We investigate cosmological constraints on primordial isocurvature and tensor perturbations, using recent observations of the cosmic microwave background and the large scale structure. We find that present observations are consistent with purely adiabatic initial conditions for the structure formation under any priors on correlations of isocurvature modes, and upper limits on the contribution of isocurvature and tensor perturbations are presented. We also apply the obtained constraints to some specific theoretical models, axion isocurvature perturbation models and curvaton models, and give some implications for theoretical models.
We examine the consequences of the existence of correlated mixtures of adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations on the CMB and large scale structure. In particular, we consider the four types of ``elementary'' totally correlated hybrid initial conditions, where only one of the four matter species (photons, baryons, neutrinos, CDM) deviates from adiabaticity. We then study the height and position of the acoustic peaks with respect to the large angular scale plateau as a function of the isocurvature to adiabatic ratio.
The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies measurements can provide many clues about the Universe. Although the common belief is that they will allow a very precise measurement of the cosmological parameters (that is, the current state of the Universe), they will alternatively give interesting informations about the state of the initial perturbations (that is, the state of the Universe at the end of inflation). In this paper, we study the observational consequences on the CMB anisotropies of some wide set of inital conditions, with a correlated mixture of adiabatic and isocurvature per…
Prospects for testing the adiabaticity of the primordial cosmological perturbations using MAP and PLANCK are evaluated. The most general cosmological perturbation in a universe with just baryons, photons, neutrinos, and a cold dark matter (CDM) component is described. In addition to the familiar adiabatic mode, there are four nonsingular isocurvature modes: a baryon isocurvature mode, a CDM isocurvature mode, a neutrino density isocurvature mode, and a neutrino velocity isocurvature mode. The most general perturbation is described by a 5x5, positive-definite, symmetric, matrix-valued function …
We investigate in detail the question whether a non-vanishing cosmological constant is required by present-day cosmic microwave background and large scale structure data when general isocurvature initial conditions are allowed for. We also discuss differences between the usual Bayesian and the frequentist approaches in data analysis. We show that the COBE-normalized matter power spectrum is dominated by the adiabatic mode and therefore breaks the degeneracy between initial conditions which is present in the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. We find that in a flat universe the Bayesian …
We have performed the most comprehensive predictions of the temperature fluctuations \dtt in the primeval isocurvature baryon models to see whether or not the models are consistent with the recent data on the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. More specifically, we computed the \dtt corresponding to the experimental set-up by the South-Pole and the Owens Valley experiments as well as the COBE satellite. The amplitudes of the predicted \dtt are normalized by means of the COBE 10$^\circ$ data. The resulting constraints on the models are presented on $n - Ω_b$ plane in the case of $λ_0=1-Ω…
Present cosmological data are well explained assuming purely adiabatic perturbations, but an admixture of isocurvature perturbations is also permitted. We use a Bayesian framework to compare the performance of cosmological models including isocurvature modes with the purely adiabatic case; this framework automatically and consistently penalizes models which use more parameters to fit the data. We compute the Bayesian evidence for fits to a dataset comprised of WMAP and other microwave anisotropy data, the galaxy power spectrum from 2dFGRS and SDSS, and Type Ia supernovae luminosity distances. …
The most general homogeneous and isotropic statistical ensemble of linear scalar perturbations which are regular at early times, in a universe with only photons, baryons, neutrinos, and a cold dark matter (CDM) component, is described by a 5x5 symmetric matrix-valued generalization of the power spectrum. This description is complete if the perturbations are Gaussian, and even in the non-Gaussian case describes all observables quadratic in the small perturbations. The matrix valued power spectrum describes the auto- and cross-correlations of the adiabatic, baryon isocurvature, CDM isocurvature,…
We consider the evolution of perturbed cosmological spacetime with multiple scalar fields in Einstein gravity. A complete set of scalar-type perturbation equations is presented in a gauge-ready form, and we derived the closed set of second-order differential equations in several useful forms. Conserved behaviors of the perturbed three-space curvature in the comoving gauge, $ϕ_v$, under several conditions are clarified. Under the slow-roll conditions, the adiabatic and isocurvature modes decouple from each other, and in the large-scale limit we have (i) the adiabatic mode is generally conserved…
The role of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarisation data in constraining the presence of primordial isocurvature modes is examined. While the MAP satellite mission will be unable to simultaneously constrain isocurvature modes and cosmological parameters, the PLANCK mission will be able to set strong limits on the presence of isocurvature modes if it makes a precise measurement of the CMB polarisation sky. We find that if we allow for the possible presence of isocurvature modes, the recently obtained BOOMERANG measurement of the curvature of the universe fails. However, a comparably sens…
We consider the detection possibilities of isocurvature fluctuations in the future CMB satellite experiments MAP and Planck for different cosmological reference models. We present a simultaneous 10 parameter fit (8 for the case of open model) to determine the correlations between the cosmological parameters, including isocurvature cold dark matter contribution to the anisotropy. Assuming that polarization information can be fully exploited, we find that an isocurvature perturbation can be detected by the Planck Surveyor if the ratio of the initial isocurvature and adiabatic perturbation amplit…
We study adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations produced during a period of cosmological inflation. We compute the power spectra and cross spectra of the curvature and isocurvature modes, as well as the tensor perturbation spectrum in terms of the slow-roll parameters. We provide two consistency relations for the amplitudes and spectral indices of the corresponding power spectra. These relations represent a definite prediction and a test of inflationary models which should be adopted when studying cosmological perturbations through the Cosmic Microwave Background in forthcoming satellite exp…
We consider Bayesian constraints on standard isocurvature baryon models from the slope and normalization of the anisotropy power spectrum detected by the COBE DMR experiment in their two year maps. In conjunction with either the amplitude of matter fluctuations $σ_8$ {\it or} its slope, all open models are ruled out at greater than 95\% confidence, whereas cosmological constant $Λ$ dominated models are constrained to be highly ionized. By including the COBE FIRAS 95\% confidence upper limit on spectral distortion, we further reduce the available parameter space for $Λ$ models by excluding thes…
We investigate the dependence of large angular scale cosmic microwave background anisotropies on various initial conditions, including both adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations and the initial power law index $n$, in a variety of low-$Ω$ cosmological models. Cosmological constant- dominated flat models and inflationary open adiabatic models, with $n_{\rm eff}<1$, and open isocurvature models, with $n_{\rm eff} \simeq 2$, are significantly constrained by the present observations.
We investigate the evolution of cosmological perturbations in scenarios with a quintessence scalar field, both analytically and numerically. In the tracking regime for quintessence, we find the long wavelength solutions for quintessential perturbations. We discuss the possibility of isocurvature modes generated by the quintessence sector and their impact on observations.
The observed CMBR dipole is generally interpreted as a Doppler effect arising from the motion of the Earth relative to the CMBR frame. An alternative interpretation, proposed in the last years, is that the dipole results from ultra-large scale isocurvature perturbations. We examine this idea in the context of open cosmologies and show that the isocurvature interpretation is not valid in an open universe, unless it is extremely close to a flat universe, $|Ω_0 -1|< 10^{-4}$.
We study the evolution of the cosmological perturbations after inflation in curvaton models where the non-relativistic curvaton decays into both radiation and a cold dark matter component. We calculate the primordial curvature and correlated isocurvature perturbations inherited by the radiation and cold dark matter after the curvaton has decayed. We give the transfer coefficient in terms of the initial curvaton density relative to the curvaton decay rate.
We show that the isocurvature perturbations imply that the gravitationally produced superheavy dark matter must have masses larger than few times the Hubble expansion rate at the end of inflation. This together with the bound on tensor to scalar contribution to the CMB induces a lower bound on the reheating temperature for superheavy dark matter to be about 10^7 GeV. Hence, if the superheavy dark matter scenario is embedded in supergravity models with gravity mediated SUSY breaking, the gravitino bound will squeeze this scenario. Furthermore, the CMB constraint strengthens the statement that g…
We use cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large-scale structure data to constrain cosmological models where the primordial perturbations have both an adiabatic and a cold dark matter (CDM) isocurvature component. We allow for a possible correlation between the adiabatic and isocurvature modes, and for different spectral indices for the power in each mode and for their correlation. We do a likelihood analysis with 11 independent parameters. We discuss the effect of choosing the pivot scale for the definition of amplitude parameters. The upper limit for the isocurvature fraction is 18% around…
Using both cosmic microwave background and large scale structure data, we put stringent bounds on the possible cold dark matter, baryon and neutrino isocurvature contributions to primordial fluctuations in the Universe. Neglecting the possible effects of spatial curvature, tensor perturbations and reionization, we perform a Bayesian likelihood analysis with nine free parameters, and find that the relative amplitude of the isocurvature component cannot be larger than about a few percent for uncorrelated models. On the other hand, for correlated adiabatic and isocurvature components, the ratio c…
We study cosmological perturbations in two-field inflation, allowing for non-standard kinetic terms. We calculate analytically the spectra of curvature and isocurvature modes at Hubble crossing, up to first order in the slow-roll parameters. We also compute numerically the evolution of the curvature and isocurvature modes from well within the Hubble radius until the end of inflation. We show explicitly for a few examples, including the recently proposed model of `roulette' inflation, how isocurvature perturbations affect significantly the curvature perturbation between Hubble crossing and the …
In the chaotic inflation models, quantum fluctuations for axion fields lead to the overproduction of domain walls and too large isocurvature fluctuations which is inconsistent with the observations of cosmic microwave background anisotropies. These problems are solved by assuming a very flat potential for the Peccei-Quinn scalar. As the simplest possibility, we consider a model where the Peccei-Quinn scalar is an inflaton itself and show that the isocurvature fluctuations can be comparable with the adiabatic ones. We investigate cosmological implications in the case that both adiabatic and iso…
We present a systematic treatment of the initial conditions and evolution of cosmological perturbations in a universe containing photons, baryons, neutrinos, cold dark matter, and a scalar quintessence field. By formulating the evolution in terms of a differential equation involving a matrix acting on a vector comprised of the perturbation variables, we can use the familiar language of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. As the largest eigenvalue of the evolution matrix is fourfold degenerate, it follows that there are four dominant modes with non-diverging gravitational potential at early times, co…
We study cosmological perturbations in the case that present-day matter consists of a mixture of inflaton and curvaton decay products. We calculate how the curvaton perturbations are transferred to its decay products in the general case when it does not behave like dust. Taking into account that the decay products of the inflaton can also have perturbations results in an interesting mixture of correlated adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations. In particular, negative correlation can improve the fit to the CMB data by lowering the angular power in the Sachs-Wolfe plateau without changing the …
Recently high quality data of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies have been published. In this work we study to which extent the cosmological parameters determined by using this data depend on assumptions about the initial conditions. We show that for generic initial conditions, not only the best fit values are very different but, and this is our main result, the allowed parameter range enlarges dramatically.
We develop a general formalism for analyzing linear perturbations in multiple-field cosmological inflation based on the gauge-ready approach. Our inflationary model consists of an arbitrary number of scalar fields with non-minimal kinetic terms. We solve the equations for scalar- and tensor-type perturbations during inflation to the first order in slow-roll, and then obtain the super-horizon solutions for adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations after inflation. Analytic expressions for power-spectra and spectral indices arising from multiple-field inflation are presented.
We consider the evolution of perturbed cosmological spacetime with multiple fluids and fields in Einstein gravity. Equations are presented in gauge-ready forms, and are presented in various forms using the curvature (Φor ϕ_χ) and isocurvature (S_{(ij)} or δϕ_{(ij)}) perturbation variables in the general background with K and Λ. We clarify the conditions for conserved curvature and isocurvature perturbations in the large-scale limit. Evolutions of curvature perturbations in many different gauge conditions are analysed extensively. In the multi-field system we present a general solution to the l…
We obtain very stringent bounds on the possible cold dark matter, baryon and neutrino isocurvature contributions to the primordial fluctuations in the Universe, using recent cosmic microwave background and large scale structure data. In particular, we include the measured temperature and polarization power spectra from WMAP and ACBAR, as well as the matter power spectrum from the 2dF galaxy redshift survey. Neglecting the possible effects of spatial curvature, tensor perturbations and reionization, we perform a Bayesian likelihood analysis with nine free parameters, and find that the amplitude…
The improved data on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy allow a better determination of the adiabaticity of the primordial perturbation. Interestingly, we find that recent CMB data seem to favor a contribution of a primordial isocurvature mode where the entropy perturbation is positively correlated with the primordial curvature perturbation and has a large spectral index (niso ~ 3). With 4 additional parameters we obtain a better fit to the CMB data by Delta chi^2 = 9.7 compared to an adiabatic model. For this best-fit model the nonadiabatic contribution to the CMB temperature va…
We study cosmological perturbations generated from quantum fluctuations in multi-field inflationary scenarios in generalized Einstein theories, taking both adiabatic and isocurvature modes into account. In the slow-roll approximation, explicit closed-form long-wave solutions for field and metric perturbations are obtained by the analysis in the Einstein frame. Since the evolution of fluctuations depends on specific gravity theories, we make detailed investigations based on analytic and numerical approaches in four generalized Einstein theories: the Jordan-Brans-Dicke (JBD) theory, the Einstein…
We study adiabatic and isocurvature perturbation spectra produced by a period of cosmological inflation driven by two scalar fields. We show that there exists a model-independent consistency condition for all two-field models of slow-roll inflation, despite allowing for model-dependent linear processing of curvature and isocurvature perturbations during and after inflation on super-horizon scales. The scale-dependence of all spectra are determined solely in terms of slow-roll parameters during inflation and the dimensionless cross-correlation between curvature and isocurvature perturbations. W…
We study the evolution of perturbations during the domination and decay of a massive particle species whose mass and decay rate are allowed to depend on the expectation value of a light scalar field. We specialize in the case where the light field is slow-rolling, showing that during a phase of inhomogeneous mass-domination and decay the isocurvature perturbation of the light field is converted into a curvature perturbation with an efficiency which is nine times larger than when the mass is fixed. We derive a condition on the annihilation cross section and on the decay rate for the domination …
Generic models for the origin of structure predict a spectrum of initial fluctuations with a mixture of adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations. Using the observed anisotropies of the cosmic microwave backgound, the matter power spectra from large scale structure surveys and the luminosity distance vs redshift relation from supernovae of type Ia, we obtain strong bounds on the possible cold dark matter/baryon as well as neutrino isocurvature contributions to the primordial fluctations in the Universe. Neglecting the possible effects of spatial curvature and tensor perturbations, we perform a …
We present a mechanism for the origin of the large-scale curvature perturbation in our Universe by the late decay of a massive scalar field, the curvaton. The curvaton is light during a period of cosmological inflation, when it acquires a perturbation with an almost scale-invariant spectrum. This corresponds initially to an isocurvature density perturbation, which generates the curvature perturbation after inflation when the curvaton density becomes a significant fraction of the total. The isocurvature density perturbation disappears if the curvaton completely decays into thermalised radiation…
We investigate non-Gaussian isocurvature perturbations generated by the evolution of Goldstone modes during inflation. If a global symmetry is broken ``before'' inflation, the resulting Goldstone modes are disordered during inflation in a precise and predictable way. After inflation these Goldstone modes order themselves in a self-similar way, much as Goldstone modes in field ordering scenarios based on the Kibble mechanism. For $(H_{inf}^2/M_{pl}^2)\sim 10^{-6},$ through their gravitational interaction these Goldstone modes generate density perturbations of approximately the right magnitude t…
We investigate the phenomenology of warm inflation and present generic results about the evolution of the inflaton and radiation fields. The general conditions required for warm inflation to take place are derived and discussed. A comprehensive approach is presented for the generation of thermally induced adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations and the amplitude of their spectra calculated. In addition we derive the ratio of tensor-to-scalar perturbations and find the spectral indices for adiabatic, isocurvature and tensor perturbations formed in the warm inflationary era. These results are p…
In cascade inflation and some other string inflation models, collisions of mobile branes with other branes or orbifold planes occur and lead to interesting cosmological signatures. The fundamental M/string-theory description of these collisions is still lacking but it is clear that the inflaton looses part of its energy to some form of brane matter, e.g. a component of tensionless strings. In the absence of a fundamental description, we assume a general barotropic fluid on the brane, which absorbs part of the inflaton's energy. The fluid is modeled by a scalar with a suitable exponential poten…
We derive general analytic formulae for the power spectrum and spectral index of the curvature perturbation produced during inflation driven by a multi-component inflaton field, up to the second order in the slow-roll approximation. We do not assume any specific properties of the potential or the metric on the scalar field space, except for the slow-roll condition, Einstein gravity, and the absence of any permanent isocurvature modes.
In this paper, we consider cosmological perturbations on a brane universe embedded in an Anti-de Sitter bulk. We use a novel gauge, in which the full five-dimensional problem is in principle solvable. In this gauge we derive the equations for scalar, vector and tensor perturbations. These equations are necessary in order to calculate microwave background anisotropies in this particular scenario. Throughout the paper, we draw attention to the influence of the bulk gravitons, which act as a source for the perturbations on the brane. In addition, we find that isocurvature modes are generated due …
The quasi-isotropic inhomogeneous solution of the Einstein equations near a cosmological singularity in the form of a series expansion in the synchronous system of reference, first found by Lifshitz and Khalatnikov in 1960, is generalized to the case of a two-fluid cosmological model. This solution describes non-decreasing modes of adiabatic and isocurvature scalar perturbations and gravitational waves in the regime when deviations of a space-time metric from the homogeneous isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) background are large while locally measurable quantities like Riemann tensor …
Careful analysis of parametrized variational principles in mechanics and field theory leads to a generalization of Einstein theory that includes a cosmological stress tensor. This generalization also follows by restricting variations of the metric in the Hilbert action to spacetime diffeomorphisms. The equation of motion for the generalized theory is the twice-contracted Bianchi identity while the field equations constitute the stress tensor of the theory. Gravity is interpreted as a cosmological fluid.
We present a covariant formalism for studying nonlinear perturbations of scalar fields. In particular, we consider the case of two scalar fields and introduce the notion of adiabatic and isocurvature covectors. We obtain differential equations governing the evolution of these two covectors, as well as the evolution equation for the covector associated with the curvature perturbation. The form of these equations is very close to the analogous equations obtained in the linear theory, but our equations are fully nonlinear and exact. As an application of our formalism, we expand these equations at…
We study the possibility that cosmological density perturbations are generated by the inhomogeneous decay of right-handed neutrinos. This will occur if a scalar field whose fluctuations are created during inflation is coupled to the neutrino sector. Robust predictions of the model are a detectable level of non-Gaussianity and, if standard leptogenesis is the source of the baryon asymmetry, a baryon isocurvature perturbations at the level of the present experimental constraints.
Causal seed models, such as cosmological defects, generically predict a distinctly different structure to the CMB power spectrum than inflation, due to the behavior of the perturbations outside the horizon. We provide a general analysis of their causal generation from isocurvature initial conditions by analyzing the role of stress perturbations and conservation laws in the causal evolution. Causal stress perturbations tend to generate an isocurvature pattern of peak heights in the CMB spectrum and shift the first compression, i.e.~main peak, to smaller angular scales than in the inflationary c…
This PhD thesis presents a study of the effect and generation of non-adiabatic perturbations in Cosmology. We study adiabatic (curvature) and entropy (isocurvature) perturbations produced during a period of cosmological inflation that is driven by multiple scalar fields with an arbitrary interaction potential. A local rotation in field space is performed to separate out the adiabatic and entropy modes. The resulting field equations show explicitly how on large scales entropy perturbations can source adiabatic perturbations if the background solution follows a curved trajectory in field space, …
