The noteworthy BaBar and Belle evidence for $D^0$-$\bar{D}^0$ mixing motivates us to study its impact on $D^0\to K^{*\pm} K^\mp$ decays and their CP-conjugate processes. We show that both the $D^0$-$\bar{D}^0$ mixing parameters ($x$ and $y$) and the strong phase difference between $\bar{D}^0\to K^{*\pm}K^\mp$ and $D^0\to K^{*\pm}K^\mp$ transitions ($δ$) can be determined or constrained from the time-dependent measurements of these decay modes. On the $ψ(3770)$ and $ψ(4140)$ resonances at a $τ$-charm factory, it is even possible to determine or constrain $x$, $y$ and $δ$ from the time-independent measurements of coherent $(D^0\bar{D}^0) \to (K^{*\pm} K^\mp)(K^{*\pm} K^\mp)$ decays. If the CP-violating phase of $D^0$-$\bar{D}^0$ mixing is significant in a scenario beyond the standard model, it can also be extracted from the $K^{*\pm} K^\mp$ events.
We present the summary of the working group on $B$ mixing and the related CP violation at the CKM 2014 workshop. The contributions reflect the experimental and theoretical progress in the field over the last two years since the last CKM workshop.
A simple analysis of time-dependent $B_s\to K^+K^-$ transitions, based on recent results from the LHCb experiment, is presented. The benefits of adopting a fully consistent theoretical description of the $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing are stressed. It is shown that bounds on CPT violation in the $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ system can be consistently obtained and that direct CP violation in $B_s\to K^+K^-$ can be robustly established, even in the presence of CPT violation in the mixing.
Mixing and CP violation in charm meson decays provide a unique probe of possible physics beyond the standard model. In this paper, we give a brief review of the current measurements from the BABAR experiment.
The two kinds of indirect CP violation in neutral meson systems are related, in the absence of new weak phases in decay. The result is a model-independent expression relating CP violation in mixing, CP violation in the interference of decays with and without mixing, and the meson mass and width differences. It relates the semileptonic and time-dependent CP asymmetries; and CP-conjugate pairs of time-dependent $D^0$ CP asymmetries. CP violation in the interference of decays with and without mixing is related to the mixing parameters of relevance to model building: the off-diagonal mixing matrix…
We calculate the rephasing invariants of CP and T violation in a favorable parametrization of the 4x4 lepton flavor mixing matrix. Their relations with the CP- and T-violating asymmetries in neutrino oscillations are derived, and the matter effects are briefly discussed.
The "10$^{\rm th}$ International Workshop on the CKM Unitary Triangle" took place at the University of Heidelberg on September 17$^{\rm th}$-21$^{\rm st}$, 2018. In this write-up, we summarize the material discussed at the workshop by the Working Group 7, which focused on latest experimental results and theoretical developments in the study of mixing and $CP$ violation in the neutral $D$ system, and of $CP$ violation and decay properties of other charm mesons and baryons.
I present here the HFAG averages for the parameters that regulate flavor mixing and \CP violation in the neutral $D$ meson system. I also discuss recent results from the $B$ factories for the measurements of the mixing parameter \yCP and the \CP violation parameter \deltaY (\AGamma) in the lifetime ratio analysis of the transitions to the \CP-even eigenstates $\Dz\to K^+K^-,π^+π^-$, relative to the transitions to the \CP-mixed state $\Dz \to K^-π^+$.
A brief overview of flavour-changing phenomena is presented. The main topics discussed are the universality and Lorentz structure of the leptonic charged-current couplings, our present knowledge of the quark-mixing matrix and the future prospects for CP--violation studies.
I introduce a simple phenomenological model of lepton flavor mixing and CP violation based on the flavor democracy of charged leptons and the mass degeneracy of neutrinos. The nearly bi-maximal mixing pattern, which can interpret current data on atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations, emerges naturally from this model. The rephasing-invariant strength of CP or T violation amounts to about one percent and could be measured in the long-baseline neutrino experiments. The similarity and difference between lepton and quark flavor mixing phenomena are also discussed.
We propose a phenomenological model of lepton mixing and CP violation based on the flavor democracy of charge leptons and the mass degeneracy of neutrinos. A nearly bi-maximal flavor mixing pattern, which is favored by current data on atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations, emerges naturally from this model after explicit symmetry breaking. The rephasing-invariant strength of CP or T violation can be as large as one percent, leading to significant probability asymmetries between ν_μ\to ν_e and \barν_μ\to \barν_e (or ν_e \to ν_μ) transitions in the long-baseline neutrino experiments.
An analysis from the D0 Collaboration measuring the charge asymmetry A^b_sl of like-sign dimuon events due to semileptonic b-hadron decays at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider is described. It differs by 3.2 standard deviations from the Standard Model prediction to provide first evidence of CPT-invariant anomalous CP violation in the mixing of neutral B mesons, and is compared to the CP-violating phase obtained from a D0 analysis of the time-dependent decay angles in B0_s -> J/psi phi. If CPT violation is allowed, the dimuon asymmetry also yields the first sensitivity to CPT violation in the B0_s…
We provide an overview of the latest progress in the study of CP violation and mixing in the $B$ meson decays. Studying the $B^0_d \to J/ψK^0_S$ and $B^0_s \to J/ψϕ$ decays, we focus on the determination of the mixing phases $ϕ_d$ and $ϕ_s$, including hadronic uncertainties with the help of the data. CP violation in the non-leptonic decays $B \to πK$ and $B^0_s \to D_s^{\mp} K^{\pm}$ indicate puzzling patterns. Could these puzzles indicate New Physics?
We summarize the new results on $B$ meson mixing and mixing-related $CP$ violation presented at CKM2016. We place these results in the context of both previous experimental measurements and the most recent theoretical developments in the field, and discuss prospects for ongoing and future mixing and mixing-related $CP$ violation measurements.
We searched for a sidereal modulation in the rate of neutrinos observed by the MINOS far detector. The detection of these signals could be a signature of neutrino-antineutrino mixing due to Lorentz and CPT violation as described by the Standard-Model Extension framework. We found no evidence for these sidereal signals and we placed limits on the coefficients in this theory describing the effect.
We review results from FNAL E791 concerning D0-D0bar mixing and CP violation in D meson decays. We have searched for mixing in semileptonic D0 -> K+\ell-\barν decays and in hadronic D0 -> K+π- and D0 -> K+π-π+π- decays. We have searched for CP violation in D0 -> K+K- / π+π- and D+ -> ϕπ+ / \bar{K}^{*0}K+ / K+K-π+ / π+π-π+ decays. Finally, we have measured the difference in decay widths ΔΓbetween the two mass-eigenstates of the D0-D0bar system. This parameter affects the rate of D0-D0bar mixing. We combine our results with those from other experiments to obtain confidence intervals incorporatin…
We analyze CP violation in resonant transitions involving scalar as well as fermionic intermediate states, using a gauge-invariant resummation approach implemented by the pinch technique. We derive the necessary conditions for resonantly enhanced CP violation induced by particle mixing, by paying special attention to CPT invariance, and apply the results of our analysis to two representative new-physics scenarios: (i) the indirect mixing of a CP-even Higgs scalar with a CP-odd Higgs particle in two-Higgs doublet models and (ii) the CP-asymmetric mixing between the top quark and a new heavy up-…
We point out two simple but instructive possibilities to construct the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, from which the nearly bi-maximal neutrino mixing with large T violation can naturally emerge. The two lepton mixing scenarios are compatible very well with current experimental data on solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations, and one of them may lead to an observable T-violating asymmetry between ν_μ--> ν_e and ν_e --> ν_μtransitions in the long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. Their implications on the neutrinoless double beta decay are also discussed.
We present recent LHCb results and future prospects for CP violation and mixing measurements in multi-body charm decays. The complex amplitude structure of multi-body decays provides unique sensitivity to CP violation localised in certain phase space regions. A model-independent search in the phase space of D->pi+pi-pi+pi- and D->K+K-pi+pi- decays showed no evidence for localised CP violation. If one assumes the no CP violation hypothesis, the probability of getting the observed results is 9.1% and 41%, respectively. The model-independent determination of gamma from B->DK requires external inp…
Motivated by the $3.8σ$ deviation from no CP violation hypothesis for the CP asymmetry (CPA) difference between $D^0\to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0\to π^+ π^-$, reported recently by LHCb and CDF, we investigate the CP violating effect due to the left-right (LR) mixing in the general LR symmetric model. In particular, in the non-manifest LR model we show that the large CPA difference could be explained, while the constraints from $(ε'/ε)_K$ and $D^0$-$\bar D^0$ are satisfied.
We present a classification of possible parametrizations of the 3x3 lepton flavor mixing matrix in terms of the rotation and phase angles. A particular parametrization, which is most convenient to describe the observables of neutrino oscillations and that of the neutrinoless double beta decay, is studied in detail. The possibility to determine the Dirac- and Majorana-type CP-violating phases are also discussed.
We show that the commutator of lepton mass matrices is invariant under terrestial matter effects in the four-neutrino mixing scheme. A set of model-independent sum rules for neutrino masses, which may be generalized to hold for an arbitrary number of neutrino families, are for the first time uncovered. Useful sum rules for the rephasing-invariant measures of leptonic CP violation have also been found. Finally we present a generic formula of T-violating asymmetries and expect it to be applicable to the future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.
The formulae for D^0-\bar{D}^0 or B^0-\bar{B}^0 mixing and CP violation at the τ-charm or B-meson factories are derived, for the case that only the decay-time distribution of one D or B meson is to be measured. In particular, we point out a new possibility to determine the D^0-\bar{D}^0 mixing rate in semileptonic D decays at the Ψ(4.14) resonance; and show that both direct and indirect CP asymmetries can be measured at the Υ(4S) resonance without ordering the decay times of two B_d mesons or measuring their difference.
The anomalous dimuon charge asymmetry reported by the D0 Collaboration may be due to the tree-level exchange of some spin-0 particles that mediate CP violation in B_s-\bar{B}_s meson mixing. We show that for a range of couplings and masses, the heavy neutral states in a two Higgs doublet model can generate a large charge asymmetry. This range is natural in "uplifted supersymmetry", and may enhance the B^- -> tau nu and B_s -> mu^+ mu^- decay rates. However, we point out that on general grounds the reported central value of the charge asymmetry requires new physics not only in B_s-\bar{B}_s mix…
In this review, the $X^{0}-\bar{X}^{0}$\ mixing ($% X^{0}=B^{0},B_{s}^{0},K^{0}$) and its implication for CP\ violation in the standard model are discussed. Both direct and mixing induced CP\ violation for $K^{0}(\bar{K}^{0})$, $B^{0}(\bar{B}^{0})$\ and $B_{s}^{0}(% \bar{B}_{s}^{0})$\ are reviewed.
Predictive spontaneous CP violation is possible if it is obtained geometrically through a non-Abelian discrete symmetry. I propose such a model of neutrino mass and mixing based on Delta(27).
We have analyzed the possibility that the universal Yukawa coupling (democratic mass matrix) with small violations of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos can induce the large mixing of neutrinos through the seesaw mechanism. The possibility can be achieved by the condition that the violation parameters of Majorana neutrinos are sufficiently smaller than the violation parameters of Dirac neutrinos. Allowed regions of the violation parameters producing the observed neutrino mass hierarchy and large neutrino mixing are not so restricted at present in contrast to the violation parameters for quark sector…
The current status of our knowledge of the 3-neutrino mixing parameters and of the CP violation in the lepton sector is summarised. The discrete symmetry approach to understanding the observed pattern of neutrino mixing and the related predictions for neutrino mixing angles and leptonic Dirac CP violation are reviewed.
The existence of $D^0-\overline{D^0}$ mixing at a detectable level requires new physics, which effectively yields a $Δc = 2$ superweak interaction. In general this interaction may involve significant CP violation. For small values of the mixing it may be much easier to detect the CP-violating part of the mixing than the CP-conserving part.
This summary reviews contributions to the CKM 2021 workshop in Working Group 4. In particular, theoretical and experimental progress in determining $B$ meson mixing properties are discussed.
Using the experimental data on meson decay rates, mixing and CP violation we set competitive upper and lower limits to the parameter tan(beta) as a function of the mass of the charged Higgs m_H in the Two Higgs Doublet Model (Model II).
We present neutrino mass matrices which predict the atmospheric neutrino mixing to be almost maximal, $\sin^2 2θ_{atm}>0.999$, as well as the large solar neutrino mixing, $8/9>\sin^2 2θ_{sol}>0.87$, and the large CP violation (the CP violation phase in the standard form is maximal $δ=π/2$), based on the $Z_3$ symmetry.
Within the framework of three lepton families we have derived an exact and compact formula to describe the matter effect on neutrino mixing and CP violation. This model- and parametrization-independent result can be particularly useful for recasting the fundamental lepton flavor mixing matrix from a variety of long-baseline neutrino experiments.
We point out two simple but instructive possibilities to modify the tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing ansatz, such that leptonic CP violation can naturally be incorporated into the resultant scenarios of nearly tri-bimaximal flavor mixing. The consequences of two new ansaetze on solar, atmospheric and reactor neutrino oscillations are analyzed. We also discuss an interesting approach to construct lepton mass matrices under permutation symmetry, from which one may derive another nearly tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing scenario with no intrinsic CP violation in neutrino oscillations.
We review and clarify some cases of geometrical CP violation, the framework of spontaneous CP violation through complex phases with values that are independent of parameters of the potential. We present a flavour model based on Delta(27) featuring spontaneous CP violation, that can reproduce all quark masses and mixing data. The scalar sector of the model has exotic properties that can be tested at the LHC.
Recent developments for mixing and CP violation in the D0 and Bs systems are reviewed, including (i) the recently emerging evidence for D0-D0bar mixing and the interpretations of the measurements; (ii) the theoretical status of the calculations of Delta(Gamma_D) and Delta(m_D); (iii) some implications of the measurement of Bs mixing for new physics.
Suppose the geometrical explaination to the weak CP phase in quark sector is also valid for neutrinos, the mixing and CP violation in neutrino system are discussed. We find a larger $J_{CP}$ than $3\times 10^{-3}$ implys the large-mixing solution for solar neutrino problem. In case of bi-maximal mixing, we predict relative large CP violation with $J_{CP}$ larger than $10^{-3}$ in neutrino system, except the third mixing angle approachs to 0 or $π/2$ very closely.
We review the current status of B-mixing observables and point out the crucial importance of a control of the hadronic uncertainties for ruling out or confirming hints of BSM physics. In addition we introduce a rating system for theory predictions for lifetimes and mixing observables, that classifies the quality of the corresponding SM values ranging from no star to ****
We analyse the most recent experimental data regarding D^0 - \bar{D^0} mixing, allowing for CP violation. We focus on the dispersive part of the mixing amplitude, M^D_{12}, which is sensitive to new physics contributions. We obtain a constraint on the mixing amplitude: |M^D_{12}| < 6.2\times 10^{-11} MeV at 95% C.L. . This constraint is weaker by a factor of about three than the one which is obtained when no CP violation is assumed.
The 2-neutrino exchange potential (2NEP) is a Standard Model (SM) weak potential due to the exchange of virtual neutrino-antineutrino pairs. Consequently, many aspects of neutrino physics, such as the number of flavors, their masses, fermionic nature (Dirac or Majorana), low-energy neutrino physics and CP-violation, can be examined via the 2NEP. We present a new approach for calculating the 2NEP taking into account the phenomenon of neutrino mixing and CP-violation which arises from the structure of the SM weak interaction Lagrangian. Lastly, we explore implications of our result in various ph…
Flavor mixing and the quark mass spectrum are intimately related. In view of the observed strong hierarchy of the quark and lepton masses and of the flavor mixing angles it is argued that the description of flavor mixing must take this into account. One particular interesting way to describe the flavor mixing emerges, which is particularly suited for models of quark mass matrices based on flavor symmetries. We conclude that the unitarity triangle important for $B$ physics should be close to or identical to a rectangular triangle. $CP$ violation is maximal in this sense.
We study neutrino masses and mixings based on the simplest SO(10) mass relations and the seesaw mechanism. We find that the requirement of large neutrino mixings determines the relative magnitude of the heavy Majorana neutrino masses in terms of the known quark mass hierarchy. This leads to specific predictions for the structure of the neutrino mixing matrix, the light neutrino masses, CP violation in neutrino oscillations, neutrinoless double b-decay and the baryon asymmetry.
We propose a democratic-type neutrino mass matrix based on $Z_3$ symmetry. This mass matrix predicts the CP violation phase, $δ=π/2$, and the mixing angle between the mass eigenstates $ν_2$ and $ν_3$, $\sin^2 θ_{23}= \cos^2 θ_{23}=1/2$ which is essential for the large atmospheric neutrino mixing, between $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$. In this model, the large CP violation effect may be expected.
We discuss $π^0$ -$η$ mixing and its implication for $ε'/ ε$ to next-to-leading order in the low-energy expansion. The big effect due to $η$-$η'$ mixing is shown to be largely cancelled by other contributions occurring at the same order in the chiral expansion.
We discuss unstable particle mixing in CP-violating weak decays. It is shown that for a completely degenerate system unstable particle mixing does not introduce a CP-violating partial rate difference, and that when the mixings are small only the off-diagonal mixings are relevant. Also, in the absence of mixing, unstable particle wave function renormalization does not introduce any additional effect. An illustrative example is given to heavy scalar decays with arbitrary mixing.
The phenomenology of flavor mixing of heavy Majorana neutrinos is studied. The physical degrees of freedom, which propagate like free particles until they decay in the presence of flavor mixing, are identified by diagonalizing the resummed propagator. It is shown that they should be interpreted as quasiparticles which lose Majorana nature.
The CP violation required in leptogenesis may have different origin, but in an effective theory they all are related to the rephasing invariant CP violating measure in the mixing matrix of the leptonic sector. We point out that the maximum amount of CP violation in some models can be estimated with our present knowledge of the neutrino mixing angles, which can help us understand the CP violation in the generation of the lepton asymmetry of the universe. For example, the possibility of leptogenesis may be ruled out in some models from an knowledge of the effective neutrino mass matrix.
The model of the neutrino mass matrix which we proposed in 2000 is revisited in the light of the recent T2K experiments. This model has the special property that it predicts the maximal 2-3 mixing and CP violation under the some simple condition. In this model, if the condition is relaxed, the 2-3 angle and the CP violation deviate from their maximal values and they are related. We present such relations for typical cases.
Influence of the isospin-violating (ρ^0, ω)-mixing is discussed for any pair of decays of ρ^0, ωinto the same final state. It is demonstrated, in analogy to the CP-violation in neutral kaon decays, that isospin violation can manifest itself in various forms: direct violation in amplitudes and/or violation due to mixing. In addition to the known decays (ρ^0, ω)\toπ^+π^- and (ρ^0, ω)\toπ^0γ, the pair of decays to e^+e^- and the whole set of radiative decays with participation of ρ^0, ω(in initial or final states) are shown to be also useful and perspective for studies. Existing data on these dec…
A low energy non-unitary leptonic mixing matrix is a generic feature of many extensions of the Standard Model. In such a case, the task of future precision neutrino oscillation experiments is more ambitious than measuring the three mixing angles and the leptonic (Dirac) CP-phase, i.e., the accessible parameters of a unitary leptonic mixing matrix. A non-unitary mixing matrix has 13 parameters that affect neutrino oscillations, out of which four are CP-violating. In the scheme of Minimal Unitarity Violation (MUV) we analyse the potential of a Neutrino Factory for determining or constraining the…
Following the anomalous like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry measured by the D0 collaboration at the Tevatron collider we discuss the implications of large CP violation in $B_{d,s}$ mixing for Supersymmetric (SUSY) Standard Models, focussing on those models which allow a family symmetry and unification. For the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) we show that it is only possible to account for $B_{s}$ mixing and CP violation at the expense of large squark mixing which would require a new approach to family symmetry models. In order to describe both $B_{s}$ and $B_{d}$ mixing and CP viola…
We review mixing and CP violation in $D$ mesons, emphasizing the differences with the other pseudoscalar mesons in the Standard Model, and show that $D$ mesons can be useful to look for physics beyond the Standard Model.
We report on a study of CP Violation in D0-D0bar mixing and Electric Dipole Moments in the framework of supersymmetric alignment models. Both classes of observables are strongly suppressed in the Standard Model and highly sensitive to new sources of flavor and CP violation that can be present in models of New Physics. Supersymmetric alignment models generically predict large non-standard effects in D0-D0bar mixing and we show that visible CP violation in D0-D0bar mixing implies lower bounds for the EDMs of hadronic systems, like the neutron EDM and the mercury EDM, in the reach of future exper…
If massive neutrinos are Majorana particles, then the lepton number should be violated and neutrino-antineutrino oscillations will take place. In this talk, we present the properties of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations with a non-unitary leptonic flavor mixing matrix, which naturally arises in the type-I seesaw model due to the mixing between light and heavy Majorana neutrinos. Taking into account current experimental bounds on the leptonic unitarity violation, we show that the CP asymmetries induced by the non-unitary mixing parameters can significantly deviate from those in…
We study effects of CP violation in a modified bipair neutrino mixing scheme predicting $\sin^2θ_{23}$ near both 0.4 and 0.6 currently consistent with experimentally allowed values. The source of CP violation is supplied by charged lepton mixing accompanied by a single phase, whose mixing size is assumed to be less than that of the Wolfenstein parameter for the quark mixing. Including results of leptogenesis, which is based on the minimal seesaw model, we obtain the allowed region of CP-violating Dirac and Majorana phases, which provides the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe in the cas…
