In the framework of the effective field theory method, we use the experimental data and the perturbative unitarity bounds to determine the values and uncertainty of all the 11 chiral coefficients ($\al_i, i=0, ..., 10$) of the standard electroweak chiral Lagrangian. Up to linear terms in $\al_i$, we provide the one-loop renormalization group equations of all the chiral coefficients, which are calculated in the Feynman-'t Hooft gauge using the modified minimal subtraction scheme. With the improved renormalization group equations to sum over the logarithmic corrections, we analyze the current experimental uncertainty of oblique correction parameters, $S(Λ)$ and $T(Λ)$. We find that, due to the large uncertainty in the triple gauge-boson coupling measurements, the parameter space of positive $S(Λ)$ for $Λ> 1$ TeV is still allowed by the current experimental data. $T(Λ)$ tends to increase with $Λ$ even in the presence of the operators that contribute to the triple and quartic gauge-boson couplings.
We match the electroweak chiral Lagrangian with two singlet scalars to the next-to-minimal composite Higgs model with $ SO(6)/SO(5) $ coset structure and extract the scalar divergences to one loop. Assuming the additional scalar to be heavy, we integrate it out and perform a matching to the well-established electroweak chiral Lagrangian with one light Higgs.
The framework of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian with a light Higgs is extended by an additional scalar and then generalized to N scalars in the Higgs sector. Divergences from scalar fluctuations are renormalized up to one loop using the background field method. The results are crosschecked against the case of one scalar. A subset of the divergences is demonstrated and crosschecked diagrammatically. Together with the complete one-loop renormalization of the electroweak chiral theory with one light Higgs conducted previously, this constitutes a renormalization framework of any pure scalar ext…
As a first step towards the construction of a general electroweak effective Lagrangian incorporating heavy states, we present here a simplified version where only vector and axial-vector spin-1 triplets are involved. We adopt an effective field theory formalism, implementing the electroweak chiral symmetry breaking SU(2)L x SU(2)R -> SU(2)L+R, which couples the heavy states to the SM fields. At low energies, the heavy degrees of freedom are integrated out from the action and their effects are hidden in the low-energy couplings of the Electroweak Effective Theory, which can be tested experiment…
Starting from the one-loop divergences we obtained previously, we work out the renormalization of the Higgs-Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian explicitly and in detail. This includes the renormalization of the lowest-order Lagrangian, as well as the decomposition of the remaining divergences into a complete basis of next-to-leading-order counterterms. We provide the list of the corresponding beta functions. We show how our results match the one-loop renormalization of some of the dimension-6 operators in SMEFT. We further point out differences with related work in the literature and discuss them. A…
The Standard Model of fundamental interactions, albeit an incredibly elegant and successful theory, lacks explanations for some experimental and theoretical open questions. Interestingly, many of these problems seem to be related to the electroweak symmetry breaking sector of the theory, whose dynamical generation is still unknown. Important questions such as what is the true nature of the Higgs boson, why is its mass so light and so close to that of the electroweak gauge bosons or whether the properties of this particle are the ones predicted in the Standard Model remain unanswered. The LHC i…
The electroweak sector of the Standard Model can be formulated in a way similar to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT), but extended by a singlet scalar. The resulting effective field theory (EFT) is called Higgs-Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian (EWCh$\mathcal{L}$) and is the most general approach to new physics in the Higgs sector. It solely assumes the pattern of symmetry breaking leading to the three electroweak Goldstone bosons (i.e. massive $W$ and $Z$) and the existence of a Higgs-like scalar particle. The power counting of the EWCh$\mathcal{L}$ is given by a generalization of the momentum ex…
Chiral Lagrangian mesonic fields can be connected to QCD quark operators via matrix operators containing scale factors. These scale factor matrices are shown to be constrained by chiral symmetry, resulting in a universal scale factor for each Chiral Lagrangian nonet. QCD sum-rules, combined with mixing angles from Chiral Lagrangian analyses, are used to determine the scale factors for the $a_0$ isotriplet and $K_0^*$ isodoublet scalar mesons. The resulting scale factors verify the universality property, providing a validation of the scale factor matrices connecting Chiral Lagrangian mesonic fi…
