the temperature range 300-600 K. Using the Heikes formula, the estimated value of $α$ corresponding to high-spin configuration of Co$^{3+}$ and Co$^{4+}$ ions is found to be $\sim$$16$ $μ$V/K, which is close to the experimental value, $\sim$13 $μ$V/K, observed at $\sim$600 K. The temperature dependent TE behavior of the compound is studied by combining the WIEN2K and BoltzTrap code. The self consistency field calculations show that the compound have ferromag…
Quantum strongly correlated matter exhibits properties which are not easily explainable in the conventional framework of Fermi liquids. Universal effective field theory tools are applicable in these cases regardless of the microscopic details of the quantum system, since they are based on symmetries. It is necessary, however, to construct these effective tools in full generality, avoiding restrictions coming from particular microscopic descriptions which may inadequately constrain the coefficients that enter in the effective theory. In this work we demonstrate on explicit examples how the nove…
We study the thermoelectric conductivities of a strongly correlated system in the presence of a magnetic field by the gauge/gravity duality. We consider a class of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theories with axion fields imposing momentum relaxation. General analytic formulas for the direct current(DC) conductivities and the Nernst signal are derived in terms of the black hole horizon data. For an explicit model study, we analyse in detail the dyonic black hole modified by momentum relaxation. In this model, for small momentum relaxation, the Nernst signal shows a bell-shaped dependence on the magn…
Signatures of the Kondo effect in the electrical conductance of strongly correlated quantum dots are well understood both experimentally and theoretically, while those in the thermopower have been the subject of recent interest. Here, we extend theoretical work [T. A. Costi, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 100}, 161106(R) (2019)] on the field-dependent thermopower of such systems, and carry out calculations in order to address a recent experiment on the field dependent thermoelectric response of Kondo-correlated quantum dots [A. Svilans {\em et al.,} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 121}, 206801 (2018)]. In addition t…
