In this paper we continue to pursue a goal of finding an effective theory for high energy interaction in QCD based on the colour dipole approach, for which the BFKL Pomeron Calculus gives a low energy limit. The key problem, that we try to solve in this paper is the probabilistic interpretation of the BFKL Pomeron Calculus in terms of the colourless dipoles and their interactions. We demonstrate that the BFKL Pomeron Calculus has two equivalent descriptions : (i) one is the generating functional which gives a clear probabilistic interpretation of the processes of high energy scattering and also provides a Hamiltonian-like description of the system of interacting dipoles; (ii) the second is the Langevin equation with a specific noise term which is rather complicated. We found that at high energies this Langevin equation can be reduced to the Langevin equation for directed percolation in the momentum space if the impact parameter is large, namely, $b>> 1/k$, where $k$ is the transverse momentum of a dipole. Unfortunately, this simplified form of Langevin equation is not applicable for summation of Pomeron loops, where one integrates over all possible values of impact parameter. We show that the BFKL Pomeron calculus with two vertices (splitting $P\to P+P$ and merging $P+P\to P$ of Pomerons) can be interpreted as a system of colourless dipoles with two processes: the decay of one dipole into two and the merging of two dipoles into one dipole. However, a number of assumptions we have to make on the way to simplify the noise term in the Langevin equation and/or to apply the probabilistic interpretation, therefore, we can consider both of these approaches in the present form only as the QCD motivated models.
In this paper we introduce the confinement into the kernel of the BFKL equation, assuming that the sizes of produced dipoles cannot be large. The goal of this paper is to find how this assumption, which leads to a correct exponential decrease of the amplitude at large impact parameters, affects the main properties of the BFKL Pomeron. We solve the equations for total cross section and $\ <| b^2 |\ >$ numerically and developed some methods of analytical solutions. The main result is that the modified BFKL Pomeron has the same intercept and $α'_\pom = 0$ as the BFKL Pomeron. It gives us a hope tha…
We investigate the coupling of the BFKL-Pomeron to quarks and to colorless states. Special emphasis is given to the effective quark-quark scattering amplitude of Mueller and Tang.
In this paper we continue to pursue a goal of finding the effective theory for high energy interaction in QCD based on the colour dipole approach, for which the BFKL Pomeron Calculus gives a low energy limit. The two key problems, that we consider are the following: the probabilistic interpretation of the BFKL Pomeron Calculus and the possible scenario for the asymptotic behaviour of the scattering amplitude at high energy in QCD. In this paper we show that the generating functional approach is equivalent to the BFKL Pomeron Calculus and leads to a clear interpretation of this calculus as an a…
In this paper the exact analytical solution is found for the BFKL Pomeron calculus in QCD, in which all Pomeron loops have been included. This solution manifests the geometrical scaling behaviour and matches with the solution to the linear evolution equation on the line $r^2= 1/Q^2_s(x)$, where $r$ is the dipole size and $Q_s$ is the saturation momentum.
We calculate inclusive dijet production cross section in high energy hadron collisions within the BFKL resummation formalism for the QCD Pomeron. We take into account the Pomerons which are adjacent to the hadrons. With these adjacent Pomerons we define a new object - the BFKL structure function of hadron - which enables one to calculate the inclusive dijet production for any rapidity intervals. We present predictions for the dijet K-factor and azimuthal angle decorrelation. Estimations for some NLO BFKL corrections are also given. (To appear in the Proceedings of the Workshop on Particle Theo…
In the framework of the dipole picture of the BFKL pomeron we discuss a few possibilities of calculating the total $γ^{\star}γ^{\star}$ cross section of the virtual photons. We argue that the existing successful fits of the dipole picture formulae to the measured structure functions $F_2(Q^2,x)$ favor one of the possible extensions of the dipole picture of the BFKL pomeron formulated recently by one of us.
The BFKL pomeron in perturbative QCD is plagued by the lack of unitarity and diffusion into the infra-red region of gluon virtualities. These two problems are intimately related. We perform numerical studies of the evolution equation proposed by Balitsky and Kovchegov which unitarizes the BFKL pomeron. We show how diffusion into the infra-red region is suppressed due to the emergence of a saturation scale and scaling behaviour. We study universality of this phenomenon as well as its dependence on subleading corrections to the BFKL pomeron such as the running coupling and kinematic constraint. …
In the present note we propose a shift of the anomalous dimension function of the eigenfunctions of the BFKL equation with the NLO running coupling corrections. The calculated eigenvalue of the modified equation turns out to be conformal invariant and we discuss consequences of this result.
In this paper we address two problems in the BFKL Pomeron calculus in zero transverse dimensions: the summation of the Pomeron loops and the calculation of the processes of multiparticle generation. We introduce a new generating functional for these processes and obtain the evolution equation for it. We argue that in the kinematic range given by $ 1 \ll \ln(1/\as^2) \ll \as Y \ll \frac{1}{\as}$, we can reduce the Pomeron calculus to exchange of non-interacting Pomerons with the renormalized amplitude of their interaction with the target. Therefore, the summation of the Pomeron loops can be per…
We calculate inclusive dijet production cross section in high energy hadron collisions within the BFKL resummation formalism for the QCD Pomeron. Unlike the previous calculations with the Pomeron developing only between tagging jets, we include also the Pomerons which are adjacent to the hadrons. With these adjacent Pomerons we define a new object --- the BFKL structure function of hadron --- which enables one to calculate the inclusive dijet production for any rapidity intervals. We present predictions for the K-factor and the azimuthal angle decorrelation in the inclusive dijet production fo…
Elastic production of vector mesons $γ^{*} N\to V N$ is the pomeron-exchange dominated diffractive reaction with much potential of probing the BFKL pomeron. The BFKL pomeron can conveniently be described in terms of the dipole cross section which is a solution of the generalized BFKL equation. In this paper we discuss, how the energy and $Q^{2}$ dependence of elastic production of vector mesons at HERA will allow scanning the dipole cross section as a function of dipole size $r$. We show that determinaton of the intercept of the BFKL pomeron requires measuring the $ρ^{0}$ and $J/Ψ$ production …
An estimate is derived for the absolute magnitude of BFKL pomeron exchange at $t=0$. The analysis takes account of energy conservation and of the need realistically to model nonperturbative contributions to the BFKL integral from infrared regions. Experiment finds that there is little or no room for a significant BFKL term in soft processes, and this constrains its magnitude in hard and semihard processes, so that it is unlikely to be detectable.
It is shown by numerical calculations that the convoluted QCD pomeron propagator in the external field created by a solution of the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation in the nuclear matter vanishes at high rapidities. This may open a possibility to apply the perturbative approach for the calculation of pomeron loops.
In this paper the action of the BFKL Pomeron calculus is re-written in momentum representation, and the equations of motion for nucleus-nucleus collisions are derived, in this representation. We found the semi-classical solutions to these equations, outside of the saturation domain. Inside this domain these equations reduce to the set of delay differential equations, and their asymptotic solutions are derived.
We show that in the case of the BFKL pomeron with running coupling the diffusion pattern is strongly modified and is characterised by the sudden tunneling transition to the non-perturbative regime. We suggest that by using the b - expansion method one can suppress the non-perturbative Pomeron and isolate purely perturbative part of the gluon Green's function.
We present a numerical estimate of the $γ^* γ^*$ total cross section at the designed 500 GeV $e^+e^-$ Linear Collider, based upon the BFKL Pomeron. We find that the event rate is substantial provided electrons scattered under small angles can be detected, and a measurement of this cross section provides an excellent test of the BFKL Pomeron.
We consider the absorptive corrections and the rapidity gap survival factor which are necessary to provide the unitarization of the BFKL Pomeron. In particular we discuss the role of the enhanced screening diagrams.
The goal of this paper is to sum over a class of enhanced diagrams, and derive a new Pomeron Green function. It is found that this sum gives the Pomeron contribution to the scattering amplitude that decreases with energy. In other words, we found that the total cross section of two colourless dipoles of small but equal sizes, falls down at high energies.
We discuss the significance of the next-to-leading order term in the BFKL equation on the energy dependence of diffractive processes controlled by the perturbative QCD pomeron. It is shown that whereas the large negative corrections do indeed reduce the rate of growth of diffractive amplitudes with increasing energy, this reduction is considerably less than previously expected.
The equation proposed by N.N.Nikolaev, B.G.Zakharov and V.R.Zoller for the colour dipole cross-section is compared with the BFKL equation for the hard pomeron for the $SU(2)$ colour group. It is demonstrated that for a fixed coupling constant the difference between the two equations is due to a different manner to introduce the gluon mass.
We present a numerical estimate of the $γ^* γ^*$ total cross section at LEP and at the designed $e^+e^-$ Next Linear Collider (NLC), based upon the BFKL Pomeron. We find for the linear collider that the event rate is substantial provided electrons scattered under small angles can be detected, and a measurement of this cross section provides an excellent test of the BFKL Pomeron. For LEP, although the number of events is substantially smaller, an initial study of this process is feasible.
We find one-loop correction to the integral kernel of the BFKL equation for the total cross section of the high energy scattering in QCD and calculate the next-to-leading contribution to anomalous dimensions of twist-2 operators near $j=1$.
We present a BFKL phenomenology of structure functions in the framework of the generalized BFKL equation for the dipole cross section proposed by us recently. We show that the HERA measurements of excitation of charm at $Q^{2} \lsim $10 GeV$^{2}$ allow determination of the intercept of the BFKL pomeron. A comparison with the experimental data suggests a large contribution from the nonperturbative cross section for colour dipoles of large size $r$.
We show that the next-to-leading-order renormalization-group-improved asymptotically-free BFKL Pomeron provides a good fit to HERA data on virtual photoproduction at small x and large Q^2. The leading discrete Pomeron pole reproduces qualitatively the Q^2 dependence of the HERA data for x ~10^{-3}, and a fit using the three leading discrete singularities reproduces quantitatively the Q^2 and x dependence of the HERA data for x < 10^{-2}. This fit fixes the phase for all the BFKL wavefunctions at a chosen infrared scale.
We study the high energy behaviour of elastic scattering amplitudes within the leading logarithm approximation. In particular, we cast the amplitude in a form which allows us to study the internal dynamics of the BFKL Pomeron for general momentum transfer. We demonstrate that the momentum transfer acts as an effective infrared cut-off which ensures that the dominant contribution arises from short distance physics.
In the framework of semihard (k$_T$ factorization) QCD approach, we consider the differential cross sections of $D^{*\pm}$ meson production at HERA. The consideration is based on BFKL and CCFM gluon distributions. We find that in the case of BFKL LO gluon distribution the theoretical results are sensitive to the Pomeron intercept parameter $Δ$. We present a comparison of the theoretical results with available ZEUS experimental data.
Recently the H1 and ZEUS collaborations have presented cross sections for DIS events with a forward jet. The BFKL formalism is able to produce an excellent fit to these data. The extracted intercept of the hard pomeron suggests that when all higher order corrections are taken into account the cross section will still rise very rapidly as expected for low $x$ dynamics.
We review the recent progress in the theory of diffractive DIS, focusing on predictions of strong breaking of the Ingelman-Schlein-Regge factorization and the related breaking of the GLDAP evolution for the diffractive structure function.
Onium-onium scattering at high energy is used to illustrate a dipole picture of high energy hard scattering in the large $N_c$ limit. Single and double BFKL pomeron exchanges are calculated in the leading logarithmic approximation. An expression is given for the triple pomeron coupling when one of the pomeron's momentum is zero while the other two have momentum transfer, t. This expression is explicit and could be evaluated numerically. It has a $(-t)^{-{1\over 2}}$ singularity at t=0.
We apply the flow analysis for multi-particle correlations used in heavy ion collisions to multi-particle production from a Pomeron. We show that the n'th order angular harmonic arising from an m particle correlation v_n[m] satisfies v_n[m] ~ v_n[p] for n $\ge$ 1. We discuss some implications of this for the Color Glass Condensate description of high energy hadronic collisions.
In this talk, I will argue that the HERA experimental data show that the typical parameter ($κ$) responsible for the value of the shadowing corrections (SC) in DIS is so large that the BFKL Pomeron is hidden under SC. The SC turn out to be large enough but mostly for the gluon structure function which is not well determined by the available experimental data and by the current theoretical procedure.
To study diffractive photon production at HERA, we compute the projection of the virtual photon-photon impact-factor on the BFKL leading-order eigenfunctions E(n,nu) for non-zero transfer. This calculation supplements former ones performed for n=0. We provide an expression for n=+/-2 and check that all the other components are zero.
We present microscopic QCD calculation of the cross section of diffractive DIS and of the partonic structure of the pomeron from the dipole approach to the generalized BFKL pomeron. We show that the pomeron can not be treated as a particle with uniquely defined structure function and flux in the proton. We find strong factorization breaking which can approximately be described by the two-component structure function of the pomeron, each component endowed with the different flux of pomerons in the proton. We predict very weak $Q^{2}$ dependence of the diffractive contribution to the proton stru…
We analyse here in LO the physical properties of the Green function solution for the BFKL equation. We show that the solution obeys the orthonormality conditions in the physical region and fulfills the completeness requirements. The unintegrated gluon density is shown to consists of a set of few poles with parameters which could be determined by comparison with the DIS data of high precision.
The kernel of the BFKL equation for non-zero momentum transfer is found at next-to-leading order. It is presented in various forms depending on the regularization of the infrared singularities in "virtual" and "real" parts of the kernel. The infrared safety of the total kernel is demonstrated and a form free from the singularities is suggested.
We present a new method for obtaining information on the small x behavior of the structure function F2 outside the kinematic range of present acelerators from the mean inelasticity parameter in UHE neutrino-nucleon DIS interactions which could be measured in neutrino telescopes.
In this Letter we study the double diffractive vector meson production in $e^+e^-$ collisions assuming the dominance of the BFKL pomeron exchange. We consider the non-forward solution of the BFKL equation at high energy and large momentum transfer and estimate the total cross section for the process $e^+e^- \to e^+e^- V_1 V_2$ with antitagged $e^+$ and $e^-$, where $V_1$ and $V_2$ can be any two vector mesons ($V_i = ρ, ω, ϕ, J/Ψ, Υ$). The event rates for the future linear colliders are given.
The Jet-Gap-Jet (JGJ) process as a way to test the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov Pomeron is introduced. The comparison with the Tevatron data as well as the predictions for the LHC are presented. In the second part, the possibility to measure the Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE) Jet-Gap-Jet process in the ATLAS experiment with additional AFP detectors is described. The ratio of the DPE jet-gap-jet cross section to the DPE jet cross section is presented.
The behaviour of the pomeron propagator in the external nuclear field is studied in the (2+1)-dimensional QCD. It is shown that in the physically interesting case when the field does not vanish at large rapidities the propagator in the field vanishes much faster than in the vacuum, in agreement with the results found in the local Regge-Gribov model. However if the nuclear field vanishes at high rapidities the field does not change the behaviour of the pomeron propagator.
In this lecture the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections to the QCD Pomeron intercept obtained from the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equation are discussed. It is shown that the BFKL Pomeron intercept when evaluated in non-Abelian physical renormalization schemes with Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie (BLM) optimal scale setting does not exhibit the serious problems encountered in the modified minimal subtraction (bar{MS}) scheme. The results obtained provide an opportunity for applications of the NLO BFKL resummation to high-energy phenomenology. One of such applications for virtual gamma-g…
We discuss the BFKL equation with a running gauge coupling and identify in its solutions the contributions originating from different transverse momentum scales. We show that for a running coupling constant the distribution of the gluons making up the BFKL Pomeron shifts to smaller transverse momenta so that the dominant part of Pomeron can have a nonperturbative origin. It is demonstrated how this soft physics enters into the BFKL solution through the boundary condition. We consider two kinematical regimes leading to different behaviour of the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of th…
Determination of the intercept of the BFKL pomeron is one of the pressing issues in the high energy physics. Earlier we have shown that, at the dipole size $r=r_Δ=(0.1-0.2)$f, the dipole cross section $σ(x,r)$ which is a solution of the generalized BFKL equation, exhibits a precocious asymptotic behavior $σ(x,r)\propto \left({1\over x}\right)^{Δ_{\Pom}}$. In this paper we discuss how measuring $F_{L}(x,Q^{2})$ and $\partial F_{T}(x,Q^{2})/\partial \log Q^{2}$ at $Q^{2}= (10-40)$GeV$^{2}$ and $Q^{2}=(2-10)$GeV$^{2}$, respectively, one can probe $σ(x,r_Δ)$ and directly determine the intercept $Δ…
The $S$-matrix of diffractive scattering is diagonalized in terms of the colour dipole-dipole cross section. Recently, we have shown that the dipole cross section satisfies the generalized BFKL equation. In this paper we discuss the spectrum and solutions of our generalized BFKL equation with allowance for the finite gluon correlation radius $R_{c}$. The latter is introduced in the gauge invariant manner. We present estimates of the intercept of the pomeron and find the asymptotic form of the dipole cross section. We consider the difference between the BFKL and GLDAP evolutions and conclude th…
Inclusive cross-sections for gluon production in collision of two mucleons with two nucleons are studied in the BFKL approach. Various contributions include emission from the pomerons attached to the participants, from the BFKL interactions in between these pomerons and from the intermediate BKP state. The last contribution may be observable provided the growth with energy of the pomeron contribution is tamed in accordance with unitarity.
The small-$t$ behaviour of the deep inelastic diffractive dissociation cross section in the triple Regge region is investigated, using the BFKL approximation in perturbative QCD. We show that the cross section is finite at $t=0$, but the diffusion in $\ln{k_t^2}$ leads to a large contribution of small momenta at the triple Pomeron vertex. We study the dependence upon the total energy and the invariant mass. At $t=0$, there is a decoupling of the three BFKL singularities which is a consequence of the conservation of the conformal dimension. For large invariant masses, the four gluon state in th…
In this paper we solve the equation for nucleus-nucleus scattering in the BFKL Pomeron calculus, suggested by Braun. We find these solutions analytically at high energies as well as numerically in the entire region of energies inside the saturation region. The semi-classical approximation is used to select out the infinite set of the parasite solutions. The nucleus-nucleus cross sections at high energy are estimated and compared with the Glauber-Gribov approach. It turns out that the exact formula gives the estimates that are very close to the ones based on Glauber-Gribov formula which is impo…
Starting from the same input as the standard BFKL Pomeron, we directly calculate the ``hard'' Pomeron as a gluonic ladder by using Monte Carlo methods. We reproduce the characteristic features of the the BFKL Pomeron and are now also able to evaluate new observables. The applicability of the BFKL approach under realistic kinematical conditions can be tested and the influence of the running coupling constant examined.
We analyze the evolution equation describing all multiple hard pomeron exchanges in a hadronic or nuclear structure functions that was proposed earlier. We construct a perturbation series providing us with an exact solution to the equation outside of the saturation region. The series demonstrates how at moderately high energies the corrections to the single BFKL pomeron exchange contribution which are due to the multiple pomeron exchanges start unitarizing total deep inelastic scattering cross section. We show that as energy increases the scattering cross section of the quark-antiquark pair of…
In this work the double vector meson production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is investigated within the BFKL approach. The integrated cross sections and event rates for the processes AA --> V1 V2 AA (V_i = rho, omega, phi, J/Psi, Upsilon) are computed and theoretical estimates for scattering on both light and heavy nuclei are given for energies of RHIC and LHC.
We investigate the sensitivity of the discrete BFKL spectrum, which appears in the gluon Green function when the running coupling is considered, to a lower cut-off in the relative rapidities of the emitted particles. We find that the eigenvalues associated to each of the discrete eigenfunctions decrease with the size of the rapidity veto. The effect is stronger on the lowest eigenfunctions. The net result is a reduction of the growth with energy for the Green function together with a suppression in the regions with small transverse momentum.
In this paper the exact analytical solution is found for the BFKL Pomeron calculus in zero transverse dimensions, in which all Pomeron loops have been included. The comparison with the approximate methods of the solution is given, and the kinematic regions are discussed where they describe the behaviour of the scattering amplitude quite well. In particular, the semi-classical approach is considered, which reproduces the main properties of the exact solution at large values of rapidity ($Y \geq 10$). It is shown that the mean field approximation leads to a good description of the scattering amp…
We consider scattering amplitudes in string models in the Regge limit of high energies and fixed momentum transfers with the use of the unitarity in direct channels. Intermediate states are taken in the multi-Regge kinematics corresponding to the production of resonances with fixed invariant masses and large relative rapidities. In QCD such kinematics leads to the BFKL equation for the Pomeron wave function in the leading logarithmic approximation. We derive a similar equation in the string theory and discuss its properties. The purpose of this investigation is to find a generalization of the …
{\narrower\smallskip High Energy onium-onium scattering is calculated as a function of impact parameter in the one and two pomeron exchange approximation. Difficulties with using the multiple scattering series to unitarize single pomeron exchange at high energy are noted. An operator formalsim which sums all numbers of pomeron exchange is given. A toy model which has a similar operator structure at high energy as QCD is presented and the S-matrix is evaluated. Estimates of the energies and impact parameters at which blackness occurs in onium-onium scattering are given. It is emphased that the …
We compute the onium-onium scattering amplitude at fixed impact parameter in the framework of the perturbative QCD dipole model. Relying on the conformal properties of the dipole cascade and of the elementary dipole-dipole scattering amplitude, we obtain an exact result for this onium-onium scattering amplitude, which is proved to be identical to the BFKL result, and which is frame invariant. The asymptotic expression for this amplitude at fixed impact parameter agrees with previous numerical simulations.
We analyze contributions to the heavy vector meson production with large transverse momentum in proton--proton and diffractive photon--proton scattering driven by an exchange of two Balitsky--Fadin--Kuraev--Lipatov Pomerons in the squared amplitudes. The Pomerons couple to a single parton and form a Pomeron loop closed by the vector meson impact factors. For the photon--proton case the diffractive cut of the Pomeron loop contributes, and for the inclusive hadroproduction one finds the loop with two cut Pomerons. We compute both of these Pomeron loop contributions and study in detail their prop…
Double inclusive cross-sections for gluon production in collision of two nucleons with two nucleons are studied in the BFKL approach. Various contributions include emission from the pomerons attached to the participants, from the BFKL interactions between these pomerons and from the intermediate BKP state. The last contribution may be observable provided the growth with energy of the pomeron contribution is tamed in accordance with unitarity. Possibility of long-range azimuthal correlations due to the BKP state are discussed.
We calculate shadowing in the process of deep inelastic interactions of leptons with nuclei in the perturbative regime of QCD. We find appreciable shadowing for heavy nuclei (e.g. Pb) in the region of small Bjorken scaling variable $10^{-5}\leq x \leq 10^{-3}$. This shadowing depends weakly on $Q^2$, but it may be strongly influenced, especially at $x \geq 10^{-3}$, by the existence of real parts of the forward scattering amplitudes.
