Fragmentation functions are determined for the pion, kaon, and proton by analyzing charged-hadron production data in electron-positron annihilation. It is important that uncertainties of the determined fragmentation functions are estimated in this analysis. Analysis results indicate that gluon and light-quark functions have large uncertainties especially at small Q^2. We find that next-to-leading-order (NLO) uncertainties are significantly reduced in comparison with leading-order (LO) ones in the pion and kaon. The fragmentation functions are very different in various analysis groups. However, all the recent functions are roughly within the estimated uncertainties, which indicates that they are consistent with each other. We provide a code for calculating the fragmentation functions and their uncertainties at a given kinematical point of z and Q^2 by a user.
Fragmentation functions and their uncertainties are determined for pion, kaon, and proton by a global $χ^2$ analysis of charged-hadron production data in electron-positron annihilation and by the Hessian method for error estimation. It is especially important that the uncertainties of the fragmentation functions are estimated in this analysis. The results indicate that the fragmentation functions, especially gluon and light-quark fragmentation functions, have large uncertainties at small $Q^2$. There are large differences between widely-used functions by KKP (Kniehl, Kramer, and Pötter) and Kr…
Fragmentation functions are determined for pions, kaons, and nucleons by a global analysis of charged-hadron production data in electron-positron annihilation. The optimum functions are obtained in both leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) of alpha_s. It is important that uncertainties of the fragmentation functions are estimated in this work by the Hessian method. We found that the uncertainties are large at small Q^2 and that they are generally reduced in the NLO in comparison with the LO ones. We supply a code for calculating the fragmentation functions and their uncertainties…
Fragmentation functions of pion, kaon, and nucleon are determined by global analyses of hadron-production data in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. It is particularly important that uncertainties of the fragmentation functions are estimated for the first time. We found that light-quark and gluon fragmentation functions have large uncertainties, so that one should be careful in using these functions for hadron-production processes in heavy-ion collisions and lepton scattering. The analysis is extended to possible exotic hadron search by fragmentation functions. We found that internal structure of $f_0 (98…
New fragmentation functions (FFs) are extracted from a NLO QCD fit to the preliminary COMPASS data on pion and kaon multiplicities. It is shown that the new kaon FFs are very different from those of De Florian at al. (DSS) and Hirai et al. (HKNS). The sensitivity of the extracted polarized PDFs to the new FFs is discussed.
We discuss studies on determination of fragmentation functions and an application to exotic-hadron search by using characteristic differences between favored and disfavored functions. The optimum fragmentation functions are determined for pion, kaon, and proton in the leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) of the running coupling constant alpha_s by global analyses of hadron-production data in electron-positron annihilation. Various parametrization results are much different in disfavored-quark and gluon fragmentation functions; however, we show that they are within uncertainties o…
A summary of measurements of the fragmentation of charm quarks into a specific hadron is given. Measurements performed in photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering in $e^{\pm}p$, $pp$ and $e^+e^-$ collisions are compared, using up-to-date branching ratios. Within uncertainties, all measurements agree, supporting the hypothesis that fragmentation is independent of the specific production process. Averages of the fragmentation fractions over all measurements are presented. The average has significantly reduced uncertainties compared to individual measurements.
The QCD coupling alpha_s is determined at NLO*+NMLLA accuracy from the comparison of experimental jet data to theoretical predictions of the energy-evolution of the parton-to-hadron fragmentation function moments (multiplicity, peak, width, skewness) at low fractional hadron momentum z. From the existing e+e- and e-p jet data, we obtain alpha_s(m_Z^2) = 0.1195 +/- 0.0021 (exp.) {+0.0015}_{-0.0} (scale) at the Z mass. The uncertainties of the extracted alpha_s value are discussed.
We present a detailed assessment of uncertainties in parton-to-pion and parton-to-kaon fragmentation functions obtained in recent global QCD analyses of single-inclusive hadron production data at next-to-leading order accuracy. We use the robust Lagrange multiplier approach for determining uncertainties to validate the applicability of the simpler but approximate Hessian method. Extensive comparisons of the results obtained within both methods are presented for the individual parton-to-pion and kaon fragmentation functions. We provide Hessian eigenvector sets of pion and kaon fragmentation fun…
We present NNFF1.0, a new determination of the fragmentation functions (FFs) of charged pions, charged kaons, and protons/antiprotons from an analysis of single-inclusive hadron production data in electron-positron annihilation. This determination, performed at leading, next-to-leading, and next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD, is based on the NNPDF methodology, a fitting framework designed to provide a statistically sound representation of FF uncertainties and to minimise any procedural bias. We discuss novel aspects of the methodology used in this analysis, namely an optimised p…
A NLO QCD analysis of the HERMES and COMPASS data on pion multiplicities is presented. Sets of pion fragmentation functions are extracted from fits to the data and compared with those obtained from other groups before these data were available. The consistency between HERMES and COMPASS data is discussed. We point out a possible inconsistency between the HERMES [x, z] and [Q^2, z] presentations of their data.
We extract the pion fragmentation functions and their uncertainties from a judicious choice of e+e- and semi-inclusive DIS data. These are used to study the error propagation in the extraction of polarized parton densities from semi-inclusive DIS asymmetries. We conclude that the uncertainties on polarized PDs have been underestimated in the past.
We present new sets of pion and kaon fragmentation functions obtained in NLO combined analyses of single-inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation, proton-proton collisions, and deep-inelastic lepton-proton scattering with either pions or kaons identified in the final state. At variance with all previous fits, the present analyses take into account data where hadrons of different electrical charge are identified, which allow to discriminate quark from anti-quark fragmentation functions without the need of non trivial flavor symmetry assumptions. The resulting sets are in go…
In this paper, we present ${\tt SGK18}$ FFs, a first global QCD analysis of parton-to-{\it unidentified} charged hadrons fragmentation functions (FFs) at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy in perturbative QCD. This analysis is based on single-inclusive charged hadron production in electron-positron ($e^-e^+$) annihilation. The uncertainties in the extraction of ${\tt SGK18}$ FFs as well as the corresponding observables are estimated using the "Hessian" technique. We study the quality of the {\tt SGK18} FFs determined in this analysis by comparing with the recent results in literatur…
The current paper presents a determination of $K^0_S$ and $Λ/\barΛ$ fragmentation functions (FFs) from QCD analysis of single-inclusive electron-positron annihilation process (SIA). Our FFs determinations are performed at next-to-leading order (NLO), and for the first time, at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) which is designated as {\tt SAK20} FFs. Each of these FFs is accompanied by their uncertainties which are determined using the `Hessian' method. Considering the hadron mass corrections, we clearly investigate the reliability of ou…
In nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC, partons produced at high transverse momentum can undergo multiple scattering within the collision region prior to fragmenting into hadrons. We have studied the resulting medium-modified fragmentation function based on a calculation of the BDMPS-Z medium-induced gluon radiation for a dense, expanding medium of small finite extension. Here we explain how the BDMPS transport coefficient which measures the energy density attained in the collision, can be extracted from the observed modification of high-pt hadroproduction. We also comment on the signif…
We critically examine uncertainties in parton distribution functions (PDFs) at large x arising from nuclear effects in deuterium F2 structure function data. Within a global PDF analysis, we assess the impact on the PDFs from uncertainties in the deuteron wave function at short distances and nucleon off-shell effects, the use of relativistic kinematics, as well as the use of less a restrictive parametrization of the d/u ratio. We find that in particular the d-quark and gluon PDFs vary significantly with the choice of nuclear model. We highlight the impact of these uncertainties on the determina…
We present, for the first time, a set of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) fragmentation functions (FFs) describing the production of charmed-meson $D^{*+}$ from partons. Exploiting the universality and scaling violations of FFs, we extract the NLO and NNLO FFs through a global fit to all relevant data sets from single-inclusive $e^+e^-$ annihilation. The uncertainties for the resulting FFs as well as the corresponding observables are estimated using the Hessian approach. We evaluate the quality of the {\tt SKM18} FFs determined in this analysis by comparing with the recent results in liter…
It is proposed that fragmentation functions should be used to identify exotic hadrons. As an example, fragmentation functions of the scalar meson f_0(980) are investigated. It is pointed out that the second moments and functional forms of the u- and s-quark fragmentation functions can distinguish the tetraquark structure from $q\bar q$. By the global analysis of f_0 (980) production data in electron-positron annihilation, its fragmentation functions and their uncertainties are determined. It is found that the current available data are not sufficient to determine its internal structure, while …
We present preliminary results for an updated extraction of the transversity parton distribution based on the analysis of pion-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets in collinear factorization. Data for proton and deuteron targets by HERMES and COMPASS allow for a flavor separation of the valence components of transversity, while di-hadron fragmentation functions are taken from the semi-inclusive production of two pion pairs in back-to-back jets in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation. The latter data from Belle have been reanalyzed using the replica method and a mor…

We analyze the uncertainties induced by different definitions of the momentum fraction $z$ in the application of gluon to heavy quarkonium fragmentation function. We numerically calculate the initial $g \to J / ψ$ fragmentation functions by using the non-covariant definitions of $z$ with finite gluon momentum and find that these fragmentation functions have strong dependence on the gluon momentum $\vec{k}$. As $| \vec{k} | \to \infty$, these fragmentation functions approach to the fragmentation function in the light-cone definition. Our numerical results show that large uncertainties remains w…
We present a quantitative assessment of the impact a future Electron-Ion Collider would have in the determination of parton distribution functions in the proton and parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions through semi-inclusive deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering data. Specifically, we estimate the kinematic configurations for which the forthcoming data are expected to have the most significant impact in the precision of these distributions, computing the respective correlation and sensitivity coefficients. Implementing the reweighting technique over sets of simulated data with realisti…
The main aim of this paper is to present new sets of non-perturbative fragmentation functions (FFs) for $D^0$ and $D^+$ mesons at next-to-leading (NLO) and, for the first time, at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ factorization scheme with five massless quark flavors. This new determination of FFs is based on the QCD fit to the {\tt OPAL} experimental data for hadron production in the electron-positron single-inclusive annihilation (SIA). We discuss in detail the novel aspects of the methodology used in our analysis and the validity of obtained FFs by compari…
We perform the first iterative Monte Carlo (IMC) analysis of fragmentation functions constrained by all available data from single-inclusive $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into pions and kaons. The IMC method eliminates potential bias in traditional analyses based on single fits introduced by fixing parameters not well contrained by the data and provides a statistically rigorous determination of uncertainties. Our analysis reveals specific features of fragmentation functions using the new IMC methodology and those obtained from previous analyses, especially for light quarks and for strange quark fragm…
We present a novel global QCD analysis of charged $D^{*}$-meson fragmentation functions at next-to-leading order accuracy. This is achieved by making use of the available data for single-inclusive $D^{*}$-meson production in electron-positron annihilation, hadron-hadron collisions, and, for the first time, in-jet fragmentation in proton-proton scattering. It is shown how to include all relevant processes efficiently and without approximations within the Mellin moment technique, specifically for the in-jet fragmentation cross section. The presented technical framework is generic and can be stra…
In this paper a new comprehensive analysis of parton-to-pion fragmentation functions (FFs) is performed for the first time by including all experimental data sets on single inclusive pion as well as unidentified light charged hadron production in electron-positron ($e^+e^-$) annihilation. We determine the pion FFs along with their uncertainties using the standard "Hessian" technique at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) in perturabative QCD. It is shown that the determination of pion FFs using simultaneously the data sets from pion and unidentified light charg…
We study the Monte Carlo uncertainties due to modeling of hadronization and showering in the extraction of the top-quark mass from observables that use exclusive hadronic final states in top decays, such as $t \rightarrow \text{anything+J/}ψ$ or $t\rightarrow \text{anything}+(B\rightarrow \text{charged tracks})$, where $B$ is a $B$-hadron. To this end, we investigate the sensitivity of the top-quark mass, determined by means of a few observables already proposed in the literature as well as some new proposals, to the relevant parameters of event generators, such as HERWIG 6 and PYTHIA 8. We fi…
We present a new determination of unpolarised charged pion and kaon fragmentation functions from a set of single-inclusive electron-positron annihilation and lepton-nucleon semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering data. The determination includes next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to both processes, and is carried out in a framework that combines a neural-network parametrisation of fragmentation functions with a Monte Carlo representation of their uncertainties. We discuss the quality of the determination, in particular its dependence on higher order corrections.
We revisit the description of pion production in proton-proton collisions in the light of the very precise data taken at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) over the past decade. First attempts to include LHC results in next-to-leading order global QCD analyses of parton-to-pion fragmentation functions insinuated some conflict between data sets at different center-of-mass system energies. We show that the data can be well described within their uncertainties by a consistent set of pion fragmentation functions once the theoretical scale dependence is taken into account in the global QCD analysis.
A new analysis of the modification of the hadronization process in the nuclear medium for pions is presented. The effective description is condensed in a set of medium modified fragmentation functions (nFFs) obtained at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy. The study was made using the open-source tool xFitter, conveniently modified to incorporate semi-inclusive processes. Theoretical uncertainties for the nFFs are also provided.
We present new sets of fragmentation functions for protons and inclusive charged hadrons obtained in combined NLO QCD analyses of single-inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation, proton-proton collisions, and deep-inelastic lepton-proton scattering. These analyses complement previous results for pion and kaon fragmentation functions with charge and flavor discrimination. The Lagrange multiplier technique is used to assess the uncertainties in the extraction of the new sets of fragmentation functions.
We present a new, comprehensive global analysis of parton-to-pion fragmentation functions at next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD. The obtained results are based on the latest experimental information on single-inclusive pion production in electron-positron annihilation, lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions. An excellent description of all data sets is achieved, and the remaining uncertainties in parton-to-pion fragmentation functions are estimated based on the Hessian method. Extensive comparisons to the results from our previous global analysis are performe…
Fragmentation functions for eta mesons are extracted at next-to-leading order accuracy of QCD in a global analysis of data taken in electron-positron annihilation and proton-proton scattering experiments. The obtained parametrization is in good agreement with all data sets analyzed and can be utilized, for instance, in future studies of double-spin asymmetries for single-inclusive eta production. The Lagrange multiplier technique is used to estimate the uncertainties of the fragmentation functions and to assess the role of the different data sets in constraining them.
We revisit the global QCD analysis of parton-to-kaon fragmentation functions at next-to-leading order accuracy using the latest experimental information on single-inclusive kaon production in electron-positron annihilation, lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions. An excellent description of all data sets is achieved, and the remaining uncertainties in parton-to-kaon fragmentation functions are estimated and discussed based on the Hessian method. Extensive comparisons to the results from our previous global analysis are made.
We use a recently proposed non-perturbative model, based on an effective strong coupling constant and free from tunable parameters, to study c-flavoured hadron production in e+e- annihilation. Charm-quark production is described in the framework of perturbative fragmentation functions, with NLO coefficient functions, NLL non-singlet DGLAP evolution and NNLL large-x resummation. We model hadronization effects by means of the effective coupling constant in the NNLO approximation and compare our results with experimental data taken at the Z0 pole and at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We find that, wi…
We present a first analysis of parton-to-pion fragmentation functions at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD based on single-inclusive pion production in electron-positron annihilation. Special emphasis is put on the technical details necessary to perform the QCD scale evolution and cross section calculation in Mellin moment space. We demonstrate how the description of the data and the theoretical uncertainties are improved when next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections are included.
The inclusive spectra of charged particles measured at high transverse momenta ($p_T\gtrsim$2GeV/c) in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions in the range of center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=200-7000$GeV are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations using seven recent sets of parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions (FFs). Accounting for the uncertainties in the scale choices and in the parton distribution functions, we find that most of the theoretical predictions tend to overpredict the measured LHC and Tevatron cross sections by up to a factor of two. We ide…
We study the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) evolution of the Collins azimuthal asymmetries in $e^+e^-$ annihilations and semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes. All the relevant coefficients are calculated up to the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order accuracy. By applying the TMD evolution at the approximate NLL order in the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism, we extract transversity distributions for $u$ and $d$ quarks and Collins fragmentation functions from current experimental data by a global analysis of the Collins asymmetries in back…
We present NNFF1.1h, a new determination of unidentified charged-hadron fragmentation functions (FFs) and their uncertainties. Experimental measurements of transverse-momentum distributions for charged-hadron production in proton-(anti)proton collisions at the Tevatron and at the LHC are used to constrain a set of FFs originally determined from electron-positron annihilation data. Our analysis is performed at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. We find that the hadron-collider data is consistent with the electron-positron data and that it significantly constrains the …
By means of two different parametrizations of quark energy loss and the nuclear parton distributions determined only with lepton-nuclear deep inelastic scattering experimental data, a leading order phenomenological analysis is performed on the nuclear Drell-Yan differential cross section ratios as a function of the quark momentum fraction in the beam proton and target nuclei for E772 experimental data. It is shown that there is the quark energy loss effect in nuclear Drell-Yan process apart from the nuclear effects on the parton distribution as in deep inelastic scattering. The uncertainties d…
Nuclear modification factors of single hadrons and dihadrons at large transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are studied in a next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative QCD parton model. Parton fragmentation functions (FFs) in $A+A$ collisions are modified due to jet energy loss which is proportional to the jet transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ characterizing the interaction between the parton jet and the produced medium. By confronting 6 current sets of NLO parton FFs for large $p_{\rm T}$ hadron productions, we extract $\hat{q}$ quantitatively via a global fit to d…
We present MAPFF1.0, a determination of unpolarised charged-pion fragmentation functions (FFs) from a set of single-inclusive $e^+e^-$ annihilation and lepton-nucleon semi-inclusive deep-inelastic-scattering (SIDIS) data. FFs are parametrised in terms of a neural network (NN) and fitted to data exploiting the knowledge of the analytic derivative of the NN itself w.r.t. its free parameters. Uncertainties on the FFs are determined by means of the Monte Carlo sampling method properly accounting for all sources of experimental uncertainties, including that of parton distribution functions. Theoret…
We present a detailed phenomenological analysis of single-inclusive hadron production at the CERN-LHC in both proton-proton and proton-lead collisions. First data from the LHC experiments on charged hadron spectra are compared to next-to-leading order QCD expectations, and predictions are made for identified pion, kaon, and proton distributions differential in transverse momentum and rapidity for LHC energies from 900 GeV to 14 TeV. The results are obtained with the latest sets of vacuum fragmentation functions based on global QCD analyses, and recently proposed medium modified fragmentation f…
We present a detailed analysis of the use of heavy quark fragmentation into heavy hadrons for testing the heavy quark effective theory through comparison of the measured fragmentation parameters of the $c$ and $b$ quarks. Our analysis is entirely model independent. We interpret the known perturbative evolution in a way useful for exploiting heavy quark symmetry at low energy. We first show consistency with perturbative QCD scaling for measurements done solely with $c$ quarks. We then apply the perturbative analysis and the heavy quark expansion to relate measurements from ARGUS and LEP. We pla…
We describe B-hadron production in e+e- annihilation at the Z pole by means of a model including non-perturbative corrections to b-quark fragmentation as originating, via multiple soft emissions, from an effective QCD coupling constant, which does not exhibit the Landau pole any longer and includes absorbitive effects due to parton branching. We work in the framework of perturbative fragmentation functions at NLO, with NLL DGLAP evolution and NNLL large-x resummation in both coefficient function and initial condition of the perturbative fragmentation function. We include hadronization correcti…
We present the first open-source analysis of fragmentation functions (FFs) of charged pions (entitled IPM-xFitter) computed at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy in perturbative QCD using the xFitter framework. This study incorporates a comprehensive and up-to-date set of pion production data from single-inclusive annihilation (SIA) processes, as well as the most recent measurements of inclusive cross-sections of single pion by the BELLE collaboration. The determination of pion FFs along with their theoretical uncertainties is performed in the Zero-Ma…
