We propose a Curvature Principle to describe the dynamics of interacting universes in a multi-universe scenario and show, in the context of a simplified model, how interaction drives the cosmological constant of one of the universes toward a vanishingly small value. We also conjecture on how the proposed Curvature Principle suggests a solution for the entropy paradox of a universe where the cosmological constant vanishes.
We deduce general expressions for the line element of universe models with negative and vanishing spatial curvature described by conformally flat spacetime coordinates. The empty Milne universe model and models with dust, radiation and vacuum energy are exhibited. Discussing the existence of particle horizons we show that there is continual creation of space, matter and energy when conformal time is used in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models with negative spatial curvature.
We deduce general expressions for the line element of universe models with positive spatial curvature described by conformally flat spacetime coordinates. Models with dust, radiation and vacuum energy are exhibited. Discussing the existence of particle horizons we show that there is continual annihilation of space, matter and energy in a dust and radiation dominated universe, and continual creation in a LIVE domined universe when conformal time is used in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models with positive spatial curvature. A general procedure is given for finding coordinates to be used in Penros…
A sequence of Constant-Mean-Curvature(CMC) slices in the Swiss-Cheese(SC) Universe is investigated. We focus on the CMC slices which smoothly connect to the homogeneous time slices in the Einstein-de Sitter region in the SC universe. It is shown that the slices do not pass through the black hole region but white hole region.

We study the scalar curvature of spacelike hypersurfaces in the family of cosmological models known as generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes, and give several rigidity results under appropriate mathematical and physical assumptions. On the other hand, we show that this family of spacetimes provides suitable models obeying the null convergence condition to explain accelerated expanding universes.
We construct a FLRW universe considering an anisotropic scaling between space and time at extremely high and low energies only. In this context, Friedmann equations contain an additional term arising from spatial curvature which implements nonsingular bounces in the early Universe. The matter content of the model is a nonrelativistic pressureless perfect fluid and radiation. By breaking covariance diffeomorphism also at extreme large scales, an additional term furnishes late-time acceleration due to spatial curvature so that a cosmological constant is not needed. In order to probe the final fa…
We explore Noether gauge symmetries of FRW and Bianchi I universe models for perfect fluid in scalar-tensor gravity with extra term $R^{-1}$ as curvature correction. Noether symmetry approach can be used to fix the form of coupling function $ω(ϕ)$ and the field potential $V(ϕ)$. It is shown that for both models, the Noether symmetries, the gauge function as well as the conserved quantity, i.e., the integral of motion exist for the respective point like Lagrangians. We determine the form of coupling function as well as the field potential in each case. Finally, we investigate solutions through …
If the spatial curvature of the universe is positive, then the curvature term will always dominate at early enough times in a slow-rolling inflationary epoch. This enhances inflationary effects and hence puts limits on the possible number of e-foldings that can have occurred, independently of what happened before inflation began and in particular without regard for what may have happened in the Planck era. We use a simple multi-stage model to examine this limit as a function of the present density parameter $Ω_0$ and the epoch when inflation ends.
We investigate the accelerated expansion of the late-time universe in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric with nonzero curvature, applying a holographic principle based on a generalized holographic dark energy model introduced by Nojiri and Odintsov (2005,2006). We describe the evolution of the universe using a generalized equation of state in the presence of a viscous fluid. Solutions of the gravitational equation of motions are obtained in explicit form for a constant value of the thermodynamic parameter, and for various forms of the bulk viscosity. We calculate analytic expressions for in…
Here, cosmology of the late and future universe is obtained from $f(R)$-gravity with non-linear curvature terms $R^2$ and $R^3$ ($R$ being the Ricci scalar curvature). It is different from $f(R)$-dark enrgy models, where non-linear curvature terms are taken as gravitational alternative of dark energy. In the present model, neither linear nor no-linear curvature terms are taken as dark energy. Rather, dark energy terms are induced by curvature terms in the Friedmann equation derived from $f(R)$-gravitational equations. It has advantage over $f(R)$- dark energy models in the sense that the prese…
We consider Bianchi VI spacetime, which also can be reduced to Bianchi types VI0-V-III-I. We initially consider the most general form of the energy-momentum tensor which yields anisotropic stress and heat flow. We then derive an energy-momentum tensor that couples with the spatial curvature in a way so as to cancel out the terms that arise due to the spatial curvature in the evolution equations of the Einstein field equations. We obtain exact solutions for the universes indefinetly expanding with constant mean deceleration parameter. The solutions are beriefly discussed for each Bianchi type. …
We propose a modified form of the spontaneous birth of the universe by quantum tunneling. It proceeds through topology change and inflation, to eventually become a universe with closed spatial sections of negative curvature and nontrivial global topology.
We study a closed model of the universe filled with viscous fluid and quintessence matter components in a Brans-Dicke type cosmological model. The dynamical equations imply that the universe may look like an accelerated flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe at low redshift. We consider here dissipative processes which follow a causal thermodynamics. The theory is applied to viscous fluid inflation, where accepted values for the total entropy in the observable universe is obtained.
The curvature parameter tension between Planck 2018, cosmic microwave background lensing, and baryon acoustic oscillation data is measured using the suspiciousness statistic to be 2.5 to 3$σ$. Conclusions regarding the spatial curvature of the universe which stem from the combination of these data should therefore be viewed with suspicion. Without CMB lensing or BAO, Planck 2018 has a moderate preference for closed universes, with Bayesian betting odds of over 50:1 against a flat universe, and over 2000:1 against an open universe.
In the paper, we apply the weak gravity conjecture to the holographic quintessence model of dark energy. Three different holographic dark energy models are considered: without the interaction in the non-flat universe; with interaction in the flat universe; with interaction in the non-flat universe. We find that only in the models with the spatial curvature and interaction term proportional to the energy density of matter, it is possible for the weak gravity conjecture to be satisfied.
Nowadays, according to the observational evidences the curvature parameter of the universe is neglected and spatially flat FLRW model is on the top of interest for cosmologists. However, due to some discrepancies between $Λ$-CDM model anticipations and observations, one may think out the curvature parameter as the solution even though it may be very small. So, in this article we investigate the eras in which the curvature influence was or is more significant. In addition, a geometrical interpretation of Hubble parameter is dedicated. We find that the Hubble parameter is more appropriate to be …
We investigated the cosmology in a higher-curvature gravity where the dimensionality of spacetime gives rise to only quantitative difference, contrary to Einstein gravity. We found exponential type solutions for flat isotropic and homogeneous vacuum universe for the case in which the higher-curvature term in the Lagrangian density is quadratic in the scalar curvature, $ξR^2$. The solutions are classified according to the sign of the cosmological constant, $Λ$, and the magnitude of $Λξ$. For these solutions 3-dimensional space has a specific feature in that the solutions are independent of the …
We suggest that the "Big Bang" may be a result of the first-order phase transition driven by changing scalar curvature of the 4D space-time in expanding cold Universe, filled with nonlinear scalar field $ϕ$ and neutral matter with equation of state $p=ν\varepsilon $ (where $p$ and $\varepsilon $ are pressure and energy density of matter). We consider a Lagrangian for scalar field in curved space-time with nonlinearity $ϕ^{4} $, which along with the quadratic term $-ξR\left|ϕ\right|^{2} $ (where $ξ$ is the interaction constant and $R$ is scalar curvature) contains a term $\sim ξR\left(ϕ+ϕ^{+} \…
The question of whether the universe is eternal or if it had a singular moment of creation is deeply intriguing. Although different versions of steady state and oscillatory models of eternal universe have been envisaged, empirical evidence suggests a singular moment of creation at the big bang. Here we analyze the oscillatory solutions for the universe in a modified theory of gravity THED (Torsion Hides Extra-Dimension) and evaluate them by fitting Type 1a supernovae redshift data. THED-gravity exactly mimics General Relativity at the kinematical level, while the modifications in its dynamical…
We study the cosmological models in which an extended Chaplygin gas universe is merged with the braneworld scenario. In particular, we examine the realization of Einstein static universe on the brane embedded in a non-constant curvature bulk space and perform a detailed perturbation analysis. We extract the stability conditions and find their impacts on the geometric equation of state parameter and the spatial curvature of the universe.
We show that in the case of positively-curved Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre universes $(k=+1)$, an inflationary period in the early universe will for most initial conditions not solve the horizon problem, no matter how long inflation lasts. It will only do so for cases where inflation starts in an almost static state, corresponding to an extremely high value of $Ω_Λ$, $Ω_Λ \gg 1$, at the beginning of inflation. For smaller values, it is not possible to solve the horizon problem because the relevant integral asymptotes to a finite value (as happens also in the de Sitter universe in a $k=+1$ frame). Thus…
We study how the initial inhomogeneities of the spatial curvature affect the onset of inflation in the closed universe. We consider a cosmological model which contains a radiation and a cosmological constant. In order to treat the inhomogeneities in the closed universe, we improve the long wavelength approximation such that the non-small spatial curvature is tractable in the lowest order. Using the improved scheme, we show how large inhomogeneities of the spatial curvature prevent the occurrence of inflation.
Penrose conjectured a connection between entropy and Weyl curvature of the Universe. This is plausible, as the almost homogeneous and isotropic Universe at the onset of structure formation has negligible Weyl curvature, which then grows (relative to the Ricci curvature) due to the formation of large-scale structure and thus reminds us of the second law of thermodynamics. We study two scalar measures to quantify the deviations from a homogeneous and isotropic space-time, the relative information entropy and a Weyl tensor invariant, and show their relation to the averaging problem. We calculate …
The evolution of a universe with Brans-Dicke gravity and nonzero curvature is investigated here. We present the equations of motion and their solutions during the radiation dominated era. In a Friedman-Robertson-Walker cosmology we show explicitly that the three possible values of curvature $κ=+1,0,-1$ divide the evolution of the Brans-Dicke universe into dynamically distinct classes just as for the standard model. Subsequently we discuss the flatness problem which exists in Brans-Dicke gravity as it does in the standard model. In addition, we demonstrate a flatness problem in MAD Brans-Dicke …
A simple perturbation description unique for all signs of curvature, and based on the gauge-invariant formalisms is proposed to demonstrate that: (1) The density perturbations propagate in the flat radiation-dominated universe in exactly the same way as electromagnetic or gravitational waves propagate in the epoch of the matter domination. (2) In the open universe, sounds are dispersed by curvature. The space curvature defines the minimal frequency $ω_{\rm c}$ below which the propagation of perturbations is forbidden. Gaussian acoustic fields are considered and the curvature imprint in the per…
In this paper, we study the effects of Generalized Uncertainty Principle(GUP) and Modified Dispersion Relations(MDRs) on the thermodynamics of ultra-relativistic particles in early universe. We show that limitations imposed by GUP and particle horizon on the measurement processes, lead to certain modifications of early universe thermodynamics.
We discuss the modified gravity which may produce the current cosmic aceleration of the universe and eliminates the need for dark energy. It is shown that such models where the action quickly grows with the decrease of the curvature define the FRW universe with the minimal curvature. It is required the infinite time to reach the minimal curvature during the universe evolution. It is demonstrated that quantum effects of conformal fields may strongly suppress the instabilities discovered in modified gravity. We also briefly speculate on the modification of gravity combined with the presence of t…
We present a physics model for a time-symmetric Milne-like universe. The model is based on the $q$-theory approach to the cosmological constant problem, supplemented by an assumed vacuum-matter energy exchange possibly due to quantum-dissipative effects. Without fine-tuning of the initial vacuum energy density, we obtain a harmless big bang singularity (with finite values of the Ricci and Kretschmann curvature scalars) and attractor behavior towards Minkowski spacetime. The time-symmetric spacetime manifold of our model may provide the proper setting for a possible CPT-symmetric universe.
In this article we investigate dependency of the adiabatic and entropy spectral indices of the cosmological perturbations on the geometry and topology of the background universe. Our discussion includes the post-inflationary universe i.e. radiation-dust mixture era. For this purpose, we first extract an explicit equation describing evolution of the comoving curvature perturbation in the FLRW universe with arbitrary spatial sectional curvature. We may percept when $K\neq 0$, curvature scale would be as significant as the perturbations scales to recognize the behavior of the spectral indices. We…
We consider interacting holographic dark energy model in Friedmann Robertson Walker space time with positive spatial curvature and investigate the behavior of curvature parameter and dark energy density in accelerated expanding epoch. We also derive some conditions needed to cross the phantom divide line in this model.
The curvature of a spacetime, either in a topological sense, or averaged over super-horizon-sized patches, is often equated with the global curvature term that appears in Friedmann's equation. In general, however, the Universe is inhomogeneous, and gravity is a nonlinear theory, thus any curvature perturbations violate the assumptions of the FLRW model; it is not necessarily true that local curvature, averaged over patches of constant-time surfaces, will reproduce the observational effects of global symmetry. Further, the curvature of a constant-time hypersurface is not an observable quantity,…
In the present model, a unified picture of cosmology from early inflation to late acceleration is obtained from $ f(R)-$ gravity with non-linear terms $ R^2 $ and $ R^5 $ of scalar curvature $R$. It is discussed that elementary particles and radiation are produced during early inflation. The emitted radiation thermalizes the universe to a very high temperature $ \sim 10^{18}{\rm GeV}$. The exit of the universe from inflationary phase is followed by deceleration due to radiation-dominance heralding the standard cosmology with background radiation having the initial temperature $ \sim 10^{18}{\r…
We study the possibility to probe the spatial geometry of the Universe by supernova measurement of the cubic correction to the luminosity distance. We illustrate with an accelerating universe model with infinite-volume extra dimensions, for which the 1$σ$ level supernova results indicate that the Universe is closed.
We investigate exact solutions and the asymptotic dynamics for the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker universe with nonzero spatial curvature in the fourth-order modified teleparallel gravitational theory known as $f\left( T, B\right) $ theory. We show that the field equations admit a minisuperspace description, and they can reproduce any exact form of the scale factor. Moreover, we calculate the equilibrium points and analyze their stability. We show that Milne and Milne-like solutions are supported, and the de Sitter universe is provided. To complete our analysis, we use Poincaré variable…
We present a model of an inhomogeneous universe that leads to accelerated expansion after taking spatial averaging. The model universe is the Tolman-Bondi solution of the Einstein equation and contains both a region with positive spatial curvature and a region with negative spatial curvature. We find that after the region with positive spatial curvature begins to re-collapse, the deceleration parameter of the spatially averaged universe becomes negative and the averaged universe starts accelerated expansion. We also discuss the generality of the condition for accelerated expansion of the spati…
I explain the geometric basis for the recently-discovered nonholonomic mapping principle which permits deriving laws of nature in spacetimes with curvature and torsion from those in flat spacetime, thus replacing and extending Einstein's equivalence principle. As an important consequence, it yields a new action principle for determining the equation of motion of a free spinless point particle in such spacetimes. Surprisingly, this equation contains a torsion force, although the action involves only the metric. This force makes trajectories autoparallel rather than geodesic. Its geometric origi…
It is well known that observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are highly sensitive to the spatial curvature of the Universe, k. Here we find that what is in fact being tightly constrained by small angle fluctuations is spatial curvature near the surface of last scattering, and that if we allow k to be a function of position, rather than taking a constant value everywhere, then considerable spatial curvature is permissible within our own locale. This result is of interest for the giant void models that attempt to explain the supernovae observations without Dark Energy. We find voi…
As evidenced by a great number of works, it is common practice to assume that the Universe is flat. However, the majority of studies which make use of observational data to constrain the curvature density parameter are premised on the $Λ$CDM cosmology, or extensions thereof. On the other hand, fitting the data to models with a time-varying dark energy equation of state can, in some cases, accommodate a non-flat Universe. Several authors caution that if the assumption of spatial flatness is wrong, it could veer any efforts to construct a dark energy model completely off course, even if the curv…
Model-independent constraints on the spatial curvature are not only closely related to important problems such as the evolution of the Universe and properties of dark energy, but also provide a test of the validity of the fundamental Copernican principle. In this paper, with the distance sum rule in the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric, we achieve model-independent measurements of the spatial curvature from the latest type Ia supernovae and strong gravitational lensing (SGL) observations. We find that a spatially closed Universe is preferred. Moreover, by considering different kinds …
Modeling of matter bounce in $f(R,T)$ gravity has been presented with no violation of the null energy condition. Only a closed universe with negative pressure is allowed in good agreement with some recent observations which favor a universe with positive curvature. Our results agree with some recent works in which a combination of positive curvature and vacuum energy leads to non-singular bounces with no violation of the null energy condition. The stability of the model has been discussed. The cosmographic parameters are developed for the derived model to explain the accelerated expansion of t…
Chiral phase transitions driven by space-time curvature effects are investigated in de Sitter space in the supersymmetric Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with soft supersymmetry breaking. The model is considered to be suitable for the analysis of possible phase transitions in inflationary universe. It is found that a restoration of the broken chiral symmetry takes place in two patterns for increasing curvature : the first order and second order phase transition respectively depending on initial settings of the four-body interaction parameter and the soft supersymmetry breaking parameter. The critical…
We discuss the effect of curvature and matter inhomogeneities on the averaged scalar curvature of the present-day Universe. Motivated by studies of averaged inhomogeneous cosmologies, we contemplate on the question whether it is sensible to assume that curvature averages out on some scale of homogeneity, as implied by the standard concordance model of cosmology, or whether the averaged scalar curvature can be largely negative today, as required for an explanation of Dark Energy from inhomogeneities. We confront both conjectures with a detailed analysis of the kinematical backreaction term and …
As is well known, the exact evolution equation of the curvature perturbation plays a very important role in investigation of the inflation power spectrum of the flat universe. However, its corresponding exact extension for the non-flat universes has not yet been given out clearly. The interest in the non-flat, specially closed, universes is being aroused recently. The need of this extension is pressing. We start with most elementary physical consideration and obtain finally this exact evolution equation of the curvature perturbation for the non-flat universes, as well as the evolutionary contr…
The paper 0705.0332v1 seeks to study the effect of non-trivial spatial curvature in homogeneous and isotropic models. We note that the space considered is not homogeneous, and that the equations of motion used are inconsistent with the metric. Also, we explain why the spatial curvature of homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes always evolves like 1/a^2, contrary to the central assumption of 0705.0332v1.
We discuss the advantages of using metric theories of gravity with curvature-matter couplings in order to construct a relativistic generalisation of the simplest version of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), where Tully-Fisher scalings are valid for a wide variety of astrophysical objects. We show that these proposals are valid at the weakest perturbation order for trajectories of massive and massless particles (photons). These constructions can be divided into local and non-local metric theories of gravity with curvature-matter couplings. Using the simplest two local constructions in a FLRW …
We show that the current accelerated expansion of the Universe can be explained without resorting to dark energy. Models of generalized modified gravity, with inverse powers of the curvature can have late time accelerating attractors without conflicting with solar system experiments. We have solved the Friedman equations for the full dynamical range of the evolution of the Universe. This allows us to perform a detailed analysis of Supernovae data in the context of such models that results in an excellent fit. Hence, inverse curvature gravity models represent an example of phenomenologically vi…
Probing the geometry of the universe is one of the most important endevours in cosmology. Current observational data from the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy (CMB), galaxy surveys and type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) strongly constrain the curvature of the universe to be close to zero for a universe dominated by a cosmological constant or dark energy with a constant equation of state. Here we investigate the role of cosmic priors on deriving these tight bounds on geometry, by considering a landscape motivated scenario with an oscillating curvature term. We perform a likelihood analysis of cu…
Casimir-Polder interaction arises from the vacuum fluctuations of quantum field that depend on spacetime curvature and thus is spacetime-dependent. Here we show how to use the resonance Casimir-Polder interaction (RCPI) between two entangled atoms to detect spacetime curvature. We find that the RCPI of two static entangled atoms in the de Sitter-invariant vacuum depends on the de Sitter spacetime curvature relevant to the temperature felt by the static observer. It is characterized by a $1/L^2$ power law decay when beyond a characteristic length scale associated to the breakdown of a local ine…
Within the cosmic screening approach, we obtain the exact formulas for the velocity-independent gravitational potentials produced by matter in the form of discrete sources distributed in the open and closed Universes. These formulas demonstrate that spatial curvature of the Universe considerably affect the form of the potentials and forces. While in the open Universe the gravitational force undergoes exponential suppression at cosmological distances, in the closed Universe the force induced by an individual mass is equal to zero at the antipodal point with respect to this mass. The derived for…
The flatness of an accelerating universe model (characterized by a dark energy scalar field $χ$) is mimicked from a curved model that is filled with, apart from the cold dark matter component, a quintessencelike scalar field $Q$. In this process, we characterize the original scalar potential $V(Q)$ and the mimicked scalar potential $V(χ)$ associated to the scalar fields $Q$ and $χ$, respectively. The parameters of the original model are fixed through the mimicked quantities that we relate to the present astronomical data, such that the equation state parameter $w_{_χ}$ and the dark energy dens…
The Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological models are based on the assumptions of large-scale homogeneity and isotropy of the distribution of matter and energy. They are usually taken to have spatial sections that are simply connected; they have finite volume in the positive curvature case, and infinite volume in the null and negative curvature ones. I want to call the attention to the existence of an infinite number of models, which are based on these same metrics, but have compact, finite volume, multiply connected spatial sections. Some observational implications are briefly…
Mach Principle presents the absolute universe. For example, when Einstein stood on the ground and relaxed, his arms fell down naturally. However, if he rotated his body then his arms were lifted up as the rotation was faster and faster. Mach principle is that the matter of the whole universe can affect local dynamic systems. That is, the matter of the whole universe sets up the local absolute reference frames. However, Einstein's general theory of relativity is against the absolute reference frames of Mach Principle.
We study cosmological solutions for the very early universe beginning at the Planck scale for a universe containing radiation, curvature and, as a simplification of a possible scalar field potential, a cosmological constant term. The solutions are the natural counterpart of the well known results for a post-inflationary universe of non-relativistic matter, curvature and a cosmological constant. Contrary to the common belief that inflation arises independently of the initial curvature we show that in the positive curvature case the universe collapses again into a Big Crunch without allowing the…
