We update the extraction of |Vub| from exclusive semileptonic B to pi decays, combining experimental partial branching fraction information with theoretical form factor calculations, using the recently revised HPQCD results for the form factors f_+ and f_0. We use Omnes representations to provide the required parametrisations of the form factors. The extracted value is 10^3 |Vub| = 3.47+/-0.29+/-0.03, in striking agreement with |Vub| extracted using all other inputs in CKM fits and showing some disagreement with |Vub| extracted from inclusive semileptonic B to pi decays.
We use Omnes representations of the form factors V, A_1 and A_2 for exclusive semileptonic B--> rho decays, and apply them to combine experimental partial branching fraction information with theoretical calculations of the three form factors to extract |Vub|. We find a slightly lower result, |Vub|=(2.8 +- 0.2)x 10^{-3}, than the values extracted from exclusive semileptonic B-->pi decays and using all other inputs in CKM fits. The disagreement is greater when we compare to the result extracted from inclusive B -> X_u l nu decays.
We use Omnes representations of the form factors f_+ and f_0 for exclusive semileptonic B to pi decays, paying special attention to the treatment of the B* pole and its effect on f_+. We apply them to combine experimental partial branching fraction information with theoretical calculations of both form factors to extract |Vub|. The precision we achieve is competitive with the inclusive determination and we do not find a significant discrepancy between our result, |Vub| =(3.90+/-0.32+/-0.18)10^(-3), and the inclusive world average value, (4.45+/-0.20+/-0.26)10^(-3).
The determination of |Vub| from inclusive semileptonic B decays is limited by uncertainties in modelling the decay distributions in b->ulnu transitions. The largest uncertainties arise from the limited knowledge of the appropriate b quark mass and Fermi momentum to use in the parameterization of the shape function. This paper presents a new method in which these shape function parameters are constrained by the same data used to measure |Vub|. The method requires measurements of the momenta of both the charged lepton and the neutrino in semileptonic B decays. From these quantities two complemen…
The determination of |Vcb| and |Vub| from semileptonic B decay is reviewed with a critical discussion of the theoretical uncertainties. Future prospects and limitations are also discussed.
The determinations of |Vcb| and |Vub| from semileptonic B decays are reviewed with a critical discussion of the theoretical uncertainties and concentrating on recent developments. Future prospects and limitations are also discussed.
We review how to determine |Vub| from inclusive semileptonic B decay using combined cuts on the leptonic and hadronic invariant masses to eliminate the b -> c background. This leads to a determination of |Vub| with theoretical uncertainty at the 5 -10% level.
B meson semileptonic decays are a crucial tool in our studies of the quark mixing parameters Vcb and Vub. The interplay between experimental and theoretical challenges to achieve precision in the determination of these fundamental parameters is discussed.
This talk is a short review on the theoretical issues and uncertainties in the calculation of partial decay rates in inclusive B decays. The main emphasis is on charmless semileptonic decays, the B -> X(s) gamma photon spectrum, and the extraction of Vub using model-independent methods.
A brief review of the theoretical description of exclusive and inclusive semileptonic charm decays is given. In light of the recent experimental puzzles in leptonic charm decays, the complementary role of semileptonic modes is emphasized. The relevance of semileptonic charm decay studies to the precise determination of the Vub CKM matrix element from semileptonic B decays is also discussed. Some interesting and important theoretical challenges are mentioned.
In this talk I review the status of our ability to extract the CKM matrix elements |Vub| and |Vcb| from semileptonic decays. I will review both exclusive and inclusive methods and put a strong emphasis on how to ensure keeping the extractions model independent.
We review the theory of the determination of the CKM elements Vcb and Vub. Particular attention is paid to the determination of Vcb through inclusive semileptonic B decays to charm using a moment analysis, since this has shown most progress recently. A precise method for the determination of Vub via exclusive decays is described.
Recent analyses of the LEP and Upsilon(4S) data have better outlined the picture of semileptonic B decays. Results on inclusive and exclusive decay branching fractions and on the extraction of the |Vub| and |Vcb| elements of the CKM mixing matrix are discussed, together with some of the still open questions and the sources of model systematics.
In the ratio of ratios of rates for radiative and semileptonic decays of B and D to K* and rho mesons the non-computable form factors mostly cancel out. The resulting method for the determination of Vub is largely free of hadronic uncertainties, raising the prospect of a precise determination of Vub.
We investigate the relation between the E_gamma spectrum in B->X_s gamma decay and the P+ spectrum in semileptonic B->X_u l nu decay (P+ is the hadronic energy minus the absolute value of the hadronic three-momentum), which provides in principle the theoretically simplest determination of Vub from any of the "shape function regions" of B->X_u l nu spectra. We calculate analytically the P+ spectrum to order alpha_s^2 beta_0, and study its relation to the B->X_s gamma photon spectrum to eliminate the leading dependence on nonperturbative effects. We compare the result of fixed order perturbation…
We present new lattice results of the K -> pion semileptonic form factors obtained from simulations with two flavors of dynamical twisted-mass fermions, using pion masses as light as 260 MeV. Our main result is f+(0) = 0.9560 (84), which, combined with the latest experimental data for Kl3 decays, leads to |V_{us}| = 0.2267 (5)_exp (20)_f+(0). Using the PDG(2008) determinations of |Vud| and |Vub| our result implies for the unitarity relation |Vud|**2 + |Vus|**2 + |Vub|**2 = 1.0004 (15). For the O(p**6) term of the chiral expansion of f+(0) we get Df = f+(0) - 1 - f2 = -0.0214 (84).
The recently measured semileptonic D_s decay rate can be used to constrain weak annihilation (WA) effects in semileptonic D and B decays. We revisit the theoretical predictions for inclusive semileptonic D_{(s)} decays using a variety of quark mass schemes. The most reliable results are obtained if the fits to B decay distributions are used to eliminate the charm quark mass dependence, without using any specific charm mass scheme. Our fit to the available data shows that WA is smaller than commonly assumed. There is no indication that the WA octet contribution (which is better constrained than…
We have studied extracting $|\vub/\vcb|$ by calculating the ratios ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0\to D_s^{(*)-}(π^+,ρ^+))/{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0\to D_s^{(*)-}D^{(*)+})$ including penguin effects within the factorization assumption. The ratios involving $\bar{B}^0\to D_s^-D^{+}$ mode have considerable penguin corrections ($\sim 15%$ at the amplitude level), but those involving $\bar{B}^0\to D_s^-D^{*+}$ mode have relatively small penguin corrections. On the other hand, the $\bar{B}^0\to D_s^-D^{+}$ mode has smaller form-factor dependance. Therefore, these ratios complement each other in measuring $\vub/\vcb$.…
We discuss our ongoing effort to calculate form factors for several B and Bs semileptonic decays. We have recently completed the first unquenched calculation of the form factors for the rare decay B -> K ll. Extrapolated over the full kinematic range of q^2 via model-independent z expansion, these form factor results allow us to calculate several Standard Model observables. We compare with experiment (Belle, BABAR, CDF, and LHCb) where possible and make predictions elsewhere. We discuss preliminary results for Bs -> K l nu which, when combined with anticipated experimental results, will provid…
This is a limited review and update of the status of Heavy Flavor Physics. After we review the flavor problem we discuss a number of topics: recent puzzles in purely leptonic D and B decays and their possible resolutions, mixing in neutral B and D mesons, the determination of |Vcb| and |Vub| from semileptonic decays, and we conclude with radiative B decays.
The B -> K^* gamma branching fraction is predicted using heavy quark spin symmetry at large recoil to relate the tensor and (axial-)vector form factors, using heavy quark flavor symmetry to relate the B decay form factors to the measured D -> K^* l nu form form factors, and extrapolating the semileptonic B decay form factors to large recoil assuming nearest pole dominance. This prediction agrees with data surprisingly well, and we comment on its implications for the extraction of |Vub| from B -> rho l nu.
I review the phenomenology of exclusive Bbar -> Kbar pi l^+ l^- decays, with focus on the intermediate resonant Kbar^*(892) mode. The status of angular observables at both ends of the dilepton mass spectrum is revisited. Constraints on the b -> s Wilson coefficients C_7,C_9,C_10 based on 2011 data from the B factories, CDF and LHCb are presented.
The Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) has become an extremely powerful tool in flavor physics. For charm decays, where the expansion parameters $α_s(m_c)$ and $Λ_{\rm QCD}/m_c$ are bigger than for bottom decays, it remains to be seen if the HQE can be applied with similar success. Nevertheless, to make optimal use of the plethora of data already available and coming in the near future, a better understanding of HQE for charm decays is crucial. This paper discusses in detail how the HQE for charm decays is set up, what is the role of four-quark (weak annihilation) operators and how this compares to t…
We critically re-examine the case for and against a sizeable right-handed component in the $b\to c$ charged current coupling with a strength $ξ$ relative to the conventional left-handed current. Using data from CLEO on the decay $B\to D^*\ell ν$, as well as our knowledge of $V_{cb}$ extracted from both inclusive and exclusive processes, we are able to determine the presently allowed parameter space for $ξ$ via HQET. We then identify several observables which could be measured at $B$ factories to either strengthen these constraints or otherwise observe right-handed currents. This parameter spac…
The increasing accuracy of experimental results for the exclusive, semileptonic decay B -> pi l nu requires a similarly accurate calculation of the hadronic matrix elements, to determine |Vub|. We present preliminary results for the form factors of the B to light meson decay mode. Using results from three lattices in the range 5.7 <= beta <= 6.1 we study the dependence on the lattice spacing.
The question of the renormalization scheme dependence of the $τ$ semileptonic decay rate is revisited in response to a recent criticism. Particular attention is payed to a distinction between a consistent quantitative description of this dependence and the actual selection of a subset of ``acceptable'' renormalization schemes. It is argued that a reasonable universal measure of the renormalization scheme dependence can be formulated, which gives encouraging results when applied to various physical quantities, including the semileptonic $τ$ decay rate.
We report on a lattice calculation of the form factors A_0 and A_3 for the pseudoscalar to vector meson semileptonic decay Bbar^0 to rho^+ l^- nubar_l. We find that resonant (or pole-type) contributions alone are unable to describe these two form factors simultaneously. For the quantity A_0(q^2=0), which is important phenomenologically for the determination of |Vub|, we extract a range of values, A_0(q^2=0) = (0.16--0.35) +0.09-0.06, where the range is due to systematic uncertainty and the quoted error is statistical. We have also determined A_2(q^2=0) = 0.28 +0.09-0.06 +0.04-0.05.
The semileptonic B-> Xu l nu decays allow a pretty clean determination of the CKM matrix element |Vub|. Nevertheless, the presence of weak-annihilation effects near the end-point of the q2 spectrum introduces uncertainties in the inclusive calculation, requiring the use of non-perturbative techniques like heavy meson chiral perturbation theory and large NC limit.
