A colloidal system of spheres interacting with both a deep and narrow attractive potential and a shallow long-ranged barrier exhibits a prepeak in the static structure factor. This peak can be related to an additional mesoscopic length scale of clusters and/or voids in the system. Simulation studies of this system have revealed that it vitrifies upon increasing the attraction into a gel-like solid at intermediate densities. The dynamics at the mesoscopic length scale corresponding to the prepeak represents the slowest mode in the system. Using mode coupling theory with all input directly taken from simulations, we reveal the mechanism for glassy arrest in the system at 40% packing fraction. The effects of the low-q peak and of polydispersity are considered in detail. We demonstrate that the local formation of physical bonds is the process whose slowing down causes arrest.
It remains largely unaffected by the large-scale heterogeneities, and sets the clock for the slow cluster mode. Results from mode-coupling theory without adjustable parameters agree semi-quantitatively with the local density correlators but overestimate the lifetime of the mesoscopic structure (voids).
We investigate the dependence of the stickiness parameters $t_{ij}=1/(12τ_{ij})$ -- where the $τ_{ij}$ are the conventional Baxter parameters -- on the solute diameters $σ_{i}$ and $σ_{j}$ in multicomponent sticky hard sphere (SHS) models for fluid mixtures of mesoscopic neutral particles. A variety of simple but realistic interaction potentials, utilized in the literature to model \textit{short-ranged attractions} present in real solutions of colloids or reverse micelles, is reviewed. We consider: i) van der Waals attractions, ii) hard-sphere-depletion forces, iii) polymer-coated colloids, iv…
In this work, we analyzed an isotropic colloidal model incorporating both short-range sticky attractions and long-range electrostatic repulsions. We computed the zero-shear viscosity and second virial coefficient for a dilute colloidal suspension (i.e., pair interactions only) as a function of the strength of attractions and repulsions. We also developed an analytical approximation that allows us to better understand the coupling of the two types of interactions. The attractions and repulsions contribute to the zero-shear viscosity and second virial coefficient in different ways, leading to ca…
We investigate the influence of geometric confinement on the free energy of an idealized model for charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions. The mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann formulation for this system predicts pure repulsion among macroionic colloidal spheres. Fluctuations in the simple ions' distribution provide a mechanism for the macroions to attract each other at large separations. Although this Casimir interaction is long-ranged, it is too weak to influence colloidal crystals' dynamics.
Systems in which a short-ranged attraction and long-ranged repulsion compete are intrinsically frustrated, leading their structure and dynamics to be dominated either by mesoscopic order or by metastable disorder. Here we report the latter case in a colloidal system with long-ranged electrostatic repulsions and short-ranged depletion attractions. We find a variety of states exhibiting slow non-diffusive dynamics: a gel, a glassy state of clusters, and a state reminiscent of a Wigner glass. Varying the interactions, we find a continuous crossover between the Wigner and cluster glassy states, an…
In this work we derive and analyze coarse-grained descriptions of self-propelled particles with selective attraction-repulsion interaction, where individuals may respond differently to their neighbours depending on their relative state of motion (approach versus movement away). Based on the formulation of a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation, we derive a kinetic description of the system dynamics in terms of equations for the Fourier modes of a one-particle density function. This approach allows effective numerical investigation of the stability of possible solutions of the system. The detailed …
We study gelation in suspensions of model colloidal particles with short-ranged attractive and long-ranged repulsive interactions by means of three-dimensional fluorescence confocal microscopy. At low packing fractions, particles form stable equilibrium clusters. Upon increasing the packing fraction the clusters grow in size and become increasingly anisotropic until finally associating into a fully connected network at gelation. We find a surprising order in the gel structure. Analysis of spatial and orientational correlations reveals that the gel is composed of dense chains of particles const…
We study a model in which particles interact with short-ranged attractive and long-ranged repulsive interactions, in an attempt to model the equilibrium cluster phase recently discovered in sterically stabilized colloidal systems in the presence of depletion interactions. At low packing fraction particles form stable equilibrium clusters which act as building blocks of a cluster fluid. We study the possibility that cluster fluids generate a low-density disordered arrested phase, a gel, via a glass transition driven by the repulsive interaction. In this model the gel formation is formally descr…
Understanding the correlation between structure and rheology in colloidal suspensions is important as these suspensions are crucial in industrial applications. Moreover, colloids exhibit a wide range of structures under confinement that could considerably alter the viscosity. Here, we use a combination of experiments and simulations to elucidate how confinement induced structures alter the relative contributions of hydrodynamic and repulsive forces to produce up to a ten fold change in the viscosity. We use a custom built confocal rheoscope to image the particle configurations of a colloidal s…
Within the mode-coupling theory for the evolution of structural relaxation, the A_4 glass-transition singularities are identified for systems of particles interacting with a hard-sphere repulsion complemented by different short-ranged potentials: Baxter's singular potential regularized by a large-wave-vector cutoff, a model for the Asakura-Oosawa depletion attraction, a triangular potential, a Yukawa attraction, and a square-well potential. The regular potentials yield critical packing fractions, critical Debye-Waller factors and critical amplitudes very close to each other. The elastic moduli…
We study metastable clusters in a colloidal system with competing interactions. A short-ranged polymer-induced attraction drives clustering, while a weak, long-ranged electrostatic repulsion prevents extensive aggregation. We compare experimental yields of cluster structures expected from theory, which assumes simple addition of the competing isotropic interactions. For clusters of size $4\leq m\leq6$, the yield is significantly less than that expected. We attribute this to an anisotropic self-organized surface charge distribution linked to the cluster symmetry: non-additivity of electrostatic…
Using computer simulations, we study the dynamic arrest in a schematic model of colloid-polymer mixtures combining short-ranged attractions with long-ranged repulsions. The arrested gel is a dilute rigid network of colloidal particles bonded due to the strong attractions. Without repulsions, the gel forms at the spinodal through arrested phase separation. In the ergodic suspension at sufficiently high densities, colloidal clusters form temporary networks that percolate space. Recently [Nat. Commun. 7, 11817 (2016)], it has been proposed that the transition of these networks to directed percola…
We present results from microscopic mode coupling theory generalized to colloidal dispersions under shear in an integration-through-transients formalism. Stress-strain curves in start-up shear, flow curves, and normal stresses are calculated with the equilibrium static structure factor as only input. Hard spheres close to their glass transition are considered, as are hard spheres with a short-ranged square-well attraction at their attraction dominated glass transition. The consequences of steric packing and physical bond formation on the linear elastic response, the stress release during yield…
We study the structure of clusters in a model colloidal system with competing interactions using Brownian dynamics simulations. A short-ranged attraction drives clustering, while a weak, long-ranged repulsion is used to model electrostatic charging in experimental systems. The former is treated with a short-ranged Morse attractive interaction, the latter with a repulsive Yukawa interaction. We consider the yield of clusters of specific structure as a function of the strength of the interactions, for clusters with m=3,4,5,6,7,10 and 13 colloids. At sufficient strengths of the attractive interac…
We model the stabilization of clusters and lattices of cuboidal particles with long-ranged magnetic dipolar and short-ranged surface interactions. Two realistic systems were considered: one with magnetization orientated in the [001] crystallographic direction, and the other with magnetization along the [111] direction. We have studied magnetic nanocubes clusters first in the limit of $T=0$~K intending to elucidate the structural genesis of low energy configurations and then analyzed finite-temperature behavior of the same systems in simulations. Our results demonstrate that dipolar coupling ca…
The dynamics of sedimenting particles under gravity are surprisingly complex due to the presence of effective long-ranged forces. When the particles are polar with a well-defined symmetry axis and non-uniform density, recent theoretical predictions suggest that prolate objects will repel and oblate ones will weakly attract. We tested these predictions using mass polar proalte spheroids, which are composed of 2 mm spheres glued together. We probed different aspect rations ($κ$) and center of mass offsets ($χ$) by combining spheres of different densities. Experiments were done in both quasi-two-…
We consider a theoretical model for a binary mixture of colloidal particles and spherical emulsion droplets. The hard sphere colloids interact via additional short-ranged attraction and long-ranged repulsion. The droplet-colloid interaction is an attractive well at the droplet surface, which induces the Pickering effect. The droplet-droplet interaction is a hard-core interaction. The droplets shrink in time, which models the evaporation of the dispersed (oil) phase, and we use Monte Carlo simulations for the dynamics. In the experiments, polystyrene particles were assembled using toluene dropl…
The competition of depletion attractions and longer-ranged repulsions between colloidal particles in colloid-polymer mixtures leads to the formation of heterogeneous gel-like structures. For instance, gel networks, i.e., states where the colloids arrange in thin strands that span the whole system occur at low packing fractions for attractions that are stronger than those at the binodal line of equilibrium liquid-fluid phase separation. By using Brownian dynamics simulations we explore the formation, structure, and ageing dynamics of gel networks. We determine reduced network that focus on the …
We theoretically study the polarizability and the interactions of neutral complexes consisting of a semi-flexible polyelectrolyte adsorbed onto an oppositely charged spherical colloid. In the systems we studied, the bending energy of the chain is small compared to the Coulomb energy and the chains are always adsorbed on the colloid. We observe that the polarizability is large for short chains and small electrical fields and shows a non-monotonic behavior with the chain length at fixed charge density. The polarizability has a maximum for a chain length equal to half of the circumference of the …
