We have performed spatially resolved Polar Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect Microscopy measurements on as-grown and annealed Ga0.95Mn0.05As thin films with tensile strain. We find that the films exhibit very strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy which is increased upon annealing. During magnetic reversal, the domain walls propagate along the direction of surface ripples for the as-grown sample at low temperatures and along the [110] direction for the annealed sample. This indicates that the magnetic domain pattern during reversal is determined by a combination of magnetocrystalline anisotropy and a distribution of pinning sites along the surface ripples that can be altered by annealing. These mechanisms could lead to an effective method of controlling domain wall propagation.
Biaxial strain effects on electronic structures and thermoelectric properties of monolayer $\mathrm{PtTe_2}$ are investigated by using generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for the electron part and GGA for the phonon part. Calculated results show that small compressive strain (about -3\%) can induce semiconductor-to-metal transition, which can easily be achieved in experiment. The conduction bands convergence is observed for unstrained $\mathrm{PtTe_2}$, which can be removed by both compressive and tensile strains. Tensile strain can give rise to valence band…
The stability of germanene under biaxial tensile strain and the accompanying modifications of the electronic properties are studied by density functional theory. The phonon spectrum shows that up to $16\%$ strain the germanene lattice is stable, where the Dirac cone shifts towards higher energy and hole-doped Dirac states are achieved. The latter is due to weakening of the Ge-Ge bonds and reduction of the s-p hybridization. Our calculated Grüneisen parameter shows a similar dependence on the strain as reported for silicene (which is different from that of graphene).
Effect of biaxial tensile strains on optical functions and band edge transitions of ultra thin epitaxial films was studied using as an example a 13 nm thick SrTiO3 films deposited on KTaO3(100) single-crystal substrates. Optical functions were determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry technique. It was found that tensile strains result in a shift of the low energy band gap optical transitions to higher energies and decrease the refractive index in the visible region. Comparison of the optical spectra for strained SrTiO3 films and for homoepitaxial strain-free SrTiO3:Cr (0.01 %at.) films deposit…
Epitaxial CaMnO3 films grown with 2.3% tensile strain on (001)-oriented LaAlO3 substrates are found to be incipiently ferroelectric below 25 K. Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) was used for the detection of the incipient polarization. The SHG analysis reveals that CaMnO3 crystallites with in-plane orientation of the orthorhombic b axis contribute to an electric polarization oriented along the orthorhombic a (resp.\ c) axis in agreement with the predictions from density functional calculations.
Uniaxial tensile properties of hexagonal boron nitride nanoribbons and dependence of these properties on temperature, strain rate, and the inclusion of vacancy defects have been explored with molecular dynamics simulations using Tersoff potential. The ultimate tensile strength of pristine hexagonal boron nitride nanoribbon of 26 nm x 5 nm with armchair chirality is found to be 100.5 GPa. The ultimate tensile strength and strain have been found decreasing with increasing the temperature while an opposite trend has been observed for increasing the strain rate. Furthermore, the vacancy defects re…
Very recently there was a report of the discovery using piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) of a switchable ferroelectric polarization in 1.6 % tensile strained TiO2 thin film with anatase crystal structure (see N. Deepak et al. Adv. Funct. Mater. 2014, 24, 2844). The polarization disappeared only above 450 K, which was assigned as a Curie temperature, Tc. Here we have performed X-ray diffraction, second-harmonic generation (SHG) and infrared investigations of the same films. Phonon frequencies exhibit less than a 10 % shift down with the tensile strain and no anomaly near expected TC. SHG ex…
We investigate the effect of epitaxial strain on the electrocaloric effect (ECE) in BaTiO$_3$ by means of ab initio based molecular dynamics simulations. We show that tensile strain can be used to optimize the operation range for ferroic cooling. Strain in the range of $\leq 1$ % can be used to shift the operation temperature by several hundreds of Kelvin both to higher and lower temperatures, depending on the direction of the external field. In addition, the transformation between multi-domain and mono-domain states, induced by an in-plane electric field, results in an additional peak of the …
By performing first-principles calculations, we systematically explore the effect of epitaxial strain on the structure and properties of multiferroic TbMnO3. We show that, although the unstrained bulk TbMnO3 displays a non-collinear antiferromagnetic spin order, TbMnO3 can be ferromagnetic under compressive strain, in agreement with the experimental results on TbMnO3 grown on SrTiO3. By increasing the tensile strain up to 5%, we predict that TbMnO3 transforms into a new multiferroic state with a large ferroelectric polarization, two orders of magnitude larger than that in the unstrained bulk, a…
The onset of sub-critical crack growth during slow strain rate tensile testing (SSRT) is assessed through a combined experimental and modeling approach. A systematic comparison of the extent of intergranular fracture and expected hydrogen ingress suggests that hydrogen diffusion alone is insufficient to explain the intergranular fracture depths observed after SSRT experiments in a Ni-Cu superalloy. Simulations of these experiments using a new phase field formulation indicate that crack initiation occurs as low as 40% of the time to failure. The implications of such sub-critical crack growth on…
We investigated the effect of the tensile strain on the spin splitting at the n-type interface in LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ in terms of the spin-orbit coupling coefficient $α$ and spin texture in the momentum space using first-principles calculations. We found that the $α$ could be controlled by the tensile strain and be enhanced up to 5 times for the tensile strain of 7%, and the effect of the tensile strain leads to a persistent spin helix, which has a long spin lifetime. These results support that the strain effect on LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ is important for various applications such as spinFET and s…
The extremely stringent requirement on material quality has hindered the investigation and potential applications of exotic chiral magnetic effect in Dirac semimetals. Here, we propose that gray tin is a perfect candidate for observing the chiral anomaly effect and Shubnikov-de-Haas (SdH) oscillation at relatively low magnetic field. Based on effective $k.p$ analysis and first-principles calculations, we discover that gray tin becomes a Dirac semimetal under tensile uniaxial strain, in contrast to a topological insulator under compressive uniaxial strain as known before. In this newly found Di…
Tensile stress-strain behavior of Ni57.5Mn22.5Ga20.0 single crystal exhibiting a high-temperature 2M-martensitic phase stable up to 360\degree C has been studied in the course of thermal and mechanical cycling. The ultra-large reversible strains, about 9%, caused by the shape memory and superelasticity effects, have been observed up to 400 \degree C being the instrumental temperature limit. Abnormally large two-way shape memory effect with 9% of strain magnitude has been found. The cycling procedure and the variation of thermal/mechanical routs of the training of samples revealed the destabili…
We have studied the mechanical properties and phonon dispersions of fully hydrogenated borophene (borophane) under strains by first principles calculations. Uniaxial tensile strains along the a- and b-direction, respectively, and biaxial tensile strain have been considered. Our results show that the mechanical properties and phonon stability of borophane are both highly anisotropic. The ultimate tensile strain along the a-direction is only 0.12, but it can be as large as 0.30 along the b-direction. Compared to borophene and other 2D materials (graphene, graphane, silicene, silicane, h-BN, phos…
We conduct dislocation dynamics (DD) simulations of Fe periodic single crystals under tensile load at several high strain rates and temperatures. The simulations are enabled by the recent development of temperature-dependent dislocation mobility relations obtained from atomistic calculations. The plastic evolution in the simulations is governed by rapid initial dislocation multiplication, followed by a saturation of the flow stress when the subpopulation of slow plastic carriers becomes stabilized by dislocation annihilation. Above 500 K, edge dislocations coexist with screw dislocations and c…
We present a theoretical analysis of recent experimental measurements of magnetoresistance in (Ga,Mn)As epilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The model reproduces the field-antisymmetric anomalies observed in the longitudinal magnetoresistance in the planar geometry (magnetic field in the epilayer plane and parallel to the current density), as well as the unusual shape of the accompanying transverse magnetoresistance. The magnetoresistance characteristics are attributed to circulating currents created by the presence of magnetic domain walls.
Two-dimensional (2D) magnetoelectric multiferroics are promising multifunctional materials for miniaturized logic and memory devices. Herein, we explore the effectiveness of strain-engineering for tuning the properties of a recently predicted 2D antiferromagnetic-ferroelectric, VOCl2 monolayer. Interestingly, we find that magnetic-ordering and electric polarization can be tuned independently using uniaxial tensile strain along different in-plane lattice vectors. A 4% tensile strain along lattice vector b induces a transition from an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state with an out-of-plane mag…
We show that a ferromagnetic (FM) order in the orthorhombic CaRuO3, which is a non-magnetic and iso-structural analog of FM system SrRuO3, can be established and stabilized by the means of tensile epitaxial strain. Investigations on the structural and magnetic property correlations in the CaRuO3 films with different degrees of strain reveal that the FM moment increases with increasing the tensile strain. This is an experimental verification to the theoretical predictions of scaling of the tensile epitaxial strain and the magnetic order in this system. Our studies further establish that the ten…
Diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMSs) based on group-IV materials are desirable for spintronic devices compatible with current silicon technology. In this work, amorphous Mn-doped SiGe thin films were first fabricated on Ge substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering and then crystallized by rapid thermal annealing (RTA). After the RTA, the samples became ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductors, in which the Curie temperature increased with increasing Mn doping concentration and reached 280 K with 5% Mn concentration. The data suggest that the ferromagnetism came from the hole-mediated proce…
The longitudinal and transverse resistivities of differently strained (Ga,Mn)As layers are theoretically and experimentally studied as a function of the magnetization orientation. The strain in the series of (Ga,Mn)As layers is gradually varied from compressive to tensile using (In,Ga)As templates with different In concentrations. Analytical expressions for the resistivities are derived from a series expansion of the resistivity tensor with respect to the direction cosines of the magnetization. In order to quantitatively model the experimental data, terms up to the fourth order have to be incl…
In this work, we report on the mechanical responses and fracture behavior of pristine and defected monolayer 1T-Titanium Disulfide using classical molecular dynamics simulation. We investigated the effect of temperature, strain rate and defect ratio on the uniaxial tensile properties in both armchair and zigzag direction. We found that monolayer TiS2 shows isotropic uniaxial tensile properties except for failure strain which is greater in zigzag direction than armchair direction. We also observed a negative correlation of ultimate tensile strength, failure strain and young's modulus with tempe…
The nucleation of cavities in a homogenous polymer under tensile strain is investigated in a coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation. In order to establish a causal relation between local microstructure and the onset of cavitation, a detailed analysis of some local properties is presented. In contrast to common assumptions, the nucleation of a cavity is neither correlated to a local loss of density nor, to the stress at the atomic scale and nor to the chain ends density in the undeformed state. Instead, a cavity in glassy polymers nucleates in regions that display a low bulk elastic modul…
Various two-dimensional (2D) materials with graphene-like buckled structure emerge, and the $β$-phase AsP monolayer has been recently proposed to be thermodynamically stable from first-principles calculations. The studies of thermal transport are very useful for these 2D materials-based nano-electronics devices. Motivated by this, a comparative study of strain-dependent phonon transport of AsP monolayer is performed by solving the linearized phonon Boltzmann equation within the single-mode relaxation time approximation (RTA). It is found that the lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_L$) of AsP mon…
Strain engineering provides an effective way of tailoring the electronic and optoelectronic properties of semiconductor nanomaterials and nanodevices, giving rise to novel functionalities. Here, we present direct experimental evidence of strain-induced modifications of hole mobility in individual GaAs nanowires, using in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The conductivity of the nanowires varied with applied uniaxial tensile stress, showing an initial decrease of ~5-20% up to a stress of 1~ 2 GPa, subsequently increasing up to the elastic limit of the nanowires. This is attributed to…
Thin films of PbTiO3, a classical ferroelectric, have been grown under tensile strain on single-crystal substrates of DyScO3. The films, of only 5nm thickness, grow fully coherent with the substrate and show no crystallographic twin domains, as evidenced by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. A mapping of the reciprocal space reveals intensity modulations (satellites) due to regularly-spaced polar domains in which the polarization appears rotated away from the substrate normal, characterizing a low symmetry phase not observed in the bulk material. This could have important practical implications si…
Strain heterogeneity at the microstructural level plays a vital role in the deformation and fracture behaviour of dual or multi-phase materials. In the present work, the strain heterogeneity, localization and partitioning arising at the sub-micron scale during elevated temperature (170 °C) tensile deformation of an Mg-5Al-3Ca alloy was investigated using quasi in-situ μ-DIC experiments. The results reveal that the strain is mainly carried by the α-Mg phase, while the intermetallic Laves phase plays a critical role in that strain concentrations build up at the α-Mg matrix and Laves phase interf…
An investigation of the mechanical, electronic, and optical properties of the recently reported material K4 phosphorus was made in this work. The K4 phosphorus has been proved to be mechanically and dynamically stable up to 7 GPa under hydrostatic pressure. We compared the elastic anisotropy, average acoustic velocity and Debye temperature of K4 phosphorus at 0 and 7 GPa. The ideal tensile at large strains of K4 phosphorus was also examined, with the results showing that it would cleave under the tensile strength of 8.5 GPa with the strain of 0.3. In addition, the effect of tensile strain and …
Germanium is a strong candidate as a laser source for silicon photonics. It is widely accepted that the band structure of germanium can be altered by tensile strain so as to reduce the energy difference between its direct and indirect band gaps. However, the conventional deformation potential model most widely adopted to describe this transformation happens to have been investigated only up to 1 % uniaxially loaded strains. In this work, we use a micro-bridge geometry to uniaxially stress germanium along [100] up to $\varepsilon_{100}$=3.3 % longitudinal strain and then perform electro-absorpt…
Martensitic transformation induced by cooling NiTi wire under various tensile stresses: martensite variant microstructure, textures, recoverable strains and plastic strains
Crystal and domain structures of tensile-strained BiFeO3 films grown on orthorhombic (110)o PrScO3 substrates were investigated. All films possess a MB-type monoclinic structure with 109o stripe domains oriented along the [ī10]o direction. For films thicknesses less than ~40 nm, presence of well-ordered domains is proved by the detection of satellite peaks in synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies. For thicker films, For thicker films, only the Bragg reflections from tilted domains were detected. This is attributed to the broader domain size distribution in thicker films.Using planar electrodes…
Quasi-brittle materials endowed with (statistically) self-similar hierarcical microstructures show distinct failure patterns that deviate from the standard scenario of damage accumulation followed by crack nucleation-and-growth. Here we study the failure of paper sheets with hierarchical slice patterns as well as non-hierarchical and unpatterned reference samples, considering both uncracked samples and samples containing a macroscopic crack. Failure is studied under displacement-controlled tensile loading as well as under creep conditions. Acoustic emission records and surface strain patterns …
This paper examines the effect of temperature on the structural stability and mechanical properties of 20 layered (10,10) single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) under tensile loading using an O(N) tight binding molecular dynamics (TBMD) simulation method. We observed that (10,10) tube can sustain its structural stability for the strain values of 0.23 in elongation and 0.06 in compression at 300K. Bond breaking strain value decreases with increasing temperature under streching but not under compression. The elastic limit, Young's modulus, tensile strength and Poisson ratio are calculated as 0.…
The effects of biaxial tensile strain on the structure, electronic states, and mechanical properties of silicene are studied by ab-initio calculations. Our results show that up to 5% strain the Dirac cone remains essentially at the Fermi level, while higher strain induces hole doping because of weakening of the Si$-$Si bonds. We demonstrate that the silicene lattice is stable up to 17% strain. It is noted that the buckling first decreases with the strain (up to 10%) and then increases again, which is accompanied by a band gap variation. We also calculate the Grüneisen parameter and demonstrate…
In the present study, an attempt has been made to understand the effect of different competing mechanisms controlling the overall degree of sensitization (DOS) of deformed austenitic stainless steel at the early stage of sensitization. The Double Loop Electrochemical Potentiokinetic Reactivation (DL-EPR) studies were performed to characterize the Degree of Sensitization (DOS) as functions of pre-defined strain and sensitization temperature. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to explain the phenomena qualitatively. A non monotonous behaviour in the variatio…
Quasi-two dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) exhibit dramatic properties that may transform electronic and photonic devices. We report on how the anomalously large magnetoresistance (MR) observed under high magnetic field in MoTe$_2$, a type II Weyl semimetal, can be reversibly controlled under tensile strain. The MR is enhanced by as much as ~ 30 % at low temperatures and high magnetic fields, when uniaxial strain is applied along the $a$-crystallographic direction and reduced by about the same amount when strain is applied along the $b$-direction. We show that the large in-pl…
Density functional study of strain effects on the electronic band structure and transport prop- erties of the graphene nanoribbons (GNR) is presented. We apply a uniaxial strain in the x (nearest-neighbor) and y (second nearest-neighbor) directions, related to the deformation of zigzag and armchair edge GNRs (AGNR and ZGNR), respectively. We calculate the quantum conduc- tance and band structures of the GNR using the Wannier function in a strain range from -8% to +8% (minus and plus signs show compression and tensile strain). As strain increases, depending on the AGNR family type, the electric…
We investigate the interaction of tin alloying with tensile strain and n-type doping for improving the performance of a Ge-based laser for on-chip optical interconnects. Using a modified tight-binding formalism that incorporates the effect of tin alloying on conduction band changes, we calculate how threshold current density and slope efficiency are affected by tin alloying in the presence of tensile strain and n-type doping. Our results show that while there exists a negative interaction between tin alloying and n-type doping, tensile strain can be effectively combined with tin alloying to dr…
We consider the case of a chiral soliton lattice subjected to uniaxial elastic strain applied perpendicular to the chiral axis and derive through analytical modelling the phase diagram of magnetic states supported in the presence of an external magnetic field. The strain induced anisotropies give rise to three distinct non-trivial spin textures, depending on the nature of the strain, and we show how these states may be identified by their signatures in Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Experimental TEM measurements of the Fresnel contrast in a strained sample of the prototypical …
Digital image correlation of laser-ablated platinum nanoparticles on the surface of a polycrystalline metal (nickel-based superalloy Rene 88DT) was used to obtain the local strain behavior from an in situ scanning electron microscope tensile experiment at room temperature. By fusing this information with crystallographic orientations from EBSD, a subsequent analysis shows that the average maximum shear strain tends to increase with increasing Schmid factor. Additionally, the range of the extreme values for the maximum shear strain also increases closer to the grain boundary, signifying that gr…
The circular polarization of direct gap emission of Ge is studied in optically-excited tensile-strained Ge-on-Si heterostructures as a function of doping and temperature. Owing to the spin-dependent optical selection rules, the radiative recombinations involving strain-split light (cG-LH) and heavy hole (cG-HH) bands are unambiguously resolved. The fundamental cG-LH transition is found to have a low temperature circular polarization degree of about 85% despite an off-resonance excitation of more than 300 meV. By photoluminescence (PL) measurements and tight binding calculations we show that th…
The mechanical response of embedded ABA trilayer graphene flakes loaded in tension and compression on polymer beams is monitored by simultaneous Raman measurements through the strain sensitivity of the G or 2D peaks. A characteristic peculiarity of the investigated flake is that it contains a trilayer and bilayer part. The Bernal stacked bilayer was used as a strain sensor aiming to assess the efficiency of the load transfer from the polymer matrix through shear to the individual graphene layers. For the trilayer graphene in tension, both peaks are redshifted and splitting of the G peak is rep…
KEK and NIMS have been jointly developing Nb3Al superconducting wire with a rapid heating and quenching (RHQ) method towards high field accelerator magnets in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) luminosity upgrade. A15-type superconductors such as Nb3Al and Nb3Sn exhibit strain dependence with respect to their critical currents. Therefore, a thorough understanding of strain behavior is necessary for high field accelerator magnet development, which will be critical for the luminosity upgrade of the LHC.
Recently, lattice dynamics of the highly strained europium monoxide, as a promising candidate for strong ferroelectric-ferromagnet material, applied in the next-generation storage devices, attracted huge attention in the solid-state electronics. Here, the authors investigate the effect of tensile strain on dielectric properties of pulsed laser deposited EuO thin films from 10 to 200 K. A nearly 3% out-of-plane lattice compression is observed as the film thickness was reduced to 8 nm, which could originate from the lattice mismatch between film and a LaAlO3 substrate. The temperature and freque…
Recently, Chi Xu et al. predicted the phase-filling singularities (PFS) in the optical dielectric function (ODF) of the highly doped $n$-type Ge and confirmed in experiment the PFS associated $E_{1}+Δ_{1}$ transition by advanced \textit{in situ} doping technology [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 267402 (2017)], but the strong overlap between $E_{1}$ and $E_{1}+Δ_{1}$ optical transitions made the PFS associated $E_{1}$ transition that occurs at the high doping concentration unobservable in their measurement. In this work, we investigate the PFS of the highly doped n-type Ge in the presence of the uniaxia…
Using first-principles calculations, the electronic and magnetic properties of orthorhombic BaFeO$_{3}$ (BFO) are investigated with local spin density approximation (LSDA). The calculations reveal that at the optimized lattice volume BFO has a lower energy in ferromagnetic state as compared with antiferromagnetic state. At the equilibrium volume, BFO shows metallic behavior, however, under a large tensile strain ($\sim25\%$), BFO shows half-metallic behavior consistent with the integer magnetic moment of $4.0μ_{\rm{B}}$/fu mainly caused by the $t_{2g}$ and $e_{g}$ electrons of Fe. Including a …
According to the classical theory of elasticity, a plate subjected to a bending moment always deflects with symmetric tensile and compressive strains in its two sides, without overall deformation perpendicular to the bending moment. Here, we find by ab initio simulations that significant overall tensile strain can be induced by pure bending in a wide range of two-dimensional crystals perpendicular to the bending moment, just like an accordion being bent to open. This accordion effect is raised by asymmetric response of chemical bonds and electron density to the bending curvature, with the tens…
First-principles calculations were carried out to investigate interfacial strain effects on spin injection and spin polarization of a magnetic tunnel junction consisting of half-metallic full-Heusler alloy Co2CrAl and ferroelectric perovskite NaNbO3. Spin-dependent coherent tunneling was calculated within the framework of non-equilibrium Green's function technique. Both spin polarization and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) are affected by the interfacial strain but their responses to compressive and tensile strains are different. Spin polarization across the interface is fully preserved under a…
By means of the first-principles calculations combined with the tight-binding approximation, the strain-induced semiconductor-semimetal transition in graphdiyne is discovered. It is shown that the band gap of graphdiyne increases from 0.47 eV to 1.39 eV with increasing the biaxial tensile strain, while the band gap decreases from 0.47 eV to nearly zero with increasing the uniaxial tensile strain, and Dirac cone-like electronic structures are observed. The uniaxial strain-induced changes of the electronic structures of graphdiyne come from the breaking of geometrical symmetry that lifts the deg…
The Order (N) Tight Binding Molecular Dynamics (TBMD) algorithms applied to simulate the tensile elongations of short (2-2.5 nm) armchair and zigzag Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs) without bond breakings or defect formation. Simulations are repeated at high temperatures. We fix the lower limit of breaking strains to short SWCNTs without bond breaking or 5-7 defects formation. At room temperature, the simulated (4,4) SWCNT is able to carry the strain up to 130% of the relaxed tube length without bond breaking or 5-7 defects formation. This value is 127% for (11,0) SWCNT, 125% for (17,0)…
Strain engineering is a very effective method to tune electronic, optical, topological and thermoelectric properties of materials. In this work, we systematically study biaxial strain dependence of electronic structures and thermoelectric properties (both electron and phonon parts) of monolayer $\mathrm{PtSe_2}$ with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for electron part and GGA for phonon part. Calculated results show that compressive or tensile strain can induce conduction band minimum (CBM) or valence band maximum (VBM) transition, which produces important…
A novel medium manganese steel named Novalloy with composition Fe-8.3Mn-3.8Al-1.8Si-0.5C-0.06V-0.05Sn was developed and thermomechanically processed through hot rolling and intercritical annealing. The steel possessed a yield strength of 1 GPa, tensile strength of 1.13 GPa and ductility of 41\%. In order to study the effect of cold rolling after intercritical annealing on subsequent tensile properties, the steel was further cold rolled up to 20\% reduction. After cold rolling, it was observed that the strain hardening rate increased continuously with increasing cold rolling reduction but witho…
With local density approximation + Hubbard $U$ (LDA+$U$) calculations, we show that the ferromagnetic (FM) insulating state observed in tensile-strained LaCoO$_3$ epitaxial thin films is most likely a mixture of low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) Co, namely, a HS/LS mixture state. Compared with other FM states, including the intermediate-spin (IS) state (\textit{metallic} within LDA+$U$), which consists of IS Co only, and the insulating IS/LS mixture state, the HS/LS state is the most favorable one. The FM order in HS/LS state is stabilized via the superexchange interactions between adjacent LS …
