We propose a new model to explain the neutrino masses, the dark energy and the baryon asymmetry altogether. In this model, neutrinos naturally acquire small Majorana masses via type-II seesaw mechanism, while the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons associated with the neutrino mass-generation mechanism provide attractive candidates for dark energy. The baryon asymmetry of the universe is produced from the Higgs triplets decay with CP-violation.
We compute the baryon asymmetry in the Universe in the framework of the standard model with the only source of CP violation in the CKM matrix. Our result is within and very close to the theoretical limits for baryon asymmetry found in the literature and too small to account for the experimentally required baryon asymmetry in standard cosmologies. The method can be easily extended to beyond standard model theories.
The smallness of the baryon asymmetry in our universe is one of the greatest mysteries and may originate from some profound physics beyond the standard model. We investigate the Affleck-Dine baryogenesis in split supersymmetry, and find that the smallness of the baryon asymmetry is directly related to the hierarchy between the supersymmetry breaking squark/slepton masses and the weak scale. Put simply, the baryon asymmetry is small because of the split mass spectrum.
I review the present understanding of connection between the non-zero neutrino masses and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. The state-of-art results are presented for the standard thermal leptogenesis.
In the framework of the baryogenesis via leptogenesis mechanism we study the link between the amount of baryon asymmetry and neutrino mass matrices. In particular, neglecting phases, we find that if the Dirac neutrino mass matrix is related to the up quark mass matrix, the baryon asymmetry is about three orders smaller than the required value. If the Dirac neutrino mass matrix is related to the down quark or the charged lepton mass matrix, the baryon asymmetry is about two orders smaller than the required value. In order to get a sufficient amount of baryon asymmetry we need a more moderate hi…
We complete an existing result for how the baryon asymmetry left over after a period of full thermal equilibrium depends on different lepton asymmetries.
We study the generation of the baryon asymmetry in a variant of the standard model, where the Higgs field is stabilized by a dimension-six interaction. Analyzing the one-loop potential, we find a strong first order electroweak phase transition for Higgs masses up to at least 170 GeV. Dimension-six operators induce also new sources of CP violation. We compute the baryon asymmetry in the WKB approximation. Novel source terms in the transport equations enhance the generated baryon asymmetry. For a wide range of parameters the model predicts a baryon asymmetry close to the observed value.
We propose a new mechanism to understand the relation between the baryon and dark matter asymmetries in the universe in theories where the baryon number is a local symmetry. In these scenarios the B-L asymmetry generated through a mechanism such as leptogenesis is transferred to the dark matter and baryonic sectors through sphalerons processes which conserve total baryon number. We show that it is possible to have a consistent relation between the dark matter relic density and the baryon asymmetry in the universe even if the baryon number is broken at the low scale through the Higgs mechanism.…
We explore a new origin of neutrino dark energy and baryon asymmetry in the universe. The neutrinos acquire small masses through the Dirac seesaw mechanism. The pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with neutrino mass-generation provides a candidate for dark energy. The puzzle of cosmological baryon asymmetry is resolved via neutrinogenesis.
In the inverse seesaw scenario, several fermion singlets have a small Majorana mass term. We show such Majorana masses can be suppressed by some heavy fermion and/or Higgs singlets after a global symmetry is spontaneously broken. These interactions can also accommodate a leptogenesis mechanism to explain the cosmic baryon asymmetry.
In some models of supersymmetry breaking, modulus fields are heavy enough to decay before BBN. But the large entropy produced via moduli decay significantly dilutes the preexisting baryon asymmetry of the universe. We study whether Affleck-Dine mechanism can provide enough baryon asymmetry which survives the dilution, and find several situations in which desirable amount of baryon number remains after the dilution. The possibility of non-thermal dark matter is also discussed. This provides the realistic cosmological scenario with heavy moduli.
We propose a mechanism for hiding the primordial baryon asymmetry from interactions that could wash it out. It requires the introduction of a baryon number carrying singlet which is in equilibrium in the early universe and shares any existing baryon asymmetry. It decouples from the Standard Model particles before all the interactions required to wash out the asymmetry are in equilibrium ($T \simeq 10$ TeV), and decays after the electroweak phase transition, but before nucleosynthesis. This mechanism can conserve a baryon asymmetry in models (a) with $B-L = 0$, such as many $SU(5)$ GUTs, or (b)…
Neutrinoless double beta decay, lepton number violating collider processes and the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) are intimately related. In particular lepton number violating processes at low energies in combination with sphaleron transitions will typically erase any pre-existing baryon asymmetry of the Universe. In this contribution we briefly review the tight connection between neutrinoless double beta decay, lepton number violating processes at the LHC and constraints from successful baryogenesis. We argue that far-reaching conclusions can be drawn unless the baryon asymmetry is st…
We analyze the phenomenological consequences of a Lorentz violating energy-momentum dispersion relation in order to give a simple explanation for the baryon asymmetry in the Universe. By assuming very few hypotheses, we propose a straightforward mechanism for generating the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry which entails a Lorentz-breakdown energy scale of the order of the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cut-off.
The asymmetry of strange baryon production in Kp interactions at high energies is considered in the framework of the Quark-Gluon String Model. The contribution of the String-Junction Mechanism to the strange baryon production is analysed.
We study a possibility of combining an origin of the $μ$-term and the baryon and lepton number asymmetry. If we assume that the $μ$-term is generated through a flat direction of a singlet scalar field, the coherent oscillation of this condensate around its potential minimum can store the global U(1) charge asymmetry. The decay of this condensate can distribute this asymmetry into the lepton and baryon number asymmetry as far as its decay occurs at an appropriate temperature. We examine the compatibility between this scenario and the small neutrino mass generation based on both the ordinary see…
We propose a new mechanism of baryogenesis which proceeds via a CP-violating phase transition. During this phase transition, the coupling of the Weinberg operator is dynamically realised and subsequently a lepton asymmetry is generated via the non-zero interference of this operator at different times. This new scenario of leptogenesis provides a direct connection between the baryon asymmetry, low energy neutrino parameters and leptonic flavour models.
Baryon asymmetry of the universe can be generated by new sources of $CP$ violation intrinsic in supersymmetric extension of the standard model. This scenario predicts the neutron electric dipole moment to be not much smaller than its present experimental upper bound.
The D0 collaboration has reported a 3.2 σdeviation from the Standard Model (SM) prediction in the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry. New physics beyond the SM in B_s - \bar B_s mixing is needed to explain the data. In this paper, we investigate the possible extension of the SM with one generation color-triplet charged scalar as well as three generation Majorana fermions. We study the implications of the model on the D0's dimuon charge asymmetry as well as matter anti-matter asymmetry of the Universe.
A successful baryogenesis theory requires a baryon-minus-lepton number violation if it works before the electroweak phase transition. The baryon-minus-lepton number violation could also exist in some proton decay modes. We propose a model to show that the cosmological baryon asymmetry and the proton decay could have a common origin. Specifically, we introduce an isotriplet and two isosinglet leptoquark scalars as well as two isotriplet Higgs scalars to the canonical seesaw model. The decays of the Higgs triplets can generate a desired baryon-minus-lepton asymmetry in the leptoquarks. After the…
We compute and also compare the contributions of canonical and noncanonical mass terms towards baryon asymmetry by considering type-II seesaw mass models of neutrinos: Degenerare(3 varieties), Normal hierarchical and Inverted hierarchical(2 varieties). We have shown that for particular choices of parameter '$γ$'(the so-called discriminator) for different neutrino mass models, the baryon asymmetry is largely dominated by canonical term. Within such type-II seesaw scenario, we find normal hierarchical mass model as the most favourable choice of nature.
In this paper, we study the simultaneous evolution of baryon asymmetry and hypermagnetic field amplitude assuming an early matter domination. We contrast our results to the conventional case where radiation domination during early universe is assumed. We show that the baryon asymmetry and the hypermagntic field amplitude can change by orders of magnitude if we assume a non-standard history of cosmology. That is because the Hubble rate determines which processes are efficient. We find that a change in Hubble rate can have a significant impact on when the weak sphalerons become active. As a resu…
We extend the standard model fermions by a mirror copy to realize a left-right symmetry. During a strongly first order phase transition of the spontaneous left-right symmetry breaking, the CP-violating reflections of the mirror fermions off the mirror Higgs bubbles can generate a mirror lepton asymmetry and an equal mirror baryon asymmetry. We then can obtain an ordinary baryon asymmetry through the mirror fermion decays where a dark matter scalar plays an essential role. Benefitted from a parity symmetry for solving the strong CP problem, the cosmic baryon asymmetry can be well described by t…
We present a generic framework, "baryomorphosis", which modifies the baryon asymmetry to be naturally of the order of a typical thermal relic WIMP density. We consider a simple scalar-based model to show how this is possible. This model introduces a sector in which a large initial baryon asymmetry is injected into particles ("annihilons") phi_B, \bar{phi}_B of mass ~ 100 GeV - 1 TeV. phi_B-\bar{phi}_B annihilations convert the initial phi_B, \bar{phi}_B asymmetry to a final asymmetry with a thermal relic WIMP-like density. This subsequently decays to a conventional baryon asymmetry whose magni…
We will review the main aspects of a mechanism for the contemporary generation of the baryon and Dark Matter abundances from the out-of-equilibrium decay of a Wimp-like mother particle and briefly discuss a concrete realization in a Supersymmetric scenario.
The presence of additional neutrino states with masses in the GeV range is allowed by electro-weak precision observables. However, these additional states can lead to lepton number violating interactions which potentially can wash out considerably any GUT scale generated or elsewise pre-existing baryon asymmetry. We discuss the resulting bounds on neutrino parameters and find that - unless the baryon asymmetry is created at or below the electroweak scale or in some flavor which is decoupled from interactions to the new neutrino states - these have to be pseudo-Dirac with mass splittings betwee…
The baryon asymmetry of the universe can be explained by the out-of-equilibrium decays of heavy right-handed neutrinos. We analyse this mechanism in the framework of a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model and show that lepton number violating scatterings are indispensable for baryogenesis, even though they may wash-out a generated asymmetry. By assuming a similar pattern of mixings and masses for neutrinos and up-type quarks, as suggested by SO(10) unification, we can generate the observed baryon asymmetry without any fine tuning, if (B-L) is broken at the unification scale Λ_{GUT}\s…
The magic texture is one of the successful textures of the flavor neutrino mass matrix for Majorana neutrinos. In this paper, it turns out that two new types of magic textures are also consistent with the neutrino oscillation experiments, observation of cosmic microwave background radiation, and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. The connection between these new magic textures and the leptogenesis scenario of the origin of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is also discussed.
We propose a resonant leptogenesis scenario in a U(1)_{B-L} gauge extension of the standard model to generate large lepton asymmetries for cosmological baryon asymmetry and dark matter. After B-L number is spontaneously broken, inflaton can pick up a small vacuum expectation value for the mass splits of three pairs of quasi-degenerately heavy Majorana neutrinos and the masses of three sterile neutrinos. With thermal mass effects of sphalerons, the observed small baryon asymmetry can be converted from large lepton asymmetries of individual flavors although total lepton asymmetry is assumed zero…
In the left-right symmetric models without bi-doublet Higgs scalars, the standard model fermions can obtain masses by integrating out heavy charged singlet fermions. We find the decays of heavy neutral singlet fermions, responsible for generating small neutrino masses, can simultaneously produce a left-handed lepton asymmetry for baryon asymmetry and a relic density of right-handed neutrinos for dark matter. Benefited from the left-right symmetry, the properties of the dark matter can be related to the generation of the neutrino masses and the baryon asymmetry. We also indicate that the decays…
In the present work we study non-thermal leptogenesis and baryon asymmetry in the universe in different neutrino mass models discussed recently. For each model we obtain a formula relating the reheating temperature after inflation to the inflaton mass. It is shown that all but four cases are excluded and that in the cases which survive the inflaton mass and the reheating temperature after inflation are bounded from below and from above.
We study neutrino masses and mixings based on the simplest SO(10) mass relations and the seesaw mechanism. We find that the requirement of large neutrino mixings determines the relative magnitude of the heavy Majorana neutrino masses in terms of the known quark mass hierarchy. This leads to specific predictions for the structure of the neutrino mixing matrix, the light neutrino masses, CP violation in neutrino oscillations, neutrinoless double b-decay and the baryon asymmetry.
We present a mechanism to generate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe which preserves the net baryon number created in the Big Bang. If dark matter particles carry baryon number $B_X$, and $σ^{\rm annih}_{\bar{X}} < σ^{\rm annih}_{X} $, the $\bar{X}$'s freeze out at a higher temperature and have a larger relic density than $X$'s. If $m_X \lsi 4.5 B_X $GeV and the annihilation cross sections differ by $\mathcal{O}$(10%) or more, this type of scenario naturally explains the observed $Ω_{DM} \approx 5 Ω_b$. Two concrete examples are given, one of which can be excluded on observational grounds.
In theories where $B-L$ is a spontaneously broken local symmetry, the cosmological baryon asymmetry can be generated by the out-of-equilibrium decay of heavy Majorana neutrinos. We study this mechanism assuming a similar pattern of mixings and masses for leptons and quarks, as suggested by SO(10) unification. This implies that $B-L$ is broken at the unification scale $Λ_{\mbox{\scriptsize GUT}}\sim 10^{16}$ GeV, if $m_{\n_\m} \sim 3\cdot 10^{-3}$eV as preferred by the MSW explanation of the solar neutrino deficit. The observed value of the baryon asymmetry, $n_B/s \sim 10^{-10}$, is then obtai…
We investigate the Q-ball decay into the axino dark matter in the gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. In our scenario, the Q ball decays mainly into nucleons and partially into axinos to account respectively for the baryon asymmetry and the dark matter of the universe. The Q ball decays well before the big bang nucleosynthesis so that it is not affected by the decay. We show the region of the parameters which realizes this scenario.
I suggest a left-right mirror symmetric particle model as the natural and aesthetic extension of the SM. As the left-right mirror symmetry breaking, the tiny neutrino mass is generated by the radiative mechanism, the baryon asymmetry through the leptogenesis arises from the characteristic decay of the TeV-scale mirror charged lepton, and a KeV-mass sterile Dirac fermion eventually becomes the CDM. The model can completely account for the common origin of the neutrino mass, the baryon asymmetry and the dark matter, moreover, profoundly uncover the internal connections among them. Finally, I dis…
The mass hierarchies of quarks and charged leptons as well as a large $\n_\m$-$\n_\t$ mixing angle are naturally explained by the Frogatt-Nielsen mechanism with a nonparallel family structure of chiral charges. We extend this mechanism to right-handed neutrinos. Their out-of-equilibrium decay generates a cosmological baryon asymmetry whose size is quantized in powers of the hierarchy parameter $\e^2$. For the simplest hierarchy pattern the neutrino mass $\bar{m}_\n= (m_{\n_\m}m_{\n_\t})^{1/2} \sim 10^{-2}$ eV, which is inferred from present indications for neutrino oscillations, implies a bary…
We propose to measure the decay asymmetry parameters in the hadronic weak decays of singly charmed baryons, such as $\ldc\to\ldπ^+,Σ^0π^+,p \bar K_0$, $Ξ_c^0\toΞ^-π^+$ and $Ω_c^0\toΩ^-π^+$. The joint angular formulae for these processes are presented, and are used to extract the asymmetry parameters in $\ee$ annihilation data. Base on the current $\ldc$ data set collected at BESIII, we estimate the experimental sensitivities to measure the parameters $α_{\ldπ^+}$ for $\ldc\to\ldπ^+$, $α_{Σ^+π^0}$ for $\ldc\toΣ^+π^0$ and $α_{\usigπ^+}$ for $\ldc\to\usigπ^+$.
We comment on a statement made in arXiv:1107.0403, which implies that the model of gravitino dark matter from Q-ball decay we presented in arXiv:1101.5328 is generally ruled out by the effect of NLSP decay on BBN. We explain why this statement is incorrect.
We discuss the correlation between the CP violating Dirac phase of the lepton mixing matrix and the cosmological baryon asymmetry based on the leptogenesis in the minimal seesaw model with two right-handed Majorana neutrinos and the trimaximal mixing for neutrino flavors. The sign of the CP violating Dirac phase at low energy is fixed by the observed cosmological baryon asymmetry since there is only one phase parameter in the model. According to the recent T2K and NO$ν$A data of the CP violation, the Dirac neutrino mass matrix of our model is fixed only for the normal hierarchy of neutrino mas…
A simplified but very instructive analysis of the seesaw mechanism is here performed. Assuming a nearly diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix, we study the forms of the Majorana mass matrix of right-handed neutrinos, which reproduce the effective mass matrix of left-handed neutrinos. As a further step, the important effect of a non diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix is explored. The corresponding implications for the baryogenesis via leptogenesis and for the neutrinoless double beta decay are reviewed. We propose two distinct models where the baryon asymmetry is enhanced.
Baryogenesis appears to require lepton number violation. This is naturally realized in extensions of the standard model containing right-handed neutrinos. We discuss the generation of a baryon asymmetry by the out-of-equilibrium decay of heavy Majorana neutrinos in these models, without and with supersymmetry. All relevant lepton number violating scattering processes which can inhibit the generation of an asymmetry are taken into account. We assume a similar pattern of mixings and masses for neutrinos and up-type quarks, as suggested by SO(10) unification. This implies that B-L is broken at th…
The baryon asymmetry of the Universe requires CP violation, but the Standard Model falls short by a factor of $10^{-10}$ or more. Starting from a clue at the $B$ factories, we point out that the large Yukawa couplings of the sequential fourth generation $t^\prime$ and $b^\prime$ quarks can provide enhancement by a factor of over $10^{13}$, making the 2-3-4 generation quark sector a viable source of CP violation for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. With recent hints of large $\sin2Φ_{B_s}$ in $B_s^0$-$\bar B_s^0$ mixing from the Tevatron, the ultimate test would be to discover the $t^\prim…
The calculation of muon spectra from the decay of Lambda_c baryons was carried out on the basis of the description of recent data on charmed-baryon production in hadronic interactions. Data are described in the framework of Quark--Gluon String Model that allowes us to consider primary proton interactions of arbitrary high energy. MC code was built for charmed-baryon semileptonic decay in order to obtain the kinematical characteristics of resulting particles. It is predicted that the charge asymmetry between energy spectra of mu+ and mu- in laboratory system is clearly seen as the consequence o…
Due to sphaleron processes in the high-temperature symmetric phase of the standard model the cosmological baryon asymmetry is related to neutrino properties. For hierarchical neutrino masses, with $B-L$ broken at the unification scale $Λ_{GUT}\sim 10^{16} $GeV, the observed baryon asymmetry $n_B/s \sim 10^{-10}$ can be naturally explained by the decay of heavy Majorana neutrinos. We illustrate this mechanism with two models of neutrino masses, consistent with the solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies, which are based on the two symmetry groups $SU(5)\times U(1)_F$ and $SU(3)_c\times SU(3)_L…

The radiative neutrino mass model with an inert doublet scalar has been considered as a promising candidate which can explain neutrino masses, dark matter abundance and baryon number asymmetry if dark matter is identified with the lightest neutral component of the inert doublet. We reexamine these properties by imposing all the data of the neutrino oscillation, which are recently suggested by the reactor experiments. We find that the sufficient baryon number asymmetry seems not to be easily generated in a consistent way with all the data of the neutrino masses and mixing as long as the right-h…
We show that in an SU(3)_c\times [SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y]\times [SU(2)'_R\times U(1)'_Y] framework, the parity symmetry motivated by solving the strong CP problem without resorting to an axion can predict a dark matter particle with a mass around 302 GeV. This dark matter candidate can be directly detected in the presence of a U(1)_Y\times U(1)'_Y kinetic mixing. Furthermore, our model can accommodate a natural way to simultaneously realize an inverse-linear seesaw for neutrino masses and a resonant leptogenesis for baryon asymmetry.
